1. How did you choose your proposed study and institution? I am keen on studying Maritime Engineering to advance and expand Indonesian archipelago and interested in structure, construction, ship stability, hydrodynamics, fluid-mechanics, and marine transport. Following this, if I earn my master degree in Australia, it will evolve relationship between Indonesia and Australia in the field of maritime. For example, as Australia is an expert builder of cruise ship, therefore it is one of the great opportunities among two countries to increase cooperation in National Tourism. Subsequently, Indonesia has a shipping register namely PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia as same as Australia which also has Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) as a non-profit ship classification. As the benefit, it brings such good news for Indonesia and Australia to have more advantages in research and development in the field of ship classification. To make it happen, I will collaborate with students and instructors, and professors from different backgrounds and international societies. To exemplify, at University of Tasmania is ideal for gaining inspiration and acquiring sound training from international paradigm. Other than that, Indonesia is a maritime country. It has plenty of island which are scattered across the region. By geographical position, Indonesia is an archipelago state with three-quarters of its ocean is greater than its mainland. It can be seen with the coastline on every islands in Indonesia (± 81.000 km) which is the second position after Canada, this potential is the great strenght to improve economy in Indonesia, such as export and import. I chose Master of Maritime Engineering (Technology Management) at University of Tasmania, because it is related to my previous study. Technology Management focuses on the knowledge required to develop a career in technical management across a broad range of maritime sectors. It extends undergraduate engineering knowledge into aspects of ship design, propulsion systems, and associated auxiliary machinery. Management theory in a variety of specialisms is acquired and critically applied through prescribed and electives units. The University of Tasmania is ranked in the top 2% of the universities worldwide and among the top 10 Australian universities for the second year running. Moreover, The University of Tasmania provides Maritime Studies in its Austalian Maritime College (AMC). There are my reasons why I choose Australia and University of Tasmania for my Master Degree. Since I am working as an assistant engineer in a consultant company in naval architecture and marine engineering field, it would be useful for me to build my career. I need to pursue my master degree for gaining international experience while simultaneously strengthening my
professional abilities. I tend to study in Australia more than any other country, since it will be a chance for me to gain more precious and wellrounded education. I believe it, since according to www.topuniversities.com, plenty of Australian Universities were ranked higher than other countries. That is the fact that studying in Australia has to be my choice for my Master Degree. In addition, the main topic of this statement of purpose is about Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. If I am accepted in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering for my Master Degree, I will contact several professors from its department for discussing further about my study, and do a thesis about Ro-Ro Passenger Ship as an Alternative of Land Transportation, which is made of aluminum. The main purpose of my thesis is to reduce traffic congestion in my country, especially Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. It is known that Ro-Ro Passenger Ship will carry a number of cars, motorcycles, and humans from one region to another region. In this case, stability has to be considered due to comfortable condition. Regarding to this, I would like to study about ship stability for aluminum ship, and learn how to design an overwhelming floating building on the sea. Moreover, it is not only about ship stability to design Ro-Ro Passenger ship, but also how to design and calculate its construction with strength, then decide more powerful engine to its movement. To make this plan happen, I have to study first about some concentrations that I have mentioned before in second paragraph. In my first year of study at University of Tasmania, I will start to study Maritime Engineering, and take some classes and lecturers at the University to gain more knowledge before doing my thesis. In my personal opinion, taking several classes in the University is very important to build same perspectives between me and the University. I can introduce myself and meet plenty of friends, I wish this introduction to the others will help me doing my thesis, and we can exchange our knowledge and ideas to each other. In addition, in the first year, I will meet a lot of professors as my lecturer, then have some discussion with them to do my thesis. Following this, in my last year of Master Degree, I will do my thesis with a guidance of professor from Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. If there are any people who want to join with me doing this project, I will welcome them. It is such good news if a range of people doing this thesis. It means that the project will be seriously happened, the purpose of building this ship that reducing traffic congestion will become a reality. Austalia Awards Scholarship has motivated me to gain more experiences with international students and atmosphere. I apply for this program in order to support my study. Afterwards, one of my purposes is same as The Program’s objective that is promoting international exchange in education, such as mutual friendship amongst the participating countries of this program.
