Introduction The document describes the Ericsson IMS System. IMS provides end-users with advanced multimedia services including basic telecom services and conference calling. The SIP protocol together with Diameter and H.248 are used for control signaling. Support is provided for, but not limited to, RTP and MSRP for media transportation. IMS System includes a collection of IMS functions, which are built up by a number of logical nodes. IMS System is a design product, not a solution product, and can not be ordered. IMS System can be seen as a box of building blocks, from which a sub-set can form the platform for an IMS solution.

The IMS System architecture is based on the 3GPP architecture (reference [2]).
2.1
Purpose The purpose of this document is to: •
•
•
2.2
Provide a fundamental understanding of functions enabled by IMS System. Provide an architectural overview and describe the system boundary, internal architecture and interfaces. Be a guide into more detailed documentation.
Scope In most cases when the term Home Subscriber Server (HSS) is used, the product HSS is meant. The HSS product can be used in either the HSS classic mode or the HSS Front End mode as described in chapter 4.2.2.
2.3
General Reading Instruction Within the IMS System, not all IMS System documents are updated to describe the HSS Data Layered Architecture (DLA). One must therefore understand that when reading such document, the used term “HSS” shall be interpreted as the HSS with the classic mode if nothing else is stated. Some IMS System documents might have left out SLF for drawing simplification. When reading such drawing, remember that to achieve scalability a SLF is needed when more than one HSS (classic or Front End) is deployed in the network. From a client perspective, the SLF is running in proxy mode when the HSS Front End is used. Otherwise there is no difference between a HSS in classic mode and a HSS in Front End mode. The same interfaces exist. Example; For MMTel Session Handling, it is described a three party conference creation where the Conference AS verifies that UE-A is authorized to initiate conferences by interrogating the MMTel Users service subscription data in HSS using the Sh interface. This description is correct for the classic HSS. For the Front End HSS, the same Sh request is used by the Conference AS, but it is now sent to an HSS Front End. The HSS Front End will fetch the user data from an external database, the User Data Repository (UDR), before sending the response back to the Conference AS. A reader of the IMS System documentation must be aware of the fact that when HSS is used, an SLF together with an HSS Front End can be used instead (for example in traffic flow).

For better understanding of the document following terms must be considered:
Term
Description
Function
The performance of a specific discreet action disregarding the quantity and quality of the operation.
Logical Functional Entity
It performs a specific set of functions pertaining to a logical node.
Logical Node
A Logical node consists of one or more related logical functional entities. A logical Node can be realized physically on one (or more) Network Elements.
Reference Point
A conceptual point at the conjunction of two nonoverlapping functional groups/logical nodes. It comprises one or more interfaces that describe the interactions and behavior that take place between the entities. A reference point is needed when the conforming entities can evolve independently of each other.
Interface
An Interface describes the interaction point/common Boundary between two/more Logical Nodes/logical functional entities from a particular view (for example, signaling/charging interface). It describes the semantics and behavior of the interaction. An interface has a binding to a protocol and/or Protocol stack.
Protocol
A Set of rules that allow different machines or pieces of software to coordinate with each other without ambiguity. A protocol often implies a common message format and an accepted set of primitives or commands that all parties involve understand and that transactions among them follow predictable logical sequences.
Further definitions and acronyms are found in [1].
