INTRODUCTION is a process of
ELECTROPLATING
depositing a coating of one metal over another by passing current electroplating can be used for decorative purposes.
EXAMPLES

corrosions as well as weather. Zinc articles are electroplated with copper to protect them from corrosion.
ELECROPLATING OF A ZINC BLOCK WITH COPPER PROCEDURE The apparatus used for electroplating is shown in figure. Here, zinc block is to be electroplated; electrode

to
positive terminal of the battery. Copper sulphate solution is taken as electrolyte.
Since copper sulphate consist of copper ions (Cu2+) & sulphate ions (SO42-) , when current is passed following reaction takes place…..
MECHANISM It is based on the relativities of metals. Less reactive metals are electroplated on lower position in the reactivity series. In other words
we can say that metals having higher position ion relatives series are to be electroplated with metal having lower positions.
AT ANODE The copper atoms lose two electrons & get reduced to copper ions (CU 2+), which goes into the copper sulphate solution.

The

which
electroplating is to be done is made cathode

connected
to

terminal of the battery. The metal to be deposited is made anode and connected to positive terminal of the battery.
A water-soluble salt of metal to be deposited is teken as electrolyte.
AT CATHODE Positively charged copper ions (Cu2+) go to the cathode where they accept electrons & get reduced copper (Cu) these atoms get deposited on the zinc block.

RESULT A bright and shining layer of copper is formed on the zinc block & we can say that zinc is copper-plated. The concentration of electrolyte remains same sulphate ions not get discharged because they have high discharge potentials.
