21 Golden Golden Safety Safet y Rules Edvard
A safe work
21 Safety Safety Rules fo r Working Working with Electrical Eq uipme nt
environment is is not alw always ays enough t o co ntro l all all pot ential electrica electricall hazards. You must be be very very cautious and cautious and work safely . Safet y rules rules help you you co ntro l your your and o thers risk o f inj injury ury or death f rom workplace workplace hazards. If you are working on electrical circuit circuit s or with electrical electrical to ols and equipment, equipment, you need to use f ollowing golden safety rules: rules:
Rule no. 1 Avoid conta c ontact ct with energized elect electrical rical circuits . Pl Please ease don’t make f un of this rule if yo u already already know know this (and you probably already know if you are reading these lines) lines) and remem remember ber that if so mething bad occurs – you probably won’t won’t have second chance. chance. That ’s not f unny unny.. Rule no. 2 Treat all electrical electrical devices devices as if the they y are live live or energized. You never know. Rule no. 3
Disconnect the po wer so urce bef ore servicing or repairing electrical equipment. The only way to be sure. Rule no. 4 Use o nly too ls and equipment with no n-co nducting handles when working o n electrical devices. Easy to check. Rule no. 5 Never use metallic pencils or rulers, or wear rings or metal watchbands when working with electrical equipment. T his rule is very easy to f orget , especially when you are s howing so me electrical part po inting with metallic pencil. Always be aware. Rule no. 6 When it is necessary t o handle equipment that is plugged in, be s ure hands are dry and, when pos sible, wear nonconductive gloves, protective clothes and shoes with insulated soles. Remeber: gloves, clothes and shoes. Rule no. 7 If it is saf e to do so , work with o nly one hand, keeping the o ther hand at your side or in your pocket, away fr om all conductive material. This precautio n reduces t he likelihoo d of accidents t hat result in current pas sing thro ugh the chest cavity. If you ever read about current pass ing through human body you will know, so remember – work with one hand only. Safety clothes, gloves and sho es
If you don’t clue about electric current path through hu man body, read more in following technical articles: Do You Understand What Is Electric Shock? What psycholo gical ef f ect does an electric sho ck? Rule no. 8 Minimize the use o f electrical equipment in cold rooms or o ther areas where condensation is likely. If equipment must be used in such areas, mount the equipment on a wall or vertical panel. Rule no. 9 If water or a chemical is s pilled onto equipment, shut of f power at t he main switch o r circuit breaker and unplug the equipment. Very logical. NEVER try to remove water or similar f rom equipment while energized. Af terall, it’s s tupid t o do
so . Rule no. 10 If an individual comes in cont act with a live electrical conducto r, do not to uch the equipment, cord o r perso n. Disconnect the po wer source f rom the circuit breaker or pull out the plug using a leather belt. Tricky situation, and you must be very calm in order not to make the situat ion even wors e. Like in previous rules – Always disconnect the power FIRST. Rule no. 11
Always d is co nne ct the p o wer FIRST
Equipment pro ducing a “t ingle” sho uld be disconnected and report ed promptly f or repair. Rule no. 12 Do not rely on grounding to mask a defective circuit no r attempt t o co rrect a f ault by insertion o f another f use or breaker, particularly one of larger capacity. Rule no. 13 Drain capacitors bef ore working near them and keep the short circuit o n the t erminals during the work to prevent electrical shock. Rule no. 14 Never to uch anot her person’s equipment o r electrical cont rol devices unless instructed t o do so . Don’t be too smart. Don’t try your luck. Rule no. 15 Enclose all electric cont acts and conducto rs s o that no o ne can accidentally come into cont act with them. If applicable do it always, if not be very carefull. Rule no. 16
Never handle electrical equipment when hands, f eet, o r bo dy are wet o r perspiring, o r when st anding o n a wet floor. Remeber: Gloves and sh oes Rule no. 17 When it is necessary t o to uch electrical equipment (for example, when checking for overheated motors), use the back of the hand. Thus , if accidental sho ck were to cause muscular cont raction, you would not “freeze” to the conductor. Rule no. 18 Do not sto re highly flammable liquids near elect rical equipment. Rule no. 19 Be aware that interlocks on equipment disconnect t he high voltage so urce when a cabinet doo r is o pen but power f or co ntro l circuits may remain on. Read the single line diagram and wiring schemes – know you r switchboard. Rule no. 20 De-energize o pen experimental circuits and equipment t o be lef t unatt ended. Rule no. 21 Do no t wear loo se clot hing or t ies near electrical equipment. Act like an electrical engineer, you are not on the beach.
Example of human st upidity and ignorance of basic safe t y Electrical saf ety, come on… I guess we’ll never know did the co rd extension dro p into water… Hope no t.
