ABSTRACT This project was designed to research into the effects of home background on the academic performance of children children in selected schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. In doing this, three research questions were stated and some basic assumptions made. A sample of one hundred students was drawn out of three selected schools; the research instrument used was the questionnaires while the data analysis involved the use of the research questions. On the basis of the findings that emerged from the study some of the following recommendations recommendations were made: i.

The society should promote the monogamous family image,. This will help to regulate the number of children produced in the family.

Parents should encourage and motivate their children to study

The school can help the child especially the extremely dull ones by investigating into their homes background, and assessing likely factors responsible for the child’s dullness and seeking out avenues of helping the child overcome his problem.

The government should endeavour to provide free nursery education with qualified teachers that will educate the children from their tender ages.

The government should help the children from poor home by providing an equipping libraries and parks for them in strategic locations

separated from the home background in which the child grows up. A healthy home background offers emotional security to a child.

The child’s environment outside the school (his home background) determines his academic performance of the children. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study is basically to find out how the home background of a child affects his academic performance everyone is born with some potentials, or abilities which could be utilized to the optimum for the development of his personal although students may be exposed to the same teacher and the same condition in the school yet, they may not attain to wonder why there are remarkable differences in their performance

hence this study is intended to find out to which extent the variable in the home background contribute to his academic performance. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The study is designed to examine the following; following; 1. The

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY This study is designed specifically to find out and understand how the child’s home background determine his academic performance, the child’s environment have have helped to bring about a lowered or increased outcomes in the child’s academic performance.

SIGNIFICANCE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study is basically designed to investigate the effect of parental socio-economic background academic qualification size of family the home environment. The study will therefore highlight

significant

difference

in

various

home

backgrounds. The study will enable educational and curriculum planners to take full cognizance of individual difference among children in any teaching learning environment while planning of it will enable the teacher to adapt new dimension approaches while teaching finally parents perspective or their educational qualification should encourage the children at home and also provide the maximum stimulation at all time.

Does the size of the family and the child position posi tion affect his academic performance?

Does the academic qualification of the child’s parents affect his academic performance in school

Does the socio-economic class class of a child’s parents affect his academic performance?

LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is designed to cover the area of Benin City in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State using some selected secondary schools as the sampled population, it is restricted to just one of the numerous factors that determine the academic performance of students in Nigeria school; this
