2 Overview

2

Overview

2.1 Background After decades of development, GSM networks have grown to accommodate a large number of features and parameters. These parameters must be adjusted properly on different networks in accordance with different network plans and traffic volumes. Due to the network complexity, the parameters sometimes are set to inappropriate values. The inappropriate parameters may cause performance problems. DSON optimizes configurations in the following scenarios: When certain unplanned events, such as parades or other mass gatherings occur, traffic increases sharply. In such traffic burst scenarios, users cannot optimize their network configuration in advance to avoid network congestion. Network congestion may occur at any time. In this case, DSON can automatically identify congestion scenarios and implement corresponding operations to eliminate the congestion. Inappropriate parameter settings deteriorate network performance if congestion occurs in any of the following scenarios: concentric cells, half-rate voice services, paging, and satellite transmission over the Abis interface. DSON can automatically identify these scenarios, and check and adjust parameters accordingly.

2.2 Introduction DSON covers the following features: l

GBFD-171213 Automatic Paging Overload Control This feature enables BSCs to monitor the paging status on the network in real time. When network paging exceeds certain thresholds, the BSCs automatically activate related functions, algorithms or adjust related parameters to relieve the paging overload and improve network performance.

GBFD-171215 Automatic TCH Congestion Control This feature enables BSCs to monitor the loads on traffic channels (TCHs) on the network in real time. When the TCH loads exceed certain thresholds, the BSCs automatically activate related functions, algorithms or adjust related parameters to relieve TCH congestion and improve network performance.

2 Overview

GBFD-180205 Adaptive Scenario-based Parameter Adjustment This feature enables BSCs to periodically inspect network scenario characteristics and perform parameter checks. When identifying inappropriate parameter settings in the concentric cell, half-rate speech version, paging, or satellite transmission over Abis scenario, the BSCs adaptively adjust the parameter settings to the network scenarios. In this way, this feature prevents inappropriate parameter settings from affecting network performance.

2.3 Benefits DSON automatically identifies paging overload and TCH congestion and implements corresponding operations to resolve theses problems. Alternatively, DSON adjusts parameters in certain scenarios to achieve optimal network performance. In this way, network operation and maintenance work is simplified for customers, reducing the OPEX and improving system stability.

3.2 GBFD-171215 Automatic TCH Congestion Control 3.2.1 Introduction This feature enables BSCs to monitor the loads on TCHs on the network in real time. When the loads on the TCHs exceed certain thresholds, the BSCs automatically activate related functions, or adjust related parameters to relieve TCH congestion, thereby improving network performance. These functions include TCHF-TCHH handover, inter-cell handover, and directed retry. These parameters include TCH Traffic Busy Threshold and AMR TCH/H Prior Cell Load Threshold.

3.2.2 Principles This feature takes effect when TCHCongCtrlStThld( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) is set to a value other than 255. In such a case, the BSC adjusts r elated par ameters based on contr ol levels.

3.3 GBFD-180205 Adaptive Scenario-based Parameter Adjustment 3.3.1 Introduction This feature enables BSCs to periodically inspect network scenario characteristics and perform parameter checks. When identifying inappropriate parameter settings in the concentric cell, half-rate speech version, paging, or satellite transmission over Abis scenario, the BSCs adaptively adjust the parameter settings to the network scenarios. In this way, this feature prevents inappropriate parameter settings from affecting network performance.

3.3.2 Principles This feature takes effect when one or multiple options of the AutoParaAdjustSw( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter are selected. The AutoParaAdjustSw( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ) parameter provides the following options: IUOADJUST(Concentric Cell Adjustment), HRADJUST(Half-Rate Adjustment) , PGADJUST(Paging Adjustment), and ABISSATELLITEADJUST(Abis Satellite Transmission Adjustment). The BSC identifies scenarios and adjusts parameters when the feature is enabled and in every early morning.

Concentric Cell Adjustment The Concentric Cell Adjustment function takes effect when IUOADJUST(Concentric Cell Adjustment) is selected for AutoParaAdjustSw( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ). In such a case, the BSC checks whether a cell is a concentric cell and whether Issue 01 (2016-09-05)

Half-Rate Adjustment The Half-Rate Adjustment function takes effect when HRADJUST(Half-Rate Adjustment) BSC6900 , BSC6910 ). In such a case, the BSC checks is selected for AutoParaAdjustSw( whether a half-rate speech version is configured. If it is, the BSC will check the setting of TCHAJFLAG( BSC6900 , BSC6910 ). 3.4 Supplementary DSON Information Parameter Settings Parameter settings related to DSON comply with the following rules: l

When DSON is disabled, manually configured parameter settings take effect.

When configuring the Automatic Paging Overload Control feature on the CME, perform a single configuration first, and then perform a batch modification if required. Configure the parameters of a single object before a batch modification. Perform a batch modification before logging out of the parameter setting interface.

Number of multiframes in a cycle on a paging subchannel. In fact, this parameter specifies the number of paging sub-channels that a paging channel in a cell is divided into. In an actual network, an MS does not listen to other paging sub-channels but its belonging paging subchannel only. For details, see 3GPP TS 05.02 and 05.08. The larger the value of this parameter, the more the number of the paging sub-channels in a cell, and the fewer the number of the users belonging to each paging sub-channel. In this case, the mean uptime of the MS battery can be prolonged. For details, see the computing mode of paging group in 3GPP TS 05.02. Number of multiframes in a cycle on a paging subchannel. In fact, this parameter specifies the number of paging sub-channels that a paging channel in a cell is divided into. In an actual network, an MS does not listen to other paging sub-channels but its belonging paging subchannel only. For details, see 3GPP TS 05.02 and 05.08. The larger the value of this parameter, the more the number of the paging sub-channels in a cell, and the fewer the number of the users belonging to each paging sub-channel. In this case, the mean uptime of the MS battery can be prolonged. For details, see the computing mode of paging group in 3GPP TS 05.02. The larger the value of this parameter, however, the larger the time delay of a paging message in a space segment. Therefore, the average service performance of the system lowers. Based on the principle of ensuring that overload does not occur on paging channels, set this parameter to a value as small as possible. You must regularly measure the overload conditions of the paging channels in a running network and accordingly adjust the value of this parameter properly. A paging message in a location area must be sent in all the cells within this location area at the same time. Therefore, the capacity of a paging channel of each cell in a location area must be the same or nearly the same. The capacity refers to the calculated number of paging sub-channels of each cell.
