York House Basketball Playbook “Palm” 1 - 4 High Sets Rationale As a change up from our continuity offense, we have a number of set plays that we run out of a 1-4 alignment. Most of the plays are called (or signaled) by what the point guard does with the ball (be it pass or dribble). We do this, not only to keep the defense off balance, but also to allow our team to know what weʼre running regardless of playing environment (loud gym, etc). Our point guard signals the alignment by raising an open hand (and thus, exposing his palm) to his teammates. Once this is done, we stress that the other players mimic the signal in order to ensure that the alignment is understood. Because we run a number of different plays from this set, weʼre not concerned if the opponent knows what weʼre setting up. Wing The point guard initiates the offense by passing to either wing player (in this case 3). On the pass: • 1 rubs her check off the high post screen set by 4, then posts up. • 4 screens then pops up to the top. • 2 settles in the weak side post area. • 3 can either pass to the cutting 2 or 4 popping up to the top.

Wing pt. 2 On the pass to 4: • 3 sets a down screen for 1. • 4 passes to either 1 cutting off the screen or 3 posting up. If 4 passes to 1, she follows her pass to run screen and roll.
Wing pt. 3 On the screen/roll: • 2 and 5 set a staggered screen for 3. • 4 rolls to the weak side of the basket. • 1 can either reject the screen and go baseline, or accept the screen and find options.
Guard If 1 initiates the offense to a forward in the guard spot (may happen as a release because the wing is covered). • 1 cuts off the high post screen set by 4, to the opposite low post. • 4 screens then pops up. • 5 can either pass to the cutting 1 or the 4 popping up.

Guard pt. 2 On the pass from 5 to 4 we run our flex action: • 1 sets a baseline screen for 2. • 5 sets a down screen for 1. • 4 should look to pass to: • 2 cutting off the baseline screen. • 1 popping up to the junction area • 5 opening after setting the downscreen. * As soon as 4 catches the ball, she should quickly fake at 3 on the wing, to keep the defense honest. Guard pt. 3 - Flex Continuity If we don’t get a shot: • 4 passes to 1 • 5 pops out to the wing. • 3 cuts off the baseline screen set by 2. • 4 sets a down screen for 2. * Same options as above.
Handoff As a counter to “wing” option, the point guard will initiate the offense to the wing, then follow her pass to receive a handoff. On the handoff: • 4 dives to the corner. • 5 flashes to the strong side high post area. • 2 sprints to the top (as a decoy/outlet)

Handoff - Alley-oop While 2 is sprinting to the top: • 3 curls off the high post screen, looking for the alley-oop pass from 1.
Handoff - Screen and Roll Once 3 has cleared to the opposite low post, we run our sideline screen and roll. • 5 sets the screen for 1, who attacks middle. On 5s movement 2 sets a down screen for 3. After, both, 5 and 1 clear the wing area, 4 fills in behind their actions.
Handoff - Vs. aggressive hedge on the Screen. If 1 recognizes that 5s defender is aggressively hedging the screen, she will pass to the corner. This pass signals 5 to immediately dive to the hoop.

Dribble @ If 1 initiates the offense by dribbling at the wing: • 3 cuts backdoor, then posts up. • 4 flashes high. Once 1 gets to the wing: • 3 diagonal screens for 5. • 1 looks to pass the ball to 5 in the post.
Dribble @ pt. 2 After 5 posts up: • 4 down screens for 3, then opens up for slip opportunities. • 3 pops up of the down screen looking to shoot or rip opposite.
Dribble @ pt. 3 If 3 doesn”t shoot: • 4 can ball screen, and roll to the front of the hoop. • 5 fills the opposite guard spot. If we pass back to 5, then we are right into our flex action.

Utah This is a verbal call. • 1 will call the play, then dribble away from the post that she wants to set the screen. • 4 sprints to set a screen on 1s check, then roll to the front of the hoop. • 5 pops up after 1 and 4 clear.
Utah --> Flex If 1 can’t get to the basket and doesn’t pass to 4, then 5 pops up and we move into our flex movement.
High Stack Similar to Utah, but we may put a number of different players in the 2, 3, and 4 positions. • 1 initiates one side, then dribbles hard off the screen set by 5 (trying to turn the corner). • 5 sets the high screen for 1. • 2,3 set up in the corners waiting for 3pt opportunities.

High Stack pt. 2 If 1 can’t turn the corner and doesn’t kick the ball to 3. • 4 back screens 5s check then pops up to the top. • 5 cuts to the basket looking for the easy post up opportunity. 1 can either pass to 5 posting up or 4 popping up.
High Stack pt. 3 If 4 doesn’t have a quick post entry: • 4 quickly reverses the ball to 2. • 5 posts up on that strong side. • 4 and 1 set staggered screens for 3. • 1 spaces to the corner • 4 pops back up to the top. • 3 cuts up to the strong side guard spot looking for a 3pt shot.
High Stack pt. 4 If 3 doesn’t shoot, then she reverses the ball to 4 and we transition into our flex cuts.
