1. PURPOSE This document contains generic information about products. 5. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In FWHA (472897A.101) and FWGB (472851A.103) units with particular versions of software, a software subroutine may attempt to update firmware that is pre-installed on a hardware component within the unit. This update attempt occurs the first time the unit is powered on after leaving the factory. The update step happens automatically and may require up to 20 minutes, but if it is interrupted, the hardware component will be corrupted and is not recoverable from software. In this situation the unit will require return to Nokia for repair. This note is to advise users to wait 30 minutes after first powering the unit before attempting another power cycle or a software update.

6. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Observations: The unit failed a SW update in customer’s staging process due to the update process being aborted prematurely during a critical phase, leaving a firmware device (part code P171838, schematic references D52000 and D62000, a.k.a. “Scintera”) in a corrupted state. Before finalizing an update, system software checks all firmware devices. Unable to communicate with the Scintera, it automatically attempts to back out of the update, but as the corrupt firmware remains, the unit cannot come into service even with the original installed system software. It then enters a reboot cycle. Root cause: Termination of update process before completion. Units manufactured after 8 Jul 2014 may contain a Scintera device with firmware version v4.0.05.12, while RF SW is expecting v4.0.05.10. Upon identifying the discrepancy, RF SW attempts to reload the Scintera firmware with v4.0.05.10. The update process is included in all system software versions beginning with LNF5.0_ENB_1304_09x_xx as were installed on the FZM units until 5 Aug 2014. Corrective action: The Scintera firmware update process is no longer required, so it has been removed from system software, effective with versions LNF5.0_ENB_1304_098_00 and newer. Beginning on 5-Aug-2014, the system software loaded at the factory SW staging was updated from LNF5.0_ENB_1304_090_00 to LNF5.0_ENB_1304_131_80, and no longer attempts to update the Scintera firmware.

7. SOLUTION / INSTRUCTIONS Users should wait 30 minutes upon first powering an FWGB or FWHA unit before attempting another power cycle or attempting a software update. This applies only for: • 472851A FWGB units in a serial number range from RY141611049 to RY143131103 • 472897A FWHA units in a serial number range from RY142420537 to RY142723337. Units outside this serial number range do not have the combination of hardware and software that allow the problem to occur.
