The Ethical Dellimas in the Film My Sister Keeper

NAME: Maliha Sabah REG NO:L1F10MBAM2132 COURSE NAME:BUSINESS ETHICS SECTION A ASSIGNMENT 3 DATE 20 May 2012 THE ETHICAL DELLIMAS IN THE FILM MY SISTER KEEPER: This film tells us the story of parents who conceived there daughter Anna through genetic engineering in order to save her elder daughter Kate who was the patient of leukemia so that Anna could donate her sister blood and other body organs like kidney and marrow all over her life span. Anna engaged a lawyer and filed a law suit against her parents ?Now the question arises who is ethically correct ?anna or her parents ?Let me explain it in the light of some ethical theories. In her parents point of view according to THE ETHICS OF CARE a person should take care of the person close to him or dependent upon him,so as kate was dependant on Anna for her living so Anna should help her out in every possible way.Now if we look at Anna’s point of you in RIGHT’s PROSPECTIVE it is the positive right of anna to protect and save her body organs and no one in the world can compel her to to donate hem to anyone forcefully. Now if we talk about the principal of equal liberty no one in the world is allowed to invade in any persons liberty, and if Anna’s parents are asking her to donate her kidney forcefully to her sister then they are invading in her liberty to live the way she wants to. Last but not the least I will like to talk about the JUSTICE AND FAIRNESS concept which talks about the COMPENSATORY JUSTICE, according to which a person should be restored or compensated with what ever the person has lost, but in this case her parents can never compensate her blood, marrow or kidney.

From all the above debate I have concluded that it was unethical at the end of Anna’s parents firstly to conceive a daughter just for the sake of saving her elder daughter and then forcing her to donate her marrow, blood and kidney to her. I support Anna.
