Each o these actors has been in its own way orce throughout the world. -ut more interesting is the realization that go!ernments today no longer possess the reser!es to materially afect the global capital mar%ets. Capital now mo!es according to the dictates o mar%ets) not o go!ernments. 9ith its great condence on 'oining the 9T4) the Philippines are still lagging behind its *outheast &sian neighbors in terms o economic perormance. 9hereas) the Philippine economic growth was second only to /apan $s in the +D,:$s. -ut when the nation 'oined the 9T4 in +DD) the Philippines had entered the global economic game with its domestic political economy unprepared and unde!eloped. &s a result) the Philippine state has ailed to create the %ind o organized socioeconomic en!ironment that would ha!e prepared the country or global competition. There are many things that globalization that brought 8uic% changes into the Philippine society. 9ith its !ast de!elopment it has brought about technologies mostly computers and sotware and also telecom companies are being introduced into the mar%et. Than%s to globalization) such technologies were in@uenced by Philippines neighboring &sian countries li%e Malaysia and China ) and e!en /apan . Than%s to globalization) it has opened its economy to oreign trade and in!estment. 3urthermore) globalization has allowed 3ilipino wor%ers to tra!el the world) but most head or the Middle East) East &sia) the 7* and Canada and Europe due to better economies and better money. 3ilipinos wor%ing o!erseas numbered more than three million < about +: percent o the labor orce. The total number o o!erseas 3ilipinos may be as high as eight million) according to the go!ernment.
Those 3ilipinos wor%ing o!erseas send about I+:.J billion bac% to their amilies or relati!es in the Philippines in K::. n contrast) the 8uestion that the 3ilipino society as%s themsel!es is> 5Can the Philippines handle globalization62 Many 3ilipinos belie!e that globalization has done nothing or their country. &nd this is due to the po!erty that has been becoming worse each year. The Philippines is still corrupt and still aces economic and political problems) thereore) the nation and its people does not trust the process o globalization. The ma'ority o 3ilipinos belie!e that globalization has brought about problems and con@ict rather than changes. The people o the Philippines mostly rely on its leaders because it$s the leaders whom the society belie!es and trust or the people %now that the leaders are the ones that can ma%e the whole Philippine society better and much more de!eloped or well
