SMPS (SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY)
POWER SUPPLY: Power supply is a necessary for smooth functioning of the computer A computer power supply unit converts high power AC into multiple DC voltages. Low voltage DC power is usually integrated with computers.In such cases we use different powersupply systems to convert hih voltage AC power to wellregulated lower voltage DC power as required by the components of computer.
Elements of power supply There are three main elements in basic power supply , namely transformer rectifier and filter Depending on the requirements of the user these elements can be very simple or extremely complex for a given power supply
Types Of Power Supply : Linear power supply: A linear power supply powered by AC , uses a transformer to convert the voltage from the mains to a different usually a lower voltage.
Smps(switch mode power supply): In smps to obtain dc voltage . The AC mains input is directly rectified with out the use of transformer .
Rectifier: • Rectifier is an electronic circuit used for converting an alternating current to direct current . • The process of converting AC to DC by allowing one-way electron flow is called as rectification. • The device used for rectification is called as Rectifier • Rectifiers are used as components of power supplies.
Filter: Thee filter also used in smps The purpose of the is to convert the pulsating DC provided by the rectifier into the steady DC voltage required for electronic circuits.

POWER CONNECTORS: Power connector is an electrical connector that is is used to carry DC or low frequency AC power with the help of power connectors , the power supply unit provides current to the different components of a system which includes mother board , hard disk drive and other components
Transformer: • Tansformer is used in every electronic equipment • It is used to convert AC voltage to lower voltage • It’s main use is in the power applications where it transforms the voltage from one value to another. • Transformers are also widely used in other circuits for audio to radio frequencies
Types Of Power Connectors: AT Power connectors : AT (Advanced Technology) power connectors have two 6- wire connectors named P8 and P9 which are to be connected to the mother board .
ATX Power Connectors : ATX (Advanced Technology Extended ) power connector is a 20 pin connector which out puts 6 types of voltages .
Standard Peripheral Power Connector: It is also known as “ 4- pin Molex power cable “ or 4-pin Molex . These connectors are used for connect the hard disk drive. These wire connectors are available in large as well as small size connectors
