Nidhish Shanmugasundaram Tears erupted from my eyes and ran down my cheeks leaving stains that made my face look disgusting. The emotion of sadness, which is something I hadn’t felt in a long time, came rushing to the surface like a volcano had erupted and the lava was misery itself. I thought how dare they? I have done more work this year than they have in their entire life times. Now they are saying that they deserve something that I don’t. Should I even be doing all this work and robotics itself? Earlier, I was walking by where my team was sitting and they were whispering in huddle. It was the Where is Wolcott Robotics Competition. What could they be whispering about here among the 20 other teams that are sitting around them. I go near them and I hear them talking about next year’s leadership positions. “Who do you guys think is going to lead the c ommittees in robotics?” questioned a Veteran member to the Treasurer of the team.
The Treasurer utters, “I don’t really know because I ha ven’t really thought about it.” I join the conversation by saying, “I will obviously be the systems committee head right? I mean I have been the one of the most active and hardworking members of the team. Suddenly, they all chuckled like hyenas and looked at me as if I was a dwarf who was less than them. The Veteran member said with a demeaning tone, “Nidhish, no offense but there is no way you will become committee head for robotics, which includes this year or the next.” Everyone nodded and agreed. I felt like my tiny heart was ripped out at that moment and squeezed till it was dust as gray as clo uds that hung over my head . Earlier, I knew that this was a competition that meant almost nothing to anyone else except me because today was the day that I would get to drive the robot and prove myself to the others. It was a brisk day and we were hauling the robot in and I was a bit nervous and the only person who guided me in the morning was my friend, Alejandro Nieves. He told me that I will be fine and our team will win the competition. I now, sat outside in the cold on the curb and pondered what I should do. I had missed the mandatory drive team meeting. In that instant, a snowflake gently glided through the air and fell on my nose, then melted. Suddenly, I felt a hand on my shoulder and I thought this better not be those evil, unkind pe ople. Thankfully, it was Alejandro. He saw the tear stains on my face and comforted me. He was the only one who could see me for all the work that I had done and the only one who knew my passion for robotics itself.
Commented [1]: say that they were a blue splotch on the bleachers.
