The Marquis Himself Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade (2 June 1740 – 2 December 1814) was a French aristocrat, revolutionary, politician and writer famous for his libertine sexuality and lifestyle. His works include novels, short stories, plays, dialogues, and political tracts. He is best known for his erotic works, which combined philosophical discourse with sexual fantasies. He was a proponent of extreme freedom, unrestrained by morality, religion or law. Sade was incarcerated in various prisons and in an insane asylum for about 32 years of his life.

Masters & Slaves In BDSM, Master/slave is a relationship in which one individual (the submissive) gives to another (the dominant) ultimate authority over them. It is a form of dominance and submission or total power exchange. The participants may be of any gender or sexual orientation. The owner/slave relationship is entered into on a consensual basis. A slave is someone who is voluntarily owned: who elects to give up much or all emotional, psychological, and physical control in a relationship (if not in his/her life) to another person who voluntarily takes on the responsibility the first person relinquishes. The slave's behavior is relatively independent of the top's emotional responses, however – that is, the slave will continue to perform his/her duties regardless of the Master's or Mistress's kindness, harshness, or even absence – because ownership invokes and is invoked by his/her extremely deep commitment to the relationship and to his/her part in it. What the Master or Mistress gets from this relationship may come down to something as simple as having his or her desires, as well as his or her needs, met on an ongoing basis, by someone whose devotion and loyalty need not be questioned. What the slave gets may be as simple as the comfort, satisfaction, and security of being owned or possessed – and, of course, the pleasure of pleasing his/her Master or Mistress – whether or not the slave's position is pleasant or comfortable.
The limits of the slave contract can vary widely and extend into other areas of BDSM. Some people opt to be purely "sex slaves", while others who prefer domestic service identify as "service slaves". Some slaves allow their masters or mistresses complete latitude as to the demands that can be placed on them. Such a relationship is known as total power exchange or TPE. People usually only enter into a master/slave contract after they have known and played with each other for some time, often several years. It can be one of the most difficult relationships in the BDSM world to maintain, and requires special skills and experience.

Japanese Bondage
Kinbaku (緊縛?) means 'tight binding Kinbaku-bi (緊縛美?) which literally means 'the beauty of tight binding'. Kinbaku (also Sokubaku, bakujojutsu, and senyojo jutsu) is a Japanese style of sexual bondage or BDSM which involves tying up the bottom using simple yet visually intricate patterns, usually with several pieces of thin rope–often jute and generally around 6 mm in diameter, but sometimes as small as 4mm, and between 7m-8m long). In Japanese, this rope is known as 'asanawa'.
The word shibari came into common use in the West at some point in the 1990s to describe the bondage art Kinbaku. Shibari (縛り?) is a Japanese word that literally means "to tie" or "to bind". It is used in Japan to describe the artful use of twine to tie objects or packages. Japanese bondage (kinbaku/shibari) is said to differ from Western bondage in that the bottom is almost always immobilized or restrained to gain pleasure from being under the pressure and strain of the ropes, often squeezing the breasts or genitals, while the Western practice of bondage often focuses more on the immobilization, or may be applied strictly for decorative purposes. The aesthetics of the bound person's position are also important: Japanese bondage is distinguished by specific katas (forms) and aesthetic rules. Sometimes, asymmetric and often intentionally uncomfortable positions, often giving choice of two 'evils' (two in different ways uncomfortable positions to chose between by moving in the ropes), are employed to heighten the psychological impact of the bondage. Rules of Public Master-Slave Etiquette by Gloria Brame
Call a dominant by the title of her or his choice (e.g., Mistress, Ma'am, Master, Sir, etc.) If you don't know what his or her preference is, ASK. • Don't lunge at a dominant, stand too close to him or her, or thrust your hand out in greeting. Wait politely until the dominant greets you or initiates a handshake. • You don't need to act like a mouse but it is respectful to periodically lower your eyes in deference to the dominant. • The only person who has the right to give you orders is someone to whom you have consensually surrendered control. If such a person gives an order, an appropriate response would be, "Yes, Sir" or "Yes, Ma'am." • When an order is given, do your best to comply immediately. •
If the order pushes a limit, either use your safe word (if you have one), or tell the dominant that you are having a problem and need to talk to him or her. • If a dominant wanna-be tries to order you around, an appropriate response would be, "I have not consented to this." • Anyone who tries to pressures you into service or tells you it is expected of all submissives should be avoided. • Basic rule of thumb: if someone is rude to you, you are under no obligation to be polite to them, even if he or she is a dominant. Clearly he or she is not a good one. • Open doors for the dominant and wait until she (or he) passes through before following. • Have a lighter or matches handy so you can light a dominant's cigarette or cigar. • If the dominant does smoke, discreetly empty the ashtray every so often. • Offer to fetch a drink for the dominant. • Keep an eye on the dominant's beverage glass and offer to get a refill whenever it is empty. • Offer to carry the dominant's coat, equipment bag, or other cumbersome object. • When standing beside your dominant, make sure to stand just behind his or her elbow, so that the dominant is slightly in front of you.
