2|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
Introduction LEGENDS OF ARCANIS is a shared-experience campaign set in Arcanis, the World of Shattered Empires. The campaign world was developed and is supported by Paradigm Concepts, Inc. through a variety of products. The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign maintains a discussion forum on the Paradigm Concepts, Inc. website, as well as a campaign website off of their main website. This document contains clarifications to the ARCANIS: ROLEPLAYING GAME rules as presented in a number of documents as well as campaign-specific rulings that affect the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. The rules and clarifications contained herein are considered effective for the entire campaign as of the date listed on the title page of this document. Please be aware that these guidelines will change over time as both the ongoing story and the campaign setting evolve. Our commitment to you, the player, is that our primary goal with any changes will be to add options to Heroes (as more material becomes published), and not to take away options. With that being said, there may be times when we have to restrict choices that were previously available to preserve game balance or maintain story coherence. Please know that we will only do so after careful consideration.
Campaign Administration All of the members of the campaign staff are volunteers; there are NO paid positions on the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign staff (though, of course, Paradigm Concepts, Inc. hopes to make a profit on its print products related to the campaign setting). We are always looking for more
dedicated volunteers. The primary qualities we are looking for are boundless enthusiasm, an ability to meet deadlines, and a thorough knowledge of the world of Arcanis. If you think that you might be interested in volunteering your time to the campaign, please send an email to
[email protected] and let us know how you‟d like to help out. Please provide a brief summary of what you feel are your qualifications and areas of expertise
How to Contact the Campaign Staff The best way to get in contact with the campaign staff is via email to
[email protected], or through the Paradigm Concepts, Inc. forums on their website at www.paradigmconcepts.com.
Adventure Designations The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign issues adventures in two major categories and four primary classifications. The two categories are used solely to denote adventures that form the core story of a given story-arc (known as Hard Points, or HP‟s) and those which occur during or around the core story but are not necessarily part of the core story (known as Soft Points, or SP‟s). There are also four additional classifications which provide some information as to the type of module, level of play, and the nature of the challenges therein. These classifications are provided to help layers decide which adventures are best suited to their play style, as well as which adventures they are allowed to play with a given Hero. These four classifications are: Introductory Scenarios : These adventures are specifically written to introduce the world of Arcanis to
3|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
new players and to ease players into the rules system of the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game. These adventures are written for Tier 1.1 to Tier 1.5 Heroes, though any Hero under Tier 2.1 may be allowed to play one of these adventures. Many of these adventures contain pregenerated Heroes for players to use if they wish. If the player chooses to use one of these pre-generated Heroes, the player is free to tweak or retool that pre-generated Hero prior to the Hero so long as the final Hero is legal within the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game system and the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. Standard Scenarios : The standard adventure of the campaign, these adventures can be played by any Hero of an appropriate level. They are designed to have intriguing stories and typically involve one to four combat encounters to help forward the plot. Story Scenarios : These adventures focus primarily on plot exposition and political intrigue than combat. These scenarios will be used to forward campaign plotlines and may have little or no combat scenes at all. This information may help a player decide to use a Hero that is more optimized for roleplaying scenarios and social interaction over those with a heavier combat focus. Grind Scenarios : Also known as „dungeon delves‟, these adventures usually have a number of challenging combat and/or trap based encounters with little to no roleplay scenes at all. This
information may help a player decide to use a Hero that is more optimized for combat scenarios and trapdetection situations over those with a heavier roleplay focus.
Heroes and Source Material This section contains rules that are applicable to all Heroes in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. All players and judges should pay careful attention to the rules in this section, as it relates to what documents (or portions of documents) are considered legal for characters within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. It is important that the campaign be administered properly and consistently for each player and judge to have an equal and fair experience. Allowed Materials and Documents
LEGENDS OF ARCANIS uses the ruleset as presented in the Arcanis Roleplaying Game book (PCI1600). All products within the Arcanis Roleplaying Game line are valid for use in the campaign from the date they are published. This also includes individual rewards and materials released to individual players by Paradigm Concepts, Inc., such as the rewards from the Arcanis: The Cradle of Empires – The First City Sourcebook Kickstarter campaign. All LEGENDS OF ARCANIS Heroes must comply with the most current versions of each of the following documents: LEGENDS OF ARCANIS Campaign Guide (this document) Paradigm Concepts, Inc. Product Errata and Updates. Please note that this document of product errata undergoes periodic review and updates, so please ensure you are
4|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
using the most up-to-date version in your local games. All of the above documents are always released with a version number, which represents the effective date for that version of the document. The most current version of each document always supersedes the previous versions. The most current version of all of the above documents may be downloaded from the official LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign website (legends.paradigmconcepts.com) as well as other sources. The only time in which materials in a new Arcanis Roleplaying Game book product may not be used as options for Heroes is when a book (or specific chapter within the book) is identified as a Game-Master resource, or is listed in this document or the official errata. Character Creation
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign uses the Hero creation rules detailed in the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game line of books, with the following addenda. The following rules apply to all players unless they have overriding documents from Paradigm Concepts, Inc., such as the rewards granted in the Arcanis: The Cradle of Empires – The First City Sourcebook Kickstarter campaign. Hero attributes are purchased using the Heroic campaign levels, as detailed Table 2-4 of the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game book. Starting nations and regions may be chosen from those listed on Table 26 of Arcanis: Roleplaying Game, as well as Cradle of Empires: The Blessed Sourcebook with a number of exceptions, listed below: o
Abessios
o o
o
o
Canceri Dwarven Enclaves (Tultipet) The exception to this rule is if you purchased the right to play one of these characters from the Arcanis: The Cradle of Empires – The First City Sourcebook Kickstarter campaign. Unsealed Lands (All). The exception to this rule is if you purchased the right to play a val‟Vasik from the Arcanis: The Cradle of Empires – The First City Sourcebook Kickstarter campaign. Ymandragore
All races are available for play in all Arcanis: Roleplaying Game books with the following exception. o
Ashen Hide ss‟ressen.
All backgrounds are available for play in all Arcanis: Roleplaying Game books except for those which have racial or national requirements which are not available. For example, Harvester (ba) cannot be taken as it requires Nationality: Ymandragore. Additionally, Exile/Expatriate (ba) cannot have any of the above-listed unplayable nations and regions chosen without express permission from Paradigm Concepts, Inc. When determining your Starting Silver from a background, an average die roll system is used instead of a die roll. In this case, you would take one half of each die plus one. For example, a Patrician a d8 Charisma would have 8d10(d8)+100
5|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
silver coins, which would average out to 8*(5+1)+(4+1)+100 silver coins, or 153 silver coins. Due to biological realities and social taboos within the world of Arcanis, some spell casting is restricted due to cultural objections. As such, the following groups are not legal in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. o
o
o
Male ss‟ressen, male worshipers of Saluwe‟, and female worshipers of Illiir may never gain Divine Spell Casting (ta), nor may they ever take the Divine Archetype with their respective deities. Any time that Divine Spell Casting (ta) would no longer be considered a Limited Talent (such as through the Templar Background), replace the words “Divine Spell Casting” with “Rudimentary Prayers”. These groups may only learn Cants of their deity through the use of Rudimentary Prayers (ta) and Learn Spell (ta). Male ss‟ressen, male worshipers of Saluwe‟, and female worshipers of Illiir may never take Initiate of the Gods (ba), Initiate Itinerant (pa), or Anointed Priest (pa) with their respective deities. Male ss‟ressen may never take the Arcane Archetype at any time. Additionally, male ss‟ressen may never take Arcane Spell Casting (Eldritch), Prestidigitation (Eldritch source),
Rudimentary Spell Casting (ta) for Eldritch Spells, or Learn Spell (ta) for Eldritch Spells.
Levelling Cert
In order to maintain a more even level of play across the campaign, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign created the Blessed Lands Leveling Certificate for new players who have gotten involved with the campaign during A2-The Coming of the Destroyer. This allows Heroes a boost of 4,000 XP and 200 extra silver coins, allowing them to create their Hero at Tier 1.5 instead of the usual Tier 1.1. Any Hero which participated in any adventure from A1-Crusade! May not benefit from this certificate. All adventures from A1Crusade! May not be played using a character who has benefited from the Blessed Lands Levelling Certificate except for the following: A1-SP12 “A Thousand Words” A1-SP13 “Espionage” A1-SP14 “In Darkness, Light” A1-SP15 “To Slip the Surly Bonds The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign reserves the right to release future such Levelling Certificates, but as of the publication of this document no others are planned.
Character Rebuilds
As a side-effect of the vast number of available Hero creation options, as well as the inherent complexity in learning a new roleplaying game system, and because of the desire to accommodate players trying out different Hero builds, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign allows for Hero rebuilds in a number of situations.
6|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
You may rebuild all of your Hero‟s details anytime between adventures until such a time that the Hero in question has played five (5) adventures, or if your Hero has only played adventures specified as Introductory Adventures. Your Hero‟s experience, wealth, and any acquired items during these adventures remain the same as your first character build during this rebuild, even if the rebuild would alter any of these. For example, if you originally created a character with a starting silver of 20 silver coins, then created a Patrician with starting silver of 153 silver coins, you would retain the lower original 20 silver coins. If a new book in the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game series of books is released, you may make changes to your existing character based on the newly released materials. You are only make these changes once after a given book, and only if you are incorporating materials (or planning on incorporating materials) from that released material. Any changes made cannot fundamentally alter your character, and all changes must be legal as per the rules in this document as well as any provided Errata. Changes CANNOT include the following:
Altering the name or race of your Hero. All items and wealth currently held by the Hero at time of the rebuild cannot be changed.
Restricted Materials
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign attempts to provide as open of a playing field as we can. However, for story reasons the following items are restricted within the campaign unless specifically appearing on a Chronicle Page (CP), a different campaign-issued certificate, or within this document. Legendary Quality Items Items fashioned from special materials Magical items Kio swords of any Quality level, except in the cases of Kio Heroes Kio hauberk armor of any Quality level, except in the cases of Kio Heroes Permanent Runes Amalgamated Runes The Continued Training talent The Kurenthe‟ talent The Dual Faiths talent cannot be chosen with the combination of with Illiir and Saluwe‟. Tier III Summons
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign has provided valid statblocks for the Tier III summoning spells Blessed Protector , Summon High Elemental , and Summon Sarish’s Own. These statblocks are available for download on the Campaign Documents section of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign website. In the case of the Summon High Elemental statblocks, these are also available in the revised Sorcerous Pacts book released in the summer of 2016.
General Play Rules The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign is a fair-play campaign. This means that players are allowed to play their Hero as they wish to, so long as they are
7|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
doing so in such a way as to not unreasonably reduce the enjoyment of another player of the adventure. In situations where the fair-play rule is being abused or outright broken, the judge or Chronicler of the event has the authority to ask the offending player to leave the table. Prior incarnations of Arcanis-related campaigns took serious issue with cheating. While we continue to dislike people cheating, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign staff will not be actively policing this, except in cases where such cheating applies to the fair-play rules detailed in the previous paragraph. If the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign staff finds that excessive cheating is occurring, or that the intent of the fair-play rule is not being followed, this policy may be changed to reflect said events.
When running a LEGENDS OF ARCANIS adventure, the Chronicler (GM) has final jurisdiction on rules judgements and other issues that may arise. The Chronicler may make any ruling that they believe is suitable, so long as it does not contradict the campaign rules specified in this document, or any official Errata produced by Paradigm Concepts, Inc. We believe in our Chronicler‟s judgement for ingame rules changes, and we wish for them to make fair and quick decisions during a game, with follow-up questions or clarifications being sought on the Paradigm Concepts, Inc. forums if required. Please do not allow rules disputes to derail games, as the ultimate goal of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign is for players to have a good time!
Arcanis: Roleplaying Game book, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign staff has imposed the following rules for Fate Points: Every Hero begins each adventure with a number of Fate Points equal to their Fate Score (their lowest Attribute Score), plus or minus any additional Fate Points granted through Talents or Flaws, or from rewards granted to that Hero in the form of certificates or PCI Clothing (for example, the „Cert Shirt‟). A Chronicler may, at their discretion, give out additional Fate Points up to double a Hero‟s Fate Score during the adventure, but these Fate Points may not be carried over to any subsequent adventure. All Fate Scores are reset at the beginning of a new adventure. The Fate Point ability to avoid certain death per the Permanent Injury rules as presented on page 186 of the Codex of Heroes is limited to one use per adventure unless otherwise prohibited (such as during cases when the “Your Fate is Sealed” mechanics are in effect). Unless otherwise specified during an adventure, only one (1) Fate Point may be spent on a single action. Due to the potential for abuse, the use of Fate Points to “Do the Impossible” is restricted in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. It may not be used except in specific instances detailed by an Adventure Module (usually in a Chronicler‟s Note) or by a member of the Campaign Staff or PCI.

Heroes. These rules specify that should the amount of damage taken by any creature (after AR is taken into account) exceeds that creature‟s Fortitude defense, then that creature suffers a Wound. To counter act this, all Heroes of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign are granted 1 bonus Wound on top of their standard number of Wounds.
adventure instead. This restriction does not apply to those who have previously acted as Chronicler for this adventure, those who have been involved in editing this adventure, or even those who have previously read the adventure. It only applies to the writer of the adventure.
Hero vs. Hero Combat Table Size
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign balances its adventures for tables of 4 to 6 players. However, as life is far from perfect at the best of times, we acknowledge that these numbers are not always achievable. As such, the official table-size rules of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign is set at a minimum of three (3) players, and a maximum of seven (7) players. Because of the difficulties in managing tables of seven players, a Chronicler has the right to refuse to judge a table of that many players, lowering the maximum size to six (6) players.
Replaying Adventures
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign allows players to replay adventures however many times that they would like to. However, you are limited to a limit of a single (1) play through of a given adventure for EACH Hero character that you are playing. While the first time you play an adventure you may gain a Certificate Page (also known as a CP), all subsequent play throughs of an adventure by a player (with a different Hero character) grant that Hero the Replay Certificate Page (also known as an RCP) instead of the standard Certificate Page or a Volunteer Certificate Page (also known as a VCP). If you have written an adventure, you may not play that adventure. You gain the Volunteer Chronicler Page for that
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign does not generally, allow for Hero vs. Hero combat, or any other violent encounter between Heroes, to occur. There are a number of reasons why this is not allowed, most stemming from the fair-play policy of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign in that many players do not find this fun. In the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, any Hero who intentionally strikes another Hero (outside of cases when the first Hero is under a some in-game effect compelling them to do so) and does Wound damage, or those who conspire to deal Wound damage by aiding and abetting foes during combat (not including adventurespecific instances when this is allowed) may be removed from legal campaign play at the end of the adventure by, and at the discretion of, the Chronicler. Should the Chronicler deem that the Hero should still be allowed to legally be played, that Hero (and if necessary, that player) should not be invited to sit with the offended players at the original table. Furthermore, any Hero who elects to steal or destroy another Hero‟s equipment, funds, magical items, or any other possession is also removed from legal campaign play at the end of the adventure at the discretion of the Chronicler, and certainly should not be invited to play with the offending Hero in future adventures. There are, after all, consequences to such actions.
9|LEGENDS OF ARCANIS CAMPAIGN GUIDE- JULY 1, 2016
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign acknowledges that not all cases of the above events are equal, and therefore hesitate on issuing a blanket global rule in terms of removing Heroes from legal campaign play. However, the position of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign is that if you, as a player, consciously choose to take an action (without specific in-game compulsion) which will cause harm to another Hero or their possessions without that other Hero‟s consent, then you have shown that you wish to have that Hero removed from the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. It should also be noted that any Hero who is vanquished at the hands of their fellow Heroes suffer all the usual penalties found in the campaign (including death if all Heroes of one side are Vanquished). To do otherwise devalues the decisions of other players to sacrifice their Heroes. Advanced Maneuvers and Spells
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign allows Heroes to make use of the Advanced Maneuver and Advanced Spell features of the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game series. However, all such Advanced Maneuvers and/or Spells must be approved by your Chronicler prior to the beginning of an adventure, with a physical copy of the Advanced Maneuver or Spell being on-hand for review. Chroniclers are allowed to audit Advanced Maneuvers and Spells and at their discretion, disallow their use at their tables if the Advanced Maneuver or Spell fails to meet the rules for creating them. The rules for creating Advanced Maneuvers and Advanced Spells can be found in the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game book, with the rules presented in the book subject to change as per any Paradigm Concepts, Inc. Errata Document released which includes them.
To emphasize the rule, only Arcane Spells of the Thaumaturgy, Eldritch, Primal, Sorcerer-Priest of Sarish, and Psionic sources may be combined to create Advanced Spells. Divine spells as gained through the Divine Spell Casting talent cannot be combined to form Advanced Spells, and neither can spells from different sources be combined with each other to create Advanced Spells unless a Talent is gained which allows them to do so.
Spell Casting Between Scenes
It is possible to cast spells between scenes in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. These spells are considered to be cast in the break between Scenes, and in the case of spells with Duration: Scene are considered to be cast during the following Scene (for example, if you cast the spell between Scenes 2 and 3, the Scene Spell‟s duration is for Scene 3). To ensure consistency across the campaign, all spells must be cast using only the Hero‟s Passive Casting Value (ie: this spell cannot be rolled for additional Adaptations) and may only be cast a single time (ie: cannot cast the spell on multiple individuals).
Campaign Economy The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign grants Heroes the opportunity to both earn money and items, spend those monies and items, and trade them between Heroes. While the campaign strives to not limit the options of Heroes, some rules have to be put in place to ensure fair-play among the entire breadth of the campaign. This section deals with how money, items, relics, and other such items are managed by a Hero.
10 | L E G E N D S O F A R C A N I S C A M P A I G N G U I D E - J U L Y 1 , 2 0 1 6
Purchasing Items
During any standard adventure which enters a town or a city (or, in some cases, even some that do not), a Hero may purchase any number of mundane items. Non-magical, non-Runic items up to Exceptional Quality may be purchased in any adventure at the discretion of the Chronicler. Chroniclers are encouraged to only allow Heroes to purchase items appropriate to the scope and location of the adventure. As such, if the Heroes are in a small rural farming village, it is highly unlikely that the Hero would be able to purchase an Exceptional Quality sword. Similarly, if the Hero is in Pahjiro in the League of Princes, being able to purchase a suit of Cancerese Gothic Plate is similarly unlikely. All items cost their listed prices, as presented in sources such as Table 2-23, 224, 2-25, 2-26, 2-28, 2-29, 2-30, 2-31, 2-32, 2-33, 2-34, and 2-35 of the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game book. Chroniclers may wish to haggle prices with the Heroes, but should not diverge significantly from these listed prices. Selling and Trading Items
Items that are listed in the Items Found section of a Chronicle Page (CP) may never be traded or sold for money. Any item that was gained through in-adventure purchases or at Character Creation (if tradable) may be traded between Heroes of different players during adventures. Relic Pages which do not specify that they cannot be traded may be traded between Heroes of different players, but cannot be sold for money. Any legal exchange of an item between Heroes may be performed during an adventure and should be noted in the lefthand record keeping area of the Chronicle Page (CP) of that adventure with the Chronicler of that adventure initialing the
transaction record and certifying the accuracy of the respective Chronicle Pages. When selling sellable items for money that are legally able to be sold, such th items are sold for one-tenth (1/10 ) their market value as listed in sources such as the Arcanis: Roleplaying Game book .
Earning Money
Heroes within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign are not allowed to use the “Earning a Living” skill option. This is because LIVING ARCANIS no longer demands that they pay their personal upkeep and lifestyle costs, and it is assumed that they are paying for this lifestyle out of their professional skills between adventures. Crafting Unless otherwise specified during an adventure, Heroes are not allowed to craft items, Runes, alchemical products, or Materia Medica items. Magic Items
At present magic items are not allowed to be purchased or sold by Heroes unless specifically allowed within a given adventure. Some opportunities may arise during conventions or Story Scenarios such as LARPs to purchase such items, but presently the only means of acquiring such rare items is through adventure-specific rewards and Relics. Magic Scrolls
At present magical scrolls are not allowed to be purchased or sold by Heroes unless specifically allowed within a given adventure. Some opportunities may arise during conventions or Story Scenarios such as LARPs to purchase such items, but presently the only means of acquiring such rare items is through adventure-specific rewards and Relics.
11 | L E G E N D S O F A R C A N I S C A M P A I G N G U I D E - J U L Y 1 , 2 0 1 6
Rune Availability
Heroes may purchase any nonrestricted Rune during any adventure set within a town or a city which contains a Runesmith. This information will be provided in the Campaign Related Information at the beginning of an adventure. Chronicler‟s should use discretion on approving what Runes players can get crafted while in these spaces, as in some cases they are inappropriate to the city where they are crafted. For example, if you are in Lampeltis in the Sulfur Marsh, you are unlikely to be able to have a Nerothspecific Rune crafted. Due to the rarity of opportunities for elorii and ss‟ressen Heroes to have Runes specific to their races crafted, once per Hero Tier they may get a rune specific to their race crafted in a city location they normally would not be able to get such a Rune. For example, once per Tier an elorii Hero could get a Belisarda Rune crafted in the First City, even if normally such a rune would not be available. All Runes are purchased as per the listed prices found on page 6 of Forged in Magic, Volume 1 and should be noted in the left-hand record keeping area of the Chronicle Page (CP) of that adventure, specifying which item it has been scribed to, with the Chronicler of that adventure initialing the transaction record and certifying the accuracy of the respective Chronicle Pages. Heroes may only purchase Runes of their Hero Tier or lower. Spell Rune Limitations
In the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, when choosing a spell for a Spell Rune Heroes cannot choose spells unique to a specific group without Campaign certification, nor may they purchase spells of a higher Tier than their Hero Tier. This means that a val‟Mehan cannot have a Spell
Rune created for a unique val‟Assante‟ Heritage spell, nor could a ss‟ressen gain access to an Elder spell that only an elorii could cast. All spells taken must be from the common list available to a given group and not be specific to a single group except in the following situations: - If you have a Favor with a specific group (such as the val‟Mehan Family), you may gain access to a single one of the spells unique to that group by expending the Favor. - If you are at a table with another Hero who knows the particular spell and you are in an adventure in which you could legally purchase Runes, you may negotiate with that player to have their Hero aid in the production of the Rune. In this case, the player in question must sign the Chronicle Page, stating that you have their express permission to use this spell.
Campaign Documentation The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign uses two primary certificate types to help keep track of experience, items, money, fame, and other factors gained during adventures. These two types are Chronicle Pages and Relic Pages. Additionally, other types of certificates exist within the campaign giving specific players the right to play certain races, use certain items, or take certain Paths that are otherwise unavailable to most players. Some of these certificates have been released as part of the campaign, while others are rewards given to volunteers, and others are rewards from things like the Arcanis: The Cradle of Empires – The First City Sourcebook Kickstarter campaign.

Chronicle Pages
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign uses Chronicle Pages (CPs) to track items such as experience, money, Fame, and a variety of other in-game statistics. These Chronicle Pages serves as both a record of the outcome of a given adventure as well as a log of your Hero‟s current wealth, experience, and fame. You are not required to carry all earned Chronicle Pages with you at official events. However, any Chronicle Page which contains relevant story-achievements for your character, found items that your Hero uses regularly, and your most recently obtained Chronicle Page with your up-todate character information must be present with you at all LEGENDS OF ARCANIS adventures. A Chronicle Page must be signed by the adventure‟s Chr onicler to be valid. If the Chronicler wishes, they may substitute their email address in place of their signature. Some Chronicle Pages, typically those from Special Events run by the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign are not signed, and instead bear the name of the current campaign director or a member of Paradigm Concepts, Inc. These are considered to be valid Chronicle Pages. Chronicle pages are not transferrable between Heroes, and neither are any printed achievements or loot listed on a Chronicle page unless specified by the Chronicler in question or the adventure from where it was obtained. There are three primary types of Chronicle Pages: Chronicle Pages : These are the standard player Chronicle Pages, as detailed above. Because LEGENDS OF ARCANIS adventures may be played multiple times (though only once per Hero character), you may only ever as a player gain one (1) Chronicle Page from the first time
you played the adventure. All subsequent play throughs gain you the Replay Chronicle Page. Volunteer Chronicle Pages (VCP) : These are special Chronicle Pages granted to the Chronicler of a specific adventure. This Chronicle Page typically offers similar rewards to the standard player Chronicle Page, but the Chronicler‟s reward is not determined by the actions of the adventure. For this certificate to be valid, all the players at your table need to sign the Volunteer Chronicle Page. Because LEGENDS OF ARCANIS adventures may be played multiple times (though only once per Hero character), you may only ever as a player gain one (1) Volunteer Chronicle Page from the first time you ran the adventure. All subsequent play throughs gain you the Replay Chronicle Page, regardless of if you are a player or a Chronicler. Additionally, the author of the adventure automatically gains the Volunteer Chronicle Page, which they can apply to one (1) Hero Replay Chronicle Pages (RCP) : These are special Chronicle Pages given out to both players and Chroniclers upon subsequent play throughs of a given adventure. Because you are familiar with the details of the adventure, most Replay Chronicle Pages do not allow you to obtain certain rewards that a player may wish to „cherry pick‟ for secondary characters. Most Replay Chronicle Pages grant only experience, money, and any Fame that may be obtained through the adventure.

Relic Page
Relic pages are special LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign documents which can be found in some adventures. These certifications describe and give permission to use any number of unique items which may be found in an adventure. Unless otherwise stated, these items cannot be sold for money, but may be traded between Heroes. If they are traded, the Relic Page needs to be signed by both involved players and the Chronicler.

Available Runes: Avalanche, Perseverance, Shadow, Sorcery
Special Rewards
Origins 2009 – Dedicated Judge
Some LEGENDS OF ARCANIS adventures may contained specially labelled reward certificates. These certificates are not allocated to a specific Hero, and are instead issued to the player and may be applied to multiple specific Heroes. If you have multiple Special Rewards you may only gain the benefits of a single Special Reward in a single four (4)hour adventure. For every Hero Tier after first, you may add an additional PCI Clothing Item or Special Reward granting a similar bonus for use in a single four-hour adventure (for a maximum of five (5) PCI Clothing or Special Rewards per four-hour adventure for Tier V Heroes). You may only use PCI Clothing items or Special Reward bonus in a given action (similar to Fate Points).
This certificate, issued to volunteer judges at the finale of LIVING ARCANIS has been changed to reflect the realities of the final Arcanis: Roleplaying Game rules developed after the original Quickplay rules were released in 2010.

PCI Clothing At various past conventions, typically Origins Game Fair and GenCon Indy, Paradigm Concepts, Inc. has released special shirts available at their booth which grant in-game benefits in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. These shirts are presently (at time of this writing) available for purchase, though several are currently in circulation. These PCI Clothing items may only be used during a LEGENDS OF ARCANIS event if the item is physically present at the table. You do not need to be wearing the article of clothing during the event, but need to have them with them at the table. You

Fame and Factions As of July 2016, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign will be tracking Fame for both Secret Societies as well as National Fame. While in prior versions of the campaign did not offer tangible benefits for fame, infamy, as well as things like “Notice of” or “Favor of” which have appeared in previous adventures. As of July, 2016, Heroes will be able to transfer their Fame between Factions and Secret Societies as per the rules listed below. Fame Tiers and Changes from the
Codex
of H eroes
As presented in the Codex of Heroes on page 36, Fame works in Tiers similar to character progression in the Arcanis Roleplaying Game system. In this system, you require ten (10) Fame to reach the next Tier, with various Tiers of Fame required for certain benefits. The most visible of these benefits is entry into specific Paths which are found in the same book such as Keeper of Forgotten Lore (pa), Champion of the Silver Chalice (pa), or Wayfarer (pa). These Paths, in their requirements, require a certain Fame Tier for entry, with the Initiate Wayfarer requires a Fame Tier of 1.5
(functionally 15 Fame with the Azure Way) to qualify. However, due to the less-specific nature of the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, which is designed for general play and not exactly storylines focused on specific groups and secret societies, it is much more difficult to accumulate that much Fame with a specific Secret Society. As such, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign will be reducing the amount of Fame to achieve each Fame Tier from ten (10) to four (4), with a maximum Fame cap of 20 (Fame Tier 5), as well as removing the multiples of 0.5. Thereby, all path which require Fame for entry have their Tier requirements rounded down to the nearest whole number. This will mean that to gain entry in the Master Archeologist (pa) as presented in the Codex of Heroes in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, you now require only twelve (12) Fame to reach the Fame Tier of 3 that is required instead of the previous 35 Fame that would have been required to meet the requirements of Fame Tier 3.5. Additionally, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign will be streamlining the accounting of Fame and Infamy. In the Codex of Heroes (pg. 36), Infamy is a separately tracked value which increases the threshold required to advance to a new Fame Tier. In the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, Infamy counts as negative Fame, reducing your total Fame with that organization. This has the same effect as the system as presented in the Codex of Heroes, but will require less accounting. As such, if a Hero had five (5) points of Fame with the Kingdom of Milandir and two (2) points of Infamy, they now have a net Fame with the Kingdom of Milandir of three (3). Nations and Secret Societies
The LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign will be using both national and

regional factions. Examples of the types of Nations and Regions which may be considered national and regional factions can be found on Table 2-6 of Arcanis: Roleplaying Game and are granted by adventures based on the actions of your Hero. Tracking your Fame with these factions will be done via Story Achievement entries on Chronicle Pages. Secret Societies are also valid choices for Fame within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign. If you wish for your Hero(es) to join a Secret Society, all of the valid Secret Societies can be found in the Codex of Whispers section of the Codex of Heroes book. All of the Secret Societies are available for a Hero to choose, though the Laerestri is limited to elorii from the Vastwood nation of Elonbe‟ at present. However, you can gain Fame with Secret Societies that you are not a member of, based on adventure Story Achievements. Tracking your Fame with these factions will be done via Story Achievement entries on Chronicle Pages. The Paradigm Concepts, Inc. Forums also have special subforums for specific Secret Societies. If you wish to join one of these subforums, please send a Private Message to a forum administrator to grant you permission to view and post on these forums. You may only have access to a single Secret Society subforum per user account on the Paradigm Concepts, Inc. Forums. Fame and Infamy
Many adventures in the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign grant Heroes Fame or Infamy with several different factions based on their actions. Fame is typically granted by successfully completing missions for, or for performing acts to support a given faction. Fame with a faction is cumulative, and can be used for various benefits within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign,
including access to special Paths unique to a given faction. Infamy, on the other hand, acts as a form of negative Fame, and is subtracted from your existing Fame score with a particular faction. You typically gain Infamy by consciously failing to perform a mission for a given faction or by consciously acting against the best interest of a given faction. For example, if you have five (5) Fame with the Coryani Empire and consciously perform an action which damages the Empire, you would receive 1 Infamy with the Coryani Empire, thereby reducing your Fame score with them from 5 to 4. Should a Hero ever gain more Infamy than Fame, then that Hero begins to suffer penalties with that given faction. Should a Hero ever reach -5 Fame with any Faction, that Hero gains the Branded flaw (for national factions), the Heretic flaw (for religious factions), or the Marked Man flaw (for Secret Societies) with that particular Faction. This flaw remains until that Hero has increased their Fame Score with that particular faction back to at least 1 Fame (specifically, for their Fame Score with that faction being a positive number). Should a Hero every reach -10 Fame with any Faction, they will actively be targeted for assassination. Such assassination scenes may be included in future Adventures. Primary Factions
Within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, each character is allowed three Factions: your home nation, your religious affiliation, and your chosen Secret Society. A Factions represent the allegiance of a Hero and determines in-game effects such as what Paths are available to that Hero. Home nation is determined at character creation and represents the land in which you were raised. In the case of the
16 | L E G E N D S O F A R C A N I S C A M P A I G N G U I D E - J U L Y 1 , 2 0 1 6
Exile/Expatriate background, your Primary Faction is the nation in which you are presently a citizen, not the nation from which you are an Exile or Expatriate. Religious affiliation is also determined from your starting nation at character creation. For example, a Hero from the Coryani Empire, the League of Princes, or the Republic of Altheria defaults as a follower of the Mother Church of Coryan; while an eloran Hero defaults as a follower of Belisarda. It is possible at character creation to have no religious faction (as is the case for members of the Mourners in Silence Secret Society), though in most nations this would be considered heresy to openly declare. In this case, you would have no Faction for religion. Secret Societies can be chosen at any time during a Hero‟s adventuring career, but once one is chosen it is as immutable as the Hero‟s national and religious af filiations. Most Secret Societies are open to all Heroes, although some Secret Societies have more restricted membership. For example, the Laerestri Secret Society is only open to elorii from the nation of Elonbe‟ in the Vastwood.
Spending Fame
In the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, a Hero can temporarily spend their Fame with their Primary Factions in a similar way to Fate Points (as presented on page 9 of this document). During an Adventure, a Hero may use their current Fame with any of their three (3) Primary factions to ask for various boons and favors, at Chronicler‟s discretion. This represents a Hero calling upon their influence with their Primary Factions to ask for favors, with their Fame Score representing a limit as to what that faction is willing to grant them. Once a Hero has gained three (3) Fame with one of their Primary Factions, they may spend their Fame as per below for the following Boons: Fame Points Spent 1
Other Factions
Other Factions represent all other factions with the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign which are not a Hero‟s three Factions. In the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, it is entirely possible for a Hero to perform missions supporting factions which are not their specific Faction. In doing these missions, those Heroes may gain either Fame or Infamy with that Faction. However, a Hero may not apply their Fame to gain access to faction-specific bonuses, Paths, Backgrounds, or any other in-game benefit without specific permission from the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign staff.

Possible Boon
You may ask your Faction for the loan of any single item of Good quality or less with a value of 25 Sc or less. This item is granted at Chronicler‟s discretion based on the likelihood that a given faction would have such an item. For example, the Laerestri are unlikely to have access to a Flintlock Toolkit. You may reroll a Streetwise: Gossip (Ch) Action Skill Roll as you tap into your own information network in the city to fill in any holes you may have missed. You may ask your Faction for the loan of any single item of Good quality or less with a value of 50 Sc or less. This item is granted at Chronicler‟s discretion based on the likelihood that a given faction

would have such an item. For a single Action Skill Roll you are treated as having an Information Network (as per the talent) in the city you are in. This Boon may only be applied at Chronicler‟s discretion as some Factions would not have a presence in all locations. For example, you would not be able to use your contacts with the Mother Church of Coryan if you were in Zhuan in the Hainese Empire as that faction has little to no presence in that city. You may ask your Faction for the loan of any single item of Fine quality or less with a value of 75 Sc or less. This item is granted at Chronicler‟s discretion based on the likelihood that a given faction would have such an item. For a single Adventure, you are treated as having an Information Network (as per the talent) in the city you are in. This Boon may only be applied at Chronicler‟s discretion as some Factions would not have a presence in all locations. For example, you would not be able to use your contacts with the Mother Church of Coryan if you were in Zhuan in the Hainese Empire as that faction has little to no presence in that city. You may ask your Faction for the loan of any single item of Fine quality or less with a value of 100 Sc or less. This item is granted at Chronicler‟s discretion based on the likelihood that a given faction

would have such an item. You may gain access to the resources of your Faction to heal a single Wound. Use of this Boon is at Chronicler‟s discretion as the Hero may not necessarily be in a location to make use of this Boon (for example, they may be in a Fervidite mine and incapable of contacting their Primary faction for such aid). You may ask your Faction for the loan of any single item of Exceptional quality or less with a value of 125 Sc or less. This item is granted at Chronicler‟s discretion based on the likelihood that a given faction would have such an item. You may leverage your contacts to grant you the resources to gain personal access to a single Ansharan Portal. This only applies to a single passage of you personally through a Portal, and the use of this ability is at a Chronicler‟s discretion based on the adventure in question. For example, you would not be able to use this Boon if you wish to access a Portal in the middle of a forest with no means of accessing it or communicating with your Primary Faction.
As mentioned in several Boons, the use of these action is at Chronicler‟s discretion and should be based on the Factions available in an adventure, which are typically listed in the Adventure before the Introduction Scene. Additionally, a Hero who has the Feathermen as one of their Primary Factions

may never make use of any Boon aside from those granting bonuses to Streetwise: Gossip (Ch) or Information Network (ta).
Changing Factions
Within the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign you can change one of your three (3) Factions, but at a cost. You may only change your Faction to another Faction of a similar type of which you have at least 5 Fame with. You may change any of the three Factions that you have in this way to another that you would otherwise legally be able to have. For example, a val‟Holryn would not be able to change their nationality from the Kingdom of Milandir to Entaris, but they would be able to change their Faction to the Coryani Empire. Similarly, an elorii would not be able to join the Orthodoxy. When you change your Faction, any positive Fame you have becomes an equal amount of negative Fame. For example, if you have six (6) Fame with the Mother Church of Coryan and convert to the Milandisian Orthodox Church, you now have -6 Fame with the Mother Church of Coryan. Additionally, all Faction-specific bonuses you had with your Faction no longer function. For example, if you were a Knight of Milandir and change your Primary Faction from the Kingdom of Milandir to Republic of Altheria, you lose all benefits gained from the Knight‟s Code talent. As with all rules, there are limitations as to what factions certain groups can choose as a new Faction. You may never change allegiance either to or from an elorii nation (such as Elonbe‟ or Entaris), except insofar as to change allegiance between those two nations. As such, and elorii can never become a Coryani citizen, and a Kio can never become a citizen of Entaris.
Changing your allegiance does not give you permission to enter Paths, take talents, or gain items which are restricted either to race or to native people of that new nation. The primary example of this is with the Kio, in that if you are not a Kio you will not be given permission to take the Kio Duelist Path or purchase a Kio Sword or Kio Hauberk. Shifting allegiance from the Feathermen, at present, does not follow the above rules. If you change your Primary Secret Society from the Feathermen to another Secret Society it simply results in all your Fame with the Feathermen being lost, with your Fame Score with that faction dropping to zero (0). Fame vs. Favors
During the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign there have been a number of “Favors of XXX” or “Disfavor of YYY” granted in various Adventures, with many such Favors or Disfavors having no specific benefit or penalty. As of the publication of this document, unless a Favor has a listed benefit (such as the Favor of the Dovitoni in the adventure A2-SP12 Unbated and Envenomed ), all Favors and Disfavors gain the following Benefits: A Favor may be used to cancel a Disfavor from the same faction/group/individual. This uses up the Favor (and Disfavor), and they are removed from the relevant CP. You suffer a -1 Penalty on all Social Action Skill Rolls made with a faction/group/individual for each Disfavor you have with that
19 | L E G E N D S O F A R C A N I S C A M P A I G N G U I D E - J U L Y 1 , 2 0 1 6
faction/group/individual. In the case of Favors with large groups (such as the Republic of Altheria), you only gain this penalty when interacting with those of high station such as a General, a King, or the Patriarch of a Patrician family associated with that power. At Chronicler‟s discretion, you may spend a Favor with a given faction/group/individual to gain the benefits of a one-time expenditure of 3 Fame Points with that faction/group/individual. If you have multiple Favors with a given faction, you may either spend them individually or combine them to get the above benefit multiple times. For example, if you have two (2) Favors of the Inquisition, you may gain a single boon equivalent to spending 6 Fame Points. Spending Favors removes them from the Hero‟s CP, and prevents the use of any future benefits that that Favor may grant in later adventures.
The Harvesters of Ymandragore At various points during the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign, Heroes who cast spells from the Elder, Eldritch, Psionic, Primal, and Arcanesourced casters of the Sorcerer-Priest of Sarish magical Sources may have gained the Notice of the Harvester. As of the writing of this document this has not significantly affected a Hero, but from the date of this document it now will. At any point during an Adventure which has been stated as having a potential Harvester Combats, a Chronicler may insert one of the pregenerated Harvester Scenes which are
provided for download on the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign website. A Harvester Combat‟s difficulty is determined by the number of Notices of the Harvester (also known as Notice Points) a Hero has accumulated. The Combat will consist of a number of Harvester Combat stats equal to the number of Notices present at the table, up to a Tier equivalent to the highest number of Notices a single Hero has received. For example, if a Table has only a single Hero with a single Notice of the Harvesters, they will face one (1) group of the pre-generated Tier I Harvesters. If a table has a total of three (3) Notices of the Harvesters between two Heroes (one with a single Notices, another with two Notices), they may fight up to three (3) Tier‟s of pregenerated Harvesters, either as 3x the Tier I Harvesters or a single group each of Tier I and Tier II Harvesters (Chronicler‟s discretion) Should a Hero defeat a group of Harvesters, the Heroes who cast spells from the Elder, Eldritch, Psionic, Primal, and Arcane-sourced casters of the SorcererPriest of Sarish who were involved in the combat who used their arcane spells will gain an additional Notice of the Harvester for having survived the attempted Harvest. While it is possible for Chronicler‟s to create their own stats for Harvesters, the LEGENDS OF ARCANIS campaign asks that the common statistics provided on the Campaign website be used. This file is called the “Legends of Arcanis Campaign: Sample Harvester Fights ” and will be available from the same downloads page as this document. Any custom Harvesters should adhere to the same Encounter Tier Values and Tiers of the provided fights to ensure balance.
