As Nelson Mandela once said, “The roots of education is bitter, but the fruit (of it) is sweet”. Education is the key to success. It is the ath to our drea!s, drea!s that"ll brin# us to a better future. $ut, what if there are so!e chan#es chan# es in our education syste!% &ill it be !ore 'ualitatie% r will it *ust !ake our lies rou#h%
+ood day ladies and #entle!an, I a! arl -oy $. +ona, a senior hi#h school student of Ada!son /niersity and a stron# adocate of 01 ro#ra!. I a! here today toda y in front of you to discuss the challen#es hence the oortunities o ortunities brou#ht to us by the said ro#ra!.
The 'uality of education in the 2hiliines is at all3ti!e low. It is unfortunately true. Accordin# to a reort, the 2hiliines is one the 4 re!ainin# countries in Asia stuck in a 053year basic education syste!. That is why Enhanced $asic Education Act of 1504 or -eublic Act No. 05644 or fa!iliarly known as 01 7urriculu! was si#ned into law to under#ird the low 'uality of education of the country. This !ade kinder#arten !andatory before enterin# #rade school and additional 1 years on hi#h school which is called “senior hi#h school”.
The old curriculu! has i!recise sub*ects and were too !uch non3ractical. 8ue to lack of ractical alications, students that hae #raduated fro! the old curriculu! were not yet ready to enter colle#e. 9o!e can:t ursue their colle#e c olle#e education because of financial instability so they tend to find work i!!ediately which are !ost likely has a s!aller chance to haen for they are less than 0; years old and are too youn# for labor force. $ecause $ec ause of this so!e circu!stances, rofessional #raduates here in the country are not #lobally reco#nied as if they are also #reatly reco#nied here.
As an adocate for 01 ro#ra!, I knew and ad!it that there are challen#es brou#ht not *ust for !e but also for the entire nation with the shiftin# into a new education syste!. 01 ro#ra! !a y sound unleasant for those students who want to #raduate in colle#e i!!ediately for they can find work easily as well as to those arents who barely earn as low as 2655 daily. They They thou#ht that this new education ro#ra! will cost the! !ore. 8efinitely true. There are challen#es that we<e faced durin# the transition of this new curriculu! fro! the old ones. It"s been 6 years
since this ro#ra! was i!le!ented but there are still arious #rous and critics that are still insistin# that the country is not yet reared for this i!le!entation. =et"s talk about first with the readiness of the #oern!ent, the i!le!entin# a#ency (8eEd) articularly.
=ack of learnin# !aterials and facilities still obstruct the 01 i!le!entation. The unaailability of learnin# !aterials is *ust one of the roble!s still houndin# the country"s new basic education ro#ra!. The teachers, *ust to !ake sure that their student will learn the lessons easily, hae to shoulder the shortco!in#s of the #oern!ent, which has yet to reco#nie their sacrifice as they hae not resonded to their aeal for salary increase. A need in facilities for additional 1 years in hi#h school is still in worry. The 8eart!ent of Education then i!le!ented a ro#ra! that will #ie financial assistance for students that will continue senior hi#h in riate schools, for they knew that there are no facilities in ublic schools that will acco!!odate the inco!in# senior hi#h students. This !ade critics say that the 01 2ro#ra! is ro3riate school and that the !ain ai! of this ro#ra! is for the riate schoo ls to increase their reenue.
&e should not deny that this new curriculu! hae benefits not *ust for us but for the e ntire nation. It will hel our education syste! !ore 'ua litatie. The new 01 curriculu! hae !ore ractical sub*ects that will !ake >iliino students !ore #lobally co!etitie and choose their career based on their skills and abilities. The students will also hae !ore ti!e to choose the ri#ht career that suits their skill and ability and will be !ore ca able to confront with their colle#e career. And if so, of that hae no fund to ursue colle#e de#ree, at least when they #raduated senior hi#h school, they are already 'ualified for a *ob and can already !ake a liin#.
Mainly, 01 is ery beneficial to each one of us. 7hallen#es !a y hinder to fully i!le!ent the new education ro#ra! and !ay !ake our lies rou#h, it can at least !ake us !ore #lobally co!etitie. &hy don"t we #ie it a try first before i!osin# ne#atie oinions abou t the said ro#ra!% And if we think that it is only a burden to lar#e nu!ber of >iliino fa!ilies, !i#ht as well re'uest to ostone the ro#ra!. It can really hel us in !akin# our lies easier when it co!es to !akin# a liin# for the future.
The education is truly bitter. It is not easy to achiee fro! each one of us. &e think that we will
*ust tackle a strai#ht ath towards our #oals but the truth is, it is a chaotic line. &e should encoura#e ourseles to ursue our drea!s because no one else is #oin# to do it for us and when we finally achieed these #oals, the fruit is definitely sweeter than we thou#ht. $efore I leae this sta#e, I want to leae you a !essa#e that you should always re!e!ber? “Attitude is eerythin#” it is like, we should not *ust be schooled, we should also be educated enou#h.
Thank you and #ood afternoon.
