Preface

One of the serious problems which parents of educated girls face these days in metropolitan cities is the problem of delayed marriages of their daughters. This brochure is to produce a replicable and dependable research on this subjects. The participants in this research are: 1. Dr.(Mrs.) Sarla Prasad, a retired medical doctor by profession and a Jyotish Acharya with many years of experience in astrological research also now, she has married off two of her children and is therefore well experienced in the subject under study. 2. Dr.(Mrs.) Shri Rama Mishra, a retired Reader of Economics in a college of Delhi University by profession and a Jyotish Acharya with many years of experience in astrological research also now, she has married off two of her daughters and is therefore well experienced in the subject under study. 3. Mrs Shalini Dhasmana a highly educated housewife and a Jyotish Acharya with many years of experience in astrological research also now, she has married off one of her daughters and is therefore well experienced in the subject under study. 4. Mrs. DraupadI Rai, a teacher by profession and a Jyotish Acharya with many years of experience In astrological research also now, her children are not yet married though they are at marriageable age. All these partidpants have also produced their researches on different aspects of astrology and got published their researches in the Journal of Astrology and have also been the co authors of some books like Dwadashottari Dasha (Dr.(Mrs.) Shri Rama Mishra coauthored it with Pawar) and Famous Women to which ail the contributors have written their pieces on some of the famous women of the world. Shalini Dhasmana has also written a book on Pataki Rishta Chakra. Approach It is well known that in no dassical book of astrology is there any hint on timing the marriage of girls except in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra where the timing is shown without any dasha and only on the basis of the placement of some planets in the charts of boys Srnd girls. In the times in which those books were written, the marriage of a girl may not have 6

been much of a problem £s most of the marriages took place in the same or neighbouring villages and were arranged mostly through people known to families of both the bride and the bridegroom. Interestingly, many of those marriages were fixed on the suggestion of family barbers who were something of itenerant marriage bureau. In majority of those marriages, no tallying of horoscopes was done and the marriages being traditional, because it was believed that only death could separate the couple. We are taking up cases here only of girls of educated parents, themselves educated and placing more emphasis on their careers and therefore delaying their decisions to marry. Right or wrong, the desire of girls to marry late is a big source of agony for Hindu parents. Astrologers must wake up to this reality and do a new and dependable research to meet this urgent requirement of the parents of modern society in metropolitican cities. We are not talking of unorthodox marriages in this treatise. Our purpose is only to show the timing of marriage and how the factors delaying marriage work. We are aware that this limited approach has its own limitations. Blocks The aim of this research is to ascertain the age block in which a girl's marriage falls. For this purpose we are taking the following The base year for calculation is twenty two (22 years). Do calculations and see in which block of the marriage a girl falls. 1. The first is between 22 and 25 years. 2. The second is between 25 and 28 years. 3. The third is between 28 and 31 years. 4. The fourth is between 31 and 34 years. 5. The fifth is between 34 and 37 years. 6. The sixth is between 38 and 40 years. 7. The seventh is between 40 and 43 years. Marriage after the age of forty is more for companionship and old age preparation and is not a normal marriage for a girl, particularly in India and among Hindus. Sample Size In the researches we produce in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, the sample size used runs into many hundreds which can be understood thus: if thirty students test them on ten horoscopes each and the participants test them on thirty each, we cross the three hundred mark easily. test these randomly on almost every horoscope we see. Thus the sample size is never less than a thousand though for the sake of brevity, forced on by the limitations of space, we show as illustrations only twenty five horoscopes here. This research has been tested on many more horoscopes by each participant and has been tested even by some other astrology researchers not participating in the writing of this book. Data The data used in the book is the personal data of the participants. The horoscopes used are authentic and in many cases some predictions too have been given to the natives whose horoscopes find place here. The data used is of Hindu girls of India only though for our illustration we have used some foreign horoscopes also to show that our research is applicable to any horoscope of any girl anywhere in the world. We have not used the NO MARRIAGE horoscopes here which will be a logical consequence of an overdelayed marriage. Technical Analysis Technical analysis of the data done here is on the following lines — 1. The birth horoscope has been used mostly, and sometimes also the navamsha. 2. The dasha used is Vimshottari. the most popular and familiar dasha though we have made a reference here and there to other dashas. 3. For the purpose of our analysis we have taken twenty two years as the base year for marriage and have added the delaying factors with a mathematical formulae which may undergo change if and when we feel it necessary to modify them. Conclusions The conclusions arrived at, also tabulated statistically, are, as can be seen, veiy scientific and repiicabie. Observations Some observations given in the book will need more intensive testing to make them dependable points of astrological predictions in future years. But as will be seen, the purpose of this research will have been well served if the crisp, precise and scientific approach given here is found trustworthy for predictions about the marriages of girls whose anxious parents seek an answer. 8

Dr. (Mrs.) Shri Rama Mishra Since the time of Ramayan and Mahabharat marriage in India is considered essential for absolving "Pitri Rina" In Royal families the main consideration used to be of a Royal family immaterial of the fact how far is the place or what is language, but in middle ages in middle class families caste, religion and language were the main considerations for marriage therefore, the area of consideration of marriage started shrinking. With economic development the preference of educaiton, career, service etc. started changing. There are changes in the size of the family - we now have nuclear families, therefore children want to settle down first and then marry. Education is an important consideration for girls. They want to complete certain level of education before marriage. All this results in pushing up the eligibility age of marriage or right age of marriage. Earllar, the age of marriage used to be 15 to 18 years, at present it is about 20-22 years and in metropolitan cities, may be 22-25 years. Hence if a girl is married before 25 years of age it is considered timely marriage - before this early marriage and after this late marriage. For boys there used to be additional considerations of family responsibilites like marriage of sisters or brothers and sometimes supplementing the income of father or family in a joint family which delays marriage. Therefore if a boy is married before 28 years it is timely, beyond that it is late marriage. Though child marriages are declining, many parents do not consult an astrologer and still follow their traditions. We therefore have to keep in mind Desh, Kaal, Patr (i&T, "^TH, TO) before giving predictions. The social background is essential for it. The compatibility criterion has also changed on the basis of education, levels of jobs, nature of job in urban areas. Astrology, may be one of the factors for delay in marriage. Shankaracharya Shri Chandra Shekhar Saraswatiji did not allow tallying of horoscopes beyond 26 years of age and stressed on reconciliation. Accepting imperfections has been accepted

in Hindu astrology but Dosh Samya (Birar,) can also be another reason for delay in manage. Mangal Dosha ( m ) is accepted for delay but Saturn in 8th house aspcts 5th house delaying childbirth which means delay in marriage. Except in tribals or western society - child birth outside wedlock (without marriage) is not accepted. Hence Saturn in 8th house is cause of delay in marrige. In a good consideration the focus should be on Venus, the significater of marriage. Afflicted or between two maleifics it can be a reason for delay or unhappy sensual enjoyment. Together with economic reasons there are some sociological and psychological reasons. Young boys and girls are very ambitious, sometimes overambitious about their spouse's financial and social status. This kind of rejection of match of educated families in the initial years, results in delay of marriage. Dowry is another factor for delay. In middle class educated families, marraiges are delayed sometimes, because of their inability to provide dowry, demanded exhorbitantly by boy's family. Sometimes, it is the otherway, when boys and girls want well educated spouse but parents prefer dowry which eventually results in delay. Excessive interference by parents (mostly by mothers) delays marraige. One of the most important reasons is lack of adjustment among girls to adjust to boy's family. They want everything according to their choice. Tolerance is also reducing. Refusal to live with boy's parents which used to be the tradition - compels parents to find a boy living alone, resulting in delay.

Explaining The Research

The late M.S. Sitaramiah used to follow a point system in timing the marriages of boys and girls. Adopting and elaborating his approach in this research, we are giving some additional points. To understand his scheme first look at the modified scheme of the point system. Examine the following points to see if early or late marriage is indicated in a horoscope. Condition of malefic/benefic association of planets or both is to be. seen under three broad heads viz positive/negative or both before finally awarding the points, as shown below — To be seen 1 m Venus m Seventh House m Seventh Lord m Eighth House m Eighth Lord 6. Twelfth House Ell Twelfth Lord

2. If there are bendk associations with these lords, it is good and promotes early marriage. 3. But the most important factor is the right dasha and antardasha for marriage along with the favourable transits of Jupiter and Saturn. 4. Special rules given at the end must be applied invariably. Observations f. If some planets like the lagna lord, eighth lord, seventh and tenth lord have or are of same degrees, they seem to have some effect on some area of marriage. 2. Retrograde Venus and/or Mercury associated with RKA/Mars seem to have some effect on some area of marriage. 3. Venus in malefic durudhara or in nirbeej rashi ( Mithuna, Simha, Kanya). Some people also take Vrlschika. 4. Calculate Mandi and Dhoom and see their association with marriage related houses particularly the seventh house and seventh lord. 5. Malefics in the seventh house and any planet in the ninth house. 6. Exchanges of fifth and seventh lords or/and seventh and ninth lords without the aspect of Jupiter.

In many cases it is observed that there are afflictions to 5th house, 5th lord or Karak Jupiter is delaying the in child birth which in turn becomes a major factor for delay In marriage. Jup-Sat combination or Jup-Mars combination is found in many horoscopes as delaying factor. When persons come and ask about the marriage of their daughters it is observed that some times delay is good for future married life - the bad or critical period for marital happines, passes before marriage, which otherwise would have resulted In traumatic discord.

For an initial examination of the problem of delayed marriages, let us seek answer to the following observations given by Dr.(Mrs.) Shri Rama Mishra. Causes for delay 1. Appendix - I Gender battle is joined Anuradha Dutt Perhaps the battle of the sexes has intensified in recent times. Or •perhaps the institution of marriage is in danger of crumbling. For, the proliferation in legislation, proposed and implemented with regard to granting women protection from men and in-laws, within and outside marriage, suggests that gender relations are at the nadir. So, while obsession with the game of love and sex peaks in popular culture, in the legal sphere the focus is increasingly on evolving safeguards for females' rights over life and dignity, property and children, to the exclusion of men. Already in existence are laws such as the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and its amendment, Indian Evidence Act, Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, and provisions under the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code. These are invoked in cases of suspected dowry deaths, and harassment and marital violence, often resulting in suicide. But they are often unfairly deployed against husbands and in-laws with intent to extort money and property, by unscrupulous wives and their natal families. A Delhi high court judge noted a couple of years ago that the anti-dowry provisions of the IPC were being misused. Angry women activists condemned the observation as a "reflection of the judiciary's male chauvinistic attitude". Nor did they condone the judge's advice that dowry offences be made bailable. Yet, if the custom of giving dowry stili prevails, it is on account of women's complicity. If a lone Nisha Sharma voluntarily opted out of marriage just before solemnisation of the nuptial oath because the groom's family suddenly foisted dowry demands on her father, there are countless others who willingly accede to such blackmail and abet harassment of their own sex. Further gender-related legislation is currently on the anvil, including a law to grant the co-wife/mistress property and other rights. On Monday, the Government introduced the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Bill, 2005 in the Lok Sabha even as the UPA convened a debate on the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill. Last Tuesday, the Rajya Sabha passed the amendment to the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, which grahts Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Buddhist women rights, equal to sons, in ancestral property. Earlier, the act gave them such a right to father's self-made property. 74

The amendment will now also subject them to liabilities and discharge of debts, mortgages, etc., in equal measure. The ramifications of the act might stir up a hornet's nest, with daughters claiming both dowry and their share in ancestral legacy after marriage, on the instigation of spouse and in-laws. The outcome would be protracted legal battles and family feuds. This might eventually result in the denial of one of the two options for acquiring material assets, or, as some fear, weigh against the birth of female progeny. The growing incidence of female foeticide/infanticide is already blamed to the resistance in patriarchal societies against division of property as well as the custom of dowiy. The practice is now bound to receive an impetus, the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention) of Misuse Act, 1994, having so far failed to counter the bias against female offspring. As for the two new laws under consideration, the bill against domestic violence has a wider ambit than earlier legislation in that it concerns wives as well as sisters, mothers, widows, or single women living with the abuser who, presumably, is/are male. This civil law entitles women to a magisterial order, restraining the abuser from harassing them while permitting them residence in the same house. A mother also gets temporary custody of her children. The title to property is not covered by this law. But, it is also open to misuse by vengeful female kin through clever use of lacunae and pliant accomplices. Provisos that allow for protection officers and NGOs to help the aggrieved party in getting medical and legal aid need to be made abuse-proof. The bill proposing one-third reservation for women in legislatures seems fundamentally unsound on three counts. One, in India's predominantly patriarchal milieu, men will rule by proxy via their female kin. This would negate the idea of true women's representation. Two, the very concept of a quota hinging on gender accentuates the battle between the sexes. And, three, the move is bound to trigger demands to fragment the proposed quota further on caste and religious lines. Existing gender-related laws already tend to pit women against men, with the latter seen as predators even if the truth is otherwise. Appendix - 2 Observations Observations by Shalini Dhasmana 1. Exaltation or debilitation of Important planets like Venus, Jupiter or seventh lord should be given 3 positive or 3 negative points. 2. Moon-Saturn, Moon-Venus, Saturn-Jupiter, Mars-Jupiter or SunSaturn combinations or P£C should be considered negative from the point of marriage and be given 3 negative points only. 3. Subh or Papkartari should be given 3 positive or 3 negative points. 4. An important planet like Jupiter or Venus going into the 8th house should get 3 negative points. Where 8th house is concerned, it will get 3 positive points due to placement of these benefic planets. 5. Exalted yogakarka Mars producing Mangal Dosha anywhere in the horoscope except in the 8th house, does not get 3 negative points. 6. Rashi parivartan in relevant houses should be given 3 positive or 3 negative points. 7. Debilitated retrograde Jupiter or Venus and his aspect may not deserve 3 positive points because he may not be able to provide adequate protection. 8. Specific affliction like gandant, eclipse or mrityubhag may be also considered for points. Observations by Dr.(Mrs.) Shri Rama Mishra 1. It is observed that the negative effect of Mars is reduced if it is Yogakaraka or exalted in 7th house. 2. In Jupiter-Saturn combination the protection of Jupiter is reduced, if Jupiter is debilitated or retrograde its protection becomes week. 3. Mars or Rahu in 8th house creates hurdle in marriage. 4. 12th house from Venus be seen very carefully because affliction to it results in delaying marital happiness. 5. Sometimes 10th house affliction results in delay of marital hapiness - delaying marriage. 6. 4th hosue from Venus if afflicted, delays marriage. 7. Affliction to 3rd house, 7th house, and 11 th house (kama trikona) delays marriage. Same is true if Jamini, Libra and Acquarious sign are afflicted. Observations by Dr.(Mrs.) Sarla Prasad 1.
