Performance Notes •
Composer Willard Robison (1894-1968) was best known for writing rural, melancholy songs with a feeling of Americana. In the 1920s Robison organized the Deep River Orchestra, which performed and recorded music with him at the piano. Many of his compositions, such as Old Folks and A Cottage for Sale, have become jazz standards . For over 40 years Dave Briner has arranged extensively for both men's and women's voices. Dave specializes in writing arrangements that avoid unnecessary complexities, putting them within reach of the average singer. Nonetheless, his creative charts have also been sung by top quartets and choruses of both genders. As of this writing over 150 of his arrangements are available through the Barbershop Harmony Society. Originally sung by a stellar octet made up of the 1990 Sweet Adeline International quartet champion Panache and 1990 Barbershop Harmony Society Champion Acoustix, If There's Anybody Here (From Out of Town) is a fine song choice for collaborations. Dave's arrangement is very singable, and the effect of women singing, men singing and then both performing together makes for a most pleasing sound. Perform this piece with a steady, bouncy tempo. Since the men have the faster rhythms, be careful that the song doesn't begin too quickly. Balance can be especially tricky on the last few phrases. Be sure the women sing with a lighter quality on the last two jazzy chords while the men remain strong. If your group needs to revoice the last chord down for the women to achieve this effect, feel free to do so.
