1. Sayu Kuridashi Gata (a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step (forward or back) and pivot while sliding the hanbo through the hands to strike around at the opponent with the extended end. Strike 8 ways: high, middle, middle, low, straight down at the head and straight up at the groin. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) KASUMI UCHI (punch defence & striking) • •

Against a right punch. Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back and around while blocking with the right end of the hanbo. Opponent continues by stepping in with left punch. Defender steps to left side and pivots pivots while releasing releasing left left grip to strike out (onehanded) at opponent’s head.
KOSHI ORI (punch defence & limb control) • •

Against a right punch. Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) steps to the right side (internally) and pivots while striking into the ribs with the left end of the hanbo (one-handed) and catching the punching punching arm with his his left hand, then quickly quickly crossing the hanbo hanbo over and on top of the captured arm, a rm, the opponent will be forced backward and down to the ground. Defender then pressures captured arm across own knee and/or strikes with the hanbo.
2. Sayu Uchiage Gata (a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae)

AGAINST A RIGHT-HAND KNIFE THRUST •
Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back 45 degrees while striking under and up into the attacking hand with the left end of the hanbo, then turns the hanbo over in the left hand into into a two-hand sword grip to strike down on the knife knife arm. F.A.D.
3. Sayu Hanten Uchi Gata (a two-hand technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step to the side while turning turning the stick over in one hand into a two- hand sword grip to strike down at the target with the extended end. THEN EXERCISE THE FOLLOWING DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN •
With your your partner striking straight straight down at the head, evade to the left side and release the left hand grip to strike st rike up into the opponent’s hands, then quickly step in with the right foot and take the hanbo down and and around to strike across the opponent’s chest area with a 2-hand sword grip. Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) steps to the left side (externally) and pivots while striking into the ribs with the right end of the hanbo (one-handed) and catching the knife arm with his right hand, then quickly crossing the hanbo over and on top of the captured arm, the opponent will be forced forward and down to ground. KICK DEFENCE •
Against a kick, defender (Hirai Ichimonji) evades to the inside while catching the attacking leg with the left end of the hanbo, then steps in and throws the opponent over and down to strike by extending the hanbo in one hand. F.A.D.
5. Sayu Mawashi Uchi Gata (a one-handed technique from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THIS INTRODUCTION Step diagonally forward while twisting and releasing the hanbo in one hand to strike over and down at opponent’s head with an extended one-hand grip. THEN EXERCISE THESE DEFENCES (2 + 2 times right & left) AGAINST A BOKKEN •
Against a thrust to the body, step diagonally back while striking down at bokken woth a two-hand deflection, deflection, then quickly move into the opponent to strike over and down at the head with the inside hand. F.A.D.
AGAINST A KICK •
Defender (Hirai Ichimonji) pivots back and around while twisting and releasing the hanbo to strike down on the attacking attac king leg, with an extended extended one-hand strike, then move in with with a two-hand two- hand thrust. F.A.D.

AGAINST A DOUBLE LAPEL GRAB •
Against a double lapel grab, defender (Hirai Ichimonji) thrusts the end of the hanbo up under the opponent’s chin, then raises the hanbo up into both wrists to break the opponent’s grip, then step forward and push the hanbo against against the opponent’s chest to knock him back and away.
7. Morote Shiho Uke Gata (two-hand blocking techniques from Hirai Ichimonji No Kamae) BRIEFLY EXERCISE THESE INTRODUCTIONS 1. 10. Grabbing Defence KATATE DORI - GRAB DEFENCE •

Opponent steps forward and grabs defender’s right wrist with left hand (defender (defender in Hira Ichimonji No Kamae). Defender immediately positions the right end of the hanbo on top of the opponent’s wrist. Opponent then steps in with left punch at head Defender steps diagonally back, while blocking/striking up into punching arm with the left end of the hanbo, then feeling the opponent’s grip release, the defender quickly changes feet to step in with the right foot and strike in the ribs with the right end of the weapon.
BEAR-HUG DEFENCE •
Against Against a bear hug, pressure across opponent’s hands, stomp, then drop and raise both arms, then quickly quickly release (one grip on the hanbo)and hanbo)and move move around beside beside opponent while positioning hanbo across ribs to apply pressure. Then drop to a half-kneel half-kneel and throw opponent over and down to t o the ground.
MAWASHI DORI - GRAB & PUNCH DEFENCE • •

Variation •
This defence and counter-attack can be performed (with reverse angling) by first blocking blocking the punches punches EXTERNALLY, EXTERNALLY, then thrusting into chest area.

Tori:
