Some of the participating universities will only communicate with applicants via email. Admission policies Offers

Successful applicants will be given a firm date by which to accept an offer of a place and offers not accepted according to the school’s instructions by that date will lapse.

If an applicant declines an offer of a place, they will not be considered for another place or receive another offer.

Deferral

Deferral of a place is unlikely. However, some universities permit deferral, particularly to complete an Honours year. Please consult the schools’ websites or discuss the possibility of being permitted to defer with the universities to which you wish to apply.

Exclusion

An applicant who has been excluded from any university must indicate this when they apply. The schools may contact applicants for further detail, on receipt of the application data.

Admission irregularities

Applicants should be aware that the presentation of forged documents is a criminal offence in Australia and that universities may take appropriate action action against such such cases. For the purpose of university admission, admission, the withholding of information and the submission of incorrect or misleading information are deemed fraudulent. Action taken in such cases may include cancellation of an application for admission, of an offer of admission, or of an enrolment.

Schools’ policies

Each University may have its own additional admission policies (which may include policies on prior or current studies, enrolment irregularities and/or transfers). To confirm if there are additional policies, review each school’s entry in this Guide and the websites of the schools to which you intend to apply.

If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT Consortium courses as soon as possible.

Application Process Information in this section is generally common to all the schools, but is subject to the specific requirements outlined in the school entries and on the school websites. GEMSAS and the schools make every effort to ensure the accuracy of information provided in this Admission Guide at the time of publication. However, applicants must consult the university websites for more detailed and specific information and for updates.

There are three components of the application process: 

GAMSAT (www.gamsat.acer.edu.au)

All applicants for Commonwealth Supported Places and other domestic places at graduate-entry schools (i.e. citizens/permanent residents of Australia and citizens of New Zealand) must have a current score on the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT). GAMSAT results are valid for two years: i.e. if you sat the test in 2012 you may use the results obtained to apply for a graduate entry course commencing in 2013 and/or 2014. As such, GAMSAT 2011 results are also valid for use in applications to courses commencing in 2013. Your GAMSAT results show a score for each of the three test Sections and an Overall Score. The UK and Ireland GAMSAT scores are valid for application in the year following the test. There is a very helpful table on the GAMSAT website that shows the validity of all the GAMSAT tests. http://gamsat.acer.edu.au/results/validity-of-results/ All GAMSAT Consortium medical schools (except The University of Melbourne) rank applicants using the Overall GAMSAT Score (with required minimum Section scores normally around 50). The University of Melbourne uses an average GAMSAT Score. The acceptable GAMSAT scores may be different for each of the universities, and may vary from year to year. When deciding whether or not to submit an application, you are advised to make sure that your GAMSAT scores fall within the acceptable ranges reported in the individual university entries in this Guide. You can evaluate your standing in relation to other candidates who sat GAMSAT in the same year as you did, by consulting the chart included with your Statement of Results. Please note that neither GEMSAS nor ACER staff have the authority to review individual transcripts or GAMSAT results or to offer advice on the likelihood of selection. Registration for the GAMSAT and application for admission to the graduate p rograms are separate processes.



Application

GAMSAT candidates are responsible for determining their eligibility to apply. Applicants are selected for interview based on one or more of the following criteria: 

performance in GAMSAT;



performance in a qualifying degree (as indicated by GPA);

performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or autobiographical statement.

The Australian National University, Deakin University, The University of Melbourne and The University of Western Australia combine the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview. Griffith University1 and Monash University use the GPA as a hurdle requirement and rank applicants based on GAMSAT results. The University of Queensland uses the GPA as a hurdle, then ranks applicants by GAMSAT results using the GPA as a tie-breaker where necessary. Flinders University ranks applicants primarily on the basis of GAMSAT results, although applicants with outstanding GPAs may be given special consideration. The University of Wollongong, The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Fremantle) and The University of Notre Dame, Australia (Sydney) rank applicants on combined GPA, GAMSAT results and portfolio/written submission.



When you complete your Application Form, you will be presented with a checklist which you must print and attach as directed to the documents you are submitting. Bachelor degree All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of a Bachelor or Honours degree. Undergraduate Australian degrees must be from a Commonwealth accredited institution (see http://www.teqsa.gov.au/nationalregister). (Note that undergraduate degrees include Bachelor and Honours degree). Overseas degrees must be recognised by the National office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR) as equivalent to an Australian Bachelors degree. Please see https://www.aei.gov.au for more information. For those in the final year of study, satisfactory completion of the degree in 2012 will be a condition of entry. Note that if you cannot complete and provide evidence of completion of your degree in the 2012 calendar year, any offer you have received that is conditional upon completion of your current degree may be withdrawn. Applicants enrolled in a two-year degree or one-year conversion degree or those who have completed a higher degree without a prior Bachelor degree should consult their preferred school/s to ascertain eligibility. Note that not all schools accept such degrees. Please see individual school entries. Applicants who have completed a higher degree without a prior Bachelor degree should consult their preferred school/s to ascertain eligibility.

Grade Point Average (GPA) GEMSAS will calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) from electronic copies of academic transcripts or paper transcripts if you have completed any part of your qualifying degree at an overseas university or any university not included in the list of ARTS institutions in Appendix A. Applicants may wish to calculate their GPA using the GPA calculator and/or according to the instructions on the GEMSAS website (www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations). Applicants whose degrees were completed outside Australia and New Zealand will not be able to calculate a GPA for themselves. Please note that any GPA calculated by an applicant will be an estimated GPA and used only for the information of the applicant. No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. The GAMSAT Consortium encourages individuals from diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests. Exception: Applicants to Medicine at the University of The University of Melbourne must have completed approved

prerequisite second year level studies in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. The GPA indicates the level of performance in the qualifying degree. There is no differentiation of GPA between institutions or courses. It should be emphasised that a science major is not a prerequisite, and that academic excellence in other areas, such as the humanities and social sciences, is encouraged and recognised.

Interviews No domestic applicant will receive more than one interview offer from a medical school participating in GEMSAS in 3

the 2012 admissions round, for entry in 2013 . The interview is designed to assess qualities considered by the schools to be associated with success in both medical school and later practice, and is conducted by trained interviewers. Academic performance is not discussed at the interview.

Selected applicants receive an invitation to interview by letter or email (except for invitations to Flinders University’ interviews which are made online via the school’s website). This invitation must be presented on arrival at the

medical school, together with a valid passport or current photo-bearing driver’s licence for identification purposes. Some schools require that you supply a passport photograph prior to interview. If this applies to you, you will be notified when interview invitations are issued, with instructions on how and when to submit your digital photo. Applicants must meet all expenses associated with attending the interview. Exception: The University of Queensland does not interview applicants for the graduate entry program.

Applicants unsuccessful in receiving an interview at any of the medical schools they applied to will be notified by email by the GEMSAS team.

Apart from the possibility of receiving an offer from the University of Queensland,

applicants who were not interviewed will not participate in further processing.

School Briefing Apologies – we got a little ahead of ourselves. This is something we are investigating implementing in 2013 for 2014 entry to medical schools.

Offers Selection into graduate-entry medicine is based on up to four criteria:  

performance in GAMSAT; performance in the qualifying degree (as indicated by GPA). Please see school entries for details about GPA calculations;



performance in interview (except The University of Queensland);



performance in a portfolio, special application or supplementary form or autobiographical statement.

The way in which each university combines these criteria when making their final offers varies. For more information refer to the individual university entries which begin on page 22 of this Guide. Alternatively you can consult each university’s website for detailed information. Links are available from www.gemsas.edu.au. A successful application may lead to an offer of one of a range of places, including bonded and full-fee places. When you apply you will be asked (for each school on your preference list), to list and rank the types of places you will be prepared to accept. Selection is based on ranked lists and quotas. To maximise your chances of receiving an offer at the schools of your choice, consider listing all types of places. If you omit (for instance) the BMP offer type and you are ranked to get a BMP offer, it will not be made and you’ll drop down to your next preferred school for consideration. Please read carefully all the information about bonded places on the DoHA website at www.health.gov.au/bmpschemeand www.health.gov.au/MRBScholarships. When allocations are being made, schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using that school’s ranked list in order: MRBS, CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). (Note that the University of Melbourne uses the order CSP, BMP, MRBS and FEE). If you only list CSP, this means you will effectively exclude yourself from consideration for at least 25% of places and will therefore need to be ranked in at least the top 75% of applicants to be successful.

If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive another offer. If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT Consortium courses as soon as possible.

Quotas Each university has a quota for the year’s intake of Australian citizens/permanent residents and New Zealand

citizens. This includes Commonwealth supported non-bonded places (CSP) and Commonwealth supported bonded places (MRBS and BMP) as well as Australian full fee places. Most schools are obliged to fill at least 25% of all Commonwealth Supported Places with students from a rural background. Rural background sub-quotas can be filled from a combination of offer types and are not restricted to only bonded places. Quotas for 2013 are expected to be:

Rurality If you have lived in a rural area (ASGC-RA 2 to 5) you may be eligible for consideration in rural schemes and subquotas. You will need to complete the Rurality question in the Application Form and submit supporting documentation. For information about rural sub quotas or bonus points please view the schools' entry requirements pages. The ASGC-RA is a geographical classification tool developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2006. The purpose of the RA structure is to classify data from census Collection Districts (CDs) into broad geographical categories, called Remoteness Areas (RAs). The RA categories are defined in terms of ‘remoteness’ – the physical

distance of a location from the nearest urban centre based on population size. Under this classification system remoteness is updated each census. The Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) will use these guidelines in the processing of Rurality Claims. The ASGC-RA system is made up of 5 categories: 

If you have lived in an ASGC-RA 2 to 5 area, for 5 years (consecutively or cumulatively) since the commencement of primary school, and wish to be considered for rural schemes and sub-quotas, you will need to provide documentary evidence. FAQs about the application process How do I choose between two valid GAMSAT results?

You will have two valid GAMSAT results if you sat the Australian GAMSAT6 in 2011 and 2012. You are advised to compare both results against the acceptable scores for each university and then select the result you wish the universities to consider. Simply record in the Application Form the appropriate candidate identification number, country and year of sitting for the test you wish to use for selection. This will be the only GAMSAT result that will be provided to GEMSAS. It is not possible to mix individual Section scores from different years. Which school should I apply to?

There are eleven Medical schools in the GAMSAT Consortium. Domestic applicants may nominate up to six preferences. There are significant differences in entry requirements between the schools. You might find that you have a much better chance of gaining admission to one school over another. Please ensure you make your selections with care. Once preferences are entered you will not be able to change them. Subsequent transfers between Schools are unlikely. If you are not prepared to undertake the course at a particular university you should not list it. You are strongly advised to obtain detailed information from the schools’ websites to ensure you are fully informed

on both the admissions criteria and the structure of the individual programs. If you are offered a place and you decline it, then your application will be withdrawn from further processing and you will NOT receive another offer. My degree is more than 10 years old, am I still eligible to apply?

Bachelor degrees that were awarded more than 10 years prior to the anticipated commencement date may not be acceptable at the school to which you are applying. To confirm whether your degree will be recognised, check the relevant schools’ entries in this Guide and their websites and contact the schools if you are still in doubt. I’ve done a postgraduate degree, do I calculate my GPA on that or on my Bachelor?

In general, postgraduate qualifications such as Masters, PhDs, or postgraduate diplomas, are not included in GPA calculations and selection is based on the performance in the most recent Bachelor degree only, including an Honours year if applicable. However, because schools do have different rules surrounding the use of these qualifications you should contact your preferred schools directly for advice. Some exceptions: Masters and PhDs results are included in GPA calculations for admission to the University of

Queensland. For The University of Western Australia, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework are included in a 3-year GPA calculation. It is also proposed that completed PhD study be used for the GPA calculation.

Griffith University will consider applications based on Honours, Masters and PhDs to meet their minimum GPA requirement. In these instances the GPA from the undergraduate degree will not be considered unless it would advantage the applicant to do so.

What happens to my application?

GEMSAS is a computerised matching system which calculates GPAs and bonuses; assesses applications for eligibility; and uses an algorithm to rank and allocate eligible applicants to their highest preferenced medical school. For more details about the matching algorithm, please refer to www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes. Applications will be assessed according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. GEMSAS will assess the eligibility and competitiveness of all applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is not eligible or not ranked highly enough he or she will be assessed for the second preference school and so on until the applicant has either been allocated an interview at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted. Applicants not interviewed will subsequently only be considered to fill possible vacancies at the University of Queensland. Applications will be assessed again after interviews according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. Interview scores will be standardised and used by all participating schools (except the University of Queensland). GEMSAS will assess the competitiveness of all interviewed applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is not ranked highly enough he or she will be assessed for the second preference school and so on until the applicant has either been offered a place at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted. You cannot be considered for an offer at a school which is a higher preference than the school at which you were interviewed. They have already decided you don't meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough to get an interview offer and that can't change in the subsequent offer round despite how well you do at interview.

If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive another offer.

If you do not receive an offer of a place in the main round of offers after interview, your application will remain in the system. Additional offers may be made during December and January after final results of applicants completing their qualifying degree are known. It is NOT possible for applicants to change their preferences after the application closing date.

What happens to my application after interview?

If you are not made an offer by the School at which you were interviewed, your application will remain in the system and will automatically be considered by your lower preference schools (at which you are eligible for consideration) or by the School at which you were interviewed (for a later offer) until you are either offered a place or all preferences have been exhausted. If you are interviewed by your final preference school, your application cannot be considered by any lower preference school.

What happens if I am also applying for courses outside the GAMSAT Consortium medicine course?

There are many applicants for medical school places who will not be offered an interview or a place. If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GAMSAT Consortium courses as soon as possible. I’m still studying this year; do I need to submit a 2012 transcript?

Applicants completing their degree in 2012 will be assessed on the basis of the information available at the time of application. Semester 1 (or Trimester 1), 2012 results will be included in the assessment for interview if they are available at the time of assessment. If your results are from an ARTS university, your semester 1, 2012 results will be electronically retrieved. For study at a non-ARTS university in semester 1, 2012, please supply an original transcript as soon as possible to the GEMSAS PO Box. Applicants completing their degree in 2012 will only be offered an interview if their GPA at the time of application or with 2012 results to date meets the required level. Such applicants should also note that while decisions on interview offers will be made on the basis of results available at the time of application, final 2012 results may be used to determine offers of a place. Refer to each school’s entry in this Guide fo r more information.

How do I know if my supporting documents have arrived?

It is strongly recommended that you use a postal service which provides a tracking mechanism (Registered Post, Express Post, courier, etc), so that you can be certain your supporting documents have arrived at GEMSAS. You may wish to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your supporting documents. This will be returned to you when your documents are processed as confirmation that they have been received. You cannot phone GEMSAS to confirm whether your envelope has arrived. If you have no other way of tracking your supporting documents, and did not include a stamped, self-addressed envelope, you may email GEMSAS with your full name, application number and the date you posted your documents. As soon as it is possible to confirm the arrival of your documents, we will do so.

Currency of qualification

Applicants who have completed their Bachelor degree more than 10 years previously will only be considered if there is evidence of continuing tertiary level academic study in the intervening period. Bonuses

A percentage bonus is applied to the combined weighted GPA and Overall GAMSAT score for completed postgraduate study above the level of Graduate Diploma.

GAMSAT

Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 50 in all Sections of GAMSAT to be considered. Applicants with a GAMSAT Overall Score of less than 55 are unlikely to be ranked highly enough to be offered an interview.

Interview

The decision of whether an applicant will be asked for interview is determined by ranking each applicant using their GAMSAT Overall Score and weighted GPA, which are weighted 50:50. A final rank order is obtained after adding a small bonus for one of the following completed degrees, if applicable: Graduate Diploma, Masters or PhD. Interviews for domestic applicants will be conducted in late September in Canberra. Interviews will be semi-structured and include multi-stations.

Offers will be based on a final ranking using a 50: 50 combination of the interview score and the composite score, previously used for ranking students for an interview offer.

To qualify for a bonus for rural/regional residency, applicants must have lived or studied for at least 5 years (consecutive or cumulative) after commencing primary school in a place classified by the Australian Standard Geographic Classification – Remote Areas (ASGC-RA) system as level 2-5. The bonus is also given to applicants who have lived or studied in the City of Greater Geelong for at least 5 years (consecutive or cumulative) after commencing primary school. 

Interview

Approximately 200 applicants will be interviewed. Interviews will be held in Geelong during late September 2012. Interviewees will be selected based on GAMSAT and weighted GPA (50:50).The ranking for interview will include additional bonus points for:   

Relevant prior clinical experience (2%); Rural/Regional residency (ASGC-RA 2 to 5) (2% - 4%); Demonstration of financial disadvantage during undergraduate degree (2%).

Interviews will use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format in which applicants are interviewed at up to 10 consecutive stations with 5 minutes for each interaction. Qualities to be assessed at interview include communication skills, professionalism, social awareness, ethical behaviour, and commitment to rural and regional practice. Offers

The final ranked list, from which offers will be progressively made, is based on an entry score calculation which gives equal weighting to GPA, GAMSAT and Interview. Additional bonus points, previously listed, will be included in this calculation. Offers will be made during November 2012 –January 2013. Offers for applicants in the final year of their degree will be provisional. Please note that deferrals are not permitted.


International applicants may apply with GAMSAT or MCAT scores. The minimum GAMSAT score is at least 50 in each Section and a score of at least 50 overall. The minimum MCAT score is 8/8/M/8. Flinders does not set a minimum GPA, but weighted GPA is a significant component in ranking applicants (after interview) for offers, and a Distinction/Credit or B average is generally needed to be competitive. The three GPAs are weighted x1, x2 and x3 so that the most recent results contribute most to the weighted GPA used in ranking.

Minimum Section scores and an Overall cut-off score for interview are determined by the Admissions Committee annually. Normally the minimum Section scores are 50 in Sections I and III and about 46 in Section II. For applicants who achieve the minimum Section scores, the GAMSAT Overall Score required for interviews has ranged from 61-64 in recent years. Applicants with slightly lower Overall Scores may be offered interviews in the special entry to interview scheme (on the basis of an outstanding GPA). For applicants in special groups or sub-quotas (e.g. Indigenous, Rural, Riverland Rural-Parallel Rural Community Curriculum (PRCC), Northern Territory) where additional criteria may apply, cut-offs for interview may vary.

Interview

Interview offers will be made to about 175 domestic applicants for places in Adelaide and about 24 applicants for places in Darwin. Applicants shortlisted for the Riverland Rural (PRCC) sub-quota will be interviewed in the Riverland as well as in Adelaide. Interview offers will be made online only via the School’s website. Interviews will be held on specified days in late September. Applicants selected for interview for the places in the Northern Territory will be interviewed in Darwin. Interviews are in semi-structured format and conducted by a panel of trained interviewers. Qualities assessed include communication skills, quality of motivation, decision-making, learning style and team skills, personal management and self-evaluation skills, and pro-social attitude.

Offers

After interview, applicants are ranked by combining scores (on a scale of 0-100) calculated from GAMSAT Overall Score, weighted GPA and interview score. These three components are weighted equally in determining an Entry Score for ranking. During the admissions process, applicants are asked to nominate the categories of medical school place for which they are eligible and for which they wish to be considered, in order of preference. The preferences given by each applicant will guide the offer process as the Admissions Committee works through the ranked list of applicants. Subject to approval, offers of admission will be made on the basis of results available at the time of interview and for those applicants with incomplete degrees, will be subject to degree completion. If all of your study has been completed at an ARTS participating university (see Appendix A), you do not need to provide an academic transcript of your results. If any of your study was completed at a non-ARTS participating university (see Appendix A), you will need to submit an original academic transcript for that component. For an entire degree completed at a non-ARTS university, you will need to submit a transcript detailing all results and completion of your degree. GAMSAT

Griffith University determines the standard annually, but would normally expect applicants to achieve a minimum score of 50 in each Section. The Overall Score required to secure an offer to interview is also determined annually, but is expected to be in the mid 60’s. The number of interviews is based on a ratio of approximately 1.5 interviews for each quota place.

Interview

Applicants who meet the minimum GPA requirement are selected for interview based on GAMSAT Overall Score. The interview or Griffith University Multiple Station Admissions Assessment (GUMSAA) is designed to assess personal qualities deemed desirable in medical students and medical practitioners and will take the form of scenario based, multi-station interviews. GUMSAA for 2013 entry is scheduled to be held on Wednesday September 19th, 201 2. Rural entry

For 2013 entry to the UQ MBBS Program the University will offer approximately 60 places for students from a rural background through standard selection policies and procedures Students will be eligible for consideration in the Rural Background Students (RBS) sub quota if they have spent at least 5 years living in a rural Australian area as determined by the ASGC-RA (Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remoteness Area) system. If you wish to be considered through this scheme you will need to provide documentary evidence to GEMSAS as detailed on page 15 and the GEMSAS website.

Interview

UQ no longer interviews applicants for the graduate program.

Offers

QTAC will be processing all applications and releasing the major offer round in August 2012. (NB: 50 places will be to study at UQ’s Ipswich campus).

Deferrals

UQ allows the deferral of an offer for one year. Automatic approval is given for students wanting to undertake an Honours year or to complete non-degree requirements for the purpose of obtaining professional registration related to the current Bachelor degree. All other reasons must be requested in writing and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Executive Dean.

Failure to Enrol

An offer of a place is only available in that year’s intake. An applicant who accepts an offer but does not enrol must reapply to undertake the program in a subsequent year.


International applicants must apply directly to the University of Queensland and not through GEMSAS. International students may apply with either GAMSAT or MCAT scores. Selection is based on the same criteria as for domestic applicants. Applicants with MCAT scores must have achieved minimum scores of 8/8/M/8 to be eligible. In order to be eligible for entry, applicants must have completed a recognised* bachelor degree, or will complete a recognised* bachelor degree by the end of the applicati on year. Applicants must have achieved a GPA of at least 5.5 at time of interview selection. The Faculty includes Bachelor, Honours (if already completed), Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework level of study in the GPA calculation. Applicants with postgraduate qualifications (or additional undergraduate results) should indicate this study on the application form. Additional study does not need to be completed. The GPA is not weighted. Applicants who are eligible for a course offer but are studying (at any level) in semester two, 2012 will be made a conditional offer requiring them to maintain a GPA of 5.5. Applicants who have not yet completed their initial bachelor degree will also be required to complete their bachelor degree by the end of 2012 as part of their offer conditions. UWA will accept 2-year bachelor degrees and 1-year conversion degrees for the purposes of admission to our medical course. Bonuses

Completed Masters by research qualifications are not included in the GPA calculation. Instead the Faculty will add a small bonus to the overall GPA for applicants with this qualification. GAMSAT

Applicants must reach the minimum threshold in each of the three Sections of GAMSAT (likely to be at least 50), as well as the Overall Score minimum threshold. Choose Medicine: Rural and Metropolitan Pathways

Applicants must meet eligibility requirements in order to apply for either the Rural or the Metropolitan Pathway. Applicants, who wish to apply for the Choose Medicine (Rural) Pathway, must complete the relevant questions in the application form and submit supporting documentation to GEMSAS by 29 June 2012 in order to prove their eligibility for the pathway.

Offers

Applicants are ranked by combining and equally weighting standardised scores calculated from the: GAMSAT Overall Score; GPA; and interview score. For rural applicants, a rural rating will be included in the ranking.

Deferral

As the MD does not commence until 2014, all successful applicants from the 2012 admissions cycle will in effect “defer” their offer of a place. That is, successful 2012 applicants will receive their UWA MD course offer during the normal 2012 offer period but will not commence the course until 2014. There are no restrictions placed on what

successful applicants are permitted to do during 2013. 2012 applicants who are made a 2014 UWA MD offer are able to spend 2013 any way they choose, including undertaking further study, practicums, work or travel. Credit/Exemption

As the course is postgraduate, no credit or exemptions can be granted from undergraduate courses, including graduate entry MBBS courses.


UWA will have approximately 15 places available in 2012 for 2014 entry as well as a further approximate 15 places available in 2013 for the same intake of 2014 entry. International applicants will need to apply directly to the UWA International Centre by 1 June 2012 and can find an application form at: http://www.meddent.uwa.edu.au/courses/postgraduate/apply-professional/int-stdpath/applications. Applicants may sit either GAMSAT or MCAT provided their results are available by 1 June 2012. All applicants must have a minimum GPA of 5.5. The Faculty will host an information evening for graduate applicants to the MD on Wednesday 23 May at 7.00pm in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, UWA (Crawley Campus).

Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) & Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) The University of Western Australia will admit its first applicants into the 4-year DMD and DPM courses in 2013. Selection for the DMD will be based on suitable GAMSAT (or MCAT for international applicants), a minimum GPA of 5.5 and interview. The GSM curriculum reflects the latest approach to medical education and incorporates extensive use of medical education and information technologies. The four year graduate entry programme has been designed based on the best educational evidence from medical schools around the world with innovative integrated spiral curriculum based around a case Based learning core. The GSM benefits from purpose built facilities, featuring dedicated teaching and resource space. The GSM also features Clinical Skills Centres where the students use a combination of modern technology and traditional bedside clinical teaching to develop their skills in diagnosis and management of a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Clinical exposure occurs early in the program, with students exposed to hospitals, primary care settings, community health centres and patient volunteers from their first semester of study. Students spend significant time during their training undertaking both short and long term clinical placements in many regional and rural communities. These attachments allow students to gain insight into life in regional, rural and remote communities, and appreciate the kind of medicine practiced there. Students will receive a broad based education with a focus on rural medicine, graduating with the skills and ability to practice in any geographic setting and to commence training in any specialty.


All applicants must have a weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 or above on a 7 point scale at the time of application, to be eligible to apply. The GPA score required to receive an offer for interview may fluctuate annually. This GPA will be calculated based on the most recently completed Bachelors degree (including an Honours year if applicable). Postgraduate qualifications will not be included in GPA calculations. GPA years will be progressively weighted Year 1 x1, Year 2 x2 and Year 3 x3, and then divided by 6, to give greater weight to the most recent results. Details on how the weighted GPA is calculated from the final three full-time-equivalent years (including the Honours year) are available on the GEMSAS website. UOW does not normally recognise 2 year Bachelor degrees or 1 year conversion degrees for the purpose of admission to the medical course. Please contact the school for details.

Applicants are required to have graduated from their undergraduate degree within 10 years of the closing date of applications. Applicants whose undergraduate degree was completed outside the 10 year period may still be considered for admission if they have completed the equivalent of one year’s full -time tertiary studies at Graduate Diploma level or higher at a recognised university within the last 10 years; or if they can demonstrate through other activities that they hold current high level academic skills. Bonuses

No GPA bonuses are awarded for postgraduate study, however applicants are encouraged to include these academic experiences in their portfolio as they will be viewed favourably during scoring. Rural applicants should read the sections below for further information.

GAMSAT/MCAT and Portfolio

A minimum GAMSAT Overall Score of 50 with a minimum of 50 in each of the three Sections is required to be considered for interview. The GEMSAS application form also incorporates the GSM Admissions Portfolio which must be completed by all applicants. The portfolio, application and rural residency forms should be submitted electronically directly to GEMSAS and will be used as one of the criteria to rank your eligibility for interview. This information must be submitted regardless of the UOW ranking on your preference form as applicants who fail to submit a portfolio will not be considered. The GSM Admissions Portfolio may take time to complete and it is recommended that applicants commence preparation early and submit well prior to the closing date. To assist in your preparation, a draft portfolio template will be available from the GSM website for your consideration from 30 April 2012. This is a template only to be used as a guide - only portfolios submitted in the approved format via GEMSAS will be accepted. Please note that all activities highlighted in the portfolio require a current email contact for verification. The application form and portfolio must be completed electronically via GEMSAS by 30 May 2012.


The GSM has a commitment to training Indigenous doctors and has allocated a sub-quota of three places for applicants who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. To be considered for these places, applicants must indicate their Indigenous status at the time of application. Applicants will be contacted by the GSM to supply relevant supporting documentation if required. Applicants in this category are required to reach acceptable levels of performance in portfolio, GPA, GAMSAT, and interview as determined by the school. Unfilled places in this sub-quota will be transferred to the domestic quota.

Rural applicants

The UOW GSM is committed to producing medical graduates with a focus on regional, rural and remote communities. Rural applicants do not need to apply specifically for a rural subquota as the GSM gives preference to students who can demonstrate ties to regional, rural and remote communities. The UOW GSM uses the rural residency/schooling part of the application to assess your background as far as living and studying in rural and regional areas. The information on your form is assessed and scored using the Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA). GSM will require rurality verification of your schooling and residential address details as outlined in your Admissions Portfolio. The application form and portfolio must be completed electronically by 30 May 2012.

At the time of application applicants will need to indicate their preferred campus (Wollongong or Shoalhaven) for the first 18 months of the programme. Applicants will be contacted by the GSM to supply relevant supporting documentation if required.

Interview

Applicants to UOW are ranked for interview using the overall total of their weighted GPA, GAMSAT and Portfolio scores (including rurality). Approximately 155 applicants will be invited to interview. Invitations will be sent in August. Domestic interviews are conducted by formally trained interviewers in a multi-station nd format on both the Wollongong and Shoalhaven Campuses commencing 22 September th through to 28 September 2012 (including sessions on Saturday and Sunday). Interviewees are rated on personal qualities including their communication skills, empathetic and ethical approach, reflective manner, teamwork and decision making skills.

Offers

On the completion of the interview process, candidates’ interview scores and portfolio scores are used to rank for offer. The candidates’ GPA and GAMSAT results are not included in the formula after interview. Candidates’ campus and place type preferences also have no influence on the decision for offer.

Offers are made in November with a small number of subsequent offers in December and January (if required). Offers are made for a specific status, campus and year only. Offers to UOW GSM may not be deferred. Students will need to have by the date of enrolment: documentation regarding vaccination status; completed an Australian Registered Senior First Aid Course; obtained State and Federal Government Police Clearance; and obtained a Working with Children clearance. Further details on these requirements will be made available to successful applicants.    

Offers to successful candidates completing their degree in 2012 will be conditional to their maintenance of the minimum required GPA. Documentary evidence must be produced for the offer to be ratified. International Applicants
