TEST PARA UN E XAMEN DE A RQUITECTURA
1

TEST FOR AN A RCHITECTURE E XAM
1
architecture is a very long word; can it be abbreviated?
the art of materialising dreams on a long journey 2
do arch itec ts c onst ruct arch itec ture ?
not always; sometimes we destroy it 3
what do you learn from?
from our senses, and from an intense, selective gaze 4
who do you lear n f rom?
from anybody who has allowed a work to speak for itself 5 6
does the father have to be m urde red? yes; if n ot, you cann ot d ista nce your self myths or anonymities?
they are all the same 7
reflection or empiricism?
both; they are not exclusive but rather complementary concepts 8
s ea rc h o r f in d?
Picasso said: "I do not seek; find"; but in the result of finding there is an underlying action of seeking 9
is experience transferable?
no, only apprehensible 10 the trade: is it learned by one who trains?
unfortunately yes; the mark comes from effort 11 run or wait?
not everything is attainable; you have to know your own limits, so sometimes it is better to sit down and breathe 12 how is architecture generated?
by developing an intuition 13 do 'isms' help?
only for those who like to collect and classify; otherwise they are a nuisance 14 and history?
real architecture is always objective and an expression of the internal structure of the times in which it has arisen (to quote Mies van der Rohe) 15 is the idea the starter motor?
no; it is an ingredient in a complex combination 16 what is place?
sensorial comprehension (of the senses) of space (with all its physical components) that spans our close-up view, with the back ground of our dist ant view 17 what does place have to say?
so many things; it is the key to the identification and/or personalization of the result 18 and non-place?
that is hard to understand, because it is silent or it shouts, which is all the same thing 19 is it a desert?
absolutely not; the desert speaks slowly, gently or roughly 20 is i t a subu rb?
not always; the suburb seems to shout, but actually many are shouting at the same time

C ARLOS M ARTÍ A RIS
Pabellón del Baño Bathing Pavilion River Zone, Tussols-Basil, Olot, Girona, Spain. 1998

In the collection of essays entitled Testaments betrayed , Milan Kundera speaks of 19 th century music and the tendency of many authors of the time to create ‘great compositions’ containing an amalgamation of highly diverse materials, presented as unitary. To do this, they have to rely on connections and links that interconnect the main themes or episodes using an auxiliary system that acts as a simple mortar. By this means, a strict hierarchy is introduced between the constituent parts of the ‘great composition’: on the one hand, there are the important sections, the highlights of the work; on the other, the ballast formed by transitions, those neutral sections that lack any intrinsic value and only serve as a connection between the themes. Dvorak, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and others foundered on this difficulty. Kundera opposes this type of composition, which he describes as ‘the Chopin strategy’ in honour of the obvious examples heard in his series of etudes, preludes and nocturnes. The blinding intensity of the musical theme shines with all its strength in these brief pieces by Chopin, which lack preambles and divergences— just absolute conclusion and immediacy. They are like fragments or sketches in whi ch the ess ent ial tra its of the wor k a re dra wn wit hou t h avi ng to rel y o n r eto uche s o r a ddi tio ns. Deb ussy, Jan ace k a nd Sati e a ll used the same procedure. With this strategy, the hierarchy of the parts disappears and the whole score takes on the same relief: ever ything is grain and there is no straw. It is not hard to extrapolate this observation to the field of architecture. We can see that most of the academic works in the second half of the 19 th century respond literally to the ‘great composition’ principle. Something like the ‘Chopin strategy’ appeared on the architectural scene when Wright and Loos produced their early pioneering works. It was only after the consolidation of modern architecture some of the most characteristic values of this strategy such as the intensity of the spatial experience and the rotundity of form became wide ly u sed obj ecti ves. The con cept of a rchit ectur e that em erges f rom the w ork of Ar anda/ Pige m/Vil alta re spond s perfe ctly t o the ‘ Cho pin str ategy ’ as desc ribe d by Kundera. Their work is set in the landscape with a strange mixture of nurture and power, and is manifested in explicit, regular forms. They ofte n take on dom esti c brie fs, b ut wit hout the le st con cess ion to circ umst ance or for tuit y: th e spec ific epis odes of th e brie f and u ses are diluted and enveloped in a powerful formal structure that dictates the rules of the whole unit. These are compact, brief, essential works of architecture, in which nothing is indispensable. As s een most clea rly in t heir hous es a nd p avil ion s, A rand a/Pi gem/ Vila lta sens e an appr eci atio n fo r sm all- size piec es. Howe ver, t hank s to the determination and clarity with which they tackle formal issues, their works make an unequivocal reference to the idea of the monument, given that monumentality has nothing to do with size, as artists of the calibre of Jorge Oteiza, Max Bill and Donald Judd have shown, but rather to the recognizability and the meaning of the form. Thi s c omp ati bil ity of smal lne ss and mon ume nta lit y a lso led me to thi nk of wor ks tha t are far awa y f rom our tim e and cul ture , yet do not seem unrelated to the sensibility of these three architects. I am thinking of certain Visigoth and Mozarabic constructions like the Aula Regia of Santa María del Naranco in Asturias, the San Juan de Baños Church in Palencia and the San Baudel de Berlanga Hermitage in Soria. In these works, modest size is coupled to a deep undercurrent of ideality and a strict desire to produce the perfect form. I should add that this comparison, which somebody may consider unappreciative, is to my mind the greatest compliment that can be given to a wor k o f a rch ite ctu re.

Olot, the place where these three architects live and work, is a small town in northern Catalonia with a stunning landscape. Set in an area that underwent intense volcanic activity long ago, Olot owes its urban shape to the topographic conditions imposed by the surrounding volc anic cone s an d th e Fl uvià Rive r th at f lows acro ss t he p lain betw een them . The lin k b etwe en Olot and its terr itor y is unus uall y i nten se: an art icul ated syst em of fore sts, path s a nd spri ngs prol ong the town and dissolves it into a landscape with a rich relief, exuberant vegetation and the intense colours of the earth. There is nothing strange in the fact that Olot was the birthplace of a school of painters that arose in the second half of the 19 th century, which has been compared to the Barbizon landscape school. Nor is it surprising that, having studied in this environment, Aranda/Pigem/Vilalta have developed a special sensitivity to the interpretation of relationships between architecture and nature. In a cultural context like Olot, wh ich looks back on its tradition with pr ide and into the future with caution, b y-law restrictions or even self-censorship could easily hamper an architect’s imagination. This is not the case. They conceive the relationship between culture and nature as a veritable int er par es dialogue in which human labour should seek a broad agreement with the world, offered as data, but operating without servility or camouflage; in other words, accepting the presence of architecture as a positive force. This has always been the attitude of the great architecture of the past, which has striven to achieve no less than the transformation of a place to make it propitious for life. The work s of Aran da/P igem /Vil alt a in the Olot area all resp ond to t his crit erio n: t hey stan d out shar ply in t he l ands cape and e stab lish a counterpoint type of relationship with it. They are like crystallisations of the geology: they arise from the ground but lack organic pretensions. They have a clear, intelligible formal structure and never shy away from a dialogue with their host environment. The less ons they have lear ned in t his grea t l abor ator y, whi ch h ave been and stil l ar e th e ge ogra phic envi ronm ent that they inha bit, are applied later with the appropriate corrections to any other situation, whether it be a territorial area or an urban site. By this means, they conjure up the naturist tendency that corrodes and weakens so many modern proposals, which often try to respond to the problem of the world’s artificialisation with the evasive answer of the instability and dissolution of form.

I t i s i n c ons tan t e vol uti on and never stops or rests on its laurels, always striving for new experiences and nuances. Even in their early works, one of their main features has been a marked horizontal component that seeks a firmly clutched position of the volume and panoramic view of the exterior. Ano the r r ecu rre nt fig ure is the fra me or out lin e t hat tur ns the who le bui ldi ng int o a n opti cal dev ice and ide nti fie s i ts ima ge wit h a gre at perimeter chassis in which matter is condensed. Through this chassis, a fragment of the landscape is ideally cut out and framed, inviting the viewer to enter the building. However, there is a possibly less obvious aspect resulting from the interaction of these two: the creation of an active void that constitutes the living, geometric centre of these works, a large interior space, available and open, which arises from the dilation effort imposed on the material frame used to construct the unit. At some point, the link between the work of these three architects and aspects of traditional Japanese culture has been pointed out. The overriding value bestowed on the void confirms the existence of this link, but at the same time, it shows that Aranda/Pigem/Vil alta strive for a timelessness— hence the fact that the influences they receive are never immediate or literal, but rather filtered by an abstract, universal idea that transcends them. This search, based on an increasingly intense collaboration with like-minded industrialists and craftspeople, is proposed with a declared ‘experimental proposition’ in the sense of the term used by Oteiza. One building marks the point of inflection in this process: the renovations and extensions to the Les Cols Restaurant in Olot. This work arose from a total complicity between client and architects, who were able to combine their respective knowledge and achieve an environmental totality in which the culinary dimension is combined with the visual, tactile and auditive aspects of architecture. This proj ect defi nes the cri teri a t hat enab le a soli d co untr y ho use or masí a to be turned into a restaurant, preserving as much as possible of the character of the old wall structure while incorporating aspects of modern culture including an osmotic relationship between the main dining room and the exterior environment, a high level of technification and openness in the cooking area and the creation of visu al de vice s tha t fil ter, st ain a nd sp read the l ight , giv ing t he ol d con stru cti on a h igh d egre e of r efi neme nt. T hese are t he re sear ch gu idelines that subsequent projects have developed. The thre e ar chit ects ’ st udio is n o lo nger the smal l cr aft work shop they used in t he b egin ning , bu t th is d oes not seem to h ave chan ged the way they approach their work, nor the reflexive, paused style that makes them stand out, based on a sense of time that gives each aspect its necessary period for decantation and maturity, nor their limitless devotion to each project. This brief commentary cannot even begin to describe the avalanche of ideas and forms being triggered by the projects they are now working on. Instead, I will focus on three general aspects linked to three specific projects I regard as particularly representative of their current interests. In the project for the Visitor's Pavilions annexed to the Les Cols Restaurant, they make a systematic exploration of the possibilities of glass as a tectonic basis for architecture. Their aim is to draw out of this material every possible register it can provide, from total opaqueness to the most complete transparency, transparency, moving through different degrees of translucent vision and refraction. These cubicles or poetrydriven space capsules, designed to capture light by day and night, oscillate with a disturbing ambiguity between being isolation from the worl d a nd a p anth eist ic merg er with the cosm os. This is a r isky exer cise that uses the unde rlyi ng subj ect matt er of the atte mpt to visu alise the invisible using the architectural resource of transparency. Each level detailed in the project for the Carpenter’s House proposes a different spatial experience of the landscape: the entrance entrance level is generated as an excavation of stone material at the foot of the hill, while the rest of the rooms unfold in an audacious game of volumes whic h, w hen used toge ther, stab iliz e th e co nstr ucti on. The resu ltin g fo rm i s e xtre mely scul ptur al, and expr esse s a desi re for e quil ibri um as well as the tension required to produc e it. Unexpectedly, we thus return to one of the crucial points in the search by Ar anda/Pigem/Vilalta: the concept of architecture as pure mediation between the human being and nature. The s eri es of Pub lic f aci lit ies the y hav e des igne d fo r the int eri or of a str eet b loc k in t he Ba rce lon a exp ans ion a rea , a Li bra ry a nd S enio r Citizens' Centre alongside the Sant Antoni Market, is a commitment to the fragmentation of the volume into separate parts in order to reduce the density of the fabric being used. Large pores or honeycombs that allow the air and views to circulate around the constructed items, making the intermediate space, i.e., the void, the feature of the operation. This is used in the combined floor plan, where the library and the pensioners’ centre clad the free space and subject their form to it, and also in the work on the section, which generates a system of intervals with an incredible spatial richness. This set of stra tegi es refe rs to the sear ch for a d iffi cult bala nce betw een the part s a s a n esse ntia l v irtu e o f a rchi tect ure. In this case , the adjective ‘difficult’ refers to the fact that in order to achieve it, no short cut is accepted. In other words, the form has to undergo strenuous tests before it can return to the tensed state of repose we call equilibrium. This process is directly connected to the way that Aran da/P ige m/Vi lalt a ta ckle thei r pro ject s: an inte nse t hree -way dial ogue in wh ich ever ythi ng i s dis cuss ed a nd n othi ng i s dec ided unti l al l three approve the proposed solution. This lead s me back to the spac e sh ared by thes e t hree arch itec ts. As usua l, the work plac e sa ys a lo t a bout the atti tude of its inha bitants. In this case, the discrete, quiet house they use as a studio is in itself an expression of a distanced attitude to the syncopated, frenetic pace imposed by our media-dominated culture. This impression is confirmed when the visitor enters the room they have set aside for themselves. A large square table covered in sketches, notes and publications takes up a large part of the room. Each side of the table belongs to one member of the team, so that all three sit facing each other and work on a single common space. The fourth side, precisely the one alongside the wall, is free and open to the presence of the world.

ALBERCA Y EXTERIORES EN LA VILA DE TRINCHERIA 2002/2003
POND AND EXTERIORS IN VILA DE TRINCHERIA
Many constructions, granaries, the farmhouse, the river, the mill. Beyond its immediate surroundings, the whole environble. The pool does not appear. Instead, there is a pond which, through its shape and level, establishes topological and empathetic conextienden. El acero, cuya presencia y color se integra en el contexto, aparece en los límites de la actuación y en el interior del vaso de hormigón de árido blanco en nections, not just through its spreading tangencies. The presence and colour of steel integrates into the context, appearing on the edges of the operation and forma de nenúfar solidificado, o de hoja poética que no quiere retirarse. inside the vessel of white gravel concrete in the form of a solidified water lily or a poetic leaf that does not want to wither away.
