VD module for Scalance
Ethernet via two-wire cabling? Sure! Plant owners using Profibus or other two-wire cabling in their plants and wanting to switch to Profinet are often faced with high installation costs. The VD module offers a new option for migration.
T
he MM992-2VD module is a new dual-port media module for all modular switches in the Scalance X-300 p roduct line (XR-300/X308-2M) and the Scalance S627-2M security module. The two-wire cable is connected with an RJ45 connector that is plugged into the new twowire network module.
Industrial Ethernet communication using existing cabling The highlight of the new module? During VD (variable distance) operation, Industrial Ethernet communication is made possible via non-Ethernet-specific cabling (Profibus DP or other two-wire cabling) without having to change over to other transmission methods such as DSL, for example. Depending on the quality of the line, distances of up to 500 m at a rate of 100 Mbps or 1,000 m at a rate of 10 Mbps can be covered. Furthermore, the VD module allows for an extension of the standard Industrial Ethernet cable length at 100 Mbps in order to cover even greater distances. This means that remote users at a distance of more than 100 m do not necessarily need to be integrated into the plant’s network using optical fibers but can be integrated by simply using copper cables.
Secure data transmission guaranteed Security does not suffer, either. It is possible to connect the VD media module to the most recent modular version of the Scalance S product line, Scalance S627-2M, thus ensuring secure communication in two-wire lines as well. With the firewall and VPN security functions, Scalance S627-2M can filter data communication and avoid unauthorized access as well as safely authenticate the transmitted data and protect from manipulation and espionage using en cryption.
Installation cost savings Using the VD media module reduces costs when installing a plant, since the already installed copper cables can be used, thus avoiding high cable-laying expenses. In this case, the module can be used as a standard Industrial Ethernet or VD interface. All in all, the new media module offers the possibility to migrate existing Profibus systems to Profinet – without having to lay new cables!

Safety Evaluation Tool
Import function for safety parameters
T
he Safety Evaluation Tool (SET) is a TÜV-certified online tool for the quick and safe evaluation of a machine’s safety functions. The operator receives a standards-conforming report that can be integrated into the docu m entation as proof of safety. Siemens is the first supplier to implement a neutral data interface for importing safety p arameters of other manufacturers by using an XML format in accordance with VDMA (Verband Deut scher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau, the German engineering federation) specifications. The VDMA specification 66413, “Functional safety – universal data format for safety-related values of components or parts of control systems,” describes a standardized electronic exchange format for the safety-relevant parameters of automation components. This allows operators to upload the safety parameters
of the products they use, in a simplified procedure, for their calculations. The data import takes place via the additional parameter library menu item. The new version of the SET also includes additional examples for standards in the comprehensive library as well as an extension of the Siemens safety parameters already stored in the tool for new products, such as the Sirius 3SK1 safety relays and the fail-safe modules of the Simatic ET 200SP. The new data interface makes documentation easier for the operator, especially when using products from different manufacturers. siemens.com/safety-evaluation-tool

Liquid-cooled modules for Sinamics S120
Efficient cooling method
L
iquid-cooled Active Interface Modules (AIMs) and Active Line Modules (ALMs) are now also available for Sinamics S120 low-voltage converters. These modules cover a voltage range between 500 and 690 V, with an output of 1,700 kW. The liquid-cooled solution transfers almost all the heat of the modules to the cooling liquid. Room air-conditioning can therefore be significantly decreased and the associated costs of installation, maintenance, and operation reduced. Because no fans are necessary, the power consumption of the modules is lower as well. Sinamics S120 ALMs are available with outputs of 380 kW, 630 kW, and 900 kW at 380–480 V and of 1,100 kW at 500–690 V. They are able to feed the energy back into the grid, thus offering significant cost savings. AIMs for the grid connection form a functional unit with the ALMs. The AIMs filter the harmonics to a large degree and ensure that there is very little circuit feedback. The new modules contain a liquid-cooled throttle, a liquid-cooled filter module, and fasteners. By connecting up to four identical modules in parallel,
up to 5,700 kW can be realized on the motor side and up to 6,460 kW on the grid side. Due to the compact design, the liquid-cooled converters are recommended for use in limited spaces such as ships’ drives as well as in harsh environments such as in the mining or oil and gas indus tries. siemens.com/sinamics New features • Efficient cooling method with continuous liquid cooling in addition to the air-cooled modules • ALM up to 900 kW at 380–480 V; due to more precise power levels (380/630 kW), the requirements are covered more exactly
