Advertisement can make almost anything look attractive. That’s what tobacco companies and their advertisers have done with smoking. They’ve taken an expensive and unhealthy habit and tried to convince people that it’s glamorous and exciting. Tobacco companies use advertisement to manipulate both teens and adults. What they don’t tell you in cigarette ads is that they want you to become addicted. Tobacco companies closely control the number of teens who are smoking. They worry when those numbers decline because they need new smokers to replace the ones who die each day from smoking-related illnesses.

The internet’s definitely here to stay. The latest figures show that are more than 4.5% million teenagers on the UK and around 60% of these are online and using the net regularly. A favourite for communication and information, the internet is becoming more popular as it becomes cheaper. Activities like sending e-mails and searching for information on the web are being included in the National Curriculum so that children and teenagers grow up with at least the basic knowledge of what the internet can do. Girls are more likely to use the internet for homework, to e-mail and to read magazine-style websites; boys are more likely to download music and play games. But both enjoy chatting and sending e-mails. It’s very important for them to keep in touch. Almost 70% of teenage girls and 50% of boys agree that the internet is a good way to meet new people and 40% agree that you can use it to become closer to your friends. But the net can also be dangerous. Last year two girls ran away to London to meet people they met in a chat room and returned home 3 days later. Fortunately, such cases are rare, although authorities are helping parents and teachers to be more aware of who their children talk to and how much personal information they give. Parents shouldn’t stop their children from using the net, or from corresponding with others because chat rooms can provide a forum for debate and can be used as a study aid.
