Introduction This project variation (PV) is based on Shell Design and Engineering Practice (DEP) 31.38.01.21-Gen, December 1998, Compilation of a Specification for Piping Systems . The latter forms part of Shell Global Solutions International D EP Version 32. DEP 31.38.01.21-Gen is adopted for the Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) New Refinery Project (NRP) and is subject to project-specific amendments, as outlined herein that may include additions, deletions, exceptions, and revisions to the relevant DEP. This PV sha ll be referred, as a requirement, wherever DEP 31.38.01.21-Gen is referenced. In general, the requirements stated in this PV take precedence over and supersede those in the Shell DEPs. Any discrepancy between this PV and oth er NRP documents shall be brought to the attention of the Principal for review and direction. Section and clause numbers shown below correspond to the same numbers in DEP 31.38.01.21-Gen.
Amendmen t Con vent ion s Amendments are changes to the Shell DEP that apply to all applications on the NRP where the DEP is used. Types of amendments include additions, deletions, exceptions, and revisions, and may include the complete replacement of a s ection of a DEP. Amendments are listed by the applicable DEP section or item number and are co llected together in this PV. Each amendment type and symbol included in this PV is defined below. Term or Symbol

Revision
An amendment that revises a limited amount of existing text in the DEP. Example 1: (Revision) The value “3.5 ft.” shall now read as “3.25 ft.” Example 2: (Revision) The term “MAWP” shall now read as “design pressure (DP)”. A line that indicates the beginning and end of an amendment section.

Specific defini tio ns and abbreviation s Piping class definition: (Exception) Piping class
2.2.1
A collection of piping components suitable for a defined service and design limits in a piping system. The piping classes are contained in the following DEPs: DEP 31.38.01.12-Gen., “Piping Classes - Refining and Chemicals”. These are piping classes developed for oil refineries, chemical plants and gas plants, and also suitable for onshore exploration and production facilities. DEP 31.38.01.15-Gen., “Piping classes - Exploration and Production”. These are piping classes developed for offshore facilities (platform piping). NOTE: For standardization and interchangeability reasons, the Principal may decide to use these piping classes for onshore facilities also.
SIOP/SIEP piping class es Clause title: (Revision) The clause title “2.2.1 SIOP/SIEP piping classes” shall now read as “2.2.1 DEP piping classes”. Paragraph 1: (Exception) The piping classes are contained in DEP 31.38.01.12-Gen., “Piping Classes - Refining and Chemicals” and in DEP 31.38.01.15-Gen., “Piping Classes - Exploration and Production”. The numbering system of the piping classes, additional technical information, and a general explanation is given in DEP 31.38.01.10-Gen. Paragraph 2: (Exception) The DEP piping classes were developed b y using the most suitable materials in view of fitness for purpose, international, national, and industry standards, availability and commercial aspects. Paragraph 3: (Exception) All piping components of the DEP piping classes are covered by the MESC system. The MESC system provides item descriptions, references to standards, technical specifications and levels of certification. Paragraph 5: (Exception) If the project requirements are not covered by the DEP piping classes, project piping classes should be developed. The Contractor sh all contact the Principal for availability of similar DEP piping classes and, if not available, obtain guidance for the development of project piping classes. Contractor shall also generate and further develop any MESC purchase description in line with project requirements such as Shell DEPs, MESC Additional Documentation and in accordance with Shell MESC template for all piping components of developed piping classes.
2.2.2
Derived pipi ng classes Paragraph 1: (Exception) The use of derived piping classes s hall be avoided whenever possible. Derived p iping classes may be created when a project needs to make "minor" changes to a DEP piping class (e.g., different gaskets or bolting). Deviations f rom the DEP piping class shall be scrutinised and the results reported for resolution by the Principal. Derived piping classes shall not change the piping material, wall thicknesses or ASME rating class of the DEP piping class. If such "major" changes are required, a project piping class shall be created (see 2.2.1).

Contractor shall also generate and further develop any MESC purchase description in line with project requirements such as Shell DEPs, MESC Additional Documentation and in accordance with Shell MESC template for all piping components of developed piping classes.
3.1
GENERAL Paragraph 4: (Deletion) Each revision, including cancellation, shall be indicated by a capital letter and the date of this revision. The first revision letter shall be A; subsequent revisions shall be B, C, etc. (the letters I, J and O shall not be used). On the sheet concerned, the revision letter shall also be indicated in a triangle near the place where the revision has been made. A short description of the revision shall be given on page 1 of derived piping classes and project piping classes. After paragraph 3: (Addition) For revision codes refer to project variation 02.00.00.10-P4001NRP-00-PV - Preparation and Microfilming of technical drawings.
3.4
DESIGN AND ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS Paragraph 3, bullet 2 (Exception) Additional requirements to DEP piping classes. The heading of each sheet shall be related to the relevant subject.
