June 2016 Dear New York-Penn League Fans: It is a pleasure to have you join us in sharing another exciting season of New York-Penn League baseball. Now in our 78th season, we take great pride in being the premier Short-Season league, and the oldest, continuously-operated CLASS A league, in Minor League Baseball. The New YorkYorkPenn League’s 14 clubs have spent the o-season hard at work preparing to bring you another season full of lasting memories. The clubs’ past success has never been more transparent after 1,590,750 fans walked through the gates last season. This was the 15th consecutive season that the New York-Penn League surpassed 1.5 million fans. The action on the eld was equally historic. The West Virginia Black Bears (an aliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates), in its inaugural season in Morgantown, WV, made the NYPL playos as the Wild Card club and then defeated the Williamsport Crosscutters, an aliate of the Philadelphia Phillies and Pinckney Division Champions, in the semi-nal series and then defeated the Staten Island Yankees, an aliate of the New York Yankees and McNamara Division Champions, in the nal series. In the 11th annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game, which was hosted by the Aberdeen Ironbirds (an aliate of the Baltimore Orioles) at Ripken Stadium, the North All-Stars beat the South by a score of 4-2. Tri-City Valley Cats rst baseman and Houston Astros prospect Dexture McCall, as the North’s designated hitter, hit a two-run double in a three-run rst inning to win the TOP the TOP STAR AWARD. The action o-theo-the- eld during the past winter was also exciting. Tri-City ValleyCats President and Principal Owner William (Bill) Gladstone was named the 2015 KING OF BASEBALL at the Baseball Winter Meetings Banquet on Sunday, December 6, 2015, in Nashville, TN. The KING OF BASEBALL is a long-standing award and tradition in which Minor League Baseball recognizes a veteran of professional baseball for longtime dedication and service. In addition to serving on the New York-Penn League’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee, Bill also served as the NYPL’s representative on Minor League Baseball’s Board of Trustees for 12 years, and was a member of several committees, including chairman of Minor League Baseball’s nance committee. Minor League Baseball’s President & CEO Pat O’Conner said, “Bill’s passion for the game of baseball and his presence and input on the Board of Trustees helped grow the Minor League Baseball brand across the th e country.” country.” In 2016, we expect expect more great action on the eld. The 12th annual New York-Penn League AllStar Game will be hosted h osted by the Hudson Valley Renegades (an aliate of the Tampa Tampa Bay Rays) at Dutchess Stadium, Stadium, located in Wappingers Falls, NY, on Tuesday, August 16th. Thank you for joining us this season and helping helpin g the New York-Penn York-Penn League continue its tradition as the most prestigious Short-Season league in professional baseball. Very truly yours, NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE

NYPL Scholarship Program The NYPL Scholarship Program is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the league’s footprint, who has been accepted at any two or fourfour-year year college or university university,, vocational or technical education institution. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball has had on their lives. The Scholarship Program consists of two stages - a local round and the league round. Students apply directly to their their local NYPL NYPL team in the local round and one applicant is chosen by each of the 14 clubs to advance to the league round. The 14 local winners compete for three $2,500 scholarships and the other eleven local winners receive $250 each for books. “The New York ork-Penn -Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors from within our league’s footprint who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the positive benets their local NYPL club has had on their life,” said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. “The Foundation is pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our 14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach eorts.” Students must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and participate in extracirricular activities. Applicants should also be involved with community service and must provide letters of recommendation, a copy of their high school transcript, and letter of acceptance to the college or university that they will attend. In 2015 the three $2,500 scholarships were awarded to students representing the Aberdeen IronBirds, Mahoning Valley Scrappers, and Connecticut Tigers. For more information visit:
