Patient Care Handwash Purpose
Reduces the number of resident and transient bacteria and microorganisms from the hands which transmit infection Prevent transfer of microorganisms from the hospital environment to the patient and from the patient to health care provider
When to wash hands
Before and after patient contact After contact with dirty or contaminated materials (e.g., used linens, used thermometers)
Steps for Patient Care Handwash (Routine) Equipment
Running water (sink and faucets) Handsoap (usually a germicidal agent in dispensers) d ispensers) IAW local SOP
Remove jewelry
CAUTION: Wearing rings in a patient care area should be minimized to reduce possible bacteria locations. If rings are worn, they should be plain and washed when hands are washed.
Stand in front of sink Avoid leaning against sink. sink. Turn on water and adjust temperature. temperature.
NOTE: Knee or foot pedals may be available on some sinks. Warm water is preferable to cold because it avoids chapping skin and removes skin oils.
Wash hands

Procedures for Donning Sterile Gloves
Select and obtain proper size package of sterile gloves Inspect the glove package for signs of contamination. Discard if you find find any of the following: following:

Open the sterile package

Position inner package
