Patient Care Handwash Purpose 



Reduces the number of resident and transient bacteria and microorganisms from the hands which transmit infection Prevent transfer of microorganisms from the hospital environment to the patient and from the patient to health care provider

When to wash hands  

Before and after patient contact After contact with dirty or contaminated materials (e.g., used linens, used thermometers)

Steps for Patient Care Handwash (Routine) Equipment



Running water (sink and faucets) Handsoap (usually a germicidal agent in dispensers) d ispensers) IAW local SOP



Remove jewelry



CAUTION: Wearing rings in a patient care area should be minimized to reduce possible bacteria locations. If rings are worn, they should be plain and washed when hands are washed.  

Stand in front of sink Avoid leaning against sink. sink. Turn on water and adjust temperature. temperature.

NOTE: Knee or foot pedals may be available on some sinks. Warm water is preferable to cold because it avoids chapping skin and removes skin oils. 

Wash hands

Dispose of drying material IAW local SOP - use trash container



Apply hand lotion (optional)--hand lotion aids in preventing skin from chapping

Procedures for Donning Sterile Gloves  

Select and obtain proper size package of sterile gloves Inspect the glove package for signs of contamination. Discard if you find find any of the following: following:

Open the sterile package

1. Place the the package on a flat, flat, clean, clean, dry surface surface in the the area where where the gloves gloves are to be worn worn 2. Peel the the outer outer wrapper wrapper open open to comple completely tely expose expose the inner inner package package 

Position inner package



1. Remove the the inner package touching touching only only the the folded folded side of of the wrapper wrapper 2. Position Position the the package package so that that the the cuff end is nearest nearest to you you Unfold the inner package - Open the package to a fully flat position without touching the gloves



Expose both gloves 1. Grasp the lower lower inside inside corners corners or designa designated ted areas areas on the folder folder 2. Pull gently to the the side side without without touching touching the gloves 

Put on the first glove

Put on the second glove

Adjust the gloves to fit properly
