Site Documentation for Flexi BSC
Guide to Flexi BSC Site Documents
1 Site Documentation for Flexi BSC 1.1
Site Documentation deliveries In release S14, the site documents for Flexi BSC are available in a single documentation set, Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi BSC, Rel.S14, Site Documentation, v.2: • •
in NOLS (Nokia Online Services) in PDF-format on CD-ROM as a part of new network element deliveries
Site documentation in paper format is delivered in ECO folders, and can be ordered separately. Related Flexi BSC documentation In addition to the site documents, hardware-related documentation for Flexi BSC is included in the following publications: •
•
•
•
Hardware Revision List for Flexi BSC, published as PDF in NOLS The Hardware Revision List provides release compatibility information for network element hardware. It lists all the accepted hardware products including interchangeability codes for each release. ESB26 User Guide, published as PDF in NOLS This guide provides information for setting up and configuring the ESB26 LAN switch. ESB24 User Guide, published as PDF in NOLS This guide provides information for setting up and configuring the ESB24 LAN switch. Product Documentation The Product Documentation consists of instructions for implementation, normal daily operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Flexi BSC. It contains instructions, descriptions, and reference information and is available in both online and PDF views. The Product Documentation is delivered via NOLS as Nokia Siemens Networks Electronic Documentation (NED) and on a CD-ROM with the network element delivery. The Product Documentation includes hardware-related documents, such as Engineering for Flexi BSC, Commissioning BSC3i and Flexi BSC, Integration, Replacing Plug-in Units and Other Hardware Units, and Hardware Configuration Management.
The following figure shows the Flexi BSC documentation and its different delivery media.

Flexi BSC documentation and its delivery media
Changes in Site Documentation set in S14.0 This is the second site set for Flexi BSC. Site Documentation codes and versioning The Site Documentation set has a code which is printed on the cover pages of the documents and the binder label. The code shows the revision of the document set. Each document has a document identification (DN number) and issue number. When updates are made to a document, the issue number is increased. The latest issue contains the changes made to the previous issues.
1.2
Site Documentation maintenance The site documents are updated for each release of the network element. After the first Site Documentation set for a release is published, the updates to the site documents are published as follows: •
•
•
Minor changes and updates to the documents are delivered as Change Deliveries to the Site Documentation set in NOLS, for example, Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi BSC, Rel.S14, Site Documentation, v.1, Doc Change Delivery 1. The CD-ROM set delivered with the network element hardware or the paper binder delivered separately is not updated at the same time and thus does not contain the updated versions of the documents. If the changes during the release are extensive, the Site Documentation set is republished with a new revision code. In this case, the CD-ROM set delivered with the network element hardware, the paper binder delivered separately and the Site Documentation set in NOLS are updated. Also, all the updated documents in the intermediate Change Deliveries are included in the updated Site Documentation set. The updated site documents are also included in the Product Documentation NED update packages, available in NOLS.
☞ The latest issues of the site documents are always available in NOLS, in the Site Documentation set or in the Change Deliveries to the Site Documentation set. It is highly recommended to check from time to time that you are using the latest document versions. Crosscheck your documents with the latest Document list and replace old document versions with new ones.

Use of Site Documentation
Guide to Flexi BSC Site Documents
3 Use of Site Documentation The Site Documentation provides information on the hardware of the network element in its maximum configuration.
3.1
Flexi BSC and the use of Site Documentation The following sections introduce concepts used in the Site Documentation for describing the different delivery and use cases of the Flexi BSC. New delivery A new delivery refers to the first delivery of a Flexi BSC in a certain system release. The new delivery contains the latest hardware and configuration options of the network element. The Site Documentation set provides information on all the configurations but there are no delivery-specific site documents. Upgrade delivery An upgrade delivery refers to a case where an existing network element of a certain system release is upgraded to another system release. The site documents are part of an upgrade delivery, and the latest issues of the site documents are available in NOLS as well. Configuration options The Flexi BSC can be configured to meet different capacity requirements: the capacity of the Flexi BSC can be expanded with different kinds of capacity steps. The site documents provide information on all the alternative configurations and capacity steps. Implementation phases and use of site documents The Site Documentation set includes documents for different implementation and usage phases of the Flexi BSC. The following table shows which are the main documents used in each phase.

Example 1: New delivery The Flexi BSC has been ordered as a new delivery. The Site Documentation set is part of the delivery but it can be delivered in ECO folders as well if ordered separately. The delivery also includes a list of the delivered sales items. Use the delivery list to check that the delivery contains all the ordered items. First, study the document Unpacking the DX 200 Cabinet for instructions on how to properly unpack the cabinets from their carrier packages. Installing Flexi BSC and TCSM3i explains the basic principles of installing the cabinets. Note that the Flexi BSC can have different possible cabinet configurations; the accepted alternatives are shown in the Installation Site requirements for Flexi BSC and TCSM and in the Engineering for Flexi BSC. The intracabinet cables (cabling running inside a cabinet or between a cabinet and a cabling cabinet) are delivered completely installed in the cabinets. There is no need to do anything to these cables but if you want to check them, the Interconnection Cables in Flexi BSC and the Cabling Instructions for Flexi BSC can be used for this purpose. Note that there are no intercabinet cables (cabling that is led directly from one cabinet to another) in the first-delivery Flexi BSC. In the commissioning phase, use the Commissioning and Commissioning checklist documents. These documents are included in the Product Documentation (NED) library. Note, however, that also site documents are needed during commissioning, for example Jumper Settings of the Plug-in Units in Flexi BSC and TCSM3i and Interconnection Cables in Flexi BSC.
3.3
Example 2: Upgrade delivery In an upgrade delivery, an existing BSC3i 1000/2000 or BSC3i 660 is upgraded to Flexi BSC. The delivery includes, for example, functional units and cables. The Site Documentation set is part of an upgrade delivery - and the latest issues of the site documents are available in NOLS as well. As described in Example 1, consult first the documents Unpacking the DX 200 Cabinet and Installing Flexi BSC and TCSM3i . Next, use the Interconnection cables in Flexi BSC document to check the factory installed cabling and to remove or install cables in accordance with the correct routing. Check against the Hardware Revision List (available in NOLS) that the network element's plug-in units and other products are of correct interchangeability. Also, consult Jumper Settings of the Plug-in Units in Flexi BSC and TCSM3i when checking the jumper setting of the plug-in units.
