DILLI HAAT Dilli Haat has been planned as a democratic space in the city. Public space is integrated witha backdrop of a food and craft market to create an ambience reminiscent of traditionalIndian bazaars. This is an egalitarian space where people from all sections of the societycome to buy crafts, to eat, to relax and to engage in diverse social interaction. Unlike thetraditional weekly market, the village Haat, Dilli Haat is permanent. Some shops arepermanent arepermanent but other sellers are rotated, usually for fifteen days. Products offered mayincluderosewoodands mayincluderosewoodandsandalwoodca andalwoodcarvings,embelli rvings,embellishedcamelhide shedcamelhide footwear, sophisticated fabric and drapery,gems,beads, brassware,metal crafts, andsilkandwool fabrics. Shows promoting handicrafts and handlooms are held at the exhibition hall in thecomplex. To sell wares, there is an application process and spaces are allocated according towhichstatethe seller is from. On festive occasions activities like mehandi, friendship bandmaking, calligraphy, name writing on rice grain etc also take place. 1.1

AREA DISTRIBUTION Dilli Haat covers an area of 2.4 hectares (6 acres) of land. The site was reclaimed by coveringa storm water drain with slab. The entire area has been divided into several spaces, they areadministrative offices, shopping street, food courts, meeting hall, public toilets, drinkingwater drinkingwater area, and amphitheater respectively. The buildings, constructed in exposed brick andstone, with shady verandahs have been inspired by the vernacular architecture of the region(Refer Plate 1).
