Uilleann piper Seamus Ennis was of the opinion this tune was the very best of Irish reels. He was once asked what tune might appropriately follow it in a medley, and after thinking a bit he remarked, "You can’t play anything after the ‘Bucks’!"

During the Battle of Aughrim, a force of Jacobite cavalry under Henry Luttrell was held in reserve to cover the Irish flank. However, rather than counterattacking, their commander ordered them to withdraw, following a route now known locally as "Luttrell's pass". Henry Luttrell was alleged to have been in the pay of the British Williamites and was assassinated in Dublin after the war.

"O I forbid you, maidens a', That wear gowd on your hair, To come or gae by Carterhaugh, For young Tam Lin is there." Tam Lin is the Scottish borderland ballad of a young man, captured for years by the Queen of the Faeries, until he met a young maiden, Janet, who was able to break the Queen's spell and win Tam Lin from her. w ` ` ^ ` & ? ? & ? & & &P ? ? ? ? | 1 ? ^ & ( Francis O'Neill (1848-1936) was an Irish-born American (who became Chief of Chicago Police), flute player, and collector of Irish traditional music. This was a tune he collected from fiddler Edward Cronin, who named it after the Chief. Two of his compilations included "O'Neill's Music of Ireland" (1903), containing 1,850 pieces of music, and "The Dance Music of Ireland" (1907), sometimes called "O'Neill's 1001," because of the number of tunes included.

Inisheer (the island's official name, Inis Oirthir, meaning "east island", and traditionally Inis Thiar, meaning "rear island") is the smallest and most eastern of the three Aran Islands in Galway Bay off the West Coast of Ireland. (Note: Gaelic pronunciation is "ini-seer" meaning "east island" as opposed to "ini-sHeer" which implies "west island")

' | ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 'R ' ? Orkney is an archipelago in northern Scotland, situated 16 kilometres north of the coast of Caithness. An Orcadian is a native of Orkney, a term that reflects a strongly held identity with a tradition of understatement. Although the annexation of the earldom by Scotland took place over five centuries ago in 1472, most Orcadians regard themselves as Orcadians first and Scots second.

The Arran Boat is named for the Scottish Arran isles, not the Irish Aran. It is often spelled incorrectly, but the melody goes to "Queen Mary's Escape From Loch Leven Castle". It is an old trad Scottish tune.

This set dance was composed in honour of the victory of the combined fleets of Britain, France and Russia (and their respective sea captains) over the Egyptian and Turkish fleets at the battle of Navarino in 1827. Navarino bay is off Pylos in the Peloponnese of southern Greece..This was the last great sea battle fought with wooden ships and was decisive in the struggle for Greek independence from the Ottoman empire.

(Poem by Turlough O'Carolan, translated from Gaelic) I wish to speak of a gracious young lady, A loveable lady of beauty and reputation, Who lives in the town near the bay of Loch Riabhach. I'm thankful that I had the chance to meet her. She's lively, airy, - a cultured fine maiden, The love of all Ireland and a nice cultured pearl. O drink up now and don't be slack! To Fanny, the daughter of David.
She is the swan at the edge of the bay, Crowds of men are dying for her love. She's nice gentle Fanny of locks and braids, Who often gets the prize for beauty. May I not leave this world, if I may be so bold, Unless I can cheerfully dance at your wedding feast. I challenge the one who would ever ask a dowry for you, O Pearl-Child of white hands.

` ` ` & ? ? & & &R | ? ? ? ? ? & ? This song chronicles the Easter Uprising of 1916, and encouraged Irish men to fight for the cause of Ireland, rather than for the British, as many young men were doing in World War I. The words of this song were composed by Canon Charles O Neill, who was parish priest of Kilcoo, County Down, Northern Ireland, and later of Newcastle. In 1919 he went to Dublin and attended a sitting of the first Dail Eireann (Irish Parliament). He was moved by the number of members whose names were answered during roll call by "faoi ghlas ag na Gaill" (locked up by the foreigners) and resolved to write a song in commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising. The music belongs to an old love song, recorded in 1913 by John McCormack and the original manuscript of the words and music, in the posession of Kathleen Dallat of Ballycastle, names Carl Hardebeck as the arranger.

Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company. And of all the harm that ere I've done, alas was done to none but me. And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I cannot recall. So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all. Of all the comrades that ere I had, they're sorry for my going away, And of all the sweethearts that ere I had, . they wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise while you should not I will gently rise and I'll softly call, . "Goodnight and joy be with you all! Oh, if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile There is a fair maid in this town that sorely has my heart beguiled Her rosey cheeks and ruby lips, she alone has my heart in thrall. So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

' ? & & ? & & ? & & | & ? ? & ? @ After completion of his harp apprenticeship, one of Turlough 'O Carolan's first patrons, a Squire Reynolds, suggested that he try his hand at composition. His first work, "Si Beag, Si Mor" (1691), resulted from this suggestion. After he finished the composition, his fame was spread throughout all of Ireland and he started his career. "Si" seems to be used interchangeably for the faerie folk as well as their dwelling place; Si Beag, Si Mor is sometimes translated as "Little Faerie Hill, Big Faerie Hill."

(Reel) Spanish Lady
(March) Mhairi's Wedding
As I came down through Dublin City At the hour of twelve at night, Who should I see but a Spanish lady Washing her feet by candle light. First she washed them, then she dried them O’er a fire of amber coal, In all my life I ne’er did see A maid so sweet about the sole.
Chorus: Step we gaily on we go Heel for heel and toe for toe Arm in arm and row and row All for Mairi' s wedding
Chorus: Whack for the toora loora laddy, Whack for the toora loora lay. Whack for the toora loora laddy, Whack for the toora loora lay. As I came back through Dublin city At the hour of half past eight, Who should I spy but the Spanish lady Brushing her hair in broad daylight. First she tossed it, then she brushed it, On her lap was a silver comb, In all my life I ne’er did see A maid so fair since I did roam. Chorus As I went back through Dublin city As the sun began to set, Who should I spy but the Spanish lady Catching a moth in a golden net. When she saw me then she fled me, Lifting her petticoat o’er her knee, In all my life I ne’er did see A maid so shy as the Spanish lady. Chorus
1. Over hill-way up and down Myrtle green and bracken brown Past the shieling through the town All for Mairi's wedding Chorus 2. Plenty herring plenty meal Plenty peat tae fill her creel Plenty bonny bairns as weel That's the toast for Mairi Chorus 3. Cheeks as bright as rowans are Brighter far than any star Fairest of them all by far is my darling Mairi Chorus 4. Over hill-ways up and down Myrtle green and bracken brown Past the sheiling through the town All for sake of Mairi Chorus
I’ve wandered north and I’ve wandered south, Through Stonybatter and Patrick’s Close, Up and around the Glouster diamond And back by Napper Tandy’s house. Old age has her hand laid on me, Cold as a fire of ashy coals, But in all my life I ne’er did see, A maid so sweet as the Spanish lady. Chorus

(Hornpipe) Cronin’s (from the Chieftain’s Long Black Veil) Here we are we've come to call with pipes and flutes and fiddles and all In case of death we've even brought a keener, So, if you're glum and feeling down just feel like us and act the clown And soon there'll be a change in your demeanour. (lilting) I put me money on a horse today for with the race he'd run away Or so a friend that's in the know he told me, Twenty lengths ahead at most, he proundly cantered pass the post But, woe was me, he lost the bloomin' jockey! (lilting) Now of all the places I have seen from China to the Caribbean, Are all across the goat compared to Ireland, From Bally Castle to Tralie the Corup to the Liffy There's no where else on earth but like this island. (lilting) In Hollywood I long to be, no, not the place across the sea, But in county Wicklow, Ireland's lovely garden. Where no pretenders will you find but decent people warm and kind, And flocks of friendly sheep into the bargain. (lilting) For your ills don't take a pill but take it down the road, the hills And listen to the larks lovely warbling, In the evening in the company with music in the key of E You'll be dancing Kerry sets until the morning. (Hornpipe) Red Haired Boy (LittleBeggarman) I am a little beggarman, a begging I have been For three score years in this little isle of green I'm known along the Liffey from the Basin to the Zoo And everybody calls me by the name of Johnny Dhu
O I must be going to bed for it's getting late at night The fire is all raked and now tis out of light For now you've heard the story of my auld rigadoo So good and God be with you, from auld Johnny Dhu
Of all the trades a going, sure the begging is the best For when a man is tired he can sit him down and rest He can beg for his dinner, he has nothing else to do But to slip around the corner with his old rigadoo I slept in a barn one night in Currabawn A shocking wet night it was, but I slept until the dawn There was holes in the roof and the raindrops coming thru And the rats and the cats were a playing peek a boo Who did I waken but the woman of the house With her white spotted apron and her calico blouse She began to frighten and I said boo Sure, don't be afraid at all, it's only Johnny Dhu I met a little girl while a walkin out one day Good morrow little flaxen haired girl, I did say Good morrow little beggarman and how do you do With your rags and your tags and your auld rigadoo I'll buy a pair of leggins and a collar and a tie And a nice young lady I'll go courting by and by I'll buy a pair of goggles and I'll color them with blue And an old fashioned lady I will make her too So all along the high road with my bag upon my back Over the fields with my bulging heavy sack With holes in my shoes and my toes a peeping thru Singing, skin a ma rink a doodle with my auld rigadoo

(Jig) Lanigan’s Ball In the town of Athy one Jeremy Lanigan Battered away till he hadn´t a pound And his father he died and made him a man again, Left him a farm and ten acres of ground He gave a grand party to friends and relations Who did not forget him when come to the wall If you´d only listen, I´ll make your eyes glisten At the rows and ructions of Lanigan´s ball
The boys were as merry, the girls all hearty Dancing around in couples and groups Till an accident happened, young Terence McCarthy He put his right leg through Miss Finerty´s hoops The creature she fainted and cried "Meelia Murther" And called for her brothers and gathered them all Carmody swore that he´d go no further, Till he had satisfaction at Lanigan´s ball (Chorus)
Myself to be sure got free invitations For all the nice girls and boys I might ask In less than a minute both friends and relations Were dancing as merry as bees round a cask Lashing of punch and wine for the ladies Potatoes, cakes, there was bacon and tea There were the Nolans, Dolans, O´Grady´s Courting the girls and dancing away
In the midst of the row miss Kerrigan fainted, Her cheeks at the time as red as a rose. Some of the lads declared she was painted, She took a small drop too much, I suppose. Her sweetheart, Ned Morgan, so powerful and able, When he saw his colleen stretched out by the wall, Tore the left leg from under the table And smashed all the Chaneys at Lanigan's Ball.
(Chorus): Six long months I spent in Dublin Six long months doing nothing at all Six long months I spent in Dublin Learning to dance for Lanigan´s ball She stepped out and I stepped in again, I stepped out and she stepped in again, She stepped out and I stepped in again, Learning to dance for Lanigan´s ball
Boys, oh boys, ´tis there was ructions Myself got a kick from big Phelim McHugh And I soon replied to his kind introduction And kicked him a terrible hullabaloo Casey the piper was nearly being strangled They squeezed up his pipes, bellows, chanters and all And the girls in their ribbons they all got entangled And that put an end to Lanigan´s ball (Chorus)
They were doing all kinds of nonsensical polkas Round the room in a whirly gig But Julia and I soon banished their nonsense And tipped them a twist of a real Irish jig Oh how the girl she really got mad and me Danced that you´d think that the ceiling would fall For I spent three weeks at Brooks Academy Learning to dance for Lanigan´s ball (Chorus) 129
(Polka) Rakes of Mallow
(Polka) The Girl I left Behind Me
(Polka) Muirsheen Durkin
Beauing, belling, dancing, drinking, Breaking windows, cursing, sinking Every raking, never thinking, Live the Rakes of Mallow,
I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill, And o'er the moorland sedgy Such heavy thoughts my heart do fill, Since parting with my Betsey I seek for one as fair and gay, But find none to remind me How sweet the hours I passed away, With the girl I left behind me.
In the days I went a courtin' I was never tired resortin' To an alehouse or a playhouse and many's the house beside But I told me brother Seamus I'd go off and be right famous And I'd never would return again 'til I'd roam the world wide
Spending faster than it comes, Beating waiter's bailiffs, duns, Bacchus' true begotten sons, Live the Rakes of Mallow. One time naught but claret drinking, Then like politicians, thinking To raise the sinking funds when sinking. Live the Rakes of Mallow. When at home, with da-da dying, Still for mellow water crying, But, where there's good claret plying Live the Rakes of Mallow. When at home with dadda dying, Still for Mallow-water crying, But where there is good claret plying Live the rakes of Mallow. Living short but merry lives, Going where the devil drives, Having sweethearts, but no wives, Live the rakes of Mallow. Racking tenants stewards teasing, Swiftly spending, slowly raising, Wishing to spend all their days in Raking as at Mallow.
O ne'er shall I foget the night, the stars were bright above me And gently lent their silv'ry light when first she vowed to love me But now I'm bound to Brighton camp kind heaven then pray guide me And send me safely back again, to the girl I left behind me Her golden hair in ringlets fair, her eyes like diamonds shining Her slender waist, her heavenly face, that leaves my heart still pining Ye gods above oh hear my prayer to my beauteous fair to find me And send me safely back again, to the girl I left behind me The bee shall honey taste no more, the dove become a ranger The falling waters cease to roar, ere I shall seek to change her The vows we made to heav'n above shall ever cheer and bind me In constancy to her I love, the girl I left behind me.
Goodbye Muirsheen Durkin sure I'm sick and tired of workin' No more I'll dig the praties and no longer I'll be fooled As sure as me name is Carney I'll be off to California Where instead of diggin' praties I'll be diggin' lumps of gold I've courted girls in Blarney in Kanturk and in Killarney In Passage and in Queenstown that is the Cobh of Cork Goodbye to all this pleasure I'll be off to take me leisure And the next time that you hear from me will be a letter from New York So it's goodbye Muirsheen Durkin I'm sick and tired of workin' No more I'll dig the praties and no longer I'll be fooled As sure as me name is Carney I'll be off to California Where instead of diggin' praties I'll be diggin' lumps of gold Goodbye to the girls at home I'm going far across the foam To try and make me fortune in far America There's gold and jewels in plenty for the poor and for the gentry And when I return again I never more will say Goodbye Muirsheen Durkin sure I'm sick and tired of workin' No more I'll dig the praties and no longer I'll be fooled For as sure as me name is Carney I'll be off to California Where instead of diggin' praties I'll be diggin' lumps of gold
Then to end this raking life, They get sober, take a wife, Ever after live in strife, And wish again for Mallow. 130
(March) A Nation Once Again When boyhood's fire was in my blood I read of ancient freemen, For Greece and Rome who bravely stood, Three hundred men and three men; And then I prayed I yet might see Our fetters rent in twain, And Ireland, long a province, be A Nation once again! A Nation once again, A Nation once again, And lreland, long a province, be A Nation once again! And from that time, through wildest woe, That hope has shone a far light, Nor could love's brightest summer glow Outshine that solemn starlight; It seemed to watch above my head In forum, field and fane, Its angel voice sang round my bed, A Nation once again! It whisper'd too, that freedom's ark And service high and holy, Would be profaned by feelings dark And passions vain or lowly; For, Freedom comes from God's right hand, And needs a Godly train; And righteous men must make our land A Nation once again! So, as I grew from boy to man, I bent me to that bidding My spirit of each selfish plan And cruel passion ridding; For, thus I hoped some day to aid, Oh, can such hope be vain? When my dear country shall be made A Nation once again! 131
(March) Jenny Nattles Jenny Nettles was a comely and fetching maiden of the village of Strathmiglo, who fell deeply in love with a Highland Officer attached to the command of Rob Roy. The famous outlaw chief had invaded the countryside for a time but was forced to retreat to the mountains for safety, and when the clansmen marched off Jenny was deserted by her lover. In bitterness and pain from her lost love, Jenny hung herself by a roadside tree. As a suicide, Jenny Nettles could not be buried in hallowed ground, nor could a coffin be fashioned for her eternal rest. She was buried in the middle of the night in an unmarked grave. Her final resting place is at a crossroads of two forest paths on the north side of the Lomond Hills in Fife, a few minutes' walk out of Strathmiglo. Local lore has it that Jennie’s ghost wanders the muir on bright moonlit nights, looking for her lost Highland love.

(March) O’Donnell Abu Proudly the note of the trumpet is sounding Loudly the warcries arise on the gale Fleetly the steed by Lough Swilly is bounding To join the thick squadrons on Saimiers green vale! On every mountaineer! Stranger to flight or fear! Rush to the standard of dauntless Red Hugh! Bonnaught and Gallowglass, throng from each mountain pass! Onward for Erin! O'Donnell abu! Princely O'Neill to our aid is advancing With many a chieftain and warrior clan! A thousand proud steeds in his vanguard are prancing Neath the Borderers brave from the banks of the Bann! Many a heart shall quail under its coat of mail, Deeply the merciless foeman shall rue When on his ear shall ring, borne on the breezes wing TyrConnell's dread war cry O'Donnell abu! Wildly o'er Desmond the warwolf is howling Fearless the eagle sweeps over the plain The fox in the streets of the city is prowling And all who would conquer them are banished, or slain! On with O'Donnell then! Fight the good fight again! Sons of TyrConnell are valiant and true! Make the proud Saxon feel Erin's avenging steel! Strike! For your Country! O'Donnell abu!
(March) The Boys of Wexford In comes the captain's daughter, the captain of the Yeos, Saying; ""Brave United Irish men, We'll ne'er again be foes. A thousand pounds I'll bring, If you will fly from home with me, And dress myself in man's attire, and fight for liberty."" cho: We are the boys of Wexford, who fought with heart and hand, To burst in twain the galling chain, and free our native land. "I want no gold, my maiden fair, to fly from home with thee; Your shining eyes will be my prize - more dear than gold to me. I want no gold to nerve my arm, to do a true man's part, To free my native land I'd gladly give the red drops of my heart." And when we left our cabins, boys, we left with right good will, To see our friends and neighbours that were at Vinegar Hill! A young man from our Irish ranks, a cannon he let go; He slapt it into Lord Mountjoy - a tyrant he laid low! We bravely fought and conquered at Ross and Wexford town; Three Bullet Gate for years to come will speak for our renown; Through Walpole's horse and Walpole's foot on Tubberneering's day, Depending on the long, bright pike, we cut our gory way. And Oulart's name shall be their shame, who still we ne'er did fear, For every man could do his part like Forth and Shelmalier! And if for want of leaders, we lost at Vinegar Hill, We're ready for another fight, and love our country still!

(March) Scotland the Brave
(March) The Minstrel Boy
(March) Kelly of Killane
Hark! When the night is falling Hark! Hear the pipes are calling, Loudly and proudly calling, down through the glen. There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland men.
The minstrel boy to the war is gone, In the ranks of death ye will find him; His father's sword he hath girded on, And his wild harp slung behind him; "Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard, "Tho' all the world betrays thee, One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard, One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
What's the news what's the news Oh my bold chevalier with the long barrelled gun of the sea Pray what wind from the south brings your messenger here With this hymn of the dawn for the free Goodly news goodly news do I bring you perforce Goodly news do I bring bargee man For the boys march at dawn from the south to the north Led by Kelly the boy from Killan
The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain Could not bring that proud soul under; The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again, For he tore its chords asunder; And said "No chains shall sully thee, Thou soul of love and brav'ry! Thy songs were made for the pure and free They shall never sound in slavery!"
Tell me who is the giant with the gold curling hair He who strides at the head of your band Seven feet is his height with some inches to spare He looks like a king in command Ah me boys that's the pride of the bold chevaliers The greatest of heroes and men So fling your beavers aloft and give three ringing cheers For John Kelly the boy from Killan
(During the American Civil War a third verse was written by an unknown author, and is sometimes included in renditions of the song: )
Enniscorthy's in flames and old Wexford has won And tomorrow the Barrow we'll ford On a hill over the town we have planted a gun That will batter a gateway to Ross All the pikemen and bargee men will march over the hill With brave Harvey to lead in the van But the foremost of all in that grim gap of death Will be Kelly the boy from Killan
Chorus Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave. High in the misty Highlands, Out by the purple islands, Brave are the hearts that beat beneath Scottish skies. Wild are the winds to meet you, Staunch are the friends that greet you, Kind as the love that shines from fair maidens' eyes. Chorus Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish faces, Yearning to feel the kiss of sweet Scottish rain. Where tropic skies are beaming, Love sets the heart a-dreaming, Longing and dreaming for the homeland again.
The Minstrel Boy will return we pray When we hear the news we all will cheer it, The minstrel boy will return one day, Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit. Then may he play on his harp in peace, In a world such as God intended, For all the bitterness of man must cease, And ev'ry battle must be ended.
But the gold sun of freedom grew dark in that spot And it set by the Slaney's red waves And poor Wexford stripped naked, hung high on a cross With her heart pierced by traitors and knaves Glory o glory o glory o to the brave men who died For the cause of long downtrodden man Glory o to Mount Leinster's own darling and pride John Kelly the boy from Killan

(March) The White Cockade
(March) My Love, She's But a Lassie
My love was born in Aberdeen, The bonniest lad that e'er was seen; But now he makes our hearts fu' sad, He's taen the field wi' his white cockade.
My love, she's but a lassie yet, My love, she's but a lassie yet! We'll let her stand a year or twa, She'll no be half sae saucy yet!
O he's a rantin, rovin blade, He's a brisk and a bonny lad, Betide what may, my heart is glad, To see my lad wi his white cockade.
I rue the day I sought her, O! I rue the day I sought her, O! Wha gets her need na say he's woo'd, But he may say he has bought her. O.
Oh leeze me on the philabeg The hairy hough and garten'd leg; But aye the thing that blinds my ee, The white cockade aboun the bree.
Come draw a drap o the best o't yet, Come draw a drap o the best o't yet! Gae seek for pleasure whare ye will, But here I never miss'd it yet,
I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel, My rippling-kame and spinning wheel, To buy my lad a tartan plaid, A braidsword, dirk, and white cockade.
We're a'dry wi drinkin o't, We're a'dry wi drinkin o't! The minister kiss't the fiddler's wifeHe could na preach for thinkin o't!
I'll sell my rokelay and my tow, My good grey mare and hawkit cow, that every loyal Buchan lad May tak the field wi the white cockade.

(Waltz) Spancil Hill
(Waltz) Castle of Dromore
Last night as I lay dreaming of pleasant days gone by My mind being bent on rambling to Ireland I did fly I stepped on board a vision and I followed with the wind And I shortly came to anchor at the cross of Spancil Hill
The October winds lament around, the castle of Dromore Yet peace is in her lofty halls, my loving treasure store Though autumn leaves may droop and die, a bud of spring are you
It being the 23rd June the day before the fair When lreland's sons and daughters in crowds assembled there The young and the old, the brave and the bold their journey to fulfill There were jovial conversations at the fair of Spancil Hill I went to see my neighbors to hear what they might say The old ones were all dead and gone and the young one's turning grey I met with the tailor Quigley, he's a bould as ever still Sure he used to make my britches when I lived in Spancil Hill I paid a flying visit to my first and only love She's as white as any lily and as gentle as a dove She threw her arms around me saying "Johnny I love you still " Oh she's Ned the farmer’s daughter and the flower of Spancil Hill I dreamt I held and kissed her as in the days of yore She said, "Johnny you're only joking like many's the time before" The cock he crew in the morning he crew both loud and shrill And I awoke in California, many miles from Spancil Hill.
Sing hushabye loo, low loo, low lan Hushabye loo, low loo Dread spirits all of black water, Clan Owen's wild banshee Bring no ill wind to him nor us, my helpless babe and me And Holy Mary pitying us to Heaven for grace doth sue Sing hushabye loo, low loo, low lan Hushabye loo, low loo Take time to thrive, my ray of hope, in the garden of Dromore Take heed, young eaglet, till thy wings are feathered fit to soar A little rest and then the world is full of work to do A little rest and then the world is full of work to do Sing hushabye loo, low loo, low lan Hushabye loo, low loo

(Waltz) Green Glens of Antrim
(Waltz) Gentle Maiden
Far across yonder blue Lies a true paradise With the sea rippling over The shingle and spice.
There's one that is a pure as an angel, As fair as the flowers of May, They call her the gentle maiden Wherever she takes her way. Her eyes have the glance of sunlight, As it brightens the blue sea wave And more than the deep sea treasure The love of her heart I crave.
Where the gay honeysuckle Is luring the bee And the green glens of Antrim Are calling to me. If only you knew How the light of the moon Turns a blue Irish bay To a silver lagoon. You'd imagine the picture Of heaven it would be Where the green glens of Antrim Are welcoming to me. And I hope to return To my own Cuchendall It's the one place I know That can outshine them all.
Though parted far from my darling, I dream of her everywhere, The sound of her voice is about me, The spell of her presence there. And whether my prayers be granted, Or whether she pass me by, The face of the gentle maiden Will follow me till I die. From The Fiddler's Companion: was first notated by Ed Bunting in 1839, and that he first heard it from a Miss Murphy of Dublin.
(Waltz) All Around My Hat (Tri-Colored Ribbon) I had a true love, if ever a girl had one I had a true love, a brave lad was he One fine Easter morning, with his gallant comrades He started away for to set Ireland free. cho: All round my hat, I'll wear the tri-colored ribbon All 'round my hat I'll wear the green white and gold; And if anyone should ask me the reason that I'm wearing it It's for my true love (I never more shall see) or (in the I.R.A.) He whispered, "Goodbye, love, Old Ireland is calling High over Dublin the tricolour flies; In the streets of the city, the foeman is falling And wee birds are singing, "Old Ireland, arise!" His bandolier 'round him, his bright eyes a-shining His short service rifle, a beauty to see, There was joy in his eyes, though he left me behind him And started away for to set Ireland free. [My true love is a soldier, he's fighting for old Ireland His short service rifle is a wonder to see; And as the moon was declining, he left me repining His bright bayonet shining, to keep old Ireland free.]
Till I know every stone I will recall every tree Where the green glens of Antrim Are heaven to me.
or: All around my hat I wear the tricolor ribbon All around my hat, until death comes to me And if anybody's asking why do I wear it It's all for my true love, I never more shall see.
But I'd be where the people Are simple and kind And among them there is one That's been aye in my mind.
In prayer and in waiting, the dark days passed over The roar of the guns brought no messge to me I prayed for Old Ireland, I prayed for my true love That he might be safe and Old Ireland be free.
So I pray that the world That in peace let me be Where the green glens of Antrim Are heaven to me.
The struggle is ended, they brought me the story The last whispered message he sent unto me, I was true to the land, love, I fought for her glory And gave up my life for to keep Old Ireland free.
Where the green glens of Antrim Are heaven to me...

(Waltz) The Ash Grove The ash grove how graceful, how plainly 'tis speaking The wind through it playing has language for me. Whenever the light through its branches is breaking, A host of kind faces is gazing at me. The friends from my childhood again are before me Each step brings a memory as freely I roam. With soft whispers laden the leaves rustle o’er me The ash grove, the ash grove alone is my home. Down yonder green meadow where streamlets meander When twilight is fading I pensively roam Or in the bright noon tide in solitude wander Amid the dark spaces of that lonely ash grove. ‘Twas there while the black bird was cheerfully singing I first met my dear one the joy of my heart Around us for gladness the blue bells were springing The ash grove, the ash grove that sheltered my home. My lips smile no more, my heart loses its lightness; No dream of the future my spirit can cheer. I only can brood on the past and its brightness The dear ones I long for again gather here. From ev'ry dark nook they press forward to meet me; I lift up my eyes to the broad leafy dome, And others are there, looking downward to greet me The ash grove, the ash grove, again is my home.
(Waltz) Westering Home (Trasna na dTonnta) Westering home and a song in the air Light in the eye and its good by to care Laughter o love and a welcoming there Isle of my heart my own land Tell me a tale of the Orient gay Tell me of riches that come from Cathay Ah but it's grand to be waken at day And find oneself nearer to Islay And it's westering home with a song in the air Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care Laughter and love are a welcoming there Pride of my heart my own love Where are the folks like the folks of the west Canty and couthy and kindly, our best There I would hie me and there I would rest At home with my own folks in Islay And it's westering home with a song in the air Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care Laughter and love are a welcoming there Pride of my heart my own love Now I'm at home and at home I do lay Dreaming of riches that come from Cathay I'll hop a good ship and be on my way And bring back my fortune to Islay And it's westering home with a song in the air Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care Laughter and love are a welcoming there Pride of my heart my own love

(Waltz) Nut Brown Maiden Chorus: Ho ro my nut-brown maiden, Hee ree my nut-brown maiden, Ho ro ro maiden, For she's the maid for me. Her eye so mildly beaming, Her look so frank and free, In waking or in dreaming, Is evermore with me. O Mary, mild-eyed Mary, By land or on the sea, Though time or tide may vary My heart beats true for thee. And since from thee I parted, A long and weary while, I wander heavy hearted With longing for thy smile. Mine Eyes that never vary From pointing to the glen Where blooms my Highland Mary Like wild rose 'neath the ben. And when the blossoms laden, Bright summer comes again, I'll fetch my nut-brown maiden Down from the bonnie glen. "One of the most popular songs of the Highlands, this was translatedfrom the Gaelic in the nineteenth century by the Scottish poet John Stuart Blackie.

(Waltz) Loch Lomond By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes, Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae, On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Chorus: Oh! Ye'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road, And I'll be in Scotland afore ye, But me and my true love will never meet again, On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. 'Twas then that we parted, In yon shady glen, On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond, Where, in purple hue, The highland hills we view, And the moon coming out in the gloaming. The wee birdies sing, And the wild flowers spring, And in sunshine the waters sleeping. But the broken heart it kens, Nae second spring again, Though the waeful may cease frae their greeting

(Air) The Foggy Dew As down the glen one Easter morn to a city fair rode I There Armed lines of marching men in squadrons passed me by No pipe did hum, no battle drum did sound its loud tattoo But the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swell rang out through the foggy dew Right proudly high over Dublin Town they hung out the flag of war 'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar And from the plains of Royal Meath strong men came hurrying through While Britannia's Huns, with their long range guns sailed in through the foggy dew Oh the night fell black, and the rifles' crack made perfidious Albion reel In the leaden rain, seven tongues of flame did shine o'er the lines of steel By each shining blade a prayer was said, that to Ireland her sons be true But when morning broke, still the war flag shook out its folds in the foggy dew 'Twas England bade our wild geese go, that "small nations might be free"; Their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves or the fringe of the great North Sea. Oh, had they died by Pearse's side or fought with Cathal Brugha* Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep, 'neath the shroud of the foggy dew. Oh the bravest fell, and the Requiem bell rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide in the spring time of the year And the world did gaze, in deep amaze, at those fearless men, but few, Who bore the fight that freedom's light might shine through the foggy dew As back through the glen I rode again and my heart with grief was sore For I parted then with valiant men whom I never shall see more But to and fro in my dreams I go and I kneel and pray for you, For slavery fled, O glorious dead, when you fell in the foggy dew.
