Introduction Music s contnually changing and expandng and as such more styles of musc exist today than ever bere. Many diferent styles of music are being drawn upon to nfluence the creation of new styles and expand the parameters of old styles. Drmmers therere have to be more versatle and kowledgeable than ever befre and hence �ving a sound understanding of many styles of musc s nvaluable. Ths book presumes no prevous musical knowledge and clearly and carelly famlarses ts reader with the necessary theoretcal and practcal knowledge required by todays perrming drummer. Basic inormaton such as explanaton of notation equpment, holding the drumsticks and practce suggestons are covered on pages 5-9. Ths information is vital r people wth no prevous knowledge of drms. The book is then split nto three carelly graded sections each coverng ndamental topcs. Sections are used r 2 primary reasons: 1) Drummers of any level can easly access relevant materal 2) This rmat allows greater fexblty. An ndvdual can progress n any directon at any time depending upon his or her needs. Section 1 ntroduces musc theory and sght readng exercises. The understanding of the latter
sectons relies on materal covered in ths secton. Section 2 introduces nrmaton and exercses whch are vital in developing stick control. Many
of the beats and lls covered n Secton 3 require master f stck control to be properly executed. ection 3 gves examples of beats fills and solos in various styles.
As mentoned earler, ths book s desgned to be exble. Here are 4 examples of possble usage Example 1- You may wsh to play the beats and fills cvered on page 52 but don't possess the
theoretical owledge needed. Ether work through the appropriate section (n this case Section 1 Theory and Sght Reading Exercises) untl you develop the knowledge requred or access the approprate informaton directly. Example 2 You ma wish to play the fills shown on page 58 but dont possess the necessary
stck control. Stck Control being the key words either work through Secton 2 (Stick Control) untl you gain the level of proicency required or seek drectly the exercises approprate to the task. Example 3 You may wish to develop all fcets of your playing equally If so simply work on a
moderate number of exercses om each section progressvely repeating this process as requred Example 4 You can also work through the book page by page as each secton is graded and
ntroduces material as t s needed. Throughout the book occur explanations of various deas under the heading Concepts. These were ncluded to gve a greater understandng of certan aspects of drumming and so lead to ster and more thorough leang. Styles such as Rock Metal Jazz et. are covered and included are the most used and best sounding technques and pattes fr each. ach exercise in this book should be played twent tmes bere progressing.
