私と夫は、 エジェンが私達を訪ねて来て私達にこの酔狂で素晴らしいコスプレについての本の企画を話しくれた時に、 ちょうど十年ぶりに 「Fanime」 に行こうとい
ある。 しかしながら、 そのプロセスには膨大な年月を費やしている—おそらく、 本書において参加して頂いたコスプレイヤー(コスプレをする人達)の各々がアニ
う計画を立てていて、 毎度のごとくパネルをまわり、 ショッピングをし、 会場をひやかして歩こう という計画だったのだが—彼のおかげで、そこに、 彼の移動式”オ
メや漫画、テレビゲーム、ビジュアル系やゴスロリ・ファッシ ョンといったものに初めて出会った頃からの年月を。 そして、 何より筆者エジェンがアニメファンとなっ
フィス”にて交替で手伝いをする、 という目的も加わり、 結果より楽しいひとときをサンノゼにて彼と一緒に 過ごすことが出来た。
た頃からの年月を。 筆者エジェン自体は （まだ） コスプレイヤーではないかもしれないが、彼は昔からアニメや漫画の大ファンである。 私は彼を1996年か1997年の頃から、 私の大学の友人であり私達の共通の知人であるウェス という人物を通しオンラインで知り合い今に至るのだが、 元のきっか けというのはウェスが私達にくだらないジョークやおかしな物 事をEメールで送り始めたという事だったと思う。 そして私とエジェ ンもすぐに友人同士となる—エ ジェンはテキサス、 私はアーカンソーという遠く離れた 地に住んで居たが。そしてそのウェス こそが、私がコスプレや漫 画の世界に夢中になるきっかけを作った 熱心なアニメ、漫画、そしてテレビゲームのファンなので ある。
当日、 エジェンはコスプレイヤー達 を撮影する為のバック ・ドロップ(背景)と照明機材をロビーにセットし、私はというとコスプレイヤーが撮 影の為にロビーに現 れる度に彼の撮影の仕事ぶりや素晴らしいディテールのコスチュームを見 ながら書類関係の仕事を手伝っていた。 時折、精巧なつくりのヘルメットや二メートル もの大刀（！ ）をちょっとの間持つ 、という様な”仕事”もしながら。 エジェンがコスプレイヤー達と仕事をする様子を見ながら、 そしてコスプレイヤー達がエジェ ンのコスプレに対する熱意とその熱い精神に応えるかの様な様子 を見ているうちに、 私は彼という人間をここ数年の中でもこの瞬 間により良く知れたと思ったものだ。 「素晴らしい！ 」以上のレベルのコスプレをしたコスプレイヤー達と時間を共にする事も非常に興味深い出来事だった。 中にはこちらがゲンナリというか、 うんざ
私が一体どのタイミングでコスプレに興味を 持つようになったかはよく覚えていない が、ウィドヤ・サントソを含む多くの知人とコスプレにつ いて話した後、1998

エジェンは私達がコンベンションに居る間ず っと彼の仕事を手伝うはめになった事に対しずっと 謝り通しだったが、 私達夫婦はこんなにも興味深い人々のすぐ
ェブサイトが出来る前の話である。
近くで彼らのコスチュームを見たり、 エジェンの仕事ぶりを見られ たりと非常に満足のいく一日だった。
では、筆者エジェンはどれ程昔からこの世界に通じていたのだろうか？
アニメ風に言うと”テレポーテーションの道具 ”を失くして しまい、 その後私はエジェンと他のコンベンションに行く事はその 後叶わなかったが、 彼の軌跡を

facebook上の投稿や彼のブログからチェッ クすることは出来た。 そこでは、 彼を応援し続ける熱心で献身的なコスプレイヤー達のグループを見ることもあ った。 私達は個人的にEメールやオンラインチャッ ト等、 また学生の時のような手段で連絡を取り合うようにもなった。

これはアメリカの漫画ファンからしてみれば相 当にレトロなものであろう ！そしてそれより更に以前、 彼がまだ子供だった頃、エジェンは 「科学忍者隊ガッチャマ ン」等もテレビで観ていたりする。 そう、 未だ彼はコスプレの世界にこそ足を踏み入れてはいないのだが、れっきとした”業界人”なのである。 （これはおそらく私 達がアメリカのコンベンションで誰かが チィやユナのコスプレをレトロだと言うのを聞い て年を感じるのと同じ様なことだろう、 と思う） どういう訳か、 我々は未だに「A-kon」 と呼ばれる、 ダラス近郊で開催される素晴らしいコンベンションに一緒に 行けたためしがなく—個々で訪れて はいるのだ が—なので、私がコスプレをしなくなってから数年が 経つが、エジェンは私や私の友人達が以前「あぁっ女神さま ！」のメイン・キャラクター達に変装してステージ を闊歩したり、 自分達のオリジナルの歌詞で「木こりの歌」を「ドミニオン」 作中のキャラクターに 扮して歌ったり、 ”どうやって安物の店からコスプレ用の衣装を見 つけ出すか”といったディスカッシ ョン・パネルの場を設けて活動をしていた事等を全て見逃してしまっている。 （ちなみにコスプレ市場は当時に比べて大幅に拡 大され、今日のコスチュームやスキット(ち ょっとしたコントの様なもの)は 我々が当時やっていたものよりも遥かに優 れていると言わざるを得ない。なので、 コス プレの世界に現役復帰する事を考えると少々怖いような気がする） だが、私達はお互い遠くに住んでいたにも関わらず、 時折会うことは出来ていた。今現在は私も彼もカリフォルニア州に 居を構え、 facebookという摩訶不思議な 物体やコスプレのおかげで旧交を温めることにも成功した。 全て丸く収まった、 という感じである。
持ちでさえいる。 そしてとうとう、 エジェンは彼のクレジットカー ドの限度額を使い切り、 コスプレイヤー達を写真におさめる旅を終え、 全てがどんな具合になったかを知らせる要 約的なメールを私にくれ始めた。 私達のチャットやメールはベイ・ エリアとロサンゼルスの間 で行ったり来たりを繰り返し、 私は彼の為に、手短に下書きのレイア ウトについてコメントをつけたりした。 彼は写真の組み合わせをする段階で多くの難しい決断を下さなければならなかった様だが、彼が送ってくれた要約から、 それぞれの異種の要素が見事に溶け合い、一つの”本物”の形になって行ったこ とが明らかに見て取れた。 「エリア８８」 を書いていた一人の若者は、自分がまさか二十年後に”生きた漫画やアニメのキャラク ター”の撮影をしてまわる ことになるとは思わなかっただろ う、 または自分がこんなプロジェクトを立ち上げるなんて想 像もつかなかったろう、 と私は思う。

This book is a kind of alchemical product, resulting from an fusion of sudden inspirations, crazy ideas, many long journeys, and a lot of long days and nights. However, the process for this alchemy started years ago: at the moment every cosplayer who participated discovered anime, manga, videogames, visual kei, or gothic lolita fashion, and at the moment Ejen became an anime fan. Ejen may not be a cosplayer (yet), but he’s an old-school anime and manga fan. I’ve known him since around 1996 or 19 97, when I first got online and met him through a mutual friend at my university. Our friend, Wes, started e-mailing jokes and strange things to both of us. Pretty soon Ejen and I were friends too, even though Ejen lived in Texas and I lived in Arkansas. Wes was a wildly enthusiastic anime, manga, and video game fan, who stoked my interest in manga and cosplay. I still don’t remember exactly how I became interested in cosplay, but after conversations with various people, including Widya Santoso, I helped start the first (to my knowledge) international English-language cosplay online mailing list in 1998. Of course, this was back before the more efficient and image-friendly mega-sites like Cosplay.com and American Cosplay Paradise existed. Now, how old-school is Ejen? Back in the distant era when people bought manga by going to the comic book store and buying their manga in stapled American comic format, one issue at a time, I saw Ejen’s name signed to a letter to the letter column of Area 88, an underrated shounen romancemilitary story. This was one of the first three manga to be published in English in the United States, after Mai, the Psychic Girl and around the same time as Legend of Kamui. That’s pretty old-school for an American manga fan! Even before that, as a kid, he watched Voltron, Battle of the Planets, and so on. So even though no one’s dragged him into cosplay yet, he’s definitely not a newcomer. (Yeah, this is why we feel old whenever someone at an American convention calls a Chii or Yuna cosplay “old-school.”) Somehow, we never managed to attend Project A-Kon, a fantastic con near Dallas, at the same time, even though we both went to A-Kon. I’ve been on cosplay hiatus for several years, so Ejen may have missed his chance to see me and my friends leap off a stage while dressed as the main characters of Oh My Goddess!, sing our own lyrics to “The Lumberjack Song” while dressed as characters from Dominion Tank Police, or give a panel on how to cosplay out of thrift stores. (The cosplay bar has really been raised since those days, and I have to say that the costumes and the skits these days are far superior to what we did then. It’s pretty intimidating to think about getting back into it.) Although we lived far away, we managed to meet up occasionally, and now we b oth live in California, where we’ve managed to reconnect through the wonders of Facebook and, oddly enough, cosplay. Things have come full circle! My husband and I were already planning to go to Fanime for the first time in years when Ejen came up and stayed with us, told us about his crazy but wonderful cosplay book project, and we all went down to San Jose. My husband and I had planned to do the usual mix of attending panels, shopping, and goofing around at the con, but as it turned out, it was more fun to take turns helping Ejen in his traveling “office.” Ejen had a backdrop and lights set up in the lobby to take photos of cosplayers, and as cosplayers came up to get their portraits taken, I could watch Ejen work, get a great look at the details of the costumes, and help smooth out the process of the paperwork—not to mention occasionally hold an elaborate helmet or a two-meter-long prop sword!
By watching Ejen work with cosplayers, and watching cosplayers respond to Ejen’s enthusiasm for their costumes and personalities, I felt like I got to know him better, after all these years. Getting to spend more than the usual split-second “Great costume!” moment with each cosplayer was also extraordinarily interesting. Some people had excruciatingly perfect costumes, down to every detail; nearly everyone had enthusiasm or personality in spades. Although Ejen kept apologizing for using up our convention time by letting us help him out, we were so fascinated by being around these intriguing people, their costumes, and Ejen’s work that you couldn’t have kept us away. Lacking an anime-style teleportation gadget, I wasn’t able to go along with Ejen to the other conventions, but followed the trek through his public posts on Facebook and the blog, where a supportive and enthusiastic group of cosplayers and fans were cheering him on. We also kept up with private e-mails and chat, just like the old days in college. His collection of photos of cosplayers from across the US (and beyond) grew to a ridiculous size. I couldn’t imagine how he was keeping track of it—judging from some of his communications and screenshots, he was starting to get a little overwhelmed by the magnitude of the project, too. Eventually Ejen wrapped up his travel (and maxed out his credit cards) and started e-mailing me mockups, so I could see how it was coming together. Chat and e-mail flew back and forth from the Bay Area to LA as I gave him a little feedback on the preliminary layouts. He had a lot of hard decisions to make while putting together the combinations of photos, but the mockups made it clear that the disparate elements were starting to merge and turn into a real thing. Somehow, I don’t think that the kid writing in to Area 8 8 would have imagined that 20 years later, he’d be busy taking photos of living, breathing manga and anime characters, or that he would be creating a project like this.

結局私は写真達をすっかりしまい込んでしまい、 2009年の年初めくらいまでコスプレにつ いて考えること もなかった。 しかし多くの人々が私に本 を出版を勧め始 め、2009年の五月頃、 私は2008年のAXでした様に、Fanime conという北カリフォルニアのコンベンションに足を伸 ばし、 同じように写真を撮ろうと決意したのだ った。もしそこでの経験が満足の行くものでなかったら、 私はそこでこのプロジェク トを終えるつもりでいたのだ 。 誰が後にこのプロジェク トが「アメリカでのコスプレ(Co splay in America)」 という、 私の人生をかけたと言っても良い本になると予測出来ただろう？ この本は、 ベスト・コスプレのショーケースの本 ではない。なぜなら、 率直に言って私はそれをするには最も程遠い人間だと思うからだ。 人生で一度もコスプレを したことがないし、 コスプレイヤー達を撮影してまわったのも、 人生でごくわずかな時間だけだ。もしコンベンショ ンに行く機会があれば、あなたは老若男女問 わず、 様々なアニメ好きな人に出会うだろう。 それぞれに異なった人生を歩み、異なったバックグラウンドを持ち、 または異なる人種であったり、 違った州や国か ら訪れていたり—全て、 アニメという同じ愛好するもののもとに集った 人々に！ 旅の道中、私は親ばかの父親達が娘たちとコスプレをしたり、 母親達が息子達とコスプレをしたり、 はたまた友人やカップルでコスプレをしているのも見た 。たく

そしてここから大変な作業が始まった。 写真達は全ての中から250枚程度を選ばなければならなかったのだが、 1,000枚を越える写真の中から選ぶという のは大
日本でなされようがアメリ カでなされようが、 真の意味で、 コスプレとは好きなアニメや漫画やゲームのキャラクターになりき って変装をし、 演じることなのだ。
変なことであった。 作業は何ヶ月もの無数の時間を閉じ込めた巨大なパズルを組み立てているようだった。 時に私は構成を投げ出し、 一からやり直したものだ。
そしてそれは、 往年の子供達が刑事と泥棒を演じること と、 なんら変わらないのである。
実際、本が製本所に向かう最後のその瞬間まで、 私は微調整をしていた。
コスプレイヤーのテキスタイル・ アートとは、 2Dのキャラクターから3Dへの実直な転換と変換だ。 彼らの最終目標とは、 単にお気に入りのキャラクターの装いを

高校時代、私は私のアニメを修正するために30分かけてアニメのビデオテープレンタル屋ADVisionに行ってビデオをレン タルしたものだ。 私が日常的に見 ていた「 魔物ハンター妖子」、 「ソル・ ビアンカ」、 「A.D. POLICE」、そして 「あぁっ 女神さまっ」 を。漫画紙の方では、アメリカでも英訳版漫画販売の先駆者であ る、VIZ and Ecl ipse社の発売した「アップルシード、 」 「エリア88」、 「舞」、 「サイキック・ ガール」をむさぼる様に読んでいた。
この本を見ることで、 読者が実際にアメリカのコンベンションの様子 を感じるとるこ とができたらいいと思う。 コンベンションでの三日間 は、友達と一緒にアニメ をたたえ、 一生懸命に作ったコスプレを見せびらかしたり、 ディーラーの部屋でアニメを 手にいれたり、 新しいゲームを試してみたり、 単に72時間連続で何かを 楽しんだりという素晴らしい機会なの だ。冗談ではなく、 会場では皆ほとんど寝ていなかったと思う。 熱心なコスプレイヤーの一人に、”コスプレのプレ、 はPlay(遊ぶ、楽しむ)なのだから、 楽しまなきゃ真にコスプレをしているとは言えない ”と教わったが、 彼女は正
大学に入る頃までには、 私はすでに USENETニュースグループの初期段階にて他のアニメ好きの同胞を、 ビデオのコピーを互いに交換すべく探していた。 USENETは各自が自分の手持ちのコピーのリストとそのダビングのクオリティ を掲載する仕組みだ。私達は一本ずつビデオテープの交換をしたが、 こつというか ポイントは、 「いかにオリジナルのテープに近いコピーを得るか」 ということだった。 なぜなら、 ダビングのそのまたダビング、 とコピーを重ねるほどクオリティが 当然下がったものになってしまうからだ。 インターネットが今の時代の 様にありふれた物になる前、アニメと漫画を海外で見つけるというこ とは大変なことであ った。 それはただ単に本屋にちょっと立ち寄って、 好きな漫画を買うという今日出来る様な ことでもなかった。90年代、 コンベンションの数々が私達 が唯一と言 っていい程、 唯一アニメ物資を入手出来る場所であった—コンベンションで同士が売ってまわる、 自分たちの町では入手出来ない物の数々を、 彼らは扱ってい た。15年後に一気に話を早送りしてみれば、 我々がしなければいけないことなどGoogle検索窓口で「アニメ」 と入れて検索するだけだというのに。 私が生まれて初めて参加したコンベンションは、 テキサス州はダラスで開催された「 A-kon 」 というものだった。 アメリカ ・バージョン 「ダーティ・ペア」 のアダム・ ウォーレンからサインをもらい、 ビデオ試聴室で何時間も過ごした事を覚えている。 (再度言うが、 限られたアニメのビデオというのは、新しいシリーズを発掘す る事を目的に、多くの人々をコンベンションに向かわせるも のだ。) 当時、コンベンションは、 1,000人の集客も叶わないほどの規模だったが、今日ではA-konの来 場者は17,000人近くと聞く。 私がよく足繁く通ったコンベンショ ンは、いまやアメリカ最長ロング・ ランを記録するコンベンションになったのだ。大学卒 業数年後、 私は仕事に追われていた。ロサンゼルスに越してきて、 写真学を全うしようと少しずつアニメやコミックから遠ざかっていた。 2008年、アニメエクスポ(AX)が私の 裏庭の様な場所、ダウンタウン ・ロサンゼルスに会場を移すまでは。その機会は逃すには惜し過ぎて、 そこで私は写真用の背景とライトを購入したのだった。
しいと思う。 なぜなら、 一日の終わりにコンベンションでは友達と集いポッキ ーを食べているという実に楽しそうな光景が 見られるからだ。 日曜日はたいていどこのコンベンションでも一番ゆっくり とした雰囲気が流れる日であり、 それはAWAも例外ではなかった。コンベンショ ンの常連たちが掘り 出しものをすっかり探し尽く して買い尽くした後の販売業者の部屋では、たくさんの睡眠不足によるディーラーの疲れ切った 顔が見られる。たくさんの友達同 士が—中には次の年までまるまる一年会わない者同士が—別れの挨拶をし合う。誰もが、私も例外でなく顔にうつろな表情を浮かべて。私は腕時計を見て撤 収を決める。いつもコンベンションが終わ る時は、一抹の寂しさがあるものだ。そして私はカメラ機材をごみ袋に押し込み、 カートに乗せ、 駐車場に向かう。 幸運 なことに、 雨は止んでいた。見上げると、 何週間もどしゃぶりの間待ちわび た陽の光と青い空が、雲の隙間から見えた。
私にとって—それはまさに 、ハリウッド映画のような幸せな結末であった。

It was Sunday morning on the 20th of September 2009, and the final day of Anime Weekend Atlanta. Rain had been pouring since I’d arrived and the governor of Georgia had declared a “state of emergency”. On the local news, I watched cars submerged in roaring water and the constant scroll of flash flood warnings on the bottom of the TV screen. I thought to myself – “Seriously, what am I doing here?” If you had told me at the beginning of 2009 that I’d be traveling across America photographing cosplayers for my book - Cosplay in America - I would’ve laughed at you. But here I was - at the last stop in Georgia ending five months of travel from Los Angeles to Baltimore to Dallas to San Jose. After I waterproofed my camera gear by covering it with garbage bags, I wheeled the equipment cart into the convention center hoping that nothing would get soaked. I set up my background of grey seamless-paper and portable strobe light. Each day, I diligently worked for about ten hours, photographing cosplayers. I had a lot of equipment to carry, so in each city I had to find a camera rental house to rent carts and stands, as well as purchase the background paper. The rest of the gear I traveled with on the plane. Many phone calls and emails were made before I even set foot in the state I was traveling to. My expectation was to photograph around 250-350 cosplayers per con (convention), and by the end when I pressed the last shutter, I clocked over 1,650 cosplayers. Whew ! The hard part was about to begin. The photos were to be narrowed down to a select few of about 250. Going through and picking through thousands of images was a challenge. The process was like assembling a massive puzzle, spanning many months and countless hours, pulling together this book. At times I would throw the mock-ups away and start from scratch. Up till the last moment right before the book headed to the printers, I was tweaking the design of the book. It feels like a lifetime ago when I was first introduced to anime by Battle of the Planets (Kagaku Ninja Tai Gatchaman) on late 70’s TV. I remember sitting in front of the TV while my parents yelled at me to get ready. As a teenager, I religiously watched Voltron, Tranzor Z and Robotech as well as other shows such as Transformers, G.I.Joe, Inspector Gadget, and MASK. In 1991, Akira opened my eyes to what anime was capable of. I believe that for many in my generation, the anime gateway drugs were Robotech and Akira. During my high school years, I drove a half hour to AD Vision to rent anime VHS tapes in order to get my anime fix. My diet composed of Devil Hunter Yohko, Sol Bianca, AD Police, and Oh My Goddess. On the manga front, I was devouring Appleseed, Area 88 and Mai, the Psychic Girl, published by VIZ and Eclipse, some of the first publishers to release translated manga series here in the States. By college, I was searching through early USENET newsgroups looking for other folks to trade VHS copies with. Each person would post their list and the quality of their dub. We traded one VHS for another but the trick was to get as close to first generation copy as possible, since each subsequent copy would degrade the quality. In the early days before the Internet became what it is today, it was pretty tough finding anime and manga. It wasn’t as if you could walk into a Borders and just pick up a manga like you can today. Cons in the 90s were pretty much the only anime resource available to us - folks traveled the con circuit selling merchandise unavailable in our towns. Fast forward fifteen years later and all you have to do is Google “anime”. My first con was Project A-kon in Dallas, Texas. I recall meeting and getting an autograph from Adam Warren, the penciller of the Americanized version of Dirty Pair, and spending hours in the video rooms (again, limited anime videos meant many people would go to cons to discover new series). At that time, the convention drew less than 1,000 people. Today A-kon’s attendance reaches close to 17,000. Yes, the little con I used to go to now had grown to be the longest running convention in America.
The years after college were filled with work. I moved to Los Angeles to pursue photography and slowly moved away from anime and comics, until 2008 when Anime Expo (AX) moved to downtown LA, right in my own backyard. The opportunity was too good to pass up so I bought my background and lights. Originally I figured I would just spend a few hours photographing cosplayers but those few hours turned into a day…and a day turned into the next day until next thing I knew, I had been there 3 days ! In the end, I put the photos away and didn’t think about cosplay again until early 2009. A number of people mentioned I should do a book and around May 2009, I decided to travel to Fanime con in northern California and continue the same set-up I had done at AX in ’08. I figured if I wasn’t happy with the experience, I could just end the project, no harm done. Who knew it would turn into Cosplay in America, a project that would pretty much take over my life? This book isn’t here to showcase the best cosplay, because frankly I’m the least qualified person to do so. I have never cosplayed in my life and I’ve only photographed cosplayers for a short amount of time. When you walk into any con, you’ll meet folks of all ages, different walks of life, diverse backgrounds and races, and even different states and nations – all united in their love of anime! In my travels, I saw doting fathers cosplaying with their daughters, mothers with their sons, best friends, and couples. I’ve met professionals (such as doctors and dentists), students, retirees, members of the military and business owners (large and small) among others. My aim here is to simply photograph America through the art of cosplay. Whether done in Japan or America, in the truest sense, cosplay (costume+play) is the act of dressing up and role-playing as your favorite anime, manga and/or video game character, and is no different than yesteryear’s pastime of kids playing cops and robbers. A cosplayer’s textile art is a literal translation and transformation of what is essentially a two-dimensional character transformed into our three-dimensional world and space. Their goal isn’t to simply to dress like them but to embody all of the nuances and characteristics of their anime subject – their speech, walk, pose, everything. The cosplayer’s keen attention to detail is essential. Besides the traditional photographs of cosplayers in their characters’ poses, I photographed cosplayers out of character – mugging with their friends, having a laugh, or throwing up a“V”. To me, Cosplay in America is a rich glimpse of a moment in time, capturing the essence of six American cons in the year 2009. My hope is that by looking through this book, you’ll get an idea of what you would see at the American cons. These three day events are a chance for friends to enjoy themselves in celebration of anime, show off some of their hard work on their cosplay, score some deals at the dealer’s room, try out some new game demos and just to hang out and have fun for 72 hours straight. I kid you not; I don’t think anyone really sleeps at these! As I was informed by an avid cosplayer, “It’s called Cos‘play’ which means if you’re not having fun, then you aren’t doing it right.” And she was correct, because at the end of the day you’re just hanging with your friends and eating Pocky. Sundays is usually the slowest day at the cons and AWA was no different. Down in the dealer room, con-goers searched out bargains, as dealers looked on, many exhausted from lack of sleep. New and old friends hugged each other saying goodbyes – some won’t see each other until next year. Everyone had that glazed look on their faces, including me. I looked at my watch and decided to pack it up. There’s always a bit of sadness when a con wraps up. So I buried my equipment under garbage bags once again and rolled my cart to the parking lot. Luckily the rain had subsided. As I looked above, I could see some of the much-needed rays of sunlight and blue skies peeking through the clouds after weeks of downpour. To me – well, it just felt like a Hollywood ending.

私がコスプレに関する何かを初 めて見たのは、2008年のアニ メボストンでだった。 参考までに言及すると、 アニメボストンの 会場であるハインズ ・ コンベンション ・センターは、 プルデンシャル ・センターの中にあ る小さな教会の斜め向かいに位置し、 私はそこの教会でピアニ ストとして仕事をしています。 アニメボストン 2008は非常に長いイースター(復活祭)のミサ の数々が行われる期間中、 その中の一つである 「炎の恵み」 とい う式典の時にちょうど開催されていました。 その集会に集まった 人々は教会のガラスのドア越しに立っていたのですが 、誰一人と して儀式に集中出来ていなかったと思います。 というのも、 明ら かに教皇の後ろ側に時折姿をあらわす巨大な 剣やアニメ ・キャ ラクターの’NARUTO(ナルト)’がジャンプして歩く様子が見え たからです。 私も、 本当に教会を飛び出してその浮かれた群衆に 混じりたかったで す。 その日そこで過ごした 二時間は、 私の人生 の中でも最も長い二時間に感じられました。 “ The rst time I saw anything that had to do with cosplaying was actually in 2008 for Anime Boston. For anyone who doesn’t know, the Hynes Convention Center, where the convention takes place, is diagonally across from a small chapel inside the Prudential Center. I work for that church as the pianist. Anime Boston 2008 took place during the ridiculously long Easter service masses. During a ceremony called the blessing of the re, when the whole congregation stands facing the glass doors of the chapel. There was no way anyone could focus on the ritual, since we could clearly see behind the priest the occasional giant buster sword, or a Naruto hopping around in the background. I was DYING to get out of church and go join in the shenanigans.... It was the longest 2 hours of my life, right there. “

I was always fond of her, as she was such a strong supporting character. The outt I’m pictured in, though, is not typical of her. This particular one is much lighter, easier to maneuver in, and more fun t o look at.”

最初、 コスプレをした理由は、単にその 服が着たかったからでした。 しかしコス プレを着てコンベンションに参加した 後思ったことは、 コスプレをしな ければ こんなに沢山の素晴らしい人達に出会 えなかった！という事です。 トレンドを学ぶのに一生懸命な人達に 会ったことで 、私はちゃんとした コスチ ュームを作る方法を学ぶことに興味を 覚えました。 何かを手作りするという 事を今まで生きて来た中で一切した事 がなかったのですが、今はそれなしで は生きて行けないとさえ思っています。 “Character design drove my decision to cosplay that rst time, but what kept me cosplaying after that costume was the fact that I met so many amazing people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Meeting people who had dedicated so much time to learning the trade inspired me to learn proper technique instead of lucking into getting a costume to work right. After spending my entire life not doing anything much in the way of an actual craft, I realized that it was something I couldn’t live without. “

人々が自分のコスプレ姿を見る時、 「so-and-so の一キャラクターになりきっている」 と単に思わ れるだけでなく、 その中のなんという名前のキャ ラクターになっているか当ててほしいと願ってい ます。 そしてそのキャラになりきれていると感じて ほしいのです。 私は、 コスプレを知らない人々にコ スプレが何であるかを上手く説明できるように、 出来るだけコスプレについて多くを知ろうと頑張 っています。 それはもしかするとコスプレにはまっていってい るということなのか もしれませんが、自分にとっ て、 何かの役を演じるかのような”コスチューム・ プレイング”こそがコスプレの醍醐味だと思って います。 そうですね、あと、 トイレからフードコートに行く までくらいの短い距離の間に１１人の人から写真 を一緒に撮って下さい、 と頼まれたりするとまる で自分がセレブリティにでもなったかのような気 分を味わえますよ。 “When people look at my Cosplay, I don’t want them to just think, ‘that guy is dressed as so-and-so’, I want them to be able to call out the character’s name and feel like they are interacting with said character. I make sure I know as much as I can about my cosplay so that I can make o-hand references to others about them. I guess that is going deeper into cosplay, “costume playing”, and taking it almost to a role play, but that is most of the enjoyment of cosplay to me. Well that and feeling like a celebrity when 11 people ask for your picture as you are walking from the food court to the bathroom.”
