JESSICA YANG was named one of Cosmo’s 8 Sexiest Models in 2011. She says she was honored to be part of “Show It Off” (p.142), a story about flaunting one’s “flaws.” She says, “It’s not just a beauty editorial but also such a beautiful and happy mindset for all the girls out there and a feature that carries a very meaningful message.” She used to be insecure about her eyes (“they’re not even, one eye has a fold and the other barely does”), but is now no longer bothered. She says, “In the international fashion world, models with Asian eyes have been in demand for years already, so be proud! #AsianPower”

IDGE MENDIOLA is a big fan of ice cream, which he pays homage to in “Sundae School” (p.160), and for which he’s concocted cool combos for us to try. Our regular Whip It Up food stylist loves his new gig for Cosmo. “I’m happy with how much creativity it allows me. The experience itself is fun, fresh (the ideas I come up with sometimes even surprise me), and fierce (how the food photos have come out so far!). It’s an honor to come up with recipes and ideas for Cosmo Girls!” he says. “Cooking is a life skill. It’s necessary for everyday survival. We all eat everyday, and why wait for someone to cook you a tasty meal if you can do it yourself—and even better? Cooking is also very liberating and empowering. Try it!”

a beauty editorial meant to encourage a paradigm shift in the perception of Pinay features considered unattractive in our society: small eyes, a round nose, dark skin, and curly hair. Because readers wrote us to ask about cosmetic procedures to “correct” these “flaws,” we came up with the story in the hopes of convincing them that the generally low regard for these attributes was just a matter of cultural convention, and especially for Filipinos, a question of colonial mentality (with Western features as the ideal), and that we should, instead, revel in what we were born with and makes us different, and appreciate—and even play up—the beauty we fail to see in ourselves over here but is revered elsewhere. To illustrate each feature, we chose some of the top models of the time who were celebrated for (and made a great living out of) their unique kind of beauty, so-called flaws and all. Fast forward to 2015, and it seems that the progressive beauty standard and mindset we hoped to effect had taken a regressive U-turn: Proliferating today is an avalanche of procedures for creating eyefolds to enlarge the eyes, bleaching dark skin, straightening curly hair, and lifting noses to Caucasian levels—even on Asian faces. Our 13-year-old story begged for a remake in this beauty issue, so “Show It Off,” p.142, was born, featuring some of today’s most beautiful models including Cosmo’s 8 Sexiest Models Jessica Yang and Olivia Medina. Sure, we all have freedom of choice and should be able to do whatever we want with our faces and bodies if that’s what makes us happy. But think very hard about whose narrow criteria we’re measuring our looks against: Are we just succumbing to the pressure of conforming to a societal ideal? What if you’re so beautiful naman pala, but were misled into thinking you weren’t, and perhaps just needed a different context—or set of beholders? What a waste of worry and money! “The beginning of all beauty is knowing and liking oneself,” said the late great makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, after he declared, “Beauty is about perception, not about makeup.” Often, too, it’s just a matter of confidence and projection, as any model can tell you. Our first theory: Maja is the realest (sorry, Iggy). Her keen understanding of the world she moves around in makes sure she keeps her place in it: “Forever ko nang maaalala ’yung sinabi sa akin ni Tito Tirso [Cruz] n’un, na bilang artista, kailangan isipin mo na product tayo. ’Di ba, ang product, laging may bagong packaging? New formula? Ano’ng puwedeng i-offer? Ang dami nang bagong artista ngayon. Ano pa’ng puwede mong gawin?” But it’s not all calculated moves and carefully-concocted PR stunts when it comes to her career. Maja believes it all comes down to just doing what’s asked of her. Her take on that viral “Twerk It Like Miley” ASAP number? “I had no idea it would go viral. Ang alam ko lang, every Sunday, I’m just working—sumasayaw ako sa ASAP, and fini-feel ko lang talaga ang sayaw.” Apparently, it is possible to just do your job and get five million views in a week? She pauses, and says, thoughtfully, “Nagugulat pa rin ako kasi ang laki ng social media eh. Iba na talaga tao ngayon. ’Di na enough na araw-araw ka nilang nakikita sa TV, they always want something new from you. Anong bago ang mabibigay mo sa kanila?” She says this without rancor, but with the authority of someone who knows her shit. That clear-eyed shrewdness, which can’t be taught

makeup-free and damp-haired Maja Salvador shakes everyone’s hand, a little timidly. In her chambray button-down and offbrand skinnies, she looks like 90% of the people in the room, but the stunning Louboutin stilettos on her feet are pure artista. As we duly attempt to swallow our shoe envy, she pipes up: “Kagabi ko lang nakita ’yung pegs,” referring to the sexy bodysuits she’s slated to wear today. “Ayoko magpromise ha, medyo mataba ako ngayon.” Frankly, we have no idea what she’s talking about. And anyway, we’re not too worried. If there’s one thing about Maja, it’s that she always, always delivers. Three hours later, Maja has worked several bodysuits, danced effortlessly to several tracks on Spotify, waited patiently as lights, outfits, and makeup are adjusted, and ridden the frenetic wave of energy that is a cover shoot as placidly as humanly possible. This cover could be her sexiest yet. Didn’t we say we weren’t worried? That’s always been the thing about Maja, anyway. Give the girl a chance and she’ll run with it. Give her a beat and she’ll move to it. Ask her a tough question and she’ll answer, eyes unwaveringly on you. She’s built a reputation for being one of the most unguarded, down-to-earth A-listers in local showbiz, while also being one of the most consistently bankable. How does she do it? How does one girl go from screaming Jericho Rosales’s name at mall shows to watching indie shorts with him during their downtime

in any workshop, is what perpetually fuels the “Maja” machine. She knows she has to make moves, so she does. “I always challenge myself. Kailangan ko ’yun eh, para mas ganahan ako, para maging mas determined ako to work.” Which brings us to our second theory: It’s not just that she knows the harsh reality of being a celebrity (“Public property tayo eh,” she shrugs). She knows the harsh reality of being… Maja Salvador. It’s easy for

the public to forget that underneath the platinum albums and the Teacher Georcelle’d booty-shaking, there’s an actual person in there somewhere—a person who gets frustrated, tired, and hurt. But Maja doesn’t ever forget herself. When asked how she deals with the inevitable pagod and frustration that come with the inevitable ups, downs, and trappings of a Maja-level career, she has a lot to say. “Alam mo ’yung frustration?

’Yung pain? Minsan kailangan mong gamitin ’yun eh. Yes, nasasaktan ako—but do I need to dwell on it nang matagal? Ramdamin mo ’yung pain and frustration, then deal with it. If it’s a problem na may solusyon naman, solusyunan na agad. Masayahin talaga akong tao—ayoko nang mabigat.” This practical and positive advice is pure Maja. She puts a premium on herself by making sure she listens to herself, not the people who

always have something to say about her. “Nasa sa’yo kung paano ka tratuhin ng tao. At the end of the day, if you allow them to offend you or treat you a certain way and it affects you, that’s not their fault. I always say: Say what you want, pero kilala ko ang sarili ko. Daming intriga, bashers, but it’s only when I hear something said about me na mapapa-‘Ay, oo nga, totoo sinasabi nila’ ako sa sarili ko, d’un lang ako matatakot. That’s never happened. ”

Knowing your true self is a prized accomplishment not just reserved for celebs. People find it hard to be comfortable in their own skin (to which Maja retorts, “Why?!” like it’s the most unheard of thing, ever), and Maja, champion of to-thine-ownself-be-true, simply says: “Be honest with yourself. If you can change something, then change. If you can’t, tanggapin mo na lang. May mga taong tatanggapin ka, and mayroong hindi, and it’s not your problem if they don’t. You’ll keep growing, at habang tumatanda ka, you should keep discovering yourself.” The most recent thing she’s discovered about herself? A long pause, bor-

dering on awkward, then Maja breaks out into a Mona Lisa smile. “Na maganda talaga ako!” she declares, as the whole studio breaks out into laughter.

STILL NO REGRETS Her cheeky giggles subsiding, she turns serious. “One thing about me is that wala akong pinagsisisihan,” returning to Maja confessional mode. “Sa kahit na anong bagay—trabaho, relationships—choice ko naman kasi ’yun. I try to find my happiness kung saan man ako at that moment; nag-enjoy naman ako sa ginawa ko na ’yun. Huwag ka mag-regret. Part ng life ang pagkakamali. If

you don’t make mistakes, parang ang boring di ba?” Talk of regrets naturally calls to mind the headlines: Maja and Gerald Anderson call it quits. In her last Cosmo interview, Maja only had glowing, gushy comments about her beau, and now she muses on how she is as a girlfriend. “From the start, never ko ipaparamdam na ’di kita mahal, na ’di kita rinerespeto. Lahat ng duties ng girlfriend, basta kaya, ibibigay ko…” She pauses to think, then switches tacks. Enough about Maja the girlfriend, she is happily single now. “May relationship lang talaga na hindi siya. No matter how hard you fight for it, hindi siya eh. You just have to accept that and move on,” she says matter-of-factly. “For now, kailangan ko muna bumawi sa sarili ko. In my last relationship, ibang laban talaga ang binigay ko d’un. And I need to be honest with myself na, ‘Uy Maja, bumawi ka naman.’ I always push myself—hangga’t kaya mo ilaban, you will naman di ba? But siyempre, kailangan mo itanong: Does the relationship still deserve that? ’Yung self-worth mo, pangalagaan mo. You have to know what you deserve. Ask yourself: Worth it pa ba? Respetuhin mo sarili mo. Naniniwala akong di mo kailangan magmakaawa for love. Never ko ginawa ’yun.” Length of time Maja mourned her breakup: “One week ako umiyak. Iniyak ko nang todo,” she says laughingly. “In the end, sasabihin mo sa sarili mo, ’di pa naman katapusan ng mundo.” Her final word on Gerald is true to Maja’s everoptimistic nature: “’Di ako mapagtanong [kung bakit nag-end] or mapag-regret. Naging masaya ako eh. Minahal ko naman at minahal ako. Meron kaming sariling mundo, at sobrang special n’un. So ako, lagi akong nasa

positive. Never akong naging bitter talaga. Hindi naman ako nabuhay lang para magboyfriend. Ang dami ko pang ibang puwedeng gawin.” And this “ibang puwedeng gawin” Maja is maximizing to its fullest potential. Loving her single life, she’s enjoying the luxury of being free to hang out with friends, whose company she can’t get enough of. “I have new friends and I super enjoy their company, in-love ako sa kanila. Para akong nakikipag-boyfriend sa marami. Ha ha! I’m loving myself, and of course, work, work, work!” As if there was any doubt that Maja had her full attention on her career— but now, “work” is about to get even more exciting. Maja’s been given the go signal to tell us the amazing news: “This October, magkakaroon ako ng solo concert,” she divulges excitedly, then pauses for dramatic effect: “Sa MOA Arena.” Maja’s claim as a triple threat is about to be cemented. We comment that she’s well on her way to becoming her life peg, Beyoncé—to which Maja shoots back: “Beyoncé? ’Di naman. Gusto ko maging si… Maja.” She smiles. It’s been a crazy year for Maja, resolving the pain from her past, while preparing for the pressures and pay-offs of the future. But Maja in the present is the very picture of calm, steely motivation backed by a big laugh. She’s moving forward, as she knows no other option, and following her own rhythm. “Gan’un talaga ang life. May mawawala, may dadating, at dapat ’wag mong pangunahan pareho.” She grabs a container of nachos on the way out, and blows everyone a kiss goodbye.

I mean no offense to Karlie or Cara when I say, I wouldn’t want to be your friend. I’m sure they’re delightful. It’s just that I’d always feel like the Judy Greer to their Jennifer Garner, Katherine Heigl, or J.Lo. If you ask most women what they look for in a new friend, they’ll likely describe someone down-toearth, funny, and who they can be themselves in front of. That’s only part of the story. Just like attractiveness plays a part in romantic relationships, research suggests it also plays a part in friendships—even if most of us are unaware or unwilling to admit it. According to a study of college-age women in the journal Human Nature, women tend to have friends who are “similarly attractive.” One possible reason for this “birds of a feather” effect? It can help you attract “potential mates,” says April BleskeRechek, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and the study’s lead author. Meeting friends for drinks, for example, could up your chances of getting noticed by the group of guys across the bar. But this presents a catch-22: Some of us subconsciously seek out friends who may help attract attention, but if they’re too hot, they steal the spotlight. Now your friends aren’t just your allies—they can also be your toughest competition, especially if you perceive yourself as the least attractive one in the group. Like so much else, there is now an acronym for this feeling: DUFF, aka designated ugly fat friend. It’s also the title of a recent movie starring Bella Thorne and Mae Whitman. Playing the titular DUFF onscreen is Whitman, who’s neither fat nor ugly, proving that DUFF-ness doesn’t have to be all about looks—it’s just about feeling inadequate next to a pal. The rich friend with a weekend house, the girl with the hottest boyfriend, the one with the amazing wardrobe—next to these friends, we tend to forget what we bring to the table, and the relationship can feel pretty awkward, even unhealthy. But for better or worse,

“I WAS THE DUFF”

What happens when your best friend is the pretty one? Shannan Rouss, on the thing no one dares talk about. DUFF status isn’t permanent: It can change with things like promotions, breakups, or even how we feel about ourselves that day. I had my own brush with DUFFness during my last year of living in NYC. That’s when I met Kate (not her real name). A former model, she bore a striking resemblance to Adriana Lima—

olive skin, dark hair, blue-green eyes. The only celebrity I’ve ever been told I resemble is Chelsea Handler. Hardly ugly, but unlikely to be confused with a Victoria’s Secret Angel. Kate and I eventually became friends, going out for girls’ dinners and drinks, sharing stories about ex-boyfriends (and potential new ones). When we were out together, I made an effort to keep up with her: I blow-dried my hair and wore my highest heels. I didn’t make a big thing out of it—I think there was a tacit agreement between us not to talk about looks. That way, we could pretend it didn’t matter, at least not in terms of our friendship. Still, when we went up to the bar for another round, Kate was the one the bartender turned to first. I didn’t feel invisible exactly, just more like second-best. Maybe if our friendship had continued (I moved to L.A. just as we were becoming close), those feelings would have subsided. A 2014 study found that having a friend whom we perceive as thinner or prettier can actually boost our self-esteem. The reason? When we feel close to a friend, rather than thinking, She’s so much thinner than I am, we see ourselves as similar to them. Call it “thinner by association,” says lead researcher Ariana Young, an assistant professor of psychology at California Lutheran University. Where Kate has her looks, I have a certain cachet of my own. Around this time, I was getting a book published, which impressed Kate and also caused her to get really name-droppy with me, referencing famous philosophers like Derrida and Chomsky (I had heard of them), even contemporary writers I would have to Google later. Also, she talked so much about work! It was so obvious that Kate was trying to prove she had something to offer besides being hot. It seems that, while I was busy proving I was pretty enough to hang with Kate, Kate was trying to prove she was smart enough to hang with me. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but in those moments, we were each other’s DUFFs.

Let’s make something clear: Choosing someone based on looks isn’t as reductive as dating only stereotypical tall, dark and handsome, sharply dressed males. Choosing to date a guy based on looks means you are attracted to him physically. I would choose personality over looks for making friends, but for someone I want to date, I’ll give looks more weight. Personalities revolve around character traits. These patterns of behavior and temperament indicate whether or not you will get along well with each other. This is a heavier consideration for me when it comes to long-term compatibility and relationships. If you’re prone to occasional verbal diarrhea, don’t panic. Only 7% of communication is based on the actual words you speak, experts say, while 55% is wrapped up in your body language. So, if you follow our tips, the way you hold your body could improve your love life, career and charisma. Confidence coach Nikki Owen agrees. “When you first meet someone, the way they look and move affects how you judge them, even if you don’t realize it.” she says. “Believe it or not, it doesn’t really matter what you say, within reason, as long as you give out the right signals.”

D GET AHEA AT WORK So, can subtle signals really help you ace that meeting or pocket a pay rise? Yes – if you approach your boss the right way. “Take some deep breaths before you go into their office, whether it’s to put forward your ideas, or ask for a pay rise,” says body language expert Robert Phipps. “Try to stand to the left of your boss as you enter – that way you’ll be more engaging

Body language can make your boss rate you in group situations, too. “In meetings, people usually lean forward because they’re listening,” Robert explains. “So if you want to speak up, try sitting back in your seat and raising one hand. The change in position will make you stand out and get you noticed.” Psychologist and body language expert Jo Hemmings also recommends adopting a gesture called “ball holding” during meetings. “Imagine you’re holding a large invisible ball between your hands,” she says. “This is a very open gesture and indicates to other members of the team that they’re safe in your hands.” She also recommends using expansive eye contact. “It’s tempting to focus on one person during an intense meeting,

but sweeping your eyes around the room will embrace the team and encourage people to listen to you. Ensure your posture is strong, and show your boss you’re listening by nodding and leaning your head to one side.” And the way to impress just by sitting at your desk? “Sitting upright will make you look alert,” Jo says. “To improve your telephone manner, speak slower than you would face-toface. You lose volume and bodylanguage cues over the phone, so slow down your pace to make your voice deeper and clearer.” KILLER MOVE When talking to your boss, Robert advises using your right hand to gesture while passing on information, then switching to the left when you need a response. “This creates a subconscious ‘anchor’, which separates listening and speaking in your boss’s mind, and makes for easier communication,” he says. ONE TO WATCH Simon Cowell is the king of self-confidence, and you can tell he’s in control by looking at him move. Although he’s only around 5ft 9in, he walks tall, and sits with his legs and arms stretched out. That willingness to take up space indicates confidencealong with all those cheeky grins and winks, of course.

ROCK YOUR LOVE LIFE If you get tongue-tied around new men, let your body do the talking. “A quick and powerful way to create a bond is to match his gestures and expressions,” says Nikki. “When you talk to him, subtly copy his movements. When people are similar, they instantly like each other.” To find out if he likes you, gaze into his eyes. “Our eyes widen when we’re interested,” Nikki explains. “His pupils will dilate, and he’ll lean forward.” If he looks keen and you’re going in for the kill, try gently touching his arm when you ask him on a date —you’ll be more likely to get a yes. Once you’re an item, body language can help you negotiate some tricky relationship minefields too. Next time you’re rowing over whose turn it is to cook dinner, remember not to touch him. “Touching someone when they’re in a highly emotional state creates a negative trigger,” Nikki explains. “They’ll associate your touch with those negative feelings in future.” A hug won’t cut it. KILLER MOVE Match his breathing. “If he’s breathing deeply, do the same,” Nikki suggests. “You’ll feel an instant warmth – and so will he.” ONE TO WATCH Beyoncé and Jay-Z and Ashton and Mila are perfect examples of a well matched couple in a fulfilling relationship. Carole White, MD of Premier Model Management, says, “Holding yourself upright—shoulders back, head held high—can make you appear taller and slimmer.” We’ve all seen pictures of ourselves that have us clicking “remove tag” faster than you can say, “Urgh.” But whatever your body bugbear, there are ways to look fabulous on camera. “Turn your body slightly away from the camera to erase inches from your hips,” advises Carole. “Then, cross one leg in front of the other – a pose made famous by Victoria Beckham - to make your legs seem longer and slimmer. Putting your hand on your hip will make your arms look longer and slimmer. And elongate your neck by keeping your chin up – this reduces any sagginess and makes you look more confident at the same time.” Killer move “Perfect your ‘slim’ poses in the mirror and recreate them next time a camera is whipped out,” says Carole. As a surgeon undergoing further training in pediatric surgery, Dottie has to juggle a lot of things at once. She checks on her admitted patients at 6 am, performs two to three surgeries, and is on call for emergency operations. She’s on 36 to 48 hour long shifts every three days. As a senior, she’s in charge of delegating tasks to her juniors and keeping morale up. She has to think fast when things go wrong in the operating room. Treating children comes with special challenges as well. “It’s hard to talk to the relatives of a patient with a bad prognosis,” says Dottie. “You become emotionally invested in patients because of your interaction.” HOW SHE STAYS COOL “You have to prepare yourself every morning of every week by creating objectives and familiarizing yourself with everything you’re going to be doing,” says Dottie. “When complications occur during surgery, the only way I can cope is if I’ve prepared myself mentally for what I’m going to do. It takes a lot of the stress away when I know what to expect. When there’s nothing more I can do, I try to differentiate between things I can change and things that are beyond my control.”

Lei produces TV commercials for big brands like McDonald’s and Creamsilk. She’s responsible for making sure everything in the production process goes smoothly from start to finish. “Clients spend millions of pesos for a commercial so there’s no room for mistakes,” she says. “Even if you’ve made a hundred nice commercials in the past, if you make one mistake, you’re gone.” HOW SHE STAYS COOL Lei likes to go to the gym and de-stress as a less costly alternative to retail therapy. “Stress is present in all kinds of work,” she says. “We just have to know how to give ourselves a little break to reflect and understand where the stress is coming from, and how we can deal with it.”

THE NEWS REPORTER Paola Palma, 26

As a journalist for CNN Philippines, Paola’s average workday lasts up to 12 hours. Her success depends on her ability to get people to open up to her. “Some people don’t want to deal with reporters because they think we’re makulit. But no interview, no career,” she says. “It’s also challenging to maintain grace under pressure. You deal with people and you don’t want them to see you’re stressed— you want to make them feel comfortable around you. No matter how stressed you are, you have to show them you’re fine and fake it ’til you make it.” HOW SHE STAYS COOL “I try to drop everything for just a few seconds and take a breather. It could just be a trip to the restroom or a run to the coffee shop. It’s important to give yourself some time to calm down, even just for a little while.”

THE ADVERTISING ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE Thea Briones, 29 As an associate account director, Thea acts as the liaison between her agency and its clients. A big part of account management involves relationship building, and given the number of teams she works with, managing personalities (and sometimes egos, both from client and agency) is a challenge. HOW SHE STAYS COOL For Thea, work-life balance is key. “Don’t wait ’til you’re super stressed and about to blow up,” she says. “When your Happy Jar is full, work-related stress becomes easier to handle. That said, the things that keep me sane and happy are my friends, road trips, and wine! Wine is always a good idea.”

THE BANK EXECUTIVE Anielle Santos Banson, 30 As an associate director of financial markets at an international bank, Anielle has to be plugged in at all times. Once the stock market opens, it’s a hectic day of calling, meeting with clients, and booking trades. The market is only open from 9 am to 4 pm, so Anielle has to finish everything within that window of time. “Working in treasury means you have to have an acute sense of focus and the ability to take swift and efficient action without being reckless. If you make mistakes, it can cause huge losses, dollars and cents. My clients and company expect that I deliver correct results 100% of the time,” says Anielle.

HOW SHE STAYS COOL “I make lists. But what normally happens with anyone is that each list just gets longer and longer. I fix tasks in order of priority, but I also know my limitations,” says Anielle. “I think if you assert all the time that you can do everything yourself, you may leave yourself open to failure at some point. You need to have the humility to know when to ask for help. Why You Must Stand Up to

SEXUAL HARASSMENT Yes, it’s a thing... and it’s happening more than you think. A Cosmo Girl tells her story in the hopes that you won’t ever have to tell your own. He asked for a hug. I thought it was weird, but since we worked together...I hunched my back to protect my chest. He demanded, in his words, “a proper hug.” Who does that? I relented to get it over with but gave the same reluctant hug. To my surprise, he dragged his seat closer to me and tugged forcefully at my wrist to make me sit on his lap. This was a closed-door session in his office. I swept it under the rug, but months later, it happened again. I objected but he was persistent, even placing his hand on my back to pull me to him. I was petrified. This time, he kissed my cheek. I left the room, summoned up courage, and sent him an IM saying I was not comfortable. He took me back to his office, proceeded to tell me that he was not indecent and dropped names of other men who supposedly were. Over the weekend, I decided I had to do something. If it happened the second time or more, it could happen again. Just like you, I am a Cosmo Girl: Fearless. But if it could happen to me, what are the chances it could happen to others? This man always commented about the bodies of other women at work and dropped dirty jokes at any chance. Even our male co-workers talked about his inappropriate behavior. I did research on sexual harassment for hours on end. I was clueless and doubted whether I had enough evidence to make a claim. Was that it? Should it have been worse for it to be considered such? So I stood up to it. He was let go.

TRUE EMPOWERMENT According to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), there were 196 reported cases of sexual harassment in 2013, a five-fold jump from the previous year, along with more than 23,000 other reported cases of violence against women. “True empowerment comes from giving yourself the permission to think and act,” says Meera Vijayann, a survivor of and activist against gender violence. The only way to stop

gender violence from happening is to allow yourself to act on it. I learned through experience that if it is ignored, it will happen again either to you or to others.

THE LAW Work-related sexual harassment is declared unlawful by RA 7877. In general, it is a demanded or requested sexual favor (whether accepted or not) by someone having authority, influence or moral ascendancy over WWW.COSMO.PH

another that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for that employee. The PCW explains that it ranges from lewd comments, offensive jokes and outright propositions (verbal) to a glance, a wink, leering, kissing, brushing up against a person intentionally, pinching and touching to rape or attempted rape (physical). It can be committed by any gender towards any gender. The law requires the employer or head of office to create a committee on decorum and investigation (CODI) of cases on sexual harassment. Atty. Marie Hazel E. Lavitoria, executive director of Sentro ng Alternatibong Lingap Panligal (SALIGAN), further explains, “If a person is sexually harassed in an employment, education, or training environment, he or she can file a report

with the CODI in compliance with the established rules and procedures of said institution. This constitutes an administrative case. The victim can also file a civil case for damages, and a criminal case for violation of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, with the regular courts.” She clarifies that in an administrative case, the victim should provide substantial evidence. On the other hand, a civil case for damages requires preponderance or greater weight of the credible evidence. A criminal case requires proof beyond reasonable ground. When proven, administrative sanction ranges from suspension to termination of an employee. According to RA 7877, a violator of the law can receive 1 month to 6 months of imprisonment or a fine ranging from P10,000 to P20,000, or both.

• Write it down. All the information you feel is relevant to what happened. I provided a screenshot of his apology through IM to prove his admission. There is no such thing as saying too much. Do it as soon as possible while you still remember. Even if you can’t provide evidence as damning as a screenshot, report it. It is possible someone has reported on this person before. If not, be the first. • Tell people, but tell the right people. Talk to HR and a superior ASAP. They will explain office policies and how to file a case, and offer you assistance from time off to counseling. Try not to talk about it with coworkers not directly involved in the case —no need to bother yourself with other people’s opinions at this point. • You need your support system to push through, so tell your partner, friends and family. They will protect you, keep you tough, reassure you when you have doubts and cheer you up. There is no reason for you to forget how to smile. • Do your research. Your office or your lawyer will inform you of what should be done, but understanding what it is and what happened will help you make smart choices and decisions. Outsmarting the enemy is always the best revenge. • Toughen up. I shook off texts calling me names. It will be a fight. This is the time to be rock-solid. There’ll be times you’ll need to recount what happened. It’ll be difficult at first, but retelling it feels like you’re defeating it repeatedly. • See it through. Whether you file a case within your office, with the regular courts, or both, that’s just the start. Attend the hearing: I did—to make sure whatever was said was the truth. I wanted to send the message, “I am strong and he is a coward,” so I faced it all. Every difficult step was worth it in the end.

Help create a gender-safe environment at work Call out sexually offensive behavior towards yourself or other people. The best way to stop it is to flat out say, “Hey! Not cool!”

NEVER VICTIM-BLAME. Chances are, it was difficult for the victim to speak up. Whether it’s a friend confiding in you or a story going around, listen and think it through before putting your two cents in. SUPPORT THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT. We have the feminist movement to thank for RA 7877, which protects all genders. “In our jurisdiction, however, our law against sexual harassment is limited to work and education settings,” says Atty. Lavitoria. There is still much to change with the law, people and society as a whole. Let us offer our support to make those changes happen.

BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER Whatever the outcome, give yourself time to regroup. You don’t have to bury yourself in work. Breathe. There’s no shame in seeking help and counseling, too. Know you did the right thing. There’s no good reason for you to have experienced it. The length of your skirt or the tightness of your dress is never an invitation to violate your rights nor a justification of another person’s lewd behavior. Know that you prevented it from happening to others by fighting against it. Have role models. I read up on young activist Malala Yousafzai and books with strong female characters, watched Wild on a Monday with about five other strangers in the cinema and listened to Beyoncé and Taylor Swift for months. There’s nothing like knowing you are in good company of other powerful women. Reward yourself. Do so with a handy token to remind you of your strength. I got myself a MAC lipstick in Russian Red. Change your phone’s wallpaper to a quote reminding you of how proud you should be. Spread the word and empower others. Inform your friends, both girls and guys, of their rights. Sometimes, people fail to recognize that the treatment they are receiving is sexual harassment. While you’re at it, don’t forget to remind them of actions or words that contribute to the perpetuation of it. “Let us fight the shame and talk about it…The truth is, the end to this problem begins with us,” says Meera. At some point after my whole ordeal, I was hesitant to speak up out of fear of being labeled pikon or renouncing my title as “one of the boys.” I started by standing up to sexual harassment and continued by reaching out to you, the Cosmo reader. Aim to build up an emergency fund with six months’ worth of paychecks. Then you know you won’t go into debt when scenarios like these blow up.

YOUR VET BILL HAS FANGS So your normally spunky dog won’t spark to a game of fetch, and the vet wants to run a series of pricey diagnostic tests. Have an honest

Our coach Tai Bundit is known for saying “Heart Strong” and “Happy Happy.” My biggest lesson from him is that success is absolutely worthless if you’re not happy. You can have all the awards and

Ch ampionship rin g championships and still be miserable. He motivates us to always stay positive, even if we’re at our lowest. Whenever we make mistakes in training, he makes it a point to come up to us and say things like, “You’re so good, you can do it!” He always reminds us to “play happy” and take it easy, and it is this exact mindset that helped us win our second championship.

CHASING AFTER YOUR GOALS In my freshman year, I got an ACL injury. I missed out on playing for two years because of it. I definitely had a lot of doubts that time. Did I want to continue playing? Was it even worth it to try again? I’m grateful for the people who kept telling me that the body will heal itself—it was my mind that was stopping me. I remembered I had already set goals for myself. All I had to do was stick it out. Sure, it took a little longer than planned to achieve my goals, but the lessons I learned along the way made me physically and emotionally stronger.

Start taking preventive measures now, and lower your risk of this kind of cancer that kills the most number of women. 1. Stay off the booze Guilty of reaching for that glass of vino every night (a glass a day shouldn’t hurt right…)? Studies show women who take an alcoholic beverage daily up their chances by nine percent. We’re not saying quit drinking altogether—just don’t do it daily.

Carrying extra pounds ups your estrogen and insulin levels, which scientists say encourage the growth of cancerous cells. Watching what you eat and exercising regularly can lower your risk of breast cancer—working up a sweat decreases the estrogen in the blood and can help your body produce more cancer-fighting cells. Aim for 45 minutes thrice a week!

3. Stick with ‘good’ fat Studies have shown that eating monosaturated fats like olive oil may lower risk of breast cancer. Stick to cuisines like the Mediterranean kind to get your fill!

4. Eat your broccoli Cruciferous veggies (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc) are rich in chemicals called indoles, which boost the body’s ability to burn the kind of estrogen that promotes cancer. Try incorporating them into stir-fried dishes.

Bianca enlisted the help of her elder sister Nikka, who is currently finishing her degree in Interior Design. “I wanted to use all pastel colors,” Bianca recounts, to which Nikka adds, “That’s why we decided to use a shabby-chic theme for her bedroom.”
