As Koperasi IIUM had organized book fair, therefore we recommend two slightly different activities which are Space_Book@DKiiu and Reading Man. Analysis of these projects are mentioned below. RECOMMENDATION Space_Book@DKiiu: Secondhand reading materials will be located at certain bus stands in IIUM. Every fortnight, the books will be collected and relocated to other bus stands by DarulKutub. This project is hoped to instill the culture of „Iqra‟ among IIUM community. The stock of secondhand reading materials can be collected from students, departments, and other business entities in IIUM. Reading Man: In collaboration with The Torch, candid pictures of a student „caught‟ for reading non-textbook materials will be published in The Torch. He or she will receive an „award‟ from DarulKutub. This student will also be given an opportunity to voice out his or her opinion on reading and knowledge seeking, besides sharing the input gathered from the item he or her was caught reading on. Person in Charge: For this project, it requires collaboration with students from two clubs which are: 1) The Torch IIUM: A15cm x 22cm column will be requested from The Torch 2) Journalism Club: Assign members of the club to take photos and write a brief article. Method: The assigned members for Journalism Club will take candid photograph of the students reading outside classroom at each kulliyyah. The students will be interviewed on their reading materials. One winner will be selected based on the interview and an article will be published in The Torch IIUM. Posters of the students will be pasted at selected location in IIUM; Kulliyyah of Engineering, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, Kulliyyah of Education, Kulliyyah of Information, Communication and Technology, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design and Administration center. Duration: The project will be conducted once a month for one long semester in IIUM, which means, four times per semester. The project can be done within the time given.

Method: Shelves with DarulKutub‟s signage will be placed at threemain locations; bus stops of Mahallah Safiyyah, Ameenah and Farouq. Second hand books collected by MRCs will be shelved at these locations. Students can read and keep the books. Duration: The books on the shelves will be updated every week and the second hand books will be collected every month.

Impact The project should be able to benefit the target group which is the IIUM community as a whole. Through this project, reading can be seen from new angle which will encourage reading culture in this university. We expect the following outcomes from these projects: 1. In conclusion, these two projects are in line with the philosophy of IIUM and simultaneously meet the objectives of DarulKutub to enhance its image within IIUM community. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Evidences from our survey indicated that IIUM community is not acting on the importance of reading, thus making it hard for IIUM to share reading culture within the community. Therefore, it is proposed that Darul Kutub to engage into CSR project, space_book@DKiiu by providing reading materials at three main locations in IIUM. This will provide constant awareness and material support to instill motivation for students to read. This project requires RM 790.00 which includes initial cost of RM 630.00 and RM 160.00 recurrence cost. This project is expected to inculcate reading behavior, and develop reading culture in IIUM.

INTRODUCTION

1.1

Problem

An article was published in The Star Online on 19th April 2009 that mentioned Malaysians still not reading enough, says the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Muhyiddin and the statistic is very disappointing. It stated that Malaysians literacy rate is 93.2%, lacking behind Japan, United States and other developed countries with literacy rate of 99%. Besides, although 85% Malaysians read regularly, only 3% out of that 85% fancy reading books while the other 77% prefer newspaper and the remaining choose magazines and comics. Unlike Malaysian readers who prefer light reading materials, 53% of American on the other hand read fiction, while another 43% read non-fiction. In International Islamic University Malaysia, based on our survey conducted on 25 students, only 10% of them will read while waiting for public transport and 12% of them do not read nonacademic books outside classroom. While the philosophy of IIUM is “Iqra”, “Read! In the name of your Lord and Cherisher, who created-”, (Al-„Alaq, verse 1), it seems the students are not giving enough importance towards the first revelation from Allah s.w.t. Thus, as IIUM is aiming at producing future leaders of the ummah, it is crucial that reading culture is inculcated into every heart of IIUM students to ensure that our graduates have the virtue and knowledge vital to govern this country in the future. 1.2

Solution

Problem with reading behaviour can be solved with continuous awareness and adequate support from all parties. The simplest and direct way, to instil motivation to read, is by providing proper facilities at public area. As cited by Clark & Rumbold (2006), according to Krashen (1993), students who choose what they read and have a reading environment, will be more motivated to read. Thus, creating conducive reading environment will foster motivation and simultaneously create a strong reading culture.

As a result, our firm has recommended three main locations in International Islamic University Malaysia to be hotspots for Darul Kutub in conducting the space_book@DKiiu project. 1.3

Objectives

The aim of this proposal is to inculcate reading habit among IIUM community in order to fulfill the philosophy of IIUM. Thus, after a long discussion, our company came up with “space_book@DKiiu” project. It is hoped that this project will indoctrinate the culture of „Iqra‟ among IIUM community especially students. 1.4

Background

Based on the survey that we have conducted on students of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), we found that only 10% of the students would rather read while waiting for public transport. Around two third would equally occupy oneself with mobile phone or converse with others, while around 30% would waste time doing nothing.

Thus, we have identified three main places in IIUM where students usually wait for public transports. Bus-stops near Mahallah Safiyyah, Ameenah, and Farouq are the most suitable places for Darul Kutub to do the CSR project as students can benefit from the reading materials provided in those three places while waiting for public transports.

Location for CSR Activity:

Shelves with Darul Kutub‟s signage will be placed at the three main locations in IIUM, as indicated in the map above. Second hand books collected by MRCs will be shelved at these locations and Journalism Club member will update the reading material every week where students can read and keep the books. 1.5

Data Sources

Data used to come up with this project came from two sources, primary and secondary sources. The primary sources are a questionnaire answered by En. Ahamd Nizam Hussein, General Manager of Koperasi UIAM and a survey distributed to 25 students of IIUM. Journals and newspaper articles are referred to for supportive evidences as secondary sources. 1.6

Scope and Limitations

The project focused on IIUM community as a whole with students as the main target group as they only read text books whereby 12% of them do not read materials unrelated to their field of studies. In finding solution to this problem, we want IIUM community to have access to reading materials by highlighting specified areas for them to read. 4|Page

However, this solution is attached with several limitations listed below; a)

Weather condition: This factor is something uncontrollable. In the project, books will be

put in a shelf with plastic cover to protect them from strong wind and heavy rain that may damage the books. b)

Continuous monitoring: This project requires monitoring effort from Journalism Club,

MRC, and Darul Kutub to ensure that the books are fine, and are collected and placed on the shelves according to the scheduled time. 2.0

DISCUSSION

2.1

Methods

In an article on 19th April by The Star Online (2009) entitle “Malaysians still not reading enough, says Muhyiddin”, Muhyiddin suggested for Malaysia to have more number of bookstores. Thus, IIUM can help to achieve the mission of increasing the availability of books to Malaysians by „bringing‟ books closer to IIUM students through Space_book@DKiiu. There are two issues to be addressed from this project: o Developing intellect: Raymond Lee (2012) in his article mentioned that “Employers in 2012 want graduates who are able to think clearly, deeply and analytically about any situation and find effective solutions.” Meanwhile, Richard Bamberger (1975) in his journal entitled Promoting the Reading Habit remark that “reading research has defined the act of reading in itself as a multi-level mental process which contributes greatly to the development of the intellect.” Thus, Space_book@DKiiu is proposed to stimulate reading habits which is seen as a stepping stone in generating critical thinking. o English proficiency: Article Malaysian Graduates are Low-class (2012) published a statement made by director of Prospect Consulting Sdn Bhd, Nina Adlan, “What‟s the point in having good academic results when they can‟t communicate, can‟t conduct a proper conversation and have no confidence?” Here, it stressed the importance of communication skill and Richard Bamberger (1975) did say that “reading still has an important role in the processes of communication…” 5|Page

In establishing Space_book@DKiiu project, first, second hand book will be collected by MRCs. Then, these books will be stamped with Darul Kutub logo and placed at the shelves provided at certain locations. These shelves with Darul Kutub‟s signage will be place at three selected bus stops in IIUM Gombak campus; bus stops of Mahallah Safiyyah, Ameenah, and Farouq. Students are allowed to read or keep books provided.

Materials and Equipment

These are the list of items required by “space_book@DKiiu”: a)

Shelve: Three small-sized shelves will be used. They can be bought in IKEA or other

furniture store with a price of RM200 each. The main specification of this shelf is that it is made from stainless steel or plastic to preserve books under rain and heat. b)

Signage: “space_book@DKiiu” signage is placed above the shelves. It will be designed

by students from Journalism club with a simple design, yet big enough for people to see from afar. It is worth RM 10 each. c)

Reading materials: Materials consist of old books, magazines, bulletins and newspapers

are updated every week by Journalism Club.

budget figure stated by the management which is RM 1,000. Thus, we have come out with reasonable total cost for the company‟s CSR project. Our cost consists of two types which are initial cost and recurrence cost. Since initial cost which includes shelves and signage that are going to be used for the project will be sustained for a long period, thus, the company only has to cover the cost once or until they become obsolete. For the recurrence cost, since this project will be continuously updated by the Journalism Club once a week for every semester, thus, fees of RM10 is going to be given for every week in every semester to the person in charge.

3.0 CONCLUSION If IIUM community is not encourage to read, it is hard to generate reading culture among IIUM. The absence of reading culture will give birth to a generation without knowledge. In Surah al-Baqarah, verse 269, Allah has mentioned, “He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding (Ulul Albab).” In English commentaries of the quran, “Ulul Albab” is translated as “men of understanding” by „Abdullah Yusuf „Ali (The Holy Quran) and Marmaduke Pickthall (Holy Quran). To be regarded as “men of understanding”, students have to seek knowledge, which can be initiated through reading. Thus, it is suggested that Darul Kutub undertakes this proposed project at the end of this semester, 1st July 2012. The sooner Darul Kutub commences this project, the earlier it is for IIUM to establish reading culture.
