FIRST AID INFORMATION FIRST AID TO INJURIES CAUSED BY HIGH PRESSURE If you underestimate an injury caused by high pressure this can lead to amputation of the injured body part. The injury can be a hardly visible opening in the skin, don’t underestimate it. Everyone who has an accident of high pressure injury should immediate consult a doctor.

Measure at the scene of the accident Calm the injured person! Check consciousness and breathing! Cool and support the injured body part, keep it still and keep it as high as possible. Regarding injuries in the eyes: don’t put any pressure on the eyes.

Transport If the injured person is conscious: Place the person in back position, don’t cover the injured body part, and keep it as high as possible. If the injured person is unconscious: Put the injured person in recovery position, don’t cover the injured body part, and keep it as high as possible.

1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 CCS-COBRA -The Cutting Extinguisher A new and revolutionary method for efficient rescue work, fire fighting, cutting and extinguishing. COBRA is an efficient tool for piercing and cutting in all types of building material wood, steel concrete etc. Cobra’s water jetting technique for cutting is also a highly effective fire suppression system. At the same time as the beam pierce thru the micro droplets, which are produced by the high water pressure of 300 bar (4350 psi) transforms into steam. This process consumes a lot of energy taken from the heat of the fire. The environment around the fire is cool down, as well as oxygen is consumed and dampening the fire. When water transforms into steam it expands with more than 1640 times’ greater volume. The fog-fighting system has a well-known cooling and extinguishing capability. The COBRA water jetting method has a broad range of applications in rescue works and in: • • •

Fire fighting. Cutting of steel and other construction materials. Cold cutting in explosive environment.

COBRA has a very efficient extinguishing capability with the use of a limited amount of water, whereby the secondary damages from water and destroyed constructions can be minimised. Several tools; a hand held lance, a platform lance, the cold tap or a cutting frame performs the cutting and extinguishing. The Cutting Extinguisher consists of following main parts:

A high-pressure water pump unit with working pressure of 300 bar (4350 psi) and water flow of 50 litre/min (13 U.S. gallon/min).

•

Abrasive pressure cylinder of 20 litre (5 U.S. gallon), abrasive mixture approximately 4%.

•

Distribution panel for flow control.

•

A lance for cutting and fire extinguishing.

•

A single ½” hose for water and abrasives from the pump to the lance.

•

Control panel, radio control system, etc.

COBRA is a tool for working in hazardous and explosive areas. COBRA and its patented cold cutting method facilitate cutting hazardous areas. Cutting takes place with no appreciable temperature rise and is the safest known cutting method for use in flammable environment. It can be used e.g. for cutting in and around petroleum cisterns, gas pipes, aeroplanes, and tanker vessels etc. COBRA has been developed and tested in co-operation with Swedish Rescue Services Agency (Governmental organisation). The Swedish Rescue Services Agency has carried out a range of tests with the COBRA. The results from the cutting as well as from the fire-extinguishing capabilities have exceeded the most optimistic Created by Hanna Frohm, Mars 2004

The tests include consumption of water and abrasives, choice of nozzles for cutting and fire extinguishing, power requirements for creating most efficient abrasive water jet stream etc. A regular education and training in the use of the CCS- COBRA system has started in 1999 at all four Fire Academies in Sweden. The Swedish Rescue Service Agency has introduced a number of COBRA units for training purposes. NB! Details regarding operational instructions shall be checked with the drawings and manuals of the vehicle. Each and every unit may differ slightly depending on the installation on the vehicle. 2. SAFETY COBRA is a high pressure jetting system, with pressure up to a maximum of 300 bar (4350 psi). To obtain the cutting effect, abrasive is add to the high-pressure water and this will accelerate through a special designed nozzle. The water and the abrasive create a very strong cutting effect at the nozzle. This can cause severe damages if not handled in the right way, even at great distance, 5-10 metre (16-32 ft), from the nozzle. Only authorised persons shall operate the system. The abrasive jet stream shall not be directly pointed at any person or object. Don’t point the jet stream towards any electrical power lines or electrical installations, this can lead electrical current to the lance. The operator shall always see to that there is a safe area of operation in front of the nozzle. The operator shall also follow all and any national as well as local rules and regulations concerning the use of high-pressure water jetting systems. Maintenance and safety regulation must be found in every vehicle that is equipped with the cutting extinguisher, and all operating personnel should know them well. NB! If there are any personal injuries contact a doctor immediately! Information about working pressure and kind of abrasive shall be enclosed to the hospital if there are any injuries from the beam.

2.1 Personal Safety 2.1.1 Personally Safety Gear The operator and the assistance personnel shall always wear following personal gear: • • • • • •

Face Shield Visor and/or goggles. Gloves. Hardhat. Approved water-blasting suit or a regular fireman suit. Non-skid boots. And if necessary ear protecting cup.

Safety distance to unprotected personnel is 10 metre (33 ft).

Cold Cut System AB 2.1.2 Education and Training of COBRA Only trained personnel shall operate the CCS-COBRA unit. The operator shall carefully follow the operational and maintenance instructions, which are given in written as well as verbally.

2.1.3 Safe Running and Handling of Equipment Follow the recommendation in the service and operation manuals, inclusive the daily routine checks. By visible faults on the equipment, the work must immediately be terminated. A careful control of hose, hand lance and other pressure components shall be done after every use. Control of hose hand lance and other pressure components shall be done once a month, the equipment shall also be test run. The test run shall be documented when the test is performed and send to the responsible of the vehicle for documentation. Only professional and licensed personnel shall carry out repairs and critical adjustments on the equipment. Use only approved spare parts and material.

3. DAILY ROUTINE CHECKS 3.1 Routine Checks The COBRA cutting extinguisher shall always be ready for action. The functions should be checked regularly mechanical as well as hydraulic, also the electrical system. For change of worn 2 out and damaged parts please contact your local service agent . Following parts should be checked as a routine:

3.1.1 Nozzle Check nozzles for wear and tear. A worn out nozzle will not cut well nor give maximum extinguishing effect, as the water pressure will decrease. As a rule of thumb, the nozzle shall be changed if the pressure decrease with more than 25 bar (363 psi) or the hole in the nozzle is larger than 2.4 mm (0.095 in), for a 2.2 mm (0.087 in) nozzle. Damaged nozzles shall always be changed.

3.1.2 Hoses and Couplings Check for wear and tear and also check for any mechanical damages. Damaged couplings and hoses shall be changed.

3.1.3 High Pressure Waterpump Check operation pressure on gauge number 4. Normal operation pressure is 250-300 bar (32254350 psi). If the pressure cannot be maintained within these limits, see faultfinding in chapter 6.

3.1.4 Abrasive Vessel Check that the abrasive vessel is always filled with abrasives and the system is ready for action. For filling up the abrasive: Figure 3.1 Press the stop button.

Open the filling cap on top of the vessel with the allen key, which is enclosed. Place the enclosed funnel in the opening.

Add abrasive, the 20 litre (5.3 U.S. gallon) vessel holds 40 kg (88 lb) and the 10 litre (2.6 U.S. gallon) holds 20 kg (44 lb) Push the abrasive down with the allen key before, removing the funnel. .

Fill the vessel all the way, with fresh water and let the drain line be washed, either with a bottle or with feeding water pressure, by opening valve 2.

Open valve 1 and 2. Restore the stop button by turning it clockwise. The system is now ready fore use.

3.1.5 Lance for Cutting and Extinguishing Check and test the functions of the lance(s) before start of operation. Make sure that all parts are in good operational order. Test all functions as part of the normal maintenance routines.

3.2 After using the equipment 3.2.1 Control of the Equipment after use •

The entire hose shall be taken out and be controlled for any visible damages.

•

The system should be pressurized to control leakage (water, hydraulic oil).

Wash the hose clean from abrasive, it takes approx. 20 seconds (activate the water pump, the abrasive valve is now closed). Check the abrasive valve’s function by spraying water on a painted or rusty steel plate. If the plate’s surface is sandblasted, the abrasive valve has to be changed, because the valve is worn out.

Take in the hose. NB: Don’t forget to loosen the locking screw first! Check for damage on the hose at the same time.

Check the radio transmitter’s lamp. If the lamp blinks green, the battery is ok! But if the lamp blinks red, change the hand lance’s battery and recharge it. NB: It is possible to place the battery wrong.

The abrasiv vessel shall be filled, if it is not filled, fill it up according to chapter 3.1.4.

Check that the valves 1, 2 and 3 on the abrasive vessel are positioned right. (1 and 2 open and 3 closed).

Is it a monthly control, the responsible of the vehicle shall be noticed that a control has been performed.

3.2.2 Care Taking After use of the equipment wash and clean it from abrasive, dirt and/or oil. Keep the vehicle clean as well. Clean the platform lance and its joints and wash the inside of the lance. After cleaning, lubricate hydraulic hoses and joints with silicon spray. When cleaning the hand lance the radio should be removed and all joints and contact surfaces should be clean from abrasive. Wash with water and lubricate with thin lube spray (e.g. WD 40). To control and test the radio, see Appendix V.

Caution Do not use silicon spray on the radio and battery because it will destroy the electric contacts.

4. EQUIPMENT OPERATION 4.1 Set Up and Start Procedure Following should be done before start: •

Check if the valves on the abrasive vessel are positioned according to figure 3.25.

•

Check the connections of the abrasive hose.

•

Connect water to the pump, either to any water supply line providing minimum 50 litre/min (13 U.S. gallon/min), maximum 10 bar (145 psi). NB! Use an armoured hose 1”.

The operator shall also follow all and any national as well as local rules and regulations concerning the use of high-pressure water jetting systems.

4.2 Operation with Hand Held Lance Before start check radio control signals (fresh battery and radio reception).

Start operation by holding the lance secure and pointing in a safe direction.

•

Turn the radio on with the on/off button.

•

Grasp the hand lance in a secure and comfortable grip with both hands. One hand should take hold of the black handle with the triggers for control of the high-pressure pump and the abrasive valve.

•

The other hand grasps the manoeuvre handle and the extinguisher moves in place to the operation area.

•

Press the larger black handle to control the high-pressure water pump.

•

Press the smaller black handle to control the abrasive valve.

•

When pressing both handles you have both high-pressure water and abrasive for cutting or piercing a hole, and for cooling and/or extinguishing a fire.

4.2.2 Termination of Cutting or Extinguishing Operation •

The hand lance has a dead man’s handle. Release the handles and everything stops.

•

Push the on/off button and the lance is secured.

•

After using the extinguisher point the nozzle down into the ground beside of you, never against a human being.

NB! Always let the water run for a sufficient time to clear all lines of abrasive. Normally it takes 25 sec (with 100 meter (328 ft) hose) to clear the lines.

4.3 Operation with the Platform Lance For operation with the platform lance:

4.3.1 Start •

Check the platform lance and its connections. Check also the rotation unit with its nozzle and nozzle holder (check if the right cutting distance are adjusted). Keep clear of the lance when unfolding it.

•

Check the connections of the hydraulic hoses and hydraulic valves. Figure 4.2 Platform lance

•

Start the high-pressure water pump with the switch on the control desk.

•

Move the lance in operational position with the controls on the control box.

•

Open the abrasive valve with the switch, wait until the beam goes through the roof (or through the element that will be cut).

•

Start the rotation engine for clockwise cutting.

•

Adjust the cutting speed by the speed valve (the counter clockwise speed is always constant full speed).

4.3.2 Stop •

Stop the rotation.

•

Close the pump and the abrasive valve with the switch.

NB: Don’t forget to rinse the abrasive out of the hose after use.

4.4 Operation with the Cold Tap 4.4.1 Start •

Make sure the water mixed with the contents of the cutting object not causes a hazardous situation.

•

Attach the Cold Tap on the tank with glue and/or fixating band, according to separate instructions. If necessary make a pressure test of the fixation.

•

•

Switch to manual on the Cobra’s control panel.

•

Start the pump and the abrasive.

Wait until you with certainty know the beam has gone thru the cutting object’s surface.

•

Start the rotation engine for clockwise cutting. Rotate an orbit.

•


4.4.2 Termination of the Operation •

Stop the pump and the rotation.

•

Drain the object.


4.5 Cutting Frame 4.5.1 Start •

Connect Abrasive hose. Hydraulic hose and control valve.

•

Switch to manual on the Cobra’s control panel.

•

Start the pump and the abrasive.

•

Wait until you with certainty know the beam has gone thru the cutting object.

Start the rotation engine for clockwise cutting. Rotate an orbit.

4.5.2 Termination of the Operation •

Stop the pump and the rotation.

5. CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS I most cases the best extinguishing point of view is to quickly puncture the fire room with the cutting extinguisher and thereafter continuing to flush water. Sometimes is it necessary to puncture on more places, especially in a hidden fire in a tier of beams. Cutting can also be used for e.g. clearing work. This section gives you cutting instructions and some useful tips.

5.1 Safety 5.1.1 Personal Safety The hand lance has a dead man’s handle and a stop button on the radio transmitter. Manage the lance with respect, never point it against a human being and always secure it with the stop button after use. Clothing: approved water-blasting suit or a regular fireman suit, non-skid boots and hardhat with face shield visor and/or goggles.

5.1.2 Other Persons Safety The safety distance is 10 metre (33 ft) for unprotected personnel and 5 metre (16 ft) for protected personnel. Make sure that the spectators are standing behind you and wearing safety goggles. If there is any risk that somebody are standing e.g. behind a door in a fire room, cut the hole at the top of the door, because the smoke from the fire force the person to be close to the floor.

5.2 Hand Lance The hand lance is one of the tools that are used for cutting and extinguishing. The pressure against the shoulder is approximately 15 kg (33 lb). It has a radio to control the abrasive supply.

Cold Cut System AB The big handle controls the water pump and the little trigger controls the abrasive. The hand lance has an index that gives a possibility to controlled feed with optimal distance to the cutting object. If the index is unlocked you can cut a 42 cm (17 in) straight cut and a hole with the diameter of 18 cm (7 in). If the index is locked in the middle you can cut a round hole with the diameter of 6 cm (2 in).

5.3 Cutting 5.3.1 Instructions • •

• •

Pull out the stop button on the radio transmitter. Grasp the hand lance with one hand on the handle and the other on the index. Put the lance on the shoulder and put one of the points against the cutting object. Make sure that the nozzle is free from the cutting object. Start the water pump. Start the abrasive feed.

After a slight delay, which depends on the length of the hose 4.5 m/s (14.76 ft/s), arrives the abrasive to the nozzle and the cutting begins. Wait until the water jet has pierced thru the cutting object (the water mist disappears), before slowly start to move the nozzle. The principle is to let the water jet work on the edge of the cutting object. If you get a back spray of water, back and take new grip. Pausing the cutting operation remember that abrasive still exist in the line. Flush the abrasive out of the hose after use.

5.3.2 Useful Tips •

Thicker and harder material. Move the nozzle forward and backwards approximately, 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 in) to quickly pierce throw. The little cutting hole is filled with water and abrasive and therefore reduces the cutting effect significant. E.g. steel, concrete etc.

•

Homogeneous material is easier to cut than material with different hardness mixed, but there are no bigger problems, you just have to think a little.

•

Read the building and look after the weak point. E.g. doors, window frames, joints in brickwork, joints between prefabricated concrete block, attic gable etc.

•

What do you want to do with the water? (Cool down, cutting, fire gases, high pressure washing, blasting).

•

Can the beam break up free for best cold effect?

Remember to stand stabile and let the lance push naturally against the surface without any tensions. This is extremely important when cutting a circle, because you have to change grip during the circle motion. Standing right you can change the grip otherwise the rotation bolts. The risk that the point will lose its position on the surface reduces.

6. FAULT FINDING AND ACTION AGAINST COLD 6.1 Fault Finding 6.1.1 Low Water Pressure Is the water pressure too low? Check the following: •

Check if the pump connected to a source of water.

•

Check if the pump gets any water.

•

Check if water filter is choked-up.

•

Check that cylinder discharge valve 3 is closed.

•

Check that main line valve 1 open.

•

Check that nozzle not blocked or worn out.

6.1.2 No Pressure in the Abrasive Cylinder No pressure in the cylinder? Check the following: •

Check that discharge valve 3 is closed.

•

Check that cylinder main line valve 1 is opened.

•

Check that cylinder valve 2 is open.

•

Check that the two gauges are in operation.

6.1.3 No Abrasive at the Cutting Nozzle No abrasive coming at the cutting nozzle? Check the following: •

Check if the abrasive vessel is filled with abrasive.

•

Check if the abrasive valve is opening when activated.

•

Check the pressure on the gauge for abrasive cylinder pressure.

6.2 Action against Cold and Risk for Ice Forming in the System Beware of the extinguisher system should be protected against cold and frost! In case of severe cold the system can be prepared to handle transports and arrangement outdoors. How to fill up the antifreeze liquid: •
