Introduction Welcome to join the Chinese for Foreign Diplomats Course! The Course is specially designed for foreign diplomats by Hanban/ Confucius Institute Headquarters. It aims to help learners grasp the basic Chinese language skills for daily use in a short time of study. 137 participants from 39 embassies and 2 international organization have joined the course in three levels. Participants will be introduced to various daily life topics in 10 weeks and experience workshops of traditional Chinese culture. We set up a special column on our website (cffd.chinese. cn), and arrange tutors to help you in your after class studies. We hope that all the participants could achieve the elementary level of Chinese language communication with your and our efforts in and out the classroom. This is your Study Pack tailored for this course. All the teaching materials will be handed to you each time when you come to the lesson. You can pack up all the handouts and worksheets in this folder. By the end of this course, this is your own text and exercise book. Hope you will have a pleasant and fruitful learning experience with the Confucius Institute Headquarters!

周. How to address Chinese people? It is customary to address Chinese by their given name, using the title Miss, Mrs., or Mr. in front until people become good friends and know other's nicknames. There arealargerangeofofcialtitlesandformaladdressingformsindailyuse,especially occupation-linked titles such as doctor, professor, and mayor, etc. Younger members address elder members according to their formal roles in families such as elder brother, younger sister, cousin, sister-in-law and so forth. How do Chinese address each other? Mostly, Chinese address each other by their names. Taking a girl whose full name is Li Huilan for example, people may address her Li Huilan, Huilan, A Lan, or Xiaolan, even some (those who are elder than her or of the same age) may call her Xiao Li. If a man whose full name is Huang Yuepo, people may address his full name as Yuepo, or Lao Huang (usually those who are younger than him or of the same age), or Xiao Huang (usually those who are elder than him or of the same age).
