GREAT UNCLE BOB
My birthday is on 26th December. I 1 born in a small town in the north 2 England. I can remember my eighth birthday 3 2004 because it was the same day as the tsunami. I was opening my presents when my uncle phoned 4 tell us about the tsunami. I was scared when I saw the pictures 5 the big waves in Thailand on the television news.
My great uncle Bob died a few years ago . We liked him because he told 1 funny stories about when he was a boy. He was born in the 1940s and lived 2 his parents and his sister, Alice. Alice is my grandmother. When they were children, Bob and Alice had a pet rabbit and a dog. Bob said 3 dog was scared of the rabbit! When Bob was a child, his parents didn’t have a television 4 they had a radio. They had a piano and a record player, too. Bob and his friends learnt all the 5 on the records. His sister learnt to play the piano so she often played the songs on the piano and Bob 6 them. Bob started school 7 he was five. He walked to school every day. His first teacher was Miss Sharp. He liked her because she sometimes 8 the children to the park for lessons. When he was eleven, he went to a secondary school in the next town. His favourite subject was geography. He wanted to travel the world and visit different countries. When he left school, Bob got a job as a 9 reporter. He worked in a lot of really interesting countries and in some very dangerous places, too. He usually visited us when he was in England and he always 10 me fantastic presents. When I was four, he brought me a beautiful toy elephant from India.
I can remember a lot of things when I was eight. In my free time, I rode my bike and I started 6 learn judo. I liked swimming and skateboarding. 7 school, I was good at maths and science. I liked music 8 I wasn’t very good at it. My favourite books were the Harry Potter books 9 J. K. Rowling. When I was eight, I wanted to be 10 fire fighter. Now I want to work with computers. / 5 (1/2 point for each correct answer)

When I was nine
GREAT AUNT MARY
My birthday is on 14 August so it’s always during the school holidays. I never go 1 school on my birthday. I can remember my ninth birthday very well because our neighbour’s dog had three puppies that day. 2 the afternoon, my mum and I went 3 see the puppies. All three of them were black and very small. Our neighbour gave me 4 of the puppies for my birthday present. I called him ‘Blackie’ and he’s my best friend! I take him for 5 long walk every day.
My great aunt Mary died a few years ago . My sister and I always liked to visit her because we had a good laugh together. Mary loved going to the cinema. She knew the names of all the actors and she often saw the same film three or four times. When she was young, she wanted to be an actress 1 her parents said ‘No’. 2 she left school, Mary worked in a book shop. She was a good shop assistant 3 she was helpful and she knew a lot about books. One day, a young man came 4 the shop to buy a book by Agatha Christie. The young man’s name was George. He was a policeman and his f avourite stories were crime stories. George started 5 visit the book shop every week. Mary and George fell 6 love and married three years later.
When I was nine, my hobbies were swimming 6 playing chess. I usually played chess 7 some of my school friends. I had a lot of friends and I was very happy 8 school. My favourite subjects were sport, maths and English. I loved writing scary stories. Our teacher sometimes read one of my stories to the class. I of ten went to the cinema with my parents 9 Saturdays. I liked all the Walt Disney films. I wanted to be a teacher when I was eight or nine. Now I think I want to be a taxi driver 10 a bus driver.
Mary’s hobby was collecting record players. The 7 were old but they worked well. Mary had a large collection of records, too. She also loved buying clothes and she had ten big boxes full of clothes, hats 8 shoes. We liked to look in her boxes of clothes and find big hats and long dresses to wear. We played her records and danced to them for hours. Mary often told us the story of 9 of her favourite films. Then Mary, George, my sister and I acted the story for Mary’s neighbours. I don’t think we 10 very good but they always said we were fantastic!

It was getting colder on the mountain. John was lying in the snow. His dog, Bruno, pulled his arm 1 tried to wake him up, 2 John didn’t move. Bruno didn’t understand. Why didn’t John get up? John’s bag was open. Bruno picked it 3 with his teeth and took it to John. John’s mobile phone fell out. Bruno knew John spoke to his friends on this little black thing. Bruno stared at it but it didn’t do 4 . Then, he smelt it and touched it with his nose. The thing made a noise. Sally always checked her mobile phone after school. There was a message from her mum – she wanted Sally to get some milk on her way home. But what was this? A5 strange picture. It looked like a man’s head in the snow. Who was it? Where was he? Sally showed the photo to her friend, Jill. ‘There isn’t 6 snow here in town,’ Jill said, ‘ but there’s a lot on the mountain. I think there’s 7 wrong. Let’s go to the police station and show it to them.’ The police officer tried to call the number on Sally’s phone. Nobody answered but he heard a noise. Was it 8 dog? He used the computer to send the picture to another police station near the mountain.

Hi everybody!
Hi everybody!
Here’s my weekly blog for you – my best day and my worst day last week. Wednesday was a great day. Our school theatre group was in a competition 1 London. We do acting, dancing and singing at school. We practised three times a week for four months before 2 competition. Some of our parents made our costumes 3 our wigs. We performed part of a musical in the competition. We were all nervous before the competition but we didn’t make 4 mistakes and nobody forgot their lines. There 5 ten schools in the competition and we came second. We were really happy. The next day, we performed our musical at school for the other pupils and our families. It 6 a big success. My worst day was Saturday. It was a really unlucky day for me. In the morning, I went shopping with my mum. We wanted 7 buy a walkie-talkie watch for my younger brother’s birthday. We looked 8 a lot of watches and bought a really cool one. I know he’ll like it. We bought some food and then we got the bus home. When we got home, I wanted to show 9 watch to my dad. I went to get it out of my bag. But my bag wasn’t there. We looked everywhere for it. I think I left it on the bus. My brother’s walkie-talkie watch, my diary, my mobile phone, some money and some photos 10 my friends were in my bag. I was really unhappy. We phoned the bus station but my bag wasn’t there. They said they’ll phone us if they find it.

It was a beautiful day last Tuesday and so Jane decided to go sailing. She loved sailing and she was preparing for an important sailing competition. 1 the afternoon, it started raining. The wind got stronger and stronger. Jane knew she was near 2 very dangerous rocks, so she decided to turn the boat round and go back. Suddenly, a huge wave hit the boat. Jane slipped and fell. She hit her head on the side of 3 boat. Tony was in his room. He was looking at some of his pictures on his new digital camera. He wanted to give two or three of the 4 ones to his sister, Jane. The camera was her birthday present to him. Suddenly, he looked again. What was that? It wasn’t 5 of his pictures. He looked at it again. It was his sister’s boat. Some dolphins were swimming and 6 round the boat. Was anybody in the boat? Where was Jane? What did it mean? He ran downstairs 7 showed the picture to his parents. His mother tried to phone Jane on her mobile phone 8 there was no answer. That was unusual because Jane always took her mobile with her when she went sailing.

Skills It was getting dark and it was difficult for the men in the helicopter to see anything. Then, one of them shouted: ‘9 ! There’s a boat down there. The dolphins are pushing it away from the rocks’. The helicopter flew over the boat. There was a young woman in the boat. She wasn’t moving. Two days 10 , Tony and his parents took Jane home from hospital. She didn’t remember anything about her accident or the rescue. Who took the photo of the boat? How did the picture get into Tony’s camera? Nobody knew.

Hi everybody!
Hi everybody!
Here’s my weekly blog for you – my best day and my worst day last week. My best day 1 Saturday. My mum gave me some money because 2 cleaned her car and tidied my room. 3 the morning, I went shopping with two of my friends. I bought some black jeans – they’re really cool! I’d like to wear them at school but we can’t wear jeans. We have 4 wear school uniform! After I bought my jeans, we went to the electrical shop and looked at handheld computers. Some of them were fantastic but too expensive for me! 5 Saturday evening, we had a meal at a Spanish restaurant in North Street and I wore my new jeans. There were three guitarists performing in 6 restaurant. They played some really exciting Spanish music. My friend, Sam, 7 learning Spanish at school. He spoke to the waiters in Spanish and the waiters understood him! My worst day was Wednesday! I got 8 late so I didn’t have time for breakfast. I was hungry all day. We had two tests at school on Wednesday: biology 9 physics. I like biology and I’m quite good at it. I like physics, too, but I’m not very good at it. (We got our results yesterday – I got 60% for biology and 50% for physics.) On Wednesday evening, I wanted to watch the football match on television but there was a power cut for three hours. When the electricity came on again, it was time to 10 to bed.

Hi Chris B It was good to hear from you again. Did you do well i n your exams? We had exams last term but we haven’t got 2 this term. Italy was fantastic. I loved the country, the people, the food and the weather! We did a lot of sightseeing and then we had a week on the beach. Some of the shops were really cool. I bought a 3 Tshirt in bright orange and another one in dark blue. I’m going to go back again one day. Here are some photos. Suzanne

Presenter: Some of our listeners would like to know more about the actor David North and his sister, Linda, who is becoming one of our most popular authors. David’s full name is David John North and Linda’s full name is Linda Susan North. David was born on the 3rd of April 1978 in Paris. Linda was born two years later, on the 5th of May 1980, in London. David and Linda both liked school and they were good students. David’s favourite subject was art. His hobby was acting – he loved acting. When he left school, he studied at drama college. He made his first film in 2001. The film was a great success and David won an award for his acting. Linda’s favourite subject at school was English. She loved writing stories and she always wanted to write books for children. Linda studied English at university and she wrote her first book in her spare time. In 2004, she won a competition for children’s writers. David and Linda’s parents are both teachers. Their f ather, Tom, teaches art and their mother, Maria, teaches maths. Tom is American. He was born in 1948 in New York. Their mother, Maria, is French. She was born in 1951 in Paris. Tom and Maria met in 1968 when Tom was studying art in Paris. They got married in 1975 and moved to London. Modules 5 and 6 EXERCISE 1
1 Presenter: Welcome to Radio Sunshine. Today we’re talking about holidays. Let’s listen to Ann, talking about her holiday in Spain. Ann: Hi. I’m Ann. Last summer I had a great holiday. I went to Spain with my mum, my brother John and my best friend Linda. The weather was fantastic. I went to the beach every day with Linda and John. They like swimming in the sea but I don’t. I sat on the beach all the time. John and Linda went swimming every day. Mum doesn’t like the beach. She likes towns and cities. She went sightseeing and saw a lot of famous places. My dad didn’t come to Spain. He stayed at home because he was working during the summer. 2 Presenter: Pete went to France. Listen to his holiday story. Pete: Hello. My name’s Pete. Last year I had a holiday in France. I went with my parents and my girl friend Sue. We stayed at a campsite in the countryside. My dad’s hobby is fishing and he went fishing in the river near our campsite. He didn’t catch a lot of fish but he had a good time. Mum loves walking in the countryside and she went for a long walk every morning. I took my bike to France and I went cycling every day. I’m really into cycling. I thought my girl friend, Sue, liked cycling too, but she doesn’t. And she doesn’t like camping so she wasn’t very happy. She stayed at the campsite every day and read a lot of magazines and books. I don’t think she had a very good holiday because she stopped going out with me when we got back home. I’ve got a new girlfriend now and she likes cycling. 3 Presenter: Now let’s listen to Maria. She went to the seaside. Maria: Hello. My name’s Maria. Last July I stayed with my aunt and uncle and my cousin Anita. They live near the sea and they’re into water sports. Anita and I love surfing. We went surfing every day and we had a fantastic time. Anita is better than me at surfing and she helped me a lot. My uncle has got a boat and he went sailing every morning. My aunt tried snorkelling for the first time. She really liked it and she went snorkelling a lot on holiday. 4 Presenter: And last we have Mike. Mike went on an activity holiday. Mike: Hi, I’m Mike. I went on an activity holiday for a week with my mum, my dad and my sister Jane. We had a lot of fun. I played football every day and our team won a competition. My dad went horse-riding. His horse was huge but it was very friendly. Mum’s favourite sport is tennis and she played tennis a lot on holiday. My sister Jane wanted to learn to play volleyball. She played every day and got really good at it. She’s in the volleyball team at school now. EXERCISE 2

Can I help you? Yes, I’m looking for a top. What size are you? Medium. I’d like a bright colour – red or green perhaps. Tom: These yellow ones are nice, Anna. Anna: Yes, they are, but yellow doesn’t suit me. Oh, this red one is lovely! Yes, I’d like this one, please. How much is it? Assistant: The red top’s £8.

Anna: Right. I’d like some jeans, too. Assistant: The jeans are over there. Do you want a medium size? Anna Yes, that’s right. Oh, you’ve got a lot of fantastic colours – red, blue and my favourite colour – green! Yes, these are great! I’d like the green jeans, please. Are they £15? Assistant: No, these are cheaper. They’re £11. Anna: Oh, good. Assistant: That’s a total of … er … £19. Anna: Here you are. Assistant: Thank you. Anna: Do you want to look at the T-shirts and jackets, Tom? Tom: Mm … yes. Have you got any large T-shirts? Assistant: Yes, the large sizes are here. We’ve got red and blue. Tom: Er … not red for me. The blue ones look good … er … I think the light blue is a bit too light but I like the darker ones. Yes, I’d like this dark blue one, please. How much is it? Assistant: It was £30 but it’s only £15 now. Tom: £15. That’s great. And have you got any jackets in a large size? Assistant: Yes, these are the large sizes. We’ve got green, black and brown. Tom: I’ve got a black one … er … I don’t mind brown but … Anna: What about this green one? Tom: Yes, that’s really nice. How much is it? Assistant: It’s £20. Tom: Yes, I’d like the green one, please. Assistant: Fine. So that’s … er … £35 for the T-shirt and the jacket. Tom: Right. Here you are. Assistant: Thank you. Modules 7 and 8 EXERCISE 1
1 Hi, John. It’s Anna. I’m on the bus with Pete. I’m sorry, but we’re a bit late. There isn’t time for us to come to your house so let’s meet at the cinema at seven o’clock. Oh, and can you get our tickets please? The film starts at quarter past seven. Thanks. See you soon. Bye. 2 Hi, Auntie Sue! It’s Adam here. I’ve got some great news. I won a singing competition in London last night and somebody made a video of the competition – isn’t that cool? A lot of the people were nervous before they performed but I wasn’t. I really enjoyed it. I took three songs with me and I sang two of them. Would you like to come to our house this evening and watch the video? Let me know. Bye for now. 3 This is the Theatre Royal. We are sorry that the theatre is closed this week, but next week we have the fantastic musical ‘Billy Elliott’ here. Performances are every evening from Monday the 3rd of October to Saturday the 8th of October. Performances start at seven thirty and finish about quarter past ten. Tickets are £18 for adults and £15 for children under twelve. 4 This is the Tourist Information Office. Here is a list of events in town for this week. First, we have the famous Circus Oz in the park. They are here for one week only from the 1st to the 7th of July. There are two performances every day at three o’clock and seven thirty. Tickets are £7.50 for adults, £5.00 for children from four to ten and the circus is completely free for younger children. So you don’t have to pay for children under four! The second event this week is a concert ….
bright red jacket and a fantastic gold hat. And, of course, I use a black magic stick when I’m doing my tricks! Interviewer: And do you have to practise at home? Emma: Yes, that’s very important. We have to practise about two hours every day. I usually practise for an hour before I go to school and an hour when I come home. Interviewer:

Sue: Hi Tony, Sorry I’m late. I missed the bus. Tony : That’s all right, Sue. Are you all right? You look really tired. Sue: Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better! Tony: Well, you do look tired! Were you at the disco last night? Sue: No. I watched the late horror film on TV … it finished at half past one this morning. Did you watch it? Tony: No, I didn’t. I can’t stand horror films. I was playing cards at Tom’s. Sue: Oh, right. Anyway, have you done your shopping? Tony: Not all of it. I’ve bought a table lamp for my room … it’s made of wood and the lamp shade is dark blue and made of cotton. It’s really cool! Sue: Fantastic … and what’s in that big yellow bag? Tony: A white rug. It was quite expensive because it’s made of wool. I really like it. Sue: Is that for your room too? Tony: Yes. My walls are white and my carpet’s dark blue. I think the white rug’ll look great on the dark blue carpet. Sue: Yes … very cool! Tony: And I’ve bought two posters. The big one’s for my room … it’s a photo of three Skaters. They’re carrying their skateboards and they’ve got baggy jeans and bright sweat-shirts with hoods. One of them’s wearing a blue baseball cap – back to front, of course. And the smaller poster is for you! Sue: Oh, fantastic. Thanks. What’s on it? Tony: Well … which two sports do you like best? Sue: That’s easy. Ice hockey and motor racing. Tony: This is a poster of your favourite Formula One racing driver. Sue: Oh, that’s amazing! Thanks very much. Tony: That’s okay. Let’s go and look at the mobile phone shop … EXERCISE 2

Interviewer: … and now, let’s meet Emma Black. Emma’s thirteen and she wants to be a magician. So, Emma, tell me - when did you start doing magic tricks? Emma: When I was four. It was my fourth birthday and my uncle gave me a box of magic tricks. He showed me how to do some of the tricks and I did them for my mum and dad and my friends. Then, when I was six, I started going to classes for Young Magicians on Saturday mornings. Now I go to Young Magicians’ classes twice a week, on Monday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Interviewer: And what do you do at the classes? Emma: Well, the teachers are all really good magicians. They teach us a lot of magic tricks and help us practise them. We have to learn two new tricks every month and do them really well. Then, we perform our new tricks in front of the other students. And one of the teachers films us. When we watch the film later, we can see what we’re doing right and what we’re doing wrong. The teachers give us marks for each trick. The highest mark is fifteen. Last week, I got thirteen marks for my new card trick. Card tricks are my favourite tricks. Interviewer: Right. And do you dress up in special clothes when you perform your tricks? Emma: Oh yes. I love wearing my magician’s clothes. When I’m performing, I wear black trousers, a

Good morning. Exhibition Centre. Can I help you? Yes, I’d like some information about the next Exhibition, please. I think it’s called ‘Robots in the Twenty-First Century’. Yes, that’s right. When is it on? It starts on March 8th and it’s on for three weeks. Right. And how much are the tickets? For adults it’s £10, and for children aged five to sixteen it’s £6.50. Right … so it’s £6.50 for my fifteen-year-old? Yes. Have you got any children under five years old? Yes, we have, actually. Well, it’s free for children under five. Oh, great. And there’s a discount of ten percent for groups of twelve people or more. Really? Oh, that’s interesting. We’re a family of five but I know some of our friends want to come, too. I’ll ask them. It’d be fun to come together. Now, what time does the exhibition open, please? On Mondays to Saturdays it’s open from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon. On Sundays it closes earlier. On Sundays, it’s open from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon. Right … so that’s from ten until five on Mondays to Saturdays and from ten to four on Sundays. Thanks. And … can you tell me … what sort of robots are in the exhibition? Well, there are about five hundred robots, some are huge and some are really small. Half of them … two hundred and fifty … were made in Japan and the others were made in Britain and the USA. There’s a lot for visitors to do because they can use the robots … all the robots work. There are some really big ones … they help people at work, for example in factories and hospitals. Some of the smaller robots help people in the home. They can do boring jobs like washing and cleaning. And some of the robots are great fun because they play games with children. There’s something for all the family in the exhibition. Great! It’ll be a really interesting day out …thank you very much. Not at all. Bye Goodbye
