FROM TURKEY
In Turkey, the birthplace of oral literature, fairy tales and legends, children’s literature has, over the past few years, rapidly become a thriving industry with an increasing number of artists choosing to specialize in illustrating children’s books. This catalogue provides an overview of 30 such illustrators, who have each created their very own style out of a synthesis of traditional motives passed on from generation to generation on Anatolian soil, combining universal and contemporary lines. The catalogue includes examples of their work, contact information and a short CV of each artist.

ILLUSTRATORS OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS FROM TURKEY
TURKISH ILLUSTRATION ART NAZAN ERKMEN* The roots of Turkish book illustration goes back to Uygur Turks. The illustrated books found in Uygur cities in the 7th and 9th centuries prove that important work of art had been carried during that time. Art of miniature, book illustration, started during the 8th century. During the 13th century, Islamic libraries had the capacity of at least 100 thousand books. The libraries were so rich that one could see even “Dioscorides”; among these books. During the Abbasides period, “Kelile and Dimne”; was the most important illustrated book of that time. A gigantic work of art, titled “Makamat”; is covered with phantastic illustrations of animals and it is an example of one valuable illustrated book. In the 13th century in the time of Seljukians “Varaka and Gülşah”; was the first illustrated book in Anatolia. During the 13th century, the representation of events in those books turned into decoration rather than illustration. All the books were covered with illustrations during the 9th and 12th centuries as in “Book of Durrows”. Similarities of “Hiberno Nortumbrians”; schools are seen in these centuries. Here we can mention books of illustrations like“Kevakib el-Sabita”; “elHiyel el-Hendesiye” and “Kitab el-Haşaiş”; as valuable examples of illustrated books of the 12th century. However, calligraphy had more meaning than illustration. One important illustrated book of the 13th century is “El Hariri’s Makamat”; which is now in Paris Museum. Illustrators from foreign countries illustrated books during the 14th and 15th century; Bihzad is one of the important illustrators from Iran who illustrated poems of Sa’di and Nizami; during 1470 and 1520. The first publishing house was established by Said
Çelebi and İbrahim Müteferrika early in the 18th century. The beginning of Turkish graphic art starts with “Cihannüma”; in which the first illustrations of the maps took their places. Mıgırdıç of Galata and İbrahim of Tophane and Ahmet Kırimi were the first graphic artists. Turkish stamps had been illustrated during 1850s in litography technique in Darphan-i Amire, and the designers were known to be Abdülfettah and Tophaneli Agop and the ornamentations were made by Architect Muzaffer Begh. During the time of Tanzimat, animal stories were perfectly illustrated. Ebüziyya Tevfik was one of the most prominent illustrators of the time. It was hard for the children of that time to dream, because the illustrations lacked humour but they were well balanced with the texts. The illustrations were realist and realism became the popular model for illustrators during that time. In 1839, illustrators were in favor of art nouveau style. Models were taken from the west, the world of phantasy were inhibited to the children. After the the establishment of Democracy and The Turkish Republic in 1923, people began to read more. The renovation of Arabic letters, the return to Latin Alphabet was successfully adjusted to education. The change of the alphabet from Arabic letters to Latin alphabet made the Turkish citizen to act democratically, to decide for and vote for themselves. One of the most improtant Turkish painters, Ercüment Kalmık, also worked for children’s books and illustrated many important books for Turkish children.
03
Vedat Nedim Tör, established the most important Turkish children’s magazine “Doğan Kardeş”, which was very important both for the outcoming authors and illustrators of future. Vedat Nedim Tör, who has created this magazine for children has offered a free platform for Turkish writers and illustrators. Famous illustrators of Turkish history became well known with their illustrations published in this important children’s magazine. Some of the names who illustrated books for children were Mustafa Eremektar, Gevher Bozkurt, Selma Emiroğlu, Altan Erbulak, Güngör Kabakçıoğlu and many others. It is interesting that many important painters like Mustafa Aslıer, Nuri Abaç, Nevzat Akoral, Abidin Dino, Mürşide İçmeli, Kayhan Keskinok, Orhan Peker and Adnan Turani also illustrated for children and illustration art became precious in the history of children’s literature. The attempt to illustrate course books in artistic manner started with Nevide Gökaydın who was a professor in the art academy, many illustrators were inspired by her and so they started working for the text books. Artists like Tan and Deniz Oral worked for caricatures and animation for children for the first time in Turkish history. Firuz Aşkın, Tonguç Yaşar, Sururi, Şevki Çankaya, Bedri Koraman are some of the most important names of caricature, who also drew for childrens books. After 1950 the importance of publications for children were emphasized. Prof. Mürşide İçmeli, Can Göknil are very important names of Turkish illustrators during 1960s. Prof. İçmeli is known for her compositions, strong characteristic way of illustrating, and dark and light contrasts in her illustrations. Can Göknil wrote and illustrated her books and her books were both translated into Flemish and German. She is one of the few illustrators who illustrated to ages below 5. The other
important names in illustration art are Selçuk Demirel, Yıldız Cıbıroğlu, Ferruh Doğan, Feridun Oral, İsmail Kaya, Nazan Erkmen, Saadet Ceylan, Behiç Ak, Mustafa Delioğlu, Ender Dandul, Ferit Avcı, Osman Kehri, Sibel Demirtaş, Şahin Erkoçak, Ümit Öğmel and many others who represented their country in many biennials and concours abroad. *Prof. Nazan Erkmen Dean , Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts
