Step 2: Document th e PCs a. Check the computer name settings for each PC and make ad justments as necessar y. For each PC, select Star t and Contr o l Panel. Double-click the System icon, then click the Compu ter Name tab. Write down the computer name that is displayed following Full compu ter name: PC1 Name: PC2 Name:
b. Check to see if the two PCs have the same name. If they do, change the name of one PC by clicking the Chang e button, typing a new name in the Compu ter name f ield, then clicking OK. c.
Click OK to close the System Pr op er t ies window.

Step 3: Connect th e Eth er n et cable a. Use the Ether net cr ossover cable pr ovided by the instr uctor . Plug one end of the cable into the Ether net NIC of PC1. b.
Plug the other end of the cable into the Ether net NIC of PC2. As you inser t the cable, you should hear a click which indicates that the cable connector is pr operly inser ted into the por t.
Step 4: Verif y ph ysical con nectiv ity a.
After the Ether net cr ossover cable is connected to both PCs, take a close look at each Ether net por t. A light (usually gr een or amber) indicates that physical connectivity has been established between the two NICs. Tr y unplugging the cable f ro m one PC then r econnecting it to verif y that the light goes off then back on.
b. Go to the Contr o l Panel, double click the Network Connection s icon, and conf irm that the local ar ea connection is established. The following f igur e shows an active local ar ea connection. If physical connectivity pr oblems exist, you will see a r ed X over the Local Ar ea Connection icon with the wor ds Network cable un plug ged.
c.
If the Local Ar ea Connection does not indicate that it is connected, tr oubleshoot by r epeating Steps 3 and 4. You may also want to ask your instr uctor to conf irm that you ar e using an Ether net cr ossover cable.

Step 5: Conf i gu re IP sett ing s a. Conf igur e the logical addr esses for the two PCs so that they ar e able to communicate using TCP/IP. On one of the PCs, go to the Contr ol Panel, double click the Networ k Connections icon, and then right click the connected Local Ar ea Connection icon. Choose Pr oper ties f r om the pull-down menu. b. Using the scr oll bar in the Lo cal Area Connection Pr op er t ies window, scr oll down to highlight Int er n et Pr ot ocol (TCP/IP). Click the Pr op er t ies button.

Step 6: Verif y IP con nectiv ity between th e two PCs NOTE: To test TCP/IP connectivity between the PCs, Windows Fir ewall must be disabled tempor arily on both PCs. Windows Fir ewall should be r e-enabled after the tests have been completed. a.
On PC1, on the Windows XP desktop, click Star t . Fr om the Star t menu, select Contr o l Panel, and double-click Network Connection s.
b. Right-click the Local Ar ea Connection icon and select Pr op er t ies . Click the Ad vanced tab. Locate and click the Sett ing s button.

Make a note of whether the f ir ewall settings ar e EN ABLED (ON) for the Ether net por t or DISABLED (OFF) for the Ether net por t. ____________________________________________________

If the f ir ewall settings ar e enabled, click the Off (not recomm end ed) r adio button to disable the f ir ewall. The setting will be r e-enabled in a later step. Click OK in this dialog box and the following to apply this setting.
e. Now that the two PCs ar e physically connected and conf igur ed corr ectly with IP addr esses, we need to make sur e they communicate with each other . The ping command is a simple way to accomplish this task. The ping command is included with the Windows XP oper ating system. f.
On PC1, go to Star t , then Run . Type cmd, and then click OK. A Windows command pr ompt window will appear as shown in the f igur e below.
g.
At the > pr ompt, type ping 192.168.1.2 and pr ess Ent er . A successful ping will verif y the IP connectivity. It should pr oduce r esults similar to those shown in her e.
h. Repeat Steps 6a-6c on the second PC. The second PC will ping 192.168.1.1. i.
Close the Windows command pr ompt window on both PCs.

A PC can shar e its r esour ces with other PCs on the networ k. PCs with shar ed r esour ces should be visible thr ough My Network Places. On PC1, go to Star t , click My Network Places, and then click View work gr ou p compu ters in the left panel.
