This New Edition has been prepared by Subcommittee CPL/34/1. Following the publication of BS EN 60081, BS EN 60901, BS EN 61195 and BS EN 61199, this new edition of BS 1853-2 has been published to take into account the lamps, included in the previous edition, which are not covered by those European standards. It supersedes BS 1853-2:1979 which is withdrawn. BS 1853-1:1990 has been superseded by BS EN 60081:1994. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.
Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 10, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. © BSI 07-1999

1.1 Scope This British Standard is applicable to those fluorescent lamps which are used in the United Kingdom and which are not specified in BS EN 60081:1994, BS EN 60901:1994, BS EN 61195:1994 or BS EN 61199:1994. It specifies the characteristics of fluorescent lamps for general lighting service, which have pre-heated cathodes and which operate from 50 Hz a.c. mains with or without the aid of a starter and in association with ballasts conforming to BS EN 60920:1991 and BS EN 60921:1991.
1.2 References 1.2.1 Normative references This British Standard incorporates, by dated or undated reference, provisions from specific editions of other publications. These normative references are made at the appropriate places in the text and the cited publications are listed on the inside back cover. For dated references, only the edition cited applies; any subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of the cited publication apply to this British Standard only when incorporated in the reference by updating or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the cited publication applies, together with any amendments. 1.2.2 Informative references This British Standard refers to other publications that provide information or guidance. Editions of these publications current at the time of issue of this standard are listed on the inside back cover, but reference should be made to the latest editions.

2.1 Principles of layout of data sheets The numbering system for lamp data sheets is as follows: The first number represents the number of this publication “1853”. The second number represents the lamp data sheet number. The third number represents the edition of th e page of the data sheet. In cases where a data sheet has more than one page it is possible for the pages to have different edition numbers with the data sheet number remaining the same.
