INTRODUCTION A Historical Precedent...Transition to End Products In the early 1950s, the same demographic changes that caused a need for new neighborhoods and schools, created the beginnings of a market for air-cooled engines. Mass migration to new homes in urban and suburban areas and new demands for leisure time called for the work and time saving advantages of engine powered lawn and garden equipment. But a market without a product creates a problem that begs a solution. What was needed were lightweight, reliable, reasonablypriced engines that could be produced in high volumes without jeopardizing quality. In 1953, Briggs & Stratton developed and introduced the first aluminum alloy 4-Cycle engines mass-produced in the United States. Eventually, other manufacturers entered the field to find their share of the market. Whole new industries were spawned to build the products powered by these engines. Today Briggs & Stratton is the largest air-cooled engine manufacturer in the world . . . having built over 200 million aluminum alloy engines of various horsepower ratings to date. Therefore, we feel especially proud and responsible to provide educational support to schools with bona fide interests in air-cooled engine repair courses.
®
And the story continues. In the late 1990’s a significant shift occurred in Briggs & Stratton’s corporate business strategy due to changing global industry dynamics. Today, Briggs & Stratton is driven from being primarily an engine manufacturer to OEMs to a greater emphasis on end users, consumers and growth through acquisitions. Looking forward, Briggs & Stratton’s continued success will come from producing engines and also from integrating our engines into power product equipment, some branded Briggs & Stratton.
Briggs & Stratton Educational Philosophy and You But how does this relate directly to you? . . . your school? . . . your students?
Curriculum relevancy becomes increasingly important as school budgets are being squeezed by inflation and reduced tax revenues. Therefore, if you are considering introducing or expanding Air-Cooled Engine Technology and Repair Courses in your curriculum, we believe that you are on solid ground to do so.
Some examples include:
Engine powered products are household items in every community. Whether your students are interested in aircooled engines in order to better understand their own engine powered equipment, or as a vocational elective, Briggs & Stratton would like to assist you in your efforts.
• Linear and rotary motion (Physics)
Offering a program in small engines will help to reinforce many of the core educational subjects. Students will be exposed to Reading, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.
• How gasoline changes from a liquid to a vapor (Science) • How gasoline provides heat energy (Chemistry) • Torque as a measurement of force (Physics) • How to measure materials to within .001 of an inch (Mathematics) • How to use a repair manual (Reading) • And many more...
Briggs & Stratton is fully committed to assisting educational institutions willing to offer soundly structured courses, teaching Air-Cooled Engine Theory and Repair Techniques. Perhaps this commitment is best exemplified by the over 70,000 engines Briggs & Stratton has given to schools for use in their courses relating to Air-Cooled Engine Theory and Servicing. These standards are now global in nature. Revamping a program to reflect current technology can be expensive, particularly at a time when budget dollars seem to be receding. Not reacting to changes in technology leaves your students less prepared and therefore less attractive to industry as they enter the job market.
INTRODUCTION
All of these concepts can help the teacher and the school with a program that the students will enjoy learning, and help to meet the state and federal accountable learning standards.
The purpose of this catalog is to provide instructors with information about the Vocational Education Courses and Teaching Aids that Briggs & Stratton makes available. To find more information on the internet, go to

Air- Cooled Engine Industry Opportunities Each year there are more air-cooled engines produced in the United States than automobiles. Over 16,000,000 engines under 20 HP are manufactured annually. Most of these engines power a variety of outdoor power equipment from mowers to tillers to tractors. Millions more operate pumps, generators, small construction equipment, log splitters, truck refrigeration units . . . almost anything requiring portable power. A very conservative average engine life of five years, considering all applications, provides more appreciation of this gigantic engine population representing a potential market for service during any one year of 100,000,000 engines. But engine numbers are only part of the challenge. As engine technology advances and engine-powered equipment becomes more complex, the skill level of service technicians also needs to increase. These demands affect future service technicians produced by vocational and trade schools, and the schools, as well. We believe that you, the instructors, are drawn to this challenge.
Your Role . . . The total challenge calls for greater commitment to competency from all of us. Driven by modern technology and government emission regulations, today’s technician is a skilled individual. The image is no longer one of a part time mechanic operating out of his garage during the summer season. Today’s air-cooled engine repair business is a dual one...where parts and equipment sales are profit sources along with engine and outdoor power equipment repair services. Not only are many service technicians highly competent mechanics, but astute business managers as well. Bright young people who are your students today may well be our industry’s profit-minded service dealers tomorrow. Whether they are or not, depends, to some extent, upon you. As instructors, you may have opportunities to direct vocational school students to those courses that equip them for both facets of the air-cooled engine industry - product sales and service. At the very least, you can advise your students about the opportunities and challenges in this growing outdoor power equipment sales and service market. As is the case with most vocational courses, Air-Cooled Engine Theory and Repair courses are not designed to produce “finished” technicians. Their purpose is to provide a solid base which serves as a springboard into work situations which then provide on-the-job experience and growth. Additional training for these new employees, as well as experienced service technicians, is available from the engine and equipment manufacturers’ field and factory schools. These continuing education programs keep both new and experienced service technicians abreast of new engines, equipment and the latest repair techniques. The proliferation of equipment types and applications has provided the seasonal stability required to attract serious-minded people in even greater numbers to become service technicians. In air-cooled engine servicing, as in many other occupational pursuits, pay is dependent on skill, attitude, and to some extent, prevailing local labor rates. If you are not already aware of the respectability and stability of air-cooled engine repair as a full-time occupation, hopefully this catalog will provide the information you and your student may need. As instructors, you can serve them well by presenting the right perspective on the challenges offered by our industry and, you can do this in all honesty without hesitation. For those of you who are not born mechanics, or have been newly recruited to establish an air-cooled engine course at your school . . . you can become a more qualified instructor if you are willing to invest a little time and study in the necessary subjects.

CE9001 OHV Engine Training Kit ADVANCED KIT - Complete Curriculum for 20 students This complete course curriculum is refined from the Briggs & Stratton Authorized Field Service School, the most widely acclaimed small engine training program in the industry. Developed from years of training experience and built around a textbook written by the Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Department, you are assured a thorough, in-depth study of Briggs & Stratton engines. In addition to the curriculum, a 4 day Vo-Ed factory training course is included for your instructor at the Briggs & Stratton Customer Education Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (excluding transportation and lodging). Once trained with curriculum in place, the instructor will be able to provide a comprehensive and accurate small gasoline engine program for the student. It has been our experience that the number of hours specified for air-cooled engine training varies as much as the goals of each respective program. For this reason, a lesson plan is not included. It is relatively simple to construct a custom made program based on your needs from the textbook table of contents or your experiences at the instructor training session. For best results, instructors should have some air-cooled engine or automotive/motorcycle/marine engine experience. Industry advice, ongoing technical support, discounted parts, and engine purchases are available through the Integrated Distributors Network in North America, see back cover. Information such as parts look-up and service bulletins are available online at www.ThePowerPortal.com. The computer is no stranger to this industry. Included in this package is CE3060 Product Knowledge Computer Based Training (CBT) CD, an entry level program which identifies and defines external and internal engine components, a CD containing video and Power Point presentations, and outlines for the instructor to develop competence. Why Briggs & Stratton? You can’t find a more comprehensive small air-cooled engine course anywhere. The combination of textbooks, student workbooks, repair manuals and audio/visual training aids allows tremendous leeway in how to teach various subjects. The heavily illustrated textbook is the “why”, the repair manuals the “how” and the workbooks containing the student labs are the “reinforcement.” Please bear in mind that the instructor training offered includes the school and lunch each day. You will be responsible for transportation to and from Milwaukee as well as lodging and any incidental costs. Transportation from the hotel to Briggs & Stratton will be provided. (See page 27 for school dates and application.) Visit our website to view our list of educational opportunities.

TEXTBOOKS
TEACHING AIDS – TEXTBOOKS
Original Equipment Manufacturers produce repair manuals which supply the “how-to” for most repair jobs. Few industry or outside publications provide much in the way of “why”. Small Engines concentrates on the theory of operation relating to all engine systems. Both air-cooled and water-cooled engines are covered. Small Engines is supported by a Student Workbook containing review questions on three different levels addressing the skills and acquired knowledge of beginners, intermediate students and those with advanced capabilities. The Small Engines Workbook Answer Key contains the answers to the lessons provided in the Student Workbook.
274041 Small Engine Care & Repair Book For the novice – a step-by-step guide to small engine care and repair. This full color book is 128 pages and includes over 300 color photos and easy-to-follow instructions. Concepts are introduced that apply to virtually every small engine making this appealing to a very broad audience. It offers consumers a stepby-step guide for saving money through preventive maintenance and do-it-yourself repair and includes a troubleshooting section to easily diagnose common small engine problems. Small Engine Care & Repair features introductory projects that require no prior knowledge, as well as advanced projects for the experienced repair person.
CE8034 Major Engine Failure Analysis Book This book details the five major causes of engine failures. A thorough discussion of the “how and why” of each failure along with supporting diagrams and photographs assist the technician in determining engine failures.
See pages 32 and 33 for ordering and pricing.

Video Cassettes/DVD Theory Programs Video cassette programs are available at a nominal charge. While most of these video programs have been developed for service dealer schools, these programs can also serve the needs of students. All video programs are recorded on VHS 1/2" format cassettes.
CE3070 4 - Cycle Theory Video This video (6 minutes) is the foundation of understanding how an engine operates and is the cornerstone of a small engine class. Basic 4-Cycle theory is described through use of high-end computer generated graphics. This is a must have item!
CE3013 Theories of Operation – Volume 1 Video This is a series of four distinct programs (64 minutes) looped onto a single video cassette. These selections cover four basic topics which are vital to understanding the operation of a 4-Cycle engine. The four programs are: Carburetor Theory, Valve Theory and Repair Procedures, Governor Theory and Troubleshooting, and Electrical System (Alternator Theory).
16
This serves as a companion video (72 minutes) to Theories of Operation - Volume 1…it contains four advanced topics on a single video cassette. Horsepower and Torque: it explains torque as a rotational force and horsepower as a calculation of work performed. Advanced Carburetion Theory: a brief review of theory and basic carburetor physics followed by state-of-theart computer animated graphics. Troubleshooting Carburetor Systems: carburetor problems are divided into three main categories…starting problems, performance problems and leakage. Examples, tests and repairs are presented as well as “Tricksof-the-Trade”. Dynamics of Engine Failure is the fourth topic: see explanation below CE3019.
CE3019 Dynamics of Engine Failure Video Produced in 3-D graphics and animation, this video (23 minutes) provides the “why” behind major engine failures analysis. Covered in detail are the 5 major failures: Abrasive Ingestion, Insufficient Lubrication, Overheating, Overspeeding and Breakage. The material is presented to assemble the evidence of a failure, what’s important to consider, and why the failure occurred. This information is not commonly found in most textbooks…these failures represent the real world in an everyday service shop.
CE3097 Water Pump & Pressure Washer Theory & Troubleshooting DVD
Video Cassettes/DVD Programs
CE3029 Theories of Operation – Volume 2 Video
This DVD (42 minutes) is an excellent presentation on the operational theory of water pumps and pressure washers. Various principles of physics, liquids, and creating pressure differentials are explained in making this equipment work. 3-D and animation graphics clearly document the coordination of all the operating systems. Understanding the principles of operation, as well as basic equipment troubleshooting is covered. Maintenance and parts nomenclature are also included.

Vo-Ed Instructors Factory Service Training Each summer Briggs & Stratton conducts Factory Service Training for Vo-Ed Instructors. These schools cover not only the operation and theory behind Briggs & Stratton air-cooled engines, but also offer specific insights in developing teaching aids such as carburetor cut-aways, and other ideas. There are a number of additional educational opportunities available to instructors of air-cooled gasoline engine courses. These schools are conducted at different times during the year.
Advanced Engine Technology (Dealer Technicians or Advanced Vo-Ed Instructors) - 4 Days Major engine systems, carburetion, ignition, compression and lubrication are explored in the kind of detail that satisfies those that are driven by a yearning to know how a Briggs & Stratton engine really works. You’ll start your week with a bang by destroying a brand new engine and springboard straight into failure analysis. The “repair” process carries you through individual engine systems. You’ll stop at carburetors for half a day and explore them in detail. A hands-on approach is used and you’ll leave able to understand and identify all the circuits found in modern day carburetors. Fuels and emissions are reviewed in detail. An indepth troubleshooting exercise follows using running engines with various “bugs.” Another half day is devoted to electrical components, charging, ignition and starting systems. After a thorough review of electricity and electrical terms, charging systems are identified, defined and actually tested for output on running engines. Next, you’ll delve into ignition system history, theory and troubleshooting. Other topics covered are surface finishes, measurements, compression components and more. You’ll get a chance to practice what you’ve experienced. (see page 27 for course application)
22
(Dealer Technicians or Advanced Vo-Ed Instructors) - 4 Days With an ever increasing volume of electric start engines equipped with alternators and other electrical devices being built today, a thorough knowledge of systematic electrical troubleshooting is required. The first goal of this program is to remove the “FEAR” of electrical components and the servicing of electrical systems. Many opportunities for service work are lost because a technician lacks electrical troubleshooting experience and/or has a built-in fear of tackling electrical problems. After learning the facts about electricity, we move on to a comprehensive, stair step approach to learning systematic troubleshooting by understanding “why” and “how” a component works. Then you move on to the actual function with hands-on learning. The technician will gain confidence and increase their ability to do systematic troubleshooting following the step-by-step approach to learning. Many hours of valuable hands-on training will transform what appears to be very complicated systems into a series of very manageable troubleshooting exercises. Electrical systems will no longer be the mysterious black hole they once appeared to be. For a change of pace, the second part of this program is spent on fuels and carburetion. Fuels, emissions and carburetor theory are discussed in depth. Specific carburetors representing the major engine families will be disassembled and studied, including the newer 2-barrel found on 20 HP Vanguard™ V-Twin engines. This exercise is slanted towards understanding and troubleshooting fuel systems. (see page 27 for course application)

23
Vo-Ed Teachers Training (Beginner Vo-Ed Instructors) - 4 Days We begin with an introduction to the Outdoor Power Equipment industry and progress through parts and replacement engine identification and repair manual reviews. Engine systems from A to Z including governors, carburetion, compression, ignition and lubrication are discussed in detail and in a “hands-on” fashion wherever possible. You’ll spend a day on carburetion and electrical systems tracing circuits using up-to-date training techniques. Dynamic testing and troubleshooting is provided for reinforcement. Learn how to make your own “see through” training aids in the carburetor cut-away lab so your students will understand the concept. Theory is strengthened by workshop labs. A complete engine tear down and reassembly integrates the how-it-works with the why-it-works. You’ll also benefit from rewind starter servicing and you’ll get to try your hand at valve, valve guide and valve seat repair. Your work will be tested when you’re done, so pay attention! Keep abreast of all the latest information. While you’re here, sign your facility up as a Registered Vo-Ed Center, receive your own ID number and get on our mailing list for special offers on instructional materials. Enrollment is limited – act immediately by completing the application found on page 27. You will be notified directly by Briggs & Stratton’s Customer Education Department upon acceptance.
