Return and t ransformation Beat Fur rer’s chamber music, 1991–2011
Beat Furrer’s art of composition is shortly after his music theatre work like an exploration of fundamental Wüstenbuch. principles, an exploration that is Aer for clarinet, cello and piano made accessible in the work and (1991) and Lied for violin and piano through the act of hearing it. the material is the cold; the thin and the sagging on the other hand are warmth … everything comes from air and everything dissolves into it again” (Simplicius, writing about Anaximenes). This description could almost be the actual scenario of Aer . The clarinet – an instrument of the air – forms a sonorous continuum, crossing broad spaces in swift motion and a well-nigh unending line. The cello and piano add individual, selective, often noiselike interjections, using heterogenous playing techniques, as if a highly varied set of instruments were to place sonic events in different rooms. In
music freezes at a “point of solidification”. First the clarinet line disappears in repeated trills in its highest register, from which a mechanical, metallic tapping takes over that is played by the piano on the damped e’’’ string, then events become ever scarcer. In the second part, the aggregate states appear, but organised differently. Multiphonics on the clarinet lead “very calmly” into a final section that first brings eruptions with it, but then these become scarcer and there is a gentle echo as if the whole were dissipated into the air. The three early works “Bilder der Erstarrung” (“Pictures of torpor”) can be
23
decreasing motion to a point of stasis. In Lied (“Song”), Beat Furrer has the instruments “freeze” at the end of a phrase; Aer leads us to a point of stasis, at which a second part then begins. And in his commentary to …cold and calm and moving for flute, harp and string trio (1992) we ultimately find that relationship of time and movement thematized that is explored in musical terms: “We wander as listeners through four opening lines of a Petrarch sonnet – Pictures of torpor – as they spiral off, becoming ever more distant from an imaginary centre”, says Furrer. “Movement here means shifting perspectives, a con-
alter for the listener”. The Petrarch sonnet in question is the famous “Hor che’l ciel, e la terra, e’l vento tace” (“Now, where heavens, earth and wind are silent”) that Claudio Monteverdi set as a madrigal using frozen, darkly coloured chords. These verses paint a picture of nature in stasis that is perceived by the poetic subject. And there is “waiting, thinking, burning, weeping” – “Veglio, penso, ardo, piango” runs the fifth line. The fact that Furrer is concerned with a musical state of stasis is also alluded to in the title: “…cold and calm and moving” are the hands of a young woman who is Giacomo Joyce’s object of
24
for example in the “hesitant”, broadly spaced chords that are “sprinkled” by the harp at the beginning, then in furious, toneless whispering embellishments in the strings and in the broad, gentle melodic lines of the flute. There is a kind of horizontal axis that runs through the work and is formed by a pulsating g in the harp that is countered by broad leaps in the left hand that are an expressive embellishment of the flute. The series of musical verses plays with return and transformation, a process comprising ever newly illuminated variants in evernew groupings. At the core of the work is a series of “extremely slow”
tension-laden context of repetition and variation, a process is initiated in which we repeatedly hear things anew. Lied is one of the highly rare cases in which Beat Furrer formulates a clear link to the music of another composer – in this case to Schubert. “Violin and piano do not find any common metre – they approach each other and move away again in slightly different tempi. Sounds seem to possess a memory – the opening motive of Schubert’s song Auf dem Flusse (Winterreise ) seems audible from a distance, yet without actually being quoted”. The two instruments are notated in different
25
they indeed sound like remin iscences of what has passed, what is lost. In the repetitive, oscillating events of this piece, minute changes such as harmonic shifts or articulatory gradations become sensations. In the repetition of these particles in the diff use metre of the different layers of sound, however, one gets the impression of an unending circling in a time that has frozen, as if a memory of an unending music were here being sung, as if the medium of music, of time, were itself the topic. The link between the voice and the flute is something that can be traced through Beat Furrer’s oeuvre over
Furrer combines a poem from the late 1950s, “Etwas wie Küsten kleefarben und Gewahrsam der Meere” (“Something like the coast, clover-green and safekeeping of the seas”) with a famous title of the poet: “Arie auf tönernen Füssen” was the title of a radio play that she wrote in 1998. In their acts of breathing, in noisy plosive sounds and melodic clichés, voice and instrument meet, interlock, and at times are meant to be barely indistinguishable from each other. The flute has its own manner of notation that is divided up into “event layers”: the mouth and fingers have one system each, and the playing of the
26
finger pads. Notes that are blown in the ordinary manner are also varied using different mouthpieces, while other levels are added by means of overblowing. The voice correspondingly acts in the intermediary realm between whispering and voiced speech. Mayröcker’s text (see cover page 29) interlocks natural images and states in a fullness of evocative moments; it is a continuous pictorial description of a state of being. This process of advancing slowly through language – a process of observing and telling a story without the object of it ever becoming tangible – brings Furrer’s piece to life.
the speech-sounds and ultimately institutes regular patterns. “I wanted to create a musical space for Mayröcker’s suggestive theatrical scenery, without destroying the semantics of the text. In the process of this there are different levels of stylisation, ranging from speaking to elementary noise almost up to a point of near-song; these levels meet in the articulation of the flute”. The subtle gradations of these transitional situations in sound, of an unstable sonority in both voice and instrument, is something that Beat Furrer pursues further in several compositions, culminating in his “theatre for the ears” FAMA , in whose sixth scene
27
Furrer’s music theatre. He develops new structures in order to bring what is isolated and what is continuous (thus present and past – the sum of all that has been) into a relationship with each other. His most recent work for music theatre, Wüstenbuch , is an extreme example of this tendency. It is nothing less than a compositional engagement with stasis – and thus links up with the “pictures of torpor” of his early years. After Wüstenbuch there is a break; his Study for piano (2011) and Enigma V for chorus a cappella (2012) are works that are once again concerned with the creation of processes. Form and likeness, repetition
and effigies. “One shall see forms and likenesses of men and animals that follow these animals and men wherever they flee”, writes Leonardo. In Study for piano , Furrer draws line figures in extreme registers, overlaying them in increasingly complex textures. Regular repetition and distortion are two principles that are here contrasted with the espressivo . Content becomes technique, becomes structure – developed further from one work to the next.
