Introduction
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Aslaam-o-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahee Wa Barakatuhu, May Allah (s.w.a.’s) Peace and Blessing be upon you all. Welcome to My Four Rakaat Salah Book in the Salah (Namaz) in Steps Guide series. Every Muslim (male) and Muslima (female) needs to know how to pray Salah (Namaz) as this is Farz (Obligatory) on every one without any exceptions and knowing how to pray four rakaat salahs which is a very import ant part of any Muslim’s life because it is a part of many salahs that we have to pray every day. Many people have not been able to learn how to perform salah due to various reasons. This brief step by step guide is to help my brothers and sisters in Islam to learn and practice this very important act of worship. I have used my knowledge from Sunni school of thought, in particular, from the perspect ive of Imam Abu Hanifa. Therefore, you may find that there are some small variation’s in the pract ice of Salah depending upon which scholar or school of thought you follow. A simplified step by step approach has been used so that it becomes an easy and an enjoyable process to learn for all Muslims, inshallah. I have used various resources in order to produce this guide for which I am grat eful and ask Allah (s.w.a.) to bless each and everyone for their contribution to this Salah (Namaz) in Easy Steps Guide Series, Ameen. The glory of all this work is Allah ( s.w.a.’s) and any omissions or oversight are mine alone. May Allah (s.w.a.) make this an easy process for us all, Inshallah (God Willing), to both learn how to pray correctly and then to practice regularly. I ask for forgiveness for any oversights or omissions on my part which I may have made unknowingly from both my learned colleagues and Allah (s.w.a.). This Salah (Namaz) Guide is for the benefit of numerous brothers and sisters who do not know either Arabic and/or have no access to a learned teacher who can help them to learn and fulfil their obligatory duty and thus gain many blessings from Allah (s.w.a.) for honouring their obligatory prayers and duty as practicing Muslims. Also as you will know that as you start to learn something new it will take some effort and time to get the new knowledge and acquire the new skills necessary for success. Therefore be patient with yourself and allow your time for the body to get used to the new movements. For a young child or a very agile and fit perso n the movements will be very easy or easier than that say someone of my age who has to get used to new movements. I would also need to take my time and do t he best that I can. I strongly recommend that you do not be too hard on yourselves in this worthy cause of learning how to pray. The Bismillah has been recited for every sura for ease of learning and extra swab (pronounced “thawaab”). I have tried to make the process as easy as possible. I wish you all the best in your efforts and make dua that Allah (s.w.a.) blesses every little effort that you are making and that He makes the learning and Practice as easy as possible for you, Ameen.

The 4 Rakaat Salah There are two kinds of sunnat salah and a farz salah which has four (4) rakaats in it. The sunnat salahs are “Muakada”, to be prayed always and “Ghairmuakada” to be prayed wherever possible. The Sunnat Ghairmuakada should also be prayed as Sunnat Muakada but you don’t get any gunaa or sins for not praying but you get extra swab (pronounced as “thawab”) for praying! (a)
4 Rakaats Sunnat Salah Muakada This is sunnat salah which Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) always read. Hence, we should always read this as well. Make the niyat or intention, “I am praying 4 rakaat sunnat muakada for x salah, facing the kabbah for the sake of Allah (s.w.a.)”

onto their chest placing the right hand over t he left. Stand up straight and start to read the sana, which is:
“Sub-haana-kal-laa-hum-ma-wa-bee-hamdee-ka wata bara kassmo- ka wa ta aalaa Jado ka wa la-illaha-ghay-ruka” which means “Glory unto you, O Allah! All Praise unto you. Blessed is Your Name and Most High is Your Majesty. There is none worthy of worship but You”.

Then recite the Ta ow-wuz still standing in the same position. A-oozu Bil-laahi Minash-shaitaa-nirra-jeem which means “I seek protection of Allah from Shaitaan, t he accursed”. Then Recite Sura Fatiha below which is a very important of every unit (rakaat) of Salah:
Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful Al-Hamdo-Lillahee-Rabbil-Aalameen All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds Arramaan-Nirraheem The Beneficent, Most Merciful Maalikee-Yowmiddeen Master of the Day of Judgement Iyaaka-Nabaduu You Alone we Worship Wa-Iyaaka-Nasta-Een And You Alone we ask for Help Ihdhee-Nas-Seeratal-Musta-Qeem Show us the Right Path Seerat-Talazeena-Annamta-Alaihim The path of those You have favoured Gharil-Maghdoobe- Alaihim Not the Path of those who earn Your anger Waladh-dhaleen Not the path of those who go astray Then say “Ameen” softly.
After reciting the above sura then we need to recite another sura which is of three ayats (sentences) or longer. As we are learning we can choose a sura which is both short and easy to learn. This sura can be used for all of the salah where an additional sura is a required reading. For the purpose of ease ©2008 M Nadeem Zafar, (BSc Hons), Cert Ed, mp.NLP. My Lord, make me steadfast in Salah and also my descendents; our Lord and accept my prayer. Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the Believers on t he Day of Judgement. Now we need to say salaam to complete the two units / rakaats of salah. That is “ Aslaam-o-Alaikum-Wa Rehmatullah” meaning “may the Peace and Blessing be Upon You” turning your head first to the right in line with your right shoulder as if you are talking to someone. Then repeat this by turning your head to the left in line with your left shoulder. You are indeed talking to someone; t here are two angels on each shoulder recording all your good and bad deeds.
Your Four Rakaats Sunnat Muakada Salah has now been completed. Well done you have done really well! (b)
4 Rakaats Sunnat Salah Ghairmuakada
This is a Sunnat Salah which Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) sometimes read and some times he did not. Therefore, we get extra blessings and swab (pronounced as “thawab”) for reading this part of the Salah for Asar and Isha but if we do not we do not get any ghuna or acquire sins in our account to be answered to on the Day of Judgement, Inshallah. The main difference with the Muakada Sunnat salah we have discussed earlier is that after completing the second rakaat of the salah we read Darood Ibraheemi and the Dua’ Rabbi Jalni as well before we rd stand up to start the 3 Rakaat of the salah. Form your niyat or intention before we start. “I am praying 4 rakaat sala sunnat ghairmuakada facing the kabbah for the sake of Allah (s.w.a.)” 1.
