NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
R
eminisce Smith, better known as Remy Ma, was born in the Castle Hill sector of Bronx, NY. Formerly known as a member of the rap group Terror Squad, some of you may remember her most from her killer verse on the group’s hit song “Lean Back” from the group’s 2004 release True Story. Later in life, upon her recent release from a six year prison term, the award-winning female rapper immediately hit the studio in an effort to maintain her top-tier MC status by joining forces with the infamous producer, DJ Khaled. I had a chance to meet with Remy, and not only spend a day shooting her for a spread, but also to chitchat about love, life, being a fellow Gemini, and how we deal with the haters. Enjoy as Black Men gives you the best men’s magazine in the game and as usual. Tantalize your eyes with hot images of Remy, as well as some the hottest girls from the modeling, music and reality TV world—all shot in beautiful Miami, FL. Black Men proudly introduces you to our Miami Edition.
Best,
Marcus Blassingame Editor-In-Chief

RESUME Magazine: Mixed, AADimes, Thick, Ggurls, WizDailyDose. com Film: Girl on girl XXX movie with adult star, Sara Jay. Cultures in Miami? Miami is just a huge melting pot. I’ve never seen every Hispanic culture in one place until moving here [laughs]. I learned a lot about different ethnicities from my years in Miami. I love trying different food, so that’s probably the best part of Miami having so many cultures. Do you attend Art Basel? I love Art Basel! I try to attend every year. Art is a beautiful way of expressing yourself. Biggest event/shows/ holidays in Miami? Unfortunately, holidays aren’t much celebrated here in Miami. I think it’s because the weather never changes [laughs]. It’s always hot and sunny, so you don’t really feel the holiday seasons [laughs] as you would up north. Art Basel and WMC (Winter Music Fest) and ULTRA are the big events people plan for down here. Best place to vacation in Florida? Best place to vacation in Florida is Miami, of course! Beautiful women, warm weather and a crazy neverending nightlife. Second best would have to be Orlando for Disney World—I’m just a kid at heart [laughs]. How do you plan on actively networking with Black Men to build your presence in the market, share your network with the company and make your appearance in the magazine a mutually valuable moment and experience? Social media is such a big networking tool these days. I definitely can’t wait to shoot more with the magazine and share snippets of my photos on Instagram and things of that sort. Marcus is a very well know person in the modeling industry and I’m sure attending events for the magazine will be great for me to meet people and give more people the chance to see me since I’m still a fresh face. 10 BlackMenDigital.com

I’ve been flagged down and made about seven accounts so far [laughs]. Methods to attract followers? Honestly, I’m just myself. I’m an adult entertainer, so of course I’m always being sexy and sex will forever sell as long as it comes natural to a woman. People can tell when you’re trying too hard or if it’s just in you, I believe. I also always make sure I talk back to people on social networks. No matter how many followers I get that will never change. I love talking to my fans and supporters. Wildest comment received? [ Laughs]. Seriously? I’ve gotten so many outrageously bizarre comments it’s hard to say what’s the wildest. I get all types of stuff—from people saying they would lick me head to toe sticky and sweaty, to the crazy requests of my hand-inmarriage [laughs]. People say all types of stuff online. Gia Simone What type of cultures can you find in Miami? I’m not good with recognizing where people are from, however, working in a nightclub I run into so many different races from all over. Miami is one big melting pot of cultures and I love it! Do you attend Art Basel? No, I’ve never been. What are the biggest events, shows and holidays to plan for in Miami? Red Eye, Carnival, Memorial Day Weekend, Sweat Heat and, of course, when the Miami Heat go to the finals. What Miami based magazine do you aspire to appear in? I’m honestly not familiar with any that are Miami based. What’s the best place to vacation in Miami and or in Florida? South Beach can be nice on the right weekend. Las Olas In Fort Lauderdale is really nice, as well as Midtown. Social Network? Instagram of course is my number one source of recognition. My Facebook following are my day one supporters of family and friends. Word Of Mouth? What type of cultures can you find in Miami? You can find so many different and interesting cultures in Miami. It is definitely a hub for many Latin cultures, though I would say Cuba is the biggest influencer. The mixture of people and nationalities is incredible. It’s what makes Miami so vibrant, so alive. Do you attend Art Basel? Yes! Art Basel is something very special. Going there is like stepping into a different dimension. I am very artistic, so it was an incredible experience for me. However, art can be very demanding, and in order to truly understand it, you must be willing to recognize a lot of historical references. What are the biggest events, shows and holidays to plan for in Miami? There are so many fun events all year-round. Some of my favorites include, Miami Fashion Week, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, and The Grove Food & Wine Festival. What Miami based magazine do you aspire to appear in? I wouldn’t mind showing my face in 944 Miami and Miami Shoot magazine. 28

What type of cultures can you find in Miami? I wish I were more familiar with the cultures of Miami. Whenever I travel I typically migrate to the artistically inclined crowd, which was my case in Miami this summer. Hopefully, next time I visit I will be able to experience more of what Florida has to offer. Do you attend Art Basel? I haven’t had the opportunity to attend Art Basel yet; however, this summer I went to Art Walk in Miami, and I loved it. There were lots of cultured people with an appreciation for something bigger than themselves. There was street art, sophisticated sculptures, and group dancing on the sidewalk. It was truly amazing. Tell us about your model coaching? I do on-set model coaching during productions teaching posing, expression, how to utilize your lighting sources, and my favorite being action shots and dance posing. We all have fun with it, but I really love it when the models see their images and are blown away. It’s a wonderful feeling. We hear you are a fine artist. What type of art do you do? I draw charcoal portraits, mostly as a hobby. I consider my style of modeling a fine art, as well. For me, it’s all about catching emotions, the unforgettable moments. Life isn’t posed per frame, so I like to keep it natural and move fluidly, then let the camera catch what it catches. What are your thoughts of dating within your industry? People tend to have a problem with overthinking love. There is no logic when it comes to matters of the heart. I’m currently dating within the industry and it isn’t just working, it’s flourishing. I love who I love and the taboo of industry dating is nonexistent for me. What Miami based magazine do you aspire to appear in? Ocean Drive is a high-end magazine I’d love to be featured in—hopefully, in the near future. How do you plan on actively networking with mag to build your presence in the market, share your network with the company and make your appearance in the magazine a mutually valuable moment and experience? I’ve worked full circle with Black Men. I’ve done both sexy and fashion spreads. I’ve coached several of the models in posing. I’ve done hair and makeup on some sets, and I’ve gotten a short article placed in the mag. I love sharing my new work and magazine placements. The people who follow my work want to be connected to who I’m connected to, so working in all of these different departments kind of does all of the marketing work on its own. People meet, chitchat, and boom! Another model wants to get published. 40

Redd
By Martin A. Berrios
uiet as kept Karlie Redd is more than your typical reality vixen. The Q “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” star has a storied history in music and television. Now, with a highly rated third season in the books, the New York native is looking to take her brand to new heights.
Black Men catches up with Karlie Redd to discuss how finding love in Hip
Hop isn’t easy, acting roles on the big screen and explains what the hustle is really about. Black Men: Most people know you from being casted on “Love & Hip Hop.” Can you describe that experience? Karlie Redd: Season one was pretty tough for me because it was my first season. The second season, I wasn’t in a relationship; I was by myself figuring it out and kept moving forward with my music. On the third season, I met [Yung] Joc and the show followed our relationship. As we all know, Joc was cheating on me from day one. At the end of the day something good came out of that relationship. He did bring a good record to the table—which I bought from his producer and songwriter—that peaked at 26 on the iTunes chart. Overall “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” was a great experience. It is a highly rated show, and it gave me a huge platform to let the world know who Karlie Redd is. For a lot of people this show is their guilty pleasure. It has given me an amazing opportunity to brand myself. Now, I’m just not a pretty face but a brand.

Considering the negative connotation that urban reality shows like these carry, what do you think the public has gotten wrong about you? A lot of people view me as messy, but I’m the type of person who doesn’t give a damn what you think about me because when the bills need to be paid, their opinion is not a factor. I just say what’s on my mind and try to be a loyal friend. People take that as being messy but it’s not; it’s just me keeping it honest. “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” was not the first time you have done television, correct? I’ve been acting for sometime way before “Love & Hip Hop.” I did “Zane Chronicles,” which was on Showtime and HBO. I also had a reoccurring role on “18 Wheels Of Justice” on TBS. I have also done movies including, Black Spring Break 2. As far reality television, I appeared on “Scream Queens,” which was a show that had contestants competing to land a role on Scream VI—from there I did “Love & Hip Hop.” What’s next for you in terms of acting? I have a Nollywood movie with Vivica Fox and Lynn Whitfield called 30 Days in Atlanta. I also have a television show with Bossip. I have another movie that is coming out in theatres called Top Five written, directed and starring Chris Rock whom I respect so much. It also features a host of notable actors like Whoopi Goldberg, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Rosario Dawson and Cedric Tha Entertainer.

You pride yourself on always keeping busy. What do you have in the works in terms of advancing the Karlie Redd brand? I am an ever-evolving entrepreneur building my brand a block at a time. I have a sex book called Even Exchange coming in November. I have a sex toy line that will be an extension of the book currently in development with a global distributor. I also have a clothing line coming out called Karlie’s Angels and a store called Merci. I’m just branding myself everywhere. The music is a very big priority for me; currently I am on a promo tour. My single “Heartbreaker” is doing really well. Right now, I am just releasing singles as that’s where the industry is heading. I’ll probably do an EP sometime next year. Considering you have been in very public relationships that didn’t work out, what’s your current status for all of our inquiring male readers? I’m single and I’m looking for a real man; someone who is respectful and God-fearing, who has his own wealth, takes care of himself and is a good supporter. I’m a good woman and I deserve the best. Remy Ma
Let Freedom Bang! By Michael Nguyen
ou could imagine Remy Ma wished for a lot of things while serving her eight-year jail sentence, but post-release, the only thing she wished for was was to have people stop using the term, “female rapper rapper.” .” Remy—along with fellow female emcees—just emcees—just wants to be respected on the same level as the fellas in this male-dominated rap industry. While names like Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea have definitely brought respect and credibility for all the ladies in the rap game, it’s Remy who’s who’s back with a vengeance and ready to put the rap game in her grips. After her release—in which she received received tons of support from from fans and industry members—you members—you could feel Remy’ Remy’ss on the verge of a triumphant comeback. Liken it to Kobe Bryant, saying he felt “like a racehorse that has been locked in a barn f or months.” If that’s that’s the case, the unleashed Remy is ready to come out sprinting, and she’s already off to a good start, with hard-hitting verses on hit records such as DJ Khaled’s “They Don’t Love You No More,” and Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N***a.” Keep in mind, while serving all those years kept her away from the studio, it didn’t keep her from writing down her experiences, downfalls, and struggles she went through. It’s something she’ll keep in the back of her mind ‘til the end of time and you can bet these stories are going to be told the best way Remy can tell ‘em, which is in the studio, over a beat with a microphone. Are you ready for Remy Ma?
Y
Black Men: Let’s talk about the state of rap. How much do you’re just making a song…you’re playing. If you got an issue with with you feel the game has changed since you’ve been gone—and, me, you’ll verbally tell me that. for better or worse? Remy Ma: I wouldn’t say it’s for better or worse. The people who I watched an interview you did and to paraphrase what you are in it have changed but that happens all the time. There are said in that interview, you basically stated, imagine how people who were doing music that aren’t doing it anymore and crazy it would’ve been to have Nicki and Kim work together there’ss others that weren’t in the industry before that have just there’ instead of hating on one another. Why do you think it’ it’ss so hard for rappers nowadays to show love? I’m not talking came up and got their recognition. I wouldn’t say it’s it’s changed in a way where the music is better now now,, but I do see the players in about Nicki and Kim specifically, but more in a general sense. the game have changed. That’s good. Sometimes you got people who’ve opened a lane for newcomers. I like that. There are so many Right, I don’t know if they hate on each other, but I think that different things going on. What’s What’s not okay is having to tear somebody s omebody down to build yourself up for no reason when they t hey did nothing physically or More specifically, let’s let’s talk about people using the term directly to you. I think that’s stupid. “female” rapper. rapper. You’re not a big fan of that term, are you? I would read interviews and you would talk about labels [ Laughs. Laughs.]] No, I’m not. People who use that terminology demean the female that’s being spoken about from the beginning. Like, why worrying about signing a female rapper rapper because of different does it have to be announced as a female rapper? You don’t say factors, mainly females would come in with an attitude or be “female doctor” or “female nurse.” It’s It’s just a stigma that sticks with divas. But being in the business for a while and having been the word female. You don’t call them “male rappers,” so I don’t get around so many male rappers, do you typically encounter it. male rappers who act like big divas behind-the-scenes? Oh, absolutely. They’re worse than girls, but you know, that’s Does it annoy you that every time you rap, there’s always because they say things like, “Oh, these women are on their period,” people who’ll try and stir the pot by saying that this line or and things like that. The problem is that female artists, whether it’ it ’s that line was directed to someone? Whether it’ it’ss Nicki or any a rapper or whatever, we cost money—if you’re trying to go for that other female rapper? look. For a guy, you you can get them a $15 line-up, a t-shirt and some It doesn’t annoy me because that’s what people do. It’s like a boxer where if they’re not sparring or training, they’re not practicing. I don’t see how they can step into the ring and not be rusty. The fight isn’t there and it shows whereas I wasn’t able to record songs and put records out, but I was always writing. I was always perfecting my craft, calling home and talking to my husband [Papoose], or talking to my brothers and seeing what they have to say. I think that becomes a part of it. You can’t take off for a year and just do nothing and come back in thinking everything is going to be like the way you left it. You have to work your voice and massage your craft and keep going. Who are some new artists that you’ve discovered and have been following since your release? [Long pause.] I don’t know; there are so many people. I’ve been trying to catch up on the stuff that I’ve missed, and there are some songs that I really like and I want to see the video to this record and such. I’m still on that. I haven’t got into all the new artists that are out. I’ve been watching a lot of battle raps that are really dope. I’ve been watching both guys and girls and that’s really cool. They’re not songs and they don’t have record deals, and that’s interesting to me. Do you have a favorite song right now? My favorite song...well, Jeremih’s someone I like. Actually, no, that’s my favorite when it comes to R&B. But Migos, that “hit ‘em with the left” [“Fight Night”]. When that comes on, I go crazy. It’s so hype. Oh, God. I would love to perform that. I could only imagine. Maybe there will be a Remy Ma remix in the future? Oooh, that’ll be hard! Going back to the recent records you did, those were songs that you made a guest feature on, but are you now more focused on yourself and just releasing your own material? I’m not really focused just on one thing—I’m more all over 62
the place in an organized way. I guess, by request, everybody just wants me on this, like the “Hot N***a” track, like, “Please, please get on this,” and I’m just like, “Alright, let me just do it.” I did that and the response was crazy, way more than I expected. I’m working on a mixtape that I want to put out called I’m Around. It’s definitely an organized confusion. I’m over here, over there, jump on from track to track, but it’s good. I’m not losing focus on the primary goal, which is to put out a solid, solo project. Switching topics now. Would you say that not being able to see your son on a consistent basis was the most difficult part about being in prison? [Sighs.] Definitely. Absolutely. Anybody, my mom, my husband, my grandparents—not being able to do anything and not seeing them when you want to, and other things like not being able to do my hair when I want to—all of that combined just makes you appreciate life and the privileges I was able to have. What did prison teach you about people, or more specifically, your friends and how a relationship with a friend can change after a lifechanging moment? I never had any issues with my friends, but it did teach me you have to make wise choices. One, for me, I didn’t realize my celebrity status until it was taken away in a sense. I kind of know who I am and know people expect more of me now. I think as far as people around me, those are people that I love and they showed me that’s all I need. I didn’t need all this outside stuff and the fake love. Finally, what lies ahead in the future of Remy Ma? It’s just so much that I want to do. First and foremost, I have to solidify myself in the music world because that’s my core. I definitely want to branch off and do other things. I’m not sure what it is exactly that I want to do, but I will like to do things that are in the TV area, and just try my hand at things I know I can do if the opportunity presents itself.

ANA BABY Only Female In Her Crew Image by Aderon Mothersill

By Kathy Iandoli na Baby’s name just started bubbling recently, as the femme fatale became the First Lady of French Montana’s burgeoning Coke Boys empire. But as the Bronx native will tell you, it’s a lot of work. Ana worked two jobs simultaneously – one as a mailroom clerk at a talent agency, the other in administration for an energy source company — before meeting her manager and linking with French Montana and his crew. Now her full-time hustle is making music, and she checks in with Black Men to discuss it all.
A
Black Men: Why do they call you the “evil queen”? Ana Baby: Seeing the movie The Evil Queen , that inspired me, and also I felt like it was a good contrast between good and evil, or just strength and softness. I think of being a queen as something royal, something regal, something feminine, something powerful. Then, you know, I consider myself the baddest out there. So if I’ma be bad, I’ma be the worst! I want the truth to come from me. I’m as real as they come. How did you first meet your manager, Bang? The funny story is, I met him on the street! I just saw a group of guys, and I liked their swag and I liked the way they were conducting themselves. I wasn’t really too familiar with who the Coke Boys were. I started rapping right there and letting them listen to some of my music because I had a demo. Bang was like, “I like what you’re doing. Give us some time, we’re working with French right now.” I’m like, “Who’s French?” They’re like, “There’s this guy coming out...” I’m like, “Okay! I don’t have nothing but time and patience. I’m willing to rock out with you guys!” As they were working with French, they were slowly giving me artist development, just supervising me and nurturing me at the same time. I would go to the studio with French and see what he’s doing and stuff like that. So, absorbing everything and watching them and running around with them, eventually it became a family. Those are my big brothers now. They show me the life! What have you learned from French Montana? I think overall I learned that you can play hard, but you gotta work harder. There’s always time to make it look effortless, and you want to have fun and you want to live the life. If you’re here, you want to live it to the fullest. At the same time, your work ethic has to be impeccable and you have to be committed to the goal and stick to it and keep grinding. French is a grinder. All the Coke Boys are grinders! They make sure they get, not only the goal they want, but the best. That was something they instilled in me. Just being around and watching how they put music together—they’re very musiBlackMenDigital.com

cal individuals. Not to sound biased, but I really think the Coke Boys got the best music out right now. What are the pros and cons of being one of the only girls in Coke Boys? The con is that I’m a girl. That’s always going to be a con. It’s a hard grind. It’s not easy, it’s still the same stereotypes that are going on for females out here. It’s gonna be that way I guess until the end of time. The story doesn’t change. However, the pros about is the fact that I am a girl – it automatically makes me stand out. It’s a double-edged sword. The fact that I’m a girl and running with a whole bunch of dudes, it’s teaching me how to keep up. At the end of the day when you put me up against other females, you’re going to see, “Oh Ana, she has a different swag about her!” I’m always hanging out with the boys, I’m always going to stand out when it comes to the girls. I’m not here trying to go up against other females. I’m like, “Who’s the top? Period.” If the top is a dude, I gotta be ready to go against him. Do I want to go against anybody? Not really. I would like to play along with everybody, but that’s not life. That’s not realistic, so I got to be ready to show my best defense. I’m going to see who’s the best person out there that’s doing it, and I want to work with them and learn from them. That happens to be French, who’s giving me the chance to make it happen. What can we expect from you in 2015? In 2015, you can expect a lot more music. I’m dropping my second mixtape and recording my third one right now. I’m putting out more videos. I’m working with a movie director at this time, he’s got an HBO series out. I’m meeting a lot of people and getting a lot of merchandise and franchises and doing whatever I can do to get into everything. Even if I’m the rookie, I’m going to work it until I can’t work it no more.

What type of cultures can you find in Miami? Whenever I visit Miami, I’m always excited to try new places to eat! You have Latin, African and Caribbean influence all in one place, and that makes for a great combo! Do you attend Art Basel? No, I do not. What are the biggest events, shows and holidays to plan for in Miami? Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends are always crazy in Miami—especially South Beach. You’re sure to run into a celebrity or two. I enjoy visiting Miami on any regular weekend as well. What Miami based magazine do you aspire to appear in? I’d love to be featured in Smooth. What’s the best place to vacation in Miami and or in Florida? The absolute best place to vacation in Florida is Fontainebleau. If you want to party they have an awesome club located inside. How do you plan on actively networking with Black Men mag to build your presence in the market, share your network with the company and make your appearance in the magazine a mutually valuable moment and experience? I’m aware that Black Men mag has a large following and is a great outlet for new models and other artist. Over the last year I’ve made many steps in furthering my modeling career and broadening my audience as well. I understand that image is everything and I work to portray myself tastefully yet still sexy. I feel that the magazine puts out quality and respectful products, and that collaborating can introduce others to both brands while upholding the mutual standards of work.

I try to connect with other people in the same industry who also have a large following, and I also make sure to keep new things coming so that I’m not stagnant. What’s the wildest comment that you received? Oh, wow! I’ve been proposed to about 20 times now via email [laughs]. Who is the biggest, most popular or famous person who posted your image on their page for #wcw (Woman Crush Wednesday) or just because? A friend of mine (@kingkeraun) made an Instagram video featuring me as his “IG Crush” and I gained lots of followers from that.
