KEVIN GEORGE FLETCHER BARNES 1939–1999 In 1986, Barnes Products Pty Limited (formerly Barnes Pattern Supplies) was founded by Kevin Barnes. Kevin had a vision. This was to introduce the latest technologies in materials such as polyurethane, silicone rubber and gypsum that met world class standards to Australian industry. Kevin’s dream was realised. Today, the Barnes network prides i tself with continuing this high standard of materials and service to Australia and many other countries. Barnes’ head office is based at Bankstown NSW, providing the main facility for distribution, product testing and development of new products and applications. The seminar room provides a comfortable environment for moulding & casting courses. Barnes Products Victoria began operation in September 2002. This division allows Victorian based clients to obtain our standard personalised service and technical advice modelled on the vast experience gained from our Sydney outlets. The first Barnes retail outlet, Barnes Moulding & Casting Supplies, opened in November 2002. Based at King Street, Newtown in Sydney, this shop showcases the whole Barnes range and allows ready access direct to the public. We welcome your visit at any of the Barnes outlets.

LE BEAU TOUCHE 900g block

P40 1.3kg billet
CHAVANT PROFESSIONAL PLASTELINE This clay is complimented by a silky feel and room temperature working consistency. It contains sulphur so a test with certain silicones is recommended. This is one of the softest clays that Chavant produces. This product is the original sculpting clay formula developed by Chavant in 1892. 900g
DA VINCI 900g block
CHAVANT NSP A professional grade sulphur free sculpting clay. NSP contains a higher percentage of waxes making it somewhat tougher than other similar products. NSP has good adhesive qualities, flexibility and length. NSP accepts cut detail lines cleanly. The surface texture may seem somewhat ‘grabby’ as it contains no sulphur. NSP is firmer as compared to other products. Grades Available: Hard & Medium Colour: Brown & Green Size: 900g
CHAVANT LE BEAU TOUCHE Available in brown or grey/green. This clay is sulphur free and has excellent adhesive qualities and smoothness. Holds very good detail, will carve and shape easily. Has high flexibility and will not dry or crack. A small test may be required for curing of silicones.
CHAVANT DA VINCI – firm This grey/green sulphur clay is based on a traditional Italian formula. It is exceptionally soft with a smooth surface. Pieces require an armature as it will slump under it’s own weight. Da Vinci has low strength, flexibility and length. A small test may be required for curing of silicones.
CHAVANT Y2KLAY Y2Klay is lightweight being 40% lighter with 75% increased volume, and has a SG of 0.95. It is sulphur free and is workable at 51°C, meaning faster heating and a more comfortable working range. Many mould types i ncluding MDM, polyester, epoxy, urethane and silicone can be produced from the clay surface. Y2Klay is great for machining and displays no structural or surface cracking as a result of its good stability. 1.3kg
CHAVANT P40 CLAY P40 is a sulphur free de-aired compound. De-airing, which removes 90% of entrapped air, gives a more dense and compact product. This clay is formulated to meet the exacting requirements of the automotive, pattern, industrial design and model industries. Heat to approximately 60°C for best results. Cooling will be very slow, allowing a long period to work. It exhibits excellent qualities of adhesion and cohesion. Can be carved, extruded and slicked to an extremely accurate, glass-like finish. Brown in colour. A small test may be required for curing of silicones. Chavant clay modelling videos are available to order.

KLEAN KLAY The most popular new oil based clay available. A softer type of plasticene clay with the advantage of not inhibiting the cure of flexible moulding compounds, allowing the set up of the entire Barnes silicone range. SOFT, REGULAR, FIRM & EXTRA FIRM grades available.
SUPER SCULPEY Super Sculpey is a ceramic like sculpting compound that is shatter and chip resistant. It remains soft and pliable if stored in a cool place and can be baked to a varying degree of hardness in conventional ovens. It becomes hard for easier painting and / or glazing and can be carved, sanded and drilled. Sculpey is a sulphur free product. Suitable for Barnes silicone rubber products. Flesh tone.
SCULPEY GLAZE Available in a matte or gloss finish for use over baked Sculpey products. 33ml
KLEAN KLAY 2.2kg block, 22.5kg bulk pack
SCULPEY SUPER-FLEX The most popular polymer clay, super sculpey, now comes i n a colourful version that remains rubbery and flexible after baking. SuperFlex is a non-toxic compound that will not dry out when exposed to air. It stays soft and pliable until baked in a regular oven. Once cooled it is bendable, flexible and virtually indestructible. SuperFlex is perfect for all kid’s creations and adults will love it for it’s incredible durability and range of craft uses. This 8 colour pack includes colour step by step instructions and a sculpting tool. 8 colour pack: White, Black, Blue, Yellow, Flesh, Green, Orange, Red.
SCULPEY III Wonderfully soft and pliable right from the package in 40 vibrant colours. Excellent for general crafting of jewellery, figures and home décor items. This fun and easy to use modelling medium bakes hard with a smooth, matte finish in your home oven. Sculpey III sculpts well with modelling tools, can be rolled and cut, extruded through a clay gun or formed over armatures such as foil, wire and glass. Available in 2oz bars in Basic, Intermediate, Bright and Pearl range of colours. BASICS

This modelling clay is extremely popular amongst stop motion animation artists in the US and Australia. Vibrant pigmentation in this clay gives true colouring when filmed. Excellent oil based clay for melting down and pouring inside alginate casts and silicone moulds. It’s basic formulation allows for repeated melt-down without the ‘sulphur separation’ that occurs with other similar clays. A small test may be required for curing of silicones.
MODELLING WAX This a soft microcrystalline wax that is nut brown in colour, also known as victory brown. It is primarily used for direct modelling or pulling waxes from silicone moulds for investment casting. 453g & 4.53kg

VINYL STRIPPABLE SPRAY This product allows the user to laminate fibreglass moulds directly onto wet clay. The Vinyl Spray is applied to the clay surface as a barrier coat to seal in any moisture from the clay sculpt or walls. Use in conjunction with a suitable release agent such as J-Wax. Translucent, thixotropic one component material. Shore 30A paste consistency that can be easily pigmented. Dilute with solvents such as D-Limonene and airbrush or brush onto a soft silicone to produce great effects 85g, 290g KE45T
E41 & E43 E41 is a transparent, flowable, onecomponent, acetic acid cure silicone with excellent mechanical properties. Excellent primerless adhesion properties. 93g, 330g E43 is a transparent black, self-levelling, one-component, acetic cure silicone with very good mechanical properties. Excellent primerless adhesion properties. 98g, 330g
D-LIMONENE
PC12 THIXOTROPIC This clear medium is used to thicken R520 & R585 grades of condensation cure silicone which are flowable as supplied. 100g, 500g & 1kg
THIXOTROPIC ADDITIVE M A colourless, cloudy medium viscosity liquid with a faint odour. Exclusively used to thicken those condensation curing RTV-2 silicone rubber grades of the elastosil M45.. series which are flowable as supplied. 50g, 100g, 500g
PROTECTIVE FILM SF-18
A biodegradable solvent occurring in nature as the main component of citrus peel oil. It has a pleasant citrus aroma and has a FDA-GRAS rating (is generally recognised as safe.) Replacement for toxic solvents. Can be used to thin KE45T.
A solution of a modified polyvinyl butryal in ethyl alcohol (ethanol). Used for covering surfaces of models or other surfaces with which the uncured silicone rubber makes direct contact, to prevent vulcanization problems, eg amine-cured epoxy resins and some plasticines and styrene based products.
500ml, 1ltr, 5ltr or 19ltr
170g, 700g
SILICONE DILUENT
STABILISER 43
A non-reactive fluid used as a diluent. When used in small amounts of up to 10% it allows for retention of physical properties while reducing the viscosity of the total system. Used with silicones like Soft Translucent of amounts up to 30%, it will allow for the production of floppy ‘skinlike’ material. 100ml, 1ltr, 5ltr, 20ltr & 200ltr
STO-RAPID Rapid cure additive for use with condensation cure silicones. Only a few drops are required as this product is extremely active. 114g
A colourless, cloudy medium viscosity liquid with a faint odour. Exclusively used to thicken those addition curing RTV-2 silicone rubber grades of the elastosil M46.. series which are flowable as supplied. 100g, 500g
G790 PRIMER This primer is great for actually adhering the Wacker range of silicones to a substrate. The liquid rubber is poured against the primed rigid surfaces. 100g, 700g

BJB WATER CLEAR TIPS MOULDS All BJB WC series products produce most optimum results when cast into platinum based (addition cure) silicone moulds.
PRESSURE
Some clients have had success in casting the 80 Shore D water clears (never any of
Generally using 50-70psi works best when using pressure without utilising vacuum first. It is important to add pressure gradually when using silicone moulds. Putting the pressure on too fast will very often distort the mould. When using pressure it is important to take temperature into consideration. The temperature in most pressure tanks is less than 25°C and will often cause the material to cure slowly or to inhibit a through cure, especially if cast in a thin section. We try to recommend that the client utilise a heater band on the pressure vessel when possible.
the lower durometer products) by baking out their tin based systems overnight at 66°C or utilising a well aged mould. This allows the methanol that causes the inhibition to dissipate. For best results from silicone moulds, we recommend allowing the mould to fully cure, rinsing the mould in a light solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water, then rinsing well with warm water and drying well before casting. Avoid scrubbing the mould as it could affect the surface detail on your mould.
CURING
Other mould mediums may be utilised but keep in mind that the surface of the mould
RELEASE
The flexible water clear products can be cured with elevated heat for a faster demould times. However, heat curing has proved to compromise the finished physical properties – mainly tear strength and elongation. Slightly elevated temperatures (26-30°C) will assist in giving thin section a “kick” for curing but any addition temperature would be detrimental to the finished properties.
Most mould releases will cause fogging or

will be duplicated. You cannot obtain a glossy part from a rough mould. It is also important to remember that keeping the mould and WC temperatures close to each other will help eliminate inhibition and chill marks.
clarity when using J-Wax. We recommend that testing be done prior to any application of a release agent.
VACUUM vs PRESSURE While both of these processes work well separately for eliminating air bubbles in the part, using both will often produce the best results. Vacuum will generally eliminate 97% of the air and low pressure of 40-60psi can diminish the remaining amount.
VACUUM When using vacuum it is best to de-air the material after mixing parts A&B together before casting the part. In most instances you will see the material continue to bubble under vacuum. An easy rule of thumb for pulling vacuum is to mix A&B, pull vacuum, break, wipe sides with a stir stick, and pull vacuum again. This should break the surface tension and eliminate continued bubbling. We offer AF4 for assisting in de-aeration during vacuum.
• Wet sand the part with 600, 1500, then 2000 grit wet/dry paper. • Buff the part with Schlegel #1 buffing pad and 3M Perfect-it rubbing compound #05973 • Finish with Schlegel #2 pad and 3M Perfect-it foam polishing glaze #05996
TROUBLE SHOOTING TIPS Surface is Tacky: • Did the part see adequate amount of time in the mould? • Was a tin based silicone mould used? • Were thin walls (3mm or less) given a “heat boost”?
Part is Foggy: • Was it cast cold (under 25°C)? • Was a suspicious release agent utilised? • Was another material cast into the mould before the WC? Shrinkage: • Was the part cast in a two-part mould with risers? • Was part mass cast without risers?
e u g o l a t a C t c u d o r P 27
Part Shatters from Mould: • Was the mould cold when the part was cast? • Was the material preconditioned (warmed)? • Was the part left in for full-recommended time before demoulding? > Optimal results occur when the material is processed and postcured as stated on the technical data sheet, especially when the cast is done in a thin wall section. > Casts done 3mm or less will require slight temperature increase to promote internal exotherm. > Clear casts that come from a mould looking “cloudy or hazy” have most likely been cast at a lower than ambient temperature (25°C), have been cast in a mould that has not finished curing, or has been used with a release that would cause the cloudiness. Determine temperature of materials with a thermometer, not the thermostat for your room! > Shrinkage will occur with large cast parts, even when utilising the longer work life materials in thicker masses. Closed moulds with feed gates are highly recommended in these applications. > The WC series of polyurethanes can all be tinted to translucent colours or pigmented for opacity.
TIPS FOR POLISHING WATER CLEAR POLYURETHANE PARTS u a . m o c . s t c u d o r p s e n r a b . w w w 28
To achieve the best finish possible on water clear urethanes, a post-cure is required regardless of the part size. Follow the instructions provided on the data sheets for post-curing operations. The surface condition or your part will dictate where you are to begin finishing and will determine the grit of sandpaper required. To finish/polish a machined part (milled, saw cut or lathe turned finish), begin with the finest grit sandpaper possible to produce a flat surface free of tool lines or steps. 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper will provide a good place to start. Utilise a hard, flat acrylic or hardwood block. Rubber blocks or your hand may cause unevenness and will provide a wavy surface on the final polish. Take extra care to maintain an even surface if you are working with a curved or rounded part, and are hand sanding. Soak sandpaper in water for 1 to 2 hours prior to sanding to soften. Add a small amount of detergent to a spray bottle or bucket with water to lubricate while sanding (keep the surface wet). This mixture will avoid loading the sandpaper. Begin sanding in one direction only until surface is flat and uniform in appearance without noticeable tooling step lines or defects. If you find the defects are too deep and are difficult to remove, you should switch to a heavier grit sandpaper and proceed until they are completely removed. Continue sanding with finer grits, i.e. 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000. If you have obtained a flaw-free surface early on, these steps will go quickly. Rotate 90 degrees each time you change grits. Continue to sand across the last completed grit area. This step will assist you in perceiving the previous lines, and

when they are gone you may move to the next grit. When you reach the 2000 grit paper, you should be able to note a slight shine to the surface. This will help you determine whether you have removed all flaws. If so, proceed with the polishing steps. High-speed buffers tend to work well on metals but will burn plastics quickly. Lower speeds perform better, and the heat build-up can be controlled. Finishing with a foam buff pad tends to provide better results than with the use of traditional wool or cotton. 3M products have proven excellent for polishing urethane. Start with ‘Finesse It’ compound in a cup. Apply a light film onto the part with a brush. Do not allow the surface to dry out for long while buffing. Continue to re-apply the compound. Monitor the surface temperature – warm is good, hot is not. This step will provide a high shine on the part. In some instances, this may be enough of a finish for your part. For a higher sheen, utilise a new buff using 3M’s ‘imperial Hand Glaze’ in the same manner as the ‘Finesse It’. Though not intended as a machine compound, on the clear urethane product, it works beautifully. Then spray the part with ‘Brillianize’ (an anti-static polish/spray available where acrylic products are sold). Hand buff with a polishing cloth or a very soft flannel towel. Avoid terry cloth because it may scratch.
This amazing Water Clear Urethane cast, produced by Terrance Plowright Fine Arts, weighs in at an incredible 68kg. The solid cast is the largest ever produced in Australia from BJB’s Water Clear range of urethanes. The grade chosen for this cast was WC780 with a 3 hour work time. DUROMETER
SHORE A SCALE
A durometer is the device used for measuring the hardness of plastics, synthetics and natural rubber materials.
(soft rubber like materials effectively measure from 10-90)
The Shore A scale is most commonly used as a measurement for the more “rubber-like” materials, including most silicone RTV materials. (Silicone rubbers generally run between 20 and 60 on the Shore A scale.) The Shore D scale will measure harder elastomeric products. Both scales measure hardness on a table from 0 to 100. The higher the measured value, the harder the material. Ratings are always qualified to plus or minus 5 points due to variations of test results from operator to operator.
VISCOSITY Viscosity is the measurement of a fluid’s internal resistance to flow. This is normally designated in units of centipoise or poise. Approximate Viscosities of Common Materials at room temperature
Water Machine Oil #30 Motor Oil Olive Oil Castor Oil Karo Syrup Honey Molasses Peanut Butter
1cps 100cps 250cps 500cps 1,000cps 5,000cps 10,000cps 100,000cps paste
THIXOTROPIC Materials reduce their viscosity as agitation or pressure is increased at a constant rate. Ketchup and mayonnaise are considered thixotropic materials. They appear thick or viscous but actually pump quite easily.
