1 Introduction

1 Introduction 1.1 Scope The bandwidth sharing of MBTS multi-mode co-transmission feature provides a transmission resource management (TRM) solution for the scenario where, 

The GSM+UMTS (GU) common transmission (Co-transmission) based on IP over FE/GE or IP over E1 is used on the MBTS side.



The BSC and RNC are deployed separately, or the BSC6900 is deployed, providing independent physical ports for the Abis and Iub interfaces.



The transmission on the base station controller side is based on IP over FE/GE or IP over E1.

This feature corresponds to MRFD-211505 Bandwidth sharing of MBTS Multi-mode Co-Transmission(GBTS) and MRFD-221505 Bandwidth sharing of MBTS Multi-mode Co-Transmission(NodeB). 

Before reading this document, you need to be familiar with the Transmission Resource Management Feature Parameter Description.



In this document, the MBTS refers to the GU MBTS, the BTS refers to the MBTS performing the functions of a GSM base station, the NodeB refers to the MBTS performing the functions of a UMTS base station.



In this document, the BSC6900 refers to the GU MBSC.

2 Overview of Bandwidth Sharing of MBTS Multi-Mode Co-Transmission There is a large margin for multiplexing transmission resources because peak load shifts between GSM and UMTS services. In this situation, operators can employ GU co-transmission solution to save transmission resources, and adopt the TRM algorithm to guarantee the continuity of high-priority services, avoid possible mutual effect between GSM and UMTS services, and improve the utilization efficiency of transmission resources. As shown in Figure 2-1, the bandwidth sharing of MBTS multi-mode co-transmission feature is applicable to the scenarios that meet the following requirements: 

On the base station controller side, the BSC and RNC are deployed separately. Alternatively, the BSC6900 is deployed, providing independent physical ports for the Abis and Iub interfaces.



On the base station side, the MBTS is deployed, and implements IP co-transmission based on IP over FE/GE or IP over E1. The MBTS provids a common physical port for the Abis and Iub interfaces.



The transmission networking is of one of the following modes: − The

transmission on the BSC6900 and the MBTS side are both based on IP over FE/GE.

− The

transmission on the BSC6900 side is based on IP over FE/GE, while the transmission on the MBTS side is based on IP over E1.

− The

transmission on the BSC6900 and the MBTS side are both based on IP over E1.

3 Technical Description 3.1 Overview The TRM solution for this feature is as follows: 

The common transmission policy for GSM and UMTS services is made by configuring parameters regarding transmission priority and transmission bandwidth (BW).



Flow control is used: − Load

control and the NodeB uplink BW adaptive adjustment algorithm are used for UMTS services.

− Load

control is used for GSM services.

3.2 Transmission Policy The GSM and UMTS transmission priorities are configured in a centralized manner to indicate the priority of the GSM services or UMTS services for occupying the transmission resources. Operators can assign different priorities to GSM and UMTS services, and services with different priorities correspond to different DSCP values. In this way, both systems and services are taken into consideration in the transmission priority configuration. When transmission congestion occurs at a node in the transport network, this node preferentially forwards data packets for high-priority services based on DSCP values. This guarantees that GSM and UMTS high-priority services are processed continuously. When the demand for GSM services decreases or even becomes unnecessary, the bandwidth is gradually occupied by UMTS services. This ensures that the transmission resources are dynamically shared between GSM and UMTS services. For details about the transmission priorities, see the Transmission Resource Management Feature Parameter Description. It is recommended that a minmum BW be reserved for UMTS services to prevent the peak rate of the GSM services from affecting the UMTS services.

3.3 Load control Load control involves admission control, LDR, and OLC. The GSM and UMTS services use admission control to prevent over-admission that leads to congestion, packet loss, and retransmission at the transmission convergence nodes, and guarantees the quality of admitted services. To prevent congestion, LDR is used, which reduces transmission load, and increases admission success rate and system capacity. When congestion occurs, OLC is used to quickly eliminate overload, minimizing the impact of overload on high-priority users. 3.4 Uplink BW Adaptive Adjustment Algorithm The switch for the uplink BW adaptive adjustment algorithm on the NodeB side is turned on by default. The NodeB automatically monitors congestion on the transport network, and dynamically adjusts the maximum available BW on the Iub interface according to the algorithm. On detecting transmission congestion, the NodeB will automatically reduce the BW allocated to low-priority services based on the service priority policies, eliminating congestion. This ensures that the transmission BW actually occupied by GSM/UMTS services always approaches the bottleneck BW. For details about the uplink BW

Configure LP and paths for GSM and UMTS services. − (Optional) − Run

Run ADD IPLOGICPORT to add an IP LP.

ADD IPPATH to add an IP path.

If an LP is configured, the parameter CARRYFLAG needs to be set to IPLGCPORT to carry the path on the LP. It is recommended that a TRM load threshold (TRMLOADTH) table should be configured on the GSM and UMTS LP/path separately. The MML command ADD TRMLOADTH is used to add a TRMLOADTH table. If a default TRMLOADTH table is used, set the TRMLOADTHINDEX parameter to 3 when adding an LP or path. Table 4-1 describes the recommended transmission BW configurations. Configure the transmission priorities. − Set

the GSM and UMTS service priorities so that they meet the following requirements: GSM RT service priority > UMTS RT service priority > GSM NRT service priority > UMTS NRT service priority.

− Run

ADD TRMMAP to set the priorities of the GSM and UMTS service on the BSC and RNC side.

− Run

SET BSCABISPRIMAP to set the DSCP priorities of the GSM OML, RSL, and ESL signaling on the BSC side.

− Run

ADD SCTPLNK to set the DSCP priorities of the UMTS NCP and CCP signaling on the RNC side.

− Run

SET BTSVLAN to set the DSCP priorities of the GSM service and signaling on the BTS side. Ensure that the mapping rules of SERVICETYPE and DSCP on the BTS side are consistent with those on the BSC side.

− Run

ADD IPPATH to set the DSCP priorities of UMTS services on the NodeB side. Ensure that the DSCP priorities on the NodeB side are consistent with those on the RNC side.

SET DIFPRI to set the DSCP priorities of UMTS signaling on the NodeB side. Ensure that the DSCP priority of SIGPRI on the NodeB side are consistent with those on the RNC side.



(Optional only when the transmission is based on IP over FE/GE and the transmission bottleneck bandwidth is variable) Enable the dynamic adjustment of LP bandwidth function on the BSC and RNC sides.
