Introduction The Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) is to provide the improvement of existing traffic control system in the County. The proposed ATMS attempt to take advantage of information that can be provided by roadside traffic sensors and cameras (realtime traffic information to increase trans ortation system efficiency, enhance mobility and improve safety, in the County.
Purpose of ATMS: Increase transportation system efficiency Enhance mobility Improve safety Reduce fuel consum tion and environmental cost Reducing the incident Increase economic productivity, and Create an environment for ITS market
Functional Areas of ATMS Real-time
traffic monitoring Dynamic message sign monitoring and control Incident monitoring Traffic camera monitoring and control Active Traffic Management (ATM) Ramp
meter monitoring and control Arterial management Traffic signal monitoring and control Automated warning systems Road Weather Information System (RWIS) monitoring Highway advisory radio Urban
Traffic Management and Control
Real-time traffic monitoring Real time traffic Monitoring is the process where the Observed by various roadside sensor and electronic device.
Dynamic message sign monitoring and control Used on roadways to give travelers information about special events. Such signs warn of traffic congestion, accidents, incidents, roadwork zones, or speed limits on a specific highway segment.
• DEVICE: . - GPS trace + mobile comms e.g. GSM. -Radio Signal Triangulation -Roadside beacon + dedicated short range tag
Incident monitoring CCTV Video Surveillance System along with incident detection system is installed in the roadside to take appropriate measures and give announcement through Public Address if needed.
• DEVICE: -CCTVVideo Surveillance
System. -Incident Detection System
.
Traffic camera monitoring and control A traffic camera is a video camera which observes vehicular traffic on a road. These are used in the roadside su highways, freeways, motorways, and expressways, as well as a roads.
• -CCTV Camera/ Dome Camera.
-Monitoring device -Power source. -High Speed Internet.
Active Traffic Management (ATM) Active traffic management is method of increasing peak capacity and smoothing traffic flows on busy major highways.
• Techniques are: -Variable speed limits. - Hard-shoulder runnin -Ramp-metering controlled -By overhead variable message signs
Ramp meter monitoring and control A ramp meter is a device, usually a basic traffic light or a two-section signal (red and green only, no yellow) light together with a signal controller that regulates the flow of traffic entering freeways according to current traffic conditions.
• Uses: -Use of traffic signal at free way on ramp. - For decreasing traffic congestion.
-For Improving driver safety.
Arterial management Arterial management systems manage traffic along arterial roadways, employing traffic detectors, traffic signals, and various means of communicating information to travelers.
Traffic signal monitoring and control Traffic signal monitoring and control including communications systems, adaptive control systems, traffic responsive, real-time data collection and analysis, and maintena management systems. Traffic signal monitoring and control is operate traffic with greater efficiency.

Automated warning systems Automatic warning system is the process where the current traffic condition is informed to the traveler through dynamic signal and horn.
Application of ATMS in Bangladesh Advanced Transportation management system is not developed in Bangladesh. But only some functions of ATMS have been applied in toll plaza in our country. With the advanced research ATMS can be applied in Bangladesh. reduce the traffic congestion, rate of incident, increasing the rate traffic flow. Application of ATMS is also improve the environment of our country by reducing fuel consumption.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ADVANTAGES OF ATMS:-Improved safety -Better traffic flow -Lower travel cost -Better environmental quality - ncrease us ness ac v y -Greater user acceptance -Better travel information -Better planning information
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES OF ATMS:-Difficult to use in mixed traffic -Preliminary difficulties in understanding -ITS equipments costly -The control system software could be hacked by ac ers
CONCLUSION The application of ATMS in some developed countries like America, Japan and England has given them high progress in the field of transportation. This helped them in their economic progress. Also the traffic congestions, rate of road accidents, wastage of fuels are decreased to a large . economic mean of transportation with advance information of transits. Now transportation has become a safer and efficient mode for these countries. Hence with much more interest and advanced research in the field of ATMS it can be implemented in our country and can prove to be the solution of the traffic problems including traffic congestion, air pollution and traffic accidents.
