Summar& of Test Method s"ecimen of the soil is washed over a 75-μm (No. 200) sieve. lay and other "articles that are dis"ersed by the wash water% as well as water-soluble materials% are removed from the soil durin the test. The loss in mass resultin from the wash treatment is calculated as mass "ercent of the oriinal sam"le and is re"orted as the "ercentae of material finer than a 75-μm (No. 200) sieve by washin. Si'nifi$an$e and se aterial finer than the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve can be se"arated from larer "articles much more efficiently and com"letely by wet sievin than with dry sievin. Therefore% when accurate determinations of material finer than 75-μm sieve in soil are desired% this test method is used on the test s"ecimen "rior to dry sievin. 9sually the additional amount of material finer than 75-μm sieve obtained in the dry sievin "rocess is a small amount. $f it is lare% the efficiency of the  washin o"eration should be chec,ed% as itit could be an indication of deradation of the soil. 6ith some soils% "articularly clayey soils% in order to ,ee" the finer material from adherin to the larer "articles% it will be necessary to soa, the soil "rior to washin it throuh the sieve.  deflocculatin aent (dis"ersin aent) should be added to the soil when it is soa,ed.
