5.3 Single-usePlasticMolds—Moldsshallconformtothe followingadditionalrequirementswhenplasticisthepredominantmaterialusedinconstruction: 5.3.1 WallThickness—Thesidewallsshallbeofsufficient stiffnesstomeettherequirementsof 3.1(See Note 5).
4. ReusableMolds 4.1 Reusablemoldsarethosewhicharedesignedtobeused morethanasingletime.Reusablemoldsshallbemadeof nonabsorptivematerials,andconstructedaseitheronepieceor severalpieces(seeNote4). 4.2 Reusablemoldsshallbeprovidedwithaclosureorbase onthelowerendatrightanglestotheaxisofthecylinder. Moldsmaybesinglepiecemoldsormadefromcastingswith aseparatedetachablebaseplateorabasethatisanintegralpart ofthesidewall.Themoldshallbeeithercoatedormadeofa materialthatwillpreventadherencetotheconcrete. Atthetime ofuse,moldsshallnotleakwater. Aninsidefillet,ifany,atthe bottomofthesidewallshallhaveanindentationaroundthe circumference no more than 3 mm [ 1⁄8 in.] in the vertical directionornomorethan5mm[3⁄16 in.]inthehorizontal direction. 4.3 Reusable moldsshall be testedfor water leakage as describedin6.4,forresistancetodamageasdescribedin6.3.1, andfordimensionalstabilityinaccordancewith3.1.2and3.1.3 initiallyandafterevery50usesoreverysixmonths,whichever comesfirst.
NOTE 5—Thiscanbeachievedthroughsufficientsidewallthickness alone,orincombinationwithastiffenedtop.
5.3.2 BottomDesign —Thebottomshallbedesignedsothat it will be flush with the bottom of the sidewall within a toleranceof2mm[ 1⁄16 in.].An inside fillet,if any, at the bottomofthesidewallshallhaveanindentationaroundthe circumference no more than 4 mm [ 1⁄8 in.] in the vertical directionornomorethan5mm[ 3⁄16in.]intheradialdirection. Thebottomshallbeofadequaterigiditytopreventpermanent deformationwhenspecimensaremoldedinaccordancewith the applicable provisions of Practice C31/C31M or C192/ C192M. 5.3.3 Material—The mold manufacturershallcertifythat: (1)theplasticmaterialusedinmoldshasamaximumwater absorptionoflessthan0.5%in24hwhentestedinaccordance withTest Method D570; ( 2)theplastichasanIzodimpact toughnessofatleast117J/m[2.2ftlb/in.]ofnotchfora4mm [1⁄8in.]thickspecimentestedinaccordancewithTestMethods D256;and(3)afterbeingheldat12°C[10°F]for24h,the plasticshallnotfracturewhensubjecttotapping andjarring thatisjudgedtobetypicalofwhatoccurswhenspecimensare moldedinaccordancewiththeapplicableprovisionsofPracticeC31/C31M orC192/C192M. 5.4 PaperMolds—Whenpaperor otherpotentiallyabsorptivefibermaterialisusedastheprimarystructuralmaterialin theconstructionofthesidewallsorbottomofthemold,the moldshallconformtothefollowingadditionalrequirements: 5.4.1 Side Walls—Thesidewallsofpapermoldsshallbe made with a minimum of three plies having a combined thicknessofnotlessthan2mm[0.070in.].Seamsontheinside ofthemoldshallnotbeopenbymorethan2mm[ 1⁄16 in.].
NOTE 4—Satisfactorymoldscanbemadefromlengthsofsteeltubing orpipethatisslitononesideparalleltotheaxisandfittedwithameans ofclosingtheverticalslitaswellasameansofattachingabaseplate.The requireddimensionaltolerancesmustbe maintainedafterslitting,clamping,andattachingthe baseplate.Othernonabsorptivematerialswhich havebeenusedincludeiron,brass,steel,andvariousplastics.Although aluminumandmagnesiumalloyshavebeenused,someof thesealloys maybereactivewithcementconstituentsandare thereforeunacceptable.
5. Single-UseMolds 5.1 Single-usemoldsare molds designed to be used once anddiscarded.Theyarepermittedtobemadeofsheetmetal, plastic,suitablytreatedpaperproducts,orothermaterialsand shallconformtotherequirementsofthisspecification. 5.2 PhysicalRequirements—Themoldsaspreparedforuse shallcomplywiththefollowing: 5.2.1 WaterLeakage—WhentestedasdescribedinSection 6,thereshallbenovisibleleakage. 5.2.2 Absorptivity—WhentestedasdescribedinSection 6, theabsorptionshallnotexceed thevaluesgiven in Table 1. Intermediatevaluesareproportionaltothesquareoftheheight. 5.2.3 Elongation—Whentested asdescribedinSection 6, theelongationaftertestshallnotexceed0.2%ofheight.
NOTE 6—Theminimumthicknessofmaterialusedinsidewallsand bottomsisconsideredadequateforcylindersupto150mm[6in.]in diameter.Forlargercylindersthickermaterialmayberequiredtomeet requirements of3.1.
5.4.2 BottomCaps —Thebottomcapofthemoldshallbe madeofeithermetalorpaper.Ifmetal,itshallnotbelessthan 0.23 mm [0.009 in.] in thickness and coated to prevent corrosion(Note6).Itshallbedesignedsothatitwillbeflush withthebottomedgeofthesidewallwithinatoleranceof2 mm [1⁄16 in.]andtheinsidecrimp,ifany,shallproducean indentationaroundthecircumferenceofthecylindernomore than5mm[ 3⁄16 in.]intheradial,andnomorethan4mm[ 1⁄8 in.]intheverticaldirection.Ifmadeofpaper,thebottomcap ofthemoldshallbeofparchment-linedcapstocknotlessthan 0.7mm[0.028in.]thick(Note6).Itshallbegluedtothe outsideofthewallsbymeansofaflangenotlessthan19mm [3⁄4 in.]high.Theglueshallbewater-insolubleadhesiveofthe resin type that willnot react with fresh concrete. Only the practicableminimumamountofadhesiveshallbeexposedon theinnersideofthebottomofthemold. 5.4.3 Waterproofing—Themoldmadefrompaperorfiber shallbe completelycoatedoninsideandoutside,sidewalls,

NOTE 8—Suchcoatingsmaybeunsuitableformoldsthataresubjected totemperaturesabove49°C[120°F],eitherbeforeorafterfillingwith concrete.
6.1 Apparatus —The assembly used for the absorptionelongationtestshallfollowtheprinciplesillustratedinFig.1. 6.2 Specimens—Molds shall be selected as described in Section 2.Single-usemoldsshallnotbereusednorthesame moldretested. 6.3 TestProcedureforMolds: 6.3.1 Samplesofall typesofsingle-usemoldsandreusable plastic molds shall be subjected to the dry rodded coarse aggregatetestasdescribedin6.3.2toevaluatetheirresistance todamageunderuseandtothewaterleakagetestdescribedin 6.3.3 and 6.3.4. Paper orother potentiallyabsorptivemolds shall additionally be tested for absorptivity and elongation describedin6.3.5.Plasticandsheetmetalmoldsneednotbe testedforelongationandabsorption,butshouldbetestedfor waterleakage.Dimensionalrequirementsforallmoldsshallbe verified. 6.3.2 Prepare themoldfortest byfillingwithdrycrushed stone coarse aggregate meetingthe grading requirements of SpecificationC33sizeNo.57,25.0to4.75mm[1in.toNo.4] orNo.67,19.0to4.75mm[ 3⁄4 in.toNo.4].Fillandcompact the mold by the rodding procedure specified in Practice C192/C192Mforcompressiontestspecimensusingthetampingrod, numberof layersand numberof strokes perlayer specified. It will generally not be possible to obtain the penetration of the tamping rodspecified in Practice C192/
5.5 Single-UseSheetMetalMolds—Moldsshallconformto the following additional requirements when light-gage sheet metalisthepredominantmaterialusedintheirconstruction: 5.5.1 MetalThickness —Thesidewallofsteelsheetmetal moldsshallbemanufacturedfromsheetmetalnot thinnerthan can-makingqualityblackplateandshallhaveaminimummetal thicknesscorrespondingtothatof48.5-kg[107-lb]blackplate, whichis approximately 0.300mm [0.0118 in.] thick or30 1⁄2 gage. The metalfor the bottom of the mold shallhavea minimumthicknessof0.23mm[0.009in.](Note6). 5.5.2 BottomDesign—Thebottomshallbesodesignedthat it will beflushwith the bottom ofthe side wall withina toleranceof2mm[ 1⁄16 in.].Aninsidecrimp,ifused,shall produceanindentationaroundthecircumferenceofthecylindernomorethan4mm[ 1⁄8 in.]intheverticalor5mm[ 3⁄16 in.]intheradialdirection. 5.5.3 Top Edge—Thetopedgeofthesidewallshallbe curledorbeadedtostrengthenthemoldandprotecttheuser fromsharpedges.Ifsuchbeadprotrudestotheinsideofthe

After rodding the final layer, empty the coarse aggregate,wipelightlywithadryclothandexaminethemold forphysicaldamage. 6.3.3 Aftercompletionof6.3.2,determine the massof the moldandrecordtothenearest0.004g/mm[0.1g/in.]ofmold height.Placethemoldonafirm,flatsurfaceandfillwithwater atroomtemperaturetoadepthof90to95%ofthemold height.Thenplacethemoldonthedialstand,coverwiththe glass or metal plate and record the initial length by dial micrometertothenearest0.025mm[0.001in.]. 6.3.4 Allow the mold to stand for 3 h and take a final reading of the micrometer. Examine and record any visible leakage.Emptywaterfromthemold,drylightlywithatowel andrecordthefinalmasstothenearest0.04g/cm[0.1g/in.]of moldheight. 6.3.5 Calculatethe elongationasthedifferencebetweenthe finallengthandinitiallength.Calculatetheabsorptionasthe differencebetweenthefinalmassandinitialmassofthemold. 6.3.6 Verifyall dimensionalrequirements. 6.4 WaterLeakageTestforReusableMolds: 6.4.1 Preparereusablemoldswith thesealanttobe used,if required.Fillmoldswithwatertoadepthof90to95%ofthe nominalheight.Subjectthemoldtotappingandjarringwhich isjudgedtobetypicalofwhatoccurswhenspecimensare moldedinaccordancewiththeapplicableprovisionsofPracticeC31/C31M or C192/C192M. 6.4.2 Onehourafter tapping,examineforvisible leakage.
8. 7. Samplingand Rejection 7.1 At least three single-use andreusablemolds shall be selectedatrandomfromeachshipmentbythepurchaserto ensurethatthemoldsarein compliancewiththisspecification. 7.2 Failureofanyoneofthethreemold stocomplywiththis specificationshallbebasisforrejectionoftheshipment.
