A podcast app might not sound like the most riveting UX, but Castro (page 28) is changing that. The polished interface will have you listening to even more downloads than before.
With so many interactive books on the App Store, Lochfoot (page 28) does a great job standing out. With its charming story and graphics, this is perfect bedtime reading.

“They can just use their desktop computer to do that.” This is a persistent misconception about apps that ignores the fact tablet sales have overtaken PC purchases. However, massive tech firms such as Facebook (page 6) and small start-ups like Jelly (page 23) are both producing services that are ‘mobile-only’. This issue we celebrate the 50 best apps ever (page 16) that have innovated ways to get the most out of your device. We also compare the games that make the most of touchscreen controls (page 38) and review apps like Freesat (page 24) and The Walk (page 31) that push the boundaries of what mobile can do. Fancy downloading any of the apps we’ve reviewed? Just tap the web address at the end of full-page and half-page reviews to open it in the App Store or Google Play Store automatically.

FACEBOOK LAUNCHES RADICAL NEW READER APP Coinciding with its tenth anniversary, social networking giant Facebook has launched a new app called Facebook Paper. The iPhone download is a departure from Facebook’s traditional role with a new look and a focus on reading news stories rather than connecting with friends. Paper has an immersive design with fullscreen, distraction-free layouts, notably excluding the adverts that were recently added to their main mobile app. Being Facebook, you can still use the app to view your friends’ status updates and photos, however its principal purpose is for discovering news stories from around the world. Similar to other news aggregators, Paper presents users with a choice of different sections, such as Headlines, Tech or Planet. Each section contains various news stories that have been picked by Facebook’s in-house editors, and users can choose which sections they’re most interested in to appear on the app’s start screen. The first product from Facebook’s new Creative Labs offshoot, Facebook Paper is exclusive to iPhone and only available in the United States for now. However, international users can still download it if they create a new iTunes log-in and register it as a US account. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that ‘fragmenting’ the social network’s services into different apps, such as Paper and the incredibly popular Facebook Messenger app, is the future of the company. However,
6
not all of their mobile spin-offs have been successful. Facebook Poke, a Snapchat-like service that allowed you to send messages that vanished after a few seconds, launched in December 2012 and was roundly derided. Facebook Home, a launcher that displayed status updates on the homescreen of Android phones was also a flop last year. These high-profile failures have also been followed by claims that the social network as a whole is losing popularity. Researchers at Princeton University have speculated Facebook will lose 80 per cent of its users by 2017, going the same way as MySpace and Bebo. Another report that was published at the same time by University of London claimed the site is already ‘basically dead and buried’ among 16-18-year-olds. Still, early reviews for Paper suggest that Facebook may have opened a new chapter. Customer ratings at the time of writing – based on over 5,000 downloads within a week of its release – are positive, averaging at four-and-a-half stars. Critics have also praised its intuitive interface and compared its magazine-like design to Flipboard.

TOP STORIES
Though Paper is aimed at reading the news, you can still respond to Friend Requests, read your Messages, and check Notifications.
In a design that has drawn comparisons to Flipboard, Facebook Paper imitates a magazine with headline stories and large images. Tap on an article and it will ‘unfold’ like an envelope.
SLIDE DOWN SETTTINGS
Swipe downwards from the centre of the screen on any page, whether on the start page or in an article, to access Settings to manage the app.
CATEGORIES CAROUSEL
Swipe sideways on the main Headline image to quickly move between Categories, such as tech news or sports scores, and update the newsreel with related stories.
INTUITIVE NEWSREEL
Swipe sideways to view an endlessly refreshing reel of stories within a category. You only need to flick upwards to view an article in fullscreen mode.
PANORAMIC PHOTOS
When viewing horizontal images, simply tilt the screen left or right and the image will move side to side as though you’re looking through a window.

01
SECTIONS Pick the sort of stories you want to read by swiping down from the start screen to open Settings, then tap Edit Sections. Here you can scroll through a range of topics, such as Enterprise, Family Matters and Tech. Flick up to add topics to your newsreel and drag and drop Sections to rearrange their order.
02
LIKE PAGES You can’t influence the news stories that appear in Paper because the app’s editors curate them, but if you tap the Search bar in Settings you can look up Pages for your favourite news outlets and Like them. They will then get the Paper experience when viewed in the Facebook section of the app.
03
TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS In order to stay up to date on comments, posts, and other items that take place on Facebook, you will need to turn on notifications. The first item at the top of the Settings is Facebook Notifications. Turn it on and your notifications will start coming through Paper instead of the Facebook app.
04
READ LATER Before you leave settings, there’s one more thing you should turn on. Paper gives you the option to read articles later via a variety of services. Paper works with Pocket, Instapaper and more – all you have to do is log in and start saving items to enjoy those longer reads at a time of your choosing.

GET IN SHAPE WITH NUTRACHECK
This virtual weightwatching group gets real life results, says Nutracheck MD Tim Vryenhoef
CALORIE COUNTER + Scan barcodes for quick calorie counting and track your weight loss in-app. Additional features are available by subscription. O iPhone+ | iOS 6.0 | Freemium | v3.1.2 http://bit.ly/calcountios O Android | OS 2.2 | Freemium | v2.2.148 http://bit.ly/calcountand
Like Spotify for slimming, Nutracheck offers a variety of ways to track your eating habits – dependent on how much you want to spend. The free download Calorie Counter + for iOS and Android includes a barcode scanner to find out what’s in your meal, but a subscription grants you access to nutritionists and fitness experts, plus a community of users for emotional support – even a live mobile weigh-in. With the launch of a new iPad version of Calorie Counter +, we chatted with Nutracheck.co.uk’s managing director Tim Vryenhoef. How does Nutracheck distinguish itself from other calorie counting apps? We seek to distinguish ourselves by being the easiest calorie counter and food diary out there. We have unique features like our food database, which is the UK’s largest with over 140,000 foods, all with UK weights and servings. We use picture search in the food diary as photos make it faster to find what you ate. There’s the option to keep a picture food diary, which some users find more visually engaging. Plus we have a unique feature called Live Club Weigh-in – it’s the traditional slimming class weigh-in, only online. You choose an avatar and queue up with other members to jump on the virtual scales. What do users get from a Nutracheck subscription? There are two options – App-only membership (£3.99 for 30 days) or Complete membership, which includes website and app (£8.99 for 30 days). Users have unlimited access for five days to try it. After this, the app is free to use, but you’re restricted to five food diary entries a day. As well as picture food and exercise diary, a subscription includes a live club weigh-in, food swap tool, an option to contact our nutritionists and fitness expert and get a personal response, emotional eating support – including access to our UK call centre – and eating guides. We also promise that your data is never passed on and a service that is free of advertising.
ABOVE Users can find support from the active Nutracheck forums Can you tell us how the app works in relation to the desktop service? The app can be used successfully on its own, but we encourage users to choose the complete Nutracheck membership (with website) if they are serious about their weight loss. The app is ideal for use throughout the day to keep your diet on track, but for weighing in, joining the community, getting expert advice and reviewing your weekly progress, the website offers a much richer experience. How much input do the nutritionists and fitness experts have into the app? We have worked with Dr Ian Campbell, National Obesity Forum Founder for the past nine years and his input helped to shape the proposition from the start, when we launched the UK’s first diet mobile app in 2005. Our nutritionists and fitness continue to influence development of new features. In the weight loss sector, credibility is everything as there are so many fad diets and unsubstantiated claims. For us, using an evidence-based approach was essential – there are lots of studies to show keeping a food diary works. We differentiate ourselves by offering fad-free, sensible advice. Nutracheck has updated to support iPad. What’s the advantage of a tablet version? It’s a native app so we’ve made the best use of the extra screen space. It enabled us to add picture search results – like our online diary – so it’s faster to find what you ate in the food database. Photos of the food is one of our USPs. Does the Android app also work on tablet? Not yet. We’re currently working on an app for Android tablets that’ll be available later this year.

MASTER CHORDS AND SCALES BEFORE RECORDING A HIT TRACK 01 The basics There are quite a few teaching apps available, but we opted for Guitar Lessons by Howcast. Amiable tutor Ivan Max stars in a range of video lessons, starting with how to hold the guitar and plectrum properly, plus stringing and tuning.
02 Get strumming You can play the lessons in any order, so we skip ahead to open chords and basic playing and are soon strumming away – and it doesn’t actually sound too bad. We’d need a lot more practice to master scales and advanced techniques, though.
03 Play a song Now that we’ve learned a few chords and strums, we decide to have a go at playing a real song. Ultimate Guitar Tabs offers lists of chords and tabs for around 800,000 tunes. You can auto-scroll them and even play along to music on your device.
04 Start riffing The main riff in You Really Got Me by The Kinks seems a good place to start. We’re soon sliding our left hand up and down the fretboard for the F5 and G5 chords and it’s sounding good, although our fingers hurt!
05 On the record When it comes to recording our playing, we stick with the familiar GarageBand. We can either record via the mic (good for acoustic guitars) or plug in an electric model via one of many adaptors to use the app’s amps and effects pedals. 06 Start a band Having laid down our first track of chords, we loop it in the Tracks view so it plays continuously. We then use this as an accompaniment while we attempt to play a solo. We can also add drums, bass etc to make it sound like a full band.
FINAL THOUGHT
While it takes years of practice to become a top guitarist, you can get off to a good start using apps. The Howcast videos are great for beginners and cover all the essentials for getting started. Using tab sheets to play along to songs you know is also good way to improve your technique and build up your song repertoire – but don’t forget to record your efforts so you can analyse your performance. Apps can help you with all of these aspects, so you’ll be making music in no time.

CONNECT YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA TO YOUR SMARTPHONE WITH WI-FI If you’re one of the many people not ready to surrender your digital camera to the iPhoneography revolution, Eye-Fi may well provide just the solution you’re after. The Eye-Fi Mobi SD card beats the iPhone at its own game, making your digital camera smarter by enabling it with Wi-Fi. With a wireless connection, you can ditch the clumsy cables and transfer all of your photos instantly to your iOS or Android device, making it easy to upload your camera’s photos straight to Flickr or Instagram – or even just touch it up with one of the many available photo-editing apps. The Mobi SD card will also boost the memory of your digital camera, ranging from 8 to 32 gigabytes. This will give your camera exceptional performance, as well as the option to capture HD video, low light and fast action shots. To set up your Mobi, you will need to download the Eye-Fi app from the App Store or Google Play and enter an activation code, but after that you can connect it to as many gadgets as you like. Because the Mobi is a hotspot unto itself, your gear doesn’t even need to be on the same network, or even in range of a router. Mobi Wi-Fi cards normally start at £41.99/$49.99, but we have three 8GB Wi-Fi-enabled Mobi SD smart cards to give away. STELLE THE PILLAR WIRELESS SPEAKER An understated design available in many colours, The Pillar fits easily with any room decor. The main speaker sits on top, firing upwards to disperse the deep, bassy sound it produces, and does a good job of doing so. On the subject of bass, the subwoofers are down at the bottom of the speaker, so the vibrations fire out through the surface it’s stood on, adding to the listening experience. The Pillar uses Bluetooth, which has its moments when it comes to connections, but overall this is an impressive piece of audio equipment.

GOO.EY iPAD CASE
A piece of genius design that will have you scratching your head as to how exactly it works. In short, this is a grip that enables you to stick your iPad to a glossy surface for viewing and use purposes. Think sticking it to the train window on the commute home so you can watch a video, or on the kitchen fridge while you’re cooking. Impressively, it does this without leaving any sort of residue on your device. Whether you really need it is debateable, but it’s a clever piece of creativity.

SCOSCHE RH656MD HEADPHONES Lightweight and comfortable, these Scosche headphones also pack a solid audio punch. The noise cancelling is very good, and there’s an in-line control to handle volume as well as any incoming calls that might interrupt your music. Design-wise perhaps there is more to be desired; they feel quite flimsy and plastic, which might see you taking extra care. When turned on though, there is plenty to be happy about thanks to good audio with little distortion in the middle ranges.

GRIFFIN MOTO TC RALLY
A remote control car that doesn’t just look very cool, it packs in some seriously great features. The Moto TC Rally has a clever game mode where the car can detect impact and damage, changing handling accordingly. There’s a free app you can download to steer your car, with a connection established via Bluetooth. Yes, the outer body is a flimsy plastic that doesn’t look or feel great, but the collision technology game mode makes up for its aesthetic shortcomings.

HOPSTOP TRANSIT
Have you ever wanted to learn a second language? Duolingo for iPhone, iPad and Android will help you master the vocabulary and subtleties in a fun and engaging way. Resembling a light-hearted memory game setup, you can learn one of five languages through multiple-choice questions and interactive quizzes. As well as typing out correct spellings, you improve your pronunciation by speaking into your device’s microphone. However, as this language app is designed for mobile use, it lets you toggle these options on and off if you’re working hands-free or on a crowded bus. To make it feel even more like a videogame, you can compete against your Facebook friends and see who scores the most points by completing tutorials. Adding an element of jeopardy, you have a limited number of lives, so you do have to focus on a test – if you fail too many times, you’ll have to resit a module. It will guide you through basic grammar and teach you key phrases until you’re ready to try your hand at translating an entire website. Perhaps best of all, Duolingo really is free – there are no in-app purchases or subscriptions anywhere to be seen, just fun, free learning. OiPhone+ | iOS 6.0 | Free OAndroid | OS 2.2 | Free

The best alternative to your native camera app, VSCO Cam is a truly great option if you want to take high-quality photos before going on to edit them. VSCO Cam gives you better control over shooting photos with the option to lock focus and exposure of an image by moving circles around the screen. Toggling the flash on and off and adding a grid to centralise the image are also much more simply done than in the iPhone’s native Camera app. After that, VSCO Cam lets you edit basic elements such as the temperature, exposure, contrast, cropping, and rotating natively. Along with that, you can apply a selection of gorgeous filters. If the ones that come for free aren’t enough, you can also buy packs or individual filters to add to your library. While VSCO Cam has no network of its own, it will let you share pictures via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and email. You can also interact with a community of other users with the hashtag #VSCOCam. JELLY
TWITTER CO-FOUNDER’S NEW NETWORK IS OFF TO A WOBBLY START Wobbling its way onto the iPhone and Android is this new social app by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. With Jelly you can share images, perform internet searches and ask other users for answers to questions that can be difficult to find via Google. Rivalling popular app Quora, this Q&A-based search engine taps into your social networks but doesn’t lend itself as well to discussion. Jelly wants you to ask a question, get an answer and move on – and it works well to a degree. To get started, you point your phone’s camera at an object (or choose an image from your Camera Roll or Google Images) and use it within a post. For instance, you may take a photo of a T-shirt and want to know its brand. A traditional search could be difficult but by posting the image to Jelly, someone in cyberspace may know the answer and tell you. On top of cropping and editing images, you can draw on photos, highlighting specific aspects for the purpose of your search. We were able to jump to features in an instant and found it easy to answer other people’s questions too.
PROS/CONS
V It lets you search for
things that would be difficult otherwise V The app is easy to navigate and use W Sometimes you don’t get any answers W Occasionally the replies can be abusive
But we did find that not all of our questions were answered. Given that we often post questions to Facebook and Twitter and get quick answers from friends and followers, there is little reason, we surmised, to involve a third party when we can just as easily use existing social media apps and our own established networks. We also saw elements of abuse in the answers to questions posed by other users. Such incidents can be reported and this is something that comes with the territory of social networks but it is unwelcome nonetheless. Still, with a bigger community, Jelly could be the next big thing. Potentially the next social networking sensation. It is well designed, fun and it can be quick. It does need more users, but that will surely come with time. OiPhone | iOS 6.1 | Free | v1.0.1 http://bit.ly/jellyios OAndroid | OS 4.0 | Free | v1.0.27 http://bit.ly/jellyand

While it usually offers a choice of recording one episode or the whole series, we found it a bit hit and miss. You can access all the recordings on your box from the Saved Items section.
The TV Guide could be improved, though. It shows Now & Next, while swiping left brings up later shows for a single channel at a time, so it’s difficult to plan your viewing. Swiping right, however, reveals earlier shows on certain channels that you can watch on demand. A more handy feature is the gesturecontrolled playback; tap to pause, swipe left and right to rewind and fast-forward, or up and down to change channel. Or, if you prefer, use the remote-style buttons provided. A handy remote/recording app that works well, although there are still a few issues that need ironing out. CAN YOU ESCAPE 2
THE LONG-AWAITED PUZZLE SEQUEL HAS FINALLY ARRIVED Can You Escape 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to Can You Escape, the popular puzzle game. The objective is simple: find the hidden objects to reach the next level. Logic is the main skill required here, so if you struggle with these types of puzzles, you
might find this game tests your patience. As a bonus (or a hindrance, depending on the type of gamer you are) the app doesn’t allow you to skip levels, meaning you have to work through the game methodically in order to complete it. A big letdown for the app at this stage is that only the first eight levels are available

ABOVE Find objects to escape the room to play – the other seven are still currently in development, so you may find that the game comes to a shuddering halt for a few months until the next few levels are released. Can You Escape 2 is free but by default has advertisements. You can remove these for just £0.69/$0.99 in-app, and it’s well worth doing so as you gain some extra screen real-estate for gameplay and it prevents video adverts from appearing sporadically when you press either the Help or Settings icon. This is a fun and challenging way to spend some time – but it falls short of being a truly great game until all levels are available to play. An addictive app where logic is the name of the game – but it is worth investing in the ad-free version for better gameplay. WORLD OF CHEESE HD
LIFESUM
This game looks like it has been designed for children thanks to the cute characters and colourful graphics, but when you start the first level and begin to scratch your head immediately, realisation dawns. You have to find hidden cheese in each location and it’s very easy to get immersed. A surprisingly intriguing game. A challenging puzzle game that will definitely tax your brain.
Lifesum is a solution designed around what you eat and do. It includes a huge number of areas for you to manage such as barcode scanning food before you eat it, exercise tracking and a personal weight plan. Parts are automated and some areas are manually controlled, but it is pleasingly designed and does what it needs to. A subscription plan is required. A complete solution for those who want to track their food intake as well as exercise.

MAKR
Yalo is taking a new approach to cheap mobile calling by doing away with the need for calling cards. Through a monthly subscription, you can call abroad very cheaply and if you need to make lots of these calls, the savings could be immense. Handily, the person you’re calling doesn’t need to be a Yalo user. It’s likely that most users will have little need for this service, but it is easy to use and the call quality is good, although not all of the time. Call quality can be low at times, but the potential savings here are huge. Worth a try.
Niche social networks are common, but most fail to deliver an experience that is both wide-ranging and enjoyable to use. CircleMe, however, will connect you with other people who have similar interests immediately and the result is an experience that is fulfilling, fun and, at times, quite surprising in how effectively it works. With its beautiful interface that is made for exploring, there is a lot to gain from the CircleMe app. A brilliant app for connecting with likeminded people.
Makr offers a unique approach to creating new things and learning. There are many design templates included and you can gain inspiration in almost every corner, making it an interesting and educational experience. However, some of the designs can be quite difficult to fathom and making the transition to the real world is not always as easy as it may seem on an iPad. Some tweaks are needed for this to be a real contender but the potential is definitely there. Lots of design potential here, but the implementation could be a little more logical.

A spin-off from David Attenborough’s recent Sky TV programme set in the National History Museum, this app lacks the wow factor of that show’s stereoscopic 3D, yet offers its own educative excitement. At first glance, there doesn’t seem to be much going on as you swipe between static photos of the fossilised exhibits of ten extinct animals, but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover a treasure trove of information complemented by some CGI to bring the beasts back to life. In the default day mode, with its static photos, a pullout menu lets you view information on the current exhibit, including how and where it was discovered – interesting, if a little dry. A timeline option shows you when all ten animals became extinct. You can also bring up a rotatable 3D map of the museum, where you can input symbol codes – found in the real museum when you go and visit – for six of the exhibits to unlock extra video clips. However, it’s when you swipe down the screen to move into night mode that things become a bit more exciting – and rather eerie, reminding us of the Night At The Museum movies. Each exhibit starts off shrouded in darkness until you hold your finger on the screen to shine a torch around, thereby revealing a CGI animation of the animal and starting an audio commentary about it by Attenborough. There are also different options in the sidebar menu for night mode, including a view of the security camera room. The second option brings up bite-size facts and figures about the

CASTRO – HIGH FIDELITY PODCASTS PODCASTS THAT LOOK AS GOOD AS THEY SOUND
ABOVE You can tell from the interface the app has been designed specifically for iOS 7
LOCHFOOT
The developers of Castro are keen to point out that this was an app designed for iOS 7. In truth they didn’t have to say anything at all; just taking a tour of this app tells you all you need to know. The opacity and layering that is a hallmark of Apple’s new look is clear to see, as are some of the features that Castro offers. Taking advantage of background updates, your podcast list is constantly being refreshed, and the app also has a News section where all the latest episodes of the most popular shows are kept. It’s such a clean and tidy interface that Castro makes you want to explore, subscribing and listening to even more podcasts – and surely that can only be a good thing given the subject matter it is supporting. You can listen to episodes without having to subscribe to get a flavour of the show, and you can also mark an episode as ‘Listened’ to maintain your housekeeping and save yourself checking where you got up to. Crucially, as well as streaming podcasts, Castro supports offline playback, meaning you can listen to your episodes regardless of where you are.

PART BIGFOOT, PART NESSIE, LOTS OF FUN There is no shortage of imagination in the App Store these days, thanks to the power of the devices that developers have to work with. Now, every single story and children’s book can be brought to life and made more vivid than ever before. Lochfoot is the perfect example of this; it’s a fresh, new story that is given life as an interactive story, telling the tale of two youngsters who come across the son of the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot when they wander from their parents’ campsite.
Though there isn’t a huge amount of interactivity to speak of – other than being able to tap speech bubbles to hear characters repeat what they said on that page – the colourful art style really does stand out and makes up for it. There is a narration to go along with the text, which is kept to short bursts, and this keeps the story accessible to readers of all ages. However, the narrator lacks any real passion or animation in their tone, which negates the story and action on screen and makes things feel a little monotonous. You can’t help but feel it detracts from the story, which in itself is a lot of fun for younger readers. Because of the short attention span of its audience, Lochfoot isn’t overly long, but readers should still find plenty to love about this story. Not over-complicated but still offering plenty of fun, this makes for a fun and endearing bedtime story.

TILLY AND FRIENDS
ADD MUSIC TO VIDEO
For musicians, the idea of being able to create and save chords on the go is a tempting one, and being able to add lyrics into the equation is even better. However, the way this app works is a bit of a disappointment, as it can be clunky and at times quite confusing. It needs to offer more instructions and, more importantly, offer users the ability to manage what they have created better. More work is needed in order to provide a real benefit. A good idea, but the interface is quite confusing. It could use a few improvements.
Tilly and Friends is a popular TV show and the experience has been transferred well to an app with all of the personality and fun intact. There are many different games to play and most children will have no problem understanding what to do, but it does work better on a tablet screen. The simple games will keep kids happy and educated for hours. A selection of games that are both educational and fun. It’s also very well presented.
The way this app helps you to quickly add music to any video on your phone or tablet is impressively efficient and there is no doubt that it works well. For those who only require this task it is ideal, but for others it may feel bereft of flexibility and the features they need to create videos to share with others. Extra features would be useful here. This app does one thing very well, but is that going to be enough for most people?

Fed up with shooting videos in the wrong orientation? The clever chaps over at Evil Window Dog have conjured up a magic solution in the form of Horizon. No matter which way your iPhone camera is angled when you’re shooting video, the end result will always be horizontal for optimum viewing. Horizon’s user interface is extremely easy to use – all the functions you need are accessible via icons that are positioned around the main app screen. There are lots of features on offer within

It’s really easy to switch, so you can quickly change the quality of videos without too much hassle. If you don’t want to take advantage of Horizon’s automatic horizontal videos, you can always disable it and just shoot video as normal. But why would you want to do that? Upon opening a recipe, you’re presented with a simple list of text steps, unaccompanied by any pictures. Tap a step to enlarge it, with the relevant ingredients shown handily underneath, and swipe between steps – unfortunately, the ability to do so without touching the screen with floury fingers, as in the previous version of the app, has been removed. The new Quick Pin feature could prove useful if you’re baking multiple items, though, enabling you to pin the relevant recipes to a sidebar for easy access. There are also three nameable timers as well as a shopping list facility. The recipes are very appetising, but we’d like some step-by-step photos and the return of non-touch swiping.

The method used to help you understand your progress over time is also extremely impressive. For focused exercise you need look no further than this app.
Substitutions is not a classic recipe app, but rather an add-on that you can use if you feel a potential kitchen disaster may be looming. It offers a variety of ingredients that can be used if you find you are missing something crucial, and the interface makes finding what you need as easy as possible. If you regularly park your car in hard-tofind locations or very large car parks, apps like this will ensure that you can find it when you need to. Included is GPS monitoring, ticket timing and helpful directions back to your car. Unfortunately, the interface is not the most appealing – especially up against some stiff competition in the App Store – and it would be nice to see the presentation spruced up a little to make it feel a little more professional. LANDMARK TRUST
8MM VINTAGE CAMERA
LULLABY BABY – SOUNDS TO HELP YOUR CHILD SLEEP
There is no doubting the quality of the presentation and the efficient way this app details all of the available Landmark Trust locations. It almost feels like a high-quality magazine in use, but we have a slight concern about the price, if only because this is a promotional app and we wonder if apps like this would be downloaded more often if they were free. Still, it is impressively produced. A professional way to sell a service, but the price is probably a little high for most.
To call this app a novelty would be to ignore the clever way it reproduces the classic 8mm camera effect. With seven lenses and ten film types to play with, it is a real joy to capture a quick clip in this well-made interface. Additional features include a jitter effect, giving you the authentic skipping of images as well as a projector sound effect. Even better, you can apply these effects and add music to existing clips, which may be one of the best uses of all. A very clever app. A very accurate representation of the traditional 8mm cameras. It’s useful and good fun to use.
At first glance Lullaby Baby is quite similar to many other apps that are designed to send your child off to sleep, but the quality and soothing nature of the sounds included here are exceptional. They can be set to fade out after a specified period and the best bit is the app will fade the sounds back in if it detects your child waking up. It has one task to do and it does it supremely well using surprising features. A priceless app for the parents of younger children.

WRITER PRO IMPROVE YOUR WRITING WORKFLOW AND AVOID BEING DISTRACTED
At around the time of the iPad’s inception, an app arrived that caught the imagination of writers. Called iA Writer, it was, some would say, akin to the ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’. In stripping away the various elements of distraction that tend to clutter a typical word processor (formatting buttons, sharing options and so on), iA Writer was a simple editor. It was making a feature out of lacking features, so to speak. But it worked. We found ourselves focusing much more on the words rather than how they were presented on the screen. It became an iPad classic. So we look at Writer Pro with some skepticism. Pro? Doesn’t that complicate things? Actually, it doesn’t. At the bottom of the main screen there are five options that help create a sense of workflow. You are able to view your most recent documents, make notes, write, edit and read. Functionally, each of these options is identical but you go through these stages and expand upon your work until it’s in the final stage. In some respects though, Writer Pro is not strictly without distraction. The keyboard has a fair amount on it besides the important Qwerty keys. You can use the iPad’s microphone to dictate your words and call up a selection of Emojis. You can add punctuation, skip from word to word
PROS/CONS
V It does well at

and swipe across to see character and word counts. Tapping the screen gives cut, copy and paste options and you can also define words. The app then allows you to print, share your work across social networks or email and even open the text in another app entirely. For the privilege, you do have to stump up lots of money. In a world where Pages is free on newer iDevices, the cost is mind-boggling for what, dare we say, is a rather pretentious offering when all is said and done. Yet, it has proven to be useful. It’s great that it syncs between other iOS devices and it’s good to have the writing process laid bare and yet feel somewhat more organised. Still, you’ll likely have to be a very keen writer to justify the asking price. A very good expansion on the original but remains expensive for what is, ultimately, a fresh spin on a text editor. Nevertheless, it will work well for some. OiPhone+ | iOS 7.0 | £13.99/£19.99 | v1.0 http://bit.ly/writerproios

PEEK CALENDAR
MAKE YOUR DAY MANAGEABLE WITH THIS SIMPLE CALENDAR
Square Mountain’s Peek Calendar is designed to turn the stressful chore of managing your calendar into an enjoyable experience. Leading with a minimalist design, the emphasis is on being hands-on with your calendar – literally. Swipe, press, hold and tap for a unique calendar management experience. Peek is extremely easy to set up and use. When you launch the app for the first time, Peek offers you the opportunity to import any existing calendars on your iPhone into the app and then you’re all set to go. It’s worth mentioning here that Peek is not designed for power users – so if you juggle a high volume of appointments, this isn’t the app for you. The main interface displays four days with a week view running across the bottom of the screen. The interface is designed to behave like an accordion – tap on a day and the appointments for that day will unfold on the
screen. Swipe left from the right-hand side to access a pop-out menu with a list of gestures and fully customisable settings for the app. Overall, Peek is a sleek-looking app, which has clearly been carefully designed with the casual calendar user in mind. If time management sends a chill down your spine, give Peek a try. Peek brings a sense of intuition and style to the task of managing your diary, so keeping on top of everything is as simple as can be.

SCREENS VNC
CONTROL AND VIEW YOUR DESKTOP VIA YOUR DEVICE Being able to access your PC from your iPhone or iPad may sound like the stuff of sci-fi legend, but Screens VNC is one of a few apps that allows you to do just that. It takes a bit of fiddling to get it to work – you’ll need to download an app available from the developer’s website that enables you to access a Mac – but once that’s done, you’re ready to go. The app displays your full desktop within the screen of the iPhone or iPad and you are able
to zoom in and out. If there is a text entry box, then you can tap on it and call up a keyboard to input words. You can also take screenshots and create shortcuts that you can use from the toolbar within the app, making life easier. The ability to paste items, send text to your computer and utilise the AirPlay mirroring so that your computer’s display can be sent to a television makes this a rather versatile app. You could use it for presentations, for example, without having to cart your computer around. And that’s the advantage: carrying just a laptop around can be cumbersome, so it’s great to have a neat, albeit expensive, solution such as this. With it you are able to keep an eye on your desktop, open programs and make amendments from any location in the world, which more than justifies the money. Compatible with Macs, Windows and Linux, Screens VNC can revolutionise your workflow and is worth the investment. OiPhone+ | iOS 7.0 | £13.99/$19.99 | v3.1.7 http://bit.ly/screensios

Writing a CV is never easy and this app attempts to complete most of the hard work for you by utilising information you provide on your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles. The main problem with this approach is that the end result can appear a little on the formulaic side and some of the features did not work when we tried to customise it more. MY NOTEBOOK
GOODNOTES 4 – NOTES & PDF CHORE-INATOR
This app’s ability to deal with all types of media – including photos, sketches and recordings – is impressive, and it will enable you to keep all of the important information that you require together. The interface is clean enough to let the data shine through and, best of all, there is also a very small learning curve. It would be nice, however, for the app to have a bit more of a professional finish to its design. A flexible note-taking app that is particularly well suited to the larger iPad screen.
We are used to seeing apps that allow annotations on PDFs and images on tablets, but few pull off the trick on smaller-screened phones. GoodNotes 4, however, manages both types of device perfectly and enables you to organise all of your documents and add handwritten annotations while making it all feel completely natural. Choose from a number of different papers and back up your data to the supported services. This is one of the best mobile document apps available. Precise document editing has finally been perfected.
Chore-inator is a very useful tool for parents who have to battle with their children to get household chores done. The app allows users to build in rewards for completed chores to provide more incentive and also use photos and a visually stimulating schedule to make the entire process feel less like hard work. Some may think it to be too rigid, but if users stick to it, the results will be good and should make life easier for everyone. A visual way to keep children focused on completing their chores that actually works.

CUT THE ROPE 2
OM NOM RETURNS WITH NEW FRIENDS
“Things have been tweaked for the better, with a little more logic to the levels as well as plenty of new elements to get excited about ” Cut the Rope has already taken its place among the most popular iOS games of all time thanks to the hard-to-perfect formula of simple gameplay combined with teasing puzzles. A follow-up to the original game was never in doubt and, following a minor reboot in the shape of Cut the Rope: Time Travel, we now have this full sequel. Things have been tweaked for the better, with a little more logic to the levels as well as plenty of new elements to get excited about. Level design now much more closely resembles that of a platform game, with Om Nom always sat on a level of some kind; in early levels slopes towards him ensure that any candy that drops in the vicinity will roll towards him. This does make gameplay easier as it brings an end to timing the cut of a swinging candy from a rope to perfection in order to get it to drop into Om Nom’s mouth. This feels more accessible and, as a result, more fun. Another change in perspective that has helped to refresh the gameplay is the ability to move Om Nom to the candy, as the little monster becomes mobile for the first time. Use Om Nom’s new friends – whose own introduction is a source of excitement for franchise fans – and their special skills to help transport Om Nom to the candy. Players can now also drop elements such as balloons into levels in order to help reach a solution, and there are now Level Solutions that will walk you through, step-by-step everything you need to do in order to complete a level you’re stuck on. The star collection system is still in place, but watch out for the new clovers to collect in some levels as well. For the more light-hearted player there are also outfits, namely hats, to adorn Om Nom with to customise your play a little more. All the character that made the original app such a success is still here, and it seems that has been built upon, with a few gameplay tweaks to make the sequel a worthy step-up. A nice upgrade on the original, with new characters and perspectives to try out. OiPhone+ | iOS 4.3 | £0.69/$0.99 | v1.0.1 http://bit.ly/cuttherope2ios

REPUBLIQUE
KEEP HOPE ALIVE IN THIS NEW STEALTH THRILLER Republique has been hotly anticipated by gamers for over two years. It was a Kickstarter success story with a twist as it was pitched by a team that has worked on some of the biggest console franchises – Metal Gear Solid and Halo among them – but they’re now striking out on their own as an indie developer. This mix of creative experience and freedom shines through in this unique stelath thriller. The player takes the role of a hacker who has managed to break into a repressive regime’s surveillance system, and the aim is to
guide Hope, an escaped political prisoner, to freedom. The gameplay setup really thrives here, as you use the network of CCTV cameras to see the route ahead and plan Hope’s path safely. The entire game is a constantly changing puzzle as guards patrol and doors require hacks to open. It sounds complicated, but the one-touch tap-to-animate controls make it easy enough once you get going. It could be argued that sometimes things get a little heavy – having to check five cameras every time you go around a corner can get tedious, for example. Taking the lead from other console-quality mobile games like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, £2.99/$4.99 will only buy you the first episode. A full season pass is priced £10.49/$14.99. Intense, gorgeous and a stepup from anything else on iOS; Republique was worth the wait.

JOE DANGER INFINITY DEXTEROUS DAREDEVIL FUN
Joe Danger Touch, the previous instalment in this series, provided great fun for something so effortlessly simple. Fortunately the sequel is following the exact same model, but ups the wacky factor for an extra dash of entertainment. For our hero Joe has been
shrunk down to the size of an action figure, but that won’t stop him from carrying out his death-defying runs on his trusty motorcycle. As the player, you have to guide Joe through using the simple touch controls to time jumps over obstacles in order to score points and collect coins. There are extra letters and stars
“Following the exact same model of the original, this sequel ups the wacky factor for an extra dash of entertainment ”
ABOVE The aim of each level is to avoid the obstacles and gather as many coins as you can
40
ABOVE Players tap the screen in order to make Joe jump, with points awarded for air time to gather along the way, as well as traps to open using a second finger, and this makes the game feel just a bit less casual as it suddenly requires two hands to play. This is not a bad thing – it draws you in and blurs the outside world the way a good mobile game should. Having said that, the brightly coloured 3D world of a child’s bedroom that is the setting for the game will have already grabbed your attention, and playing this game on Retina devices is a fulfilling experience for the senses. In short, there are not too many better ways to zone out of the rainy commute home. In fact, Joe Danger Infinity is enjoyable enough to make you want that journey last a little longer. KAMI
COLOSSATRON: MASSIVE WORLD THREAT DEFEND YOUR
Racing games that have a cartoon theme are common, but the graphics and the way this one plays aren’t. It is a sublime experience that will keep you hooked thanks to the consolequality build. Featuring your favourite Sonic stars, it doesn’t feel like your average racer. There is the occasional bug present, however, which needs to be sorted to make it a five-star app. A brilliant mobile racing game with the occasional quirk.
Kami is unusual in that it is a game that will have you scratching your head right away but without you ever feeling stressed. You do have to think hard about each level, but the animations and soothing sounds help to create an atmosphere you will want to revisit time and time again. Rarely has a simple game felt so challenging and immersive at the same time. It is superb. Feel both enchanted and challenged at the same by Kami.
This is a difficult game to explain, which only serves to highlight how original it is. In essence, you have to control a giant robotic snake and smash and fight your way through cities. It is great fun at first, but unfortunately over a fairly short space of time it can be difficult to progress without having to spend money through in-app purchases. An unusual gaming experience that works well but pushes the in-app purchases a lot.

THE OWLMAN OF CONSTRUCTION BEN 10 MAWNAN SMITH SIMULATOR 2014 CAVERN RUN
There is an obvious retro element to this game, which is highlighted by the dark interface and subtly scary and atmospheric music that plays in the background. You have to crack a series of puzzles to progress and some thought is needed as the answers are rarely obvious – but the end result is a challenge that feels deep enough to keep you playing until you finish it. An intriguing gaming experience. A quirky adventure game bolstered by a series of challenging puzzles.
There are some games that should logically sit on consoles and desktop computers and this is one of them. Nevertheless, the developer has somehow managed to make it perfectly playable on the smaller screen and given us a raft of construction features to play with. Everything on offer here, from the graphics and controls to the longterm playability, is up there with the very best. Brilliant. A highly ambitious game that pulls it all off with aplomb.
Any game based around Ben 10 is obviously aimed at children, but if you chose to ignore it completely you would be missing out on a fun experience. The controls are surprisingly original because you have to draw lines (platforms) on screen for Ben to run over, which helps make the game interesting to play. Still, as a platformer it can get a little repetitive after extended periods of play. An original game with unusual controls, but it can get quite repetitive over time.

TIP
Keep it simple You can use Onavo Extend simply as a data usage breakdown app if you don’t want to compress data. Just head over to your Settings menu and Set the Savings feature to Off.
COMPRESS DATA USAGE WITH ONAVO EXTEND
Get up to five times more from your monthly data plan without changing the way you use your phone The advent of 4G-compatible smartphones was a big leap forward for mobile use. Superfast download speeds boosted productivity and made media consumption on smartphones a breeze – but 4G also came at a price in the form of expensive monthly deals. Now, however, there’s no need to compromise. With Onavo Extend, big phone bills – along with slow internet speeds – could well be a thing of the past. Onavo Extend compresses any data you use over 4G, 3G, Edge and LTE networks, so you get a staggering five times more out of your monthly data plan. Working with text, images and video, Onavo even promises to save on the amount of data you use when you’re abroad – perfect if you’re worried about those over-the-top roaming charges. The way Onavo Extend works is by setting up its own virtual private network (VPN), automatically configuring a profile with your permission so that any data you receive from the internet is sent to Onavo’s cloudbased compression service first. Following that, the compressed data is sent back to your device, resulting in you using a much leaner, faster and more efficient version of the internet. In this tutorial we’re going to show you just how easy it is to set up Onavo Extend. You know how to download an app, so head off to the App Store and we’ll get started. You’ll need to agree to Onavo’s terms and conditions first, and it’s well worth a read through. The developer says it takes privacy seriously, so make sure you’re happy with exactly what the app does before you decide to commit.

Make the most of your monthly data with this top download OiPhone | iOS 6.0 | Free | v1.8.7 OAndroid | iOS 4.0 | Free | v1.4.1 -1ex
This is an app that could genuinely save you money. If you use it correctly, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t consider moving to a drastically cheaper monthly deal. Onavo gives you all the tools you could possibly need to combat heavy usage, compressing your data very effectively. We did, however, see clear evidence that the app gobbles up your battery life and we’d like to see a few more network providers jump on board – users in the UK are currently restricted to just Orange and Vodafone. Say a final goodbye to costly data packages with this great service – but it’ll cost you some battery life.
“Compressing any data you use over 4G, 3G, Edge and LTE, Onavo will help you get a staggering five times more out of your monthly data plan”

6 ONAVO COUNT
During the set up process you’ll be diverted to an Install Profile page. Tap Install and then Install Now. Next, type in your iPhone’s security passcode before tapping Done in the top-right to finish the installation.
You’ll want to use Onavo for a week to really be impressed by how much data you’ve saved. However, you can keep tabs by hitting Reports in the bottom-right. Your monthly usage is displayed in a simple chart.
You’ll notice a VPN icon has appeared somewhere in your phone’s menu bar. This icon tells you that Onavo is working on compressing your data. Other than that, you shouldn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
If you’re feeling really curious, head down and hit Session Breakdown to find out even more detailed information about how much Onavo is saving you. We’ve taken a closer look at this screen in our annotated image.
That is unless you’re surfing the web and come across some pixelated images. That’s Onavo cutting corners, but you can change the Image Quality feature in the app’s Settings menu to improve the visuals if you like.
If you’ve been impressed you’ll want to get Onavo Count from the App Store, which breaks down savings on a per-app basis. It’s colourful and very easy to use. Keeping an eye on your data has never been easier.
