YA JÑOPAVĪTA DHĀRAṆA KRAMAḤ
Sit facing the east do ācamanam and a ṅga-vandanam then hold the hands in brahm āñjali and repeat the sa ṅkalpam:—
Saṅkalpaḥ — asyāṁ śubha tithau bhagavat ā jñayā bhagavat kaiṅkarya
rūpeṇa | śrauta smārta vihita nitya karma anuṣṭhāna yogyatā sidhyartha ṃ brahma teja abhiv ṛdhyerthaṃ yajñopavīta dhāraṇaṃ kariṣye || OnthisauspiciousdaywiththesanctionoftheSupremeBeingandasservicetoHimalone,inorderto berituallyfittoperform berituallyf ittoperformallthedailyr allthedailyritualsordained itualsordainedbytheVedasandthe bytheVedasandtheSmritis,andtoin Smritis,andtoincreasemy creasemy BrahmicradianceInowdonthesacrificialthread.
Hold the sacred thread with the left hand over the pañcap ātra and the right hand palm upwards towards the ceiling and recite the mantra:—
yajñopavīta dhāraṇa mahāmantrasya; parabrahma ṛṣiḥ [touch the forehead] anuṣṭup chandaḥ [touch the mouth] paramātma devatāḥ [touch the heart] yajñopavīta dhāraṇe viniyogaḥ | ya ̱ ̱ jño ̱ ̱pa p ̱ a ̱vī̱ta taṃ pa ̍ra ̱ ̱ma maṃ pa ̱ ̱vitra vitra ̍ ṃ pra ̱ ̱ jāpa ̍te ̱ ̱r yat sa ̍ha ̱ ̱ jaṃ pura ̱ ̱st stā̎t | yuṣya ̍ṃ agri ̱ya yaṃ prati ̍muñca śu ̱ ̱ bhraṃ ya jñopav taṃ bala ̍ṃ astu teja ̍ḥ || ā̱yu ī̱ta ̍ Thissacredthread,supremelyholy,bornwithPrajapatiofyore,conducivetolonglife,andexcellent, wearthispuresacredthread;mayitconducetostrengthandvigour.
yajñopavīta yajñasya tvaṃ yajñopavītaṃ dhārayāmi.
wear the new thread. repeat the following saṅkalpam and repeat repeat the performance with a second thread. thread.

Śānnttii ppāṭhhaaḥ
Think of yourself, your loved ones and all beings and wish them well:—
bha ̱draṃ karṇe bhi ̍ ḥ śṛṇu ̱yāma ̍ devā bha ̱draṃ pa ̍śyemā̱kṣibhi ̱r-yaja ̍trāḥ | sthi ̱rair-aṅga ̎is-tuṣṭu ̱vāguṁ sa ̍sta ̱nū bhiḥ vyaśe ̍ma de ̱vahi ̍ta ̱ṁ yadāyu ̍ḥ || OGodsmaywewithourearslistentowhatisgood,andwithoureyesseewhatisgood,yeHolyOnes. eka-dantaṁ śūrpa-karṇam gaja-vaktraṁ mahodaram | pāśāṅkuśa-dharaṁ devaṁ dhyāyet siddhi vināyakam || I visualise Siddhi Vinayaka, elephant-faced,single tusked,with ears like winnowing baskets andan enormousabdomen,wieldingthenooseandthegoad.
1. Invocation oṁ bhūr bhuvas suvaḥ śrī mahā gaṇapataye namaḥ, dhyāyāmi, āvāhayāmi, sthāpayāmi, gandhākṣata puṣpāṇi samarpayāmi | 2. Seat
Place some akshata in front of the icon:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — āsanaṁ samarpayāmi
3. Water for washing the feet
Offer two spoons of water by touching it to the feet of the icon and then casting it into the receptacle:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — pādyaṁ samarpayāmi
4. Water for washing the hands
Offer one spoon of water by touching it to the right hand of the icon:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — arghyaṁ samarpayāmi
5. Water for sipping;
Offer three spoons of water by touching to the mouth of the icon:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — ācamanīyaṁ samarpayāmi
6. Water for bathing
Take a flower dip it in water and sprinkle on the icon:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — snānaṁ samarpayāmi snāna anantaraṁ punar ācamaniyaṁ samarpayāmi (offer three spoonfuls of water for sipping)
7. Clothing
Offer clothing or akshata:—

Offer a sacred thread or akshata :—

Offer ornaments or akshata:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — ā bharaṇa arthaṃ akṣatān samarpayāmi
10. Sandal Paste
Offer sandal paste on the forehead of the icon followed by kumkum:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — divya gandh ān samarpayāmi gandhasyopari kumkuma ṁ samarpayāmi
11. Garland
Offer a garland or a flower:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — puṣpa mālā samarpayāmi
12. Flowers
Offer flower petals while reciting the various names of the god:—

Offer incense by waving it in front of the icon in a clockwise motion three times:—

Offer a lamp by showing it to the icon:—

15. Food Offering
Offer some foodstuffs (2 bananas, sugar candy or raisins):—
Offer three spoonfuls of water:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — naivedyaṁ nivedayāmi
naivedya anantaraṁ punar ācamanīyaṁ samarpayāmi
16. Betel
Offer betel leaves and nuts:—
oṁ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ — tāmbūlaṁ samarpayāmi
17. Nirā janam Offer a camphor flame by waving it around in a clockwise direction three times while
repeating:—
oṁ ekadantāya vidmahe, vakra-tuṇḍāya dhīmahi, tanno danti pracodayāt || O ṁwecognisethe“Single-tusked-one”,wemeditateuponthe“Curved-trunk-one”,maythat“Tusker” enlightenus.

Offer three spoonfuls of water;

Take some flowers in the cupped hands and offer then at the feet of the icon;
ānanaṃ bhūtagaṇādi-sevitam, kapittha jambu phala-sāra-bhakṣaṇam | umā-sutaṃ śoka-vināśa-kāraṇaṃ namāmi vighneśvara pāda-paṅkajam || .gaj

oṁ vighneśvarāya varadāya sura-priyāya, lambodarāya sakalāya jagad-hitāya | nāgānanāya śruti-yajña-vibh ūṣitāya, gauri-sutāya gaṇanātha namo namaste || O ṁsalutationstoGaneshathesonofParvati,theonecaresforthewelfareoftheentireuniverse,the elephant-facedonewhois adornedbythe Vedasand byYajñas, thelordofobstacles,thebenefactor andbelovedofthegodswhohasapot-belly.
Prārthana — Prayer

I have no other refuge apart from you, you alone are my refuge, therefore out of your natural compassion,protectmeOGanesha.
āvāhanaṁ na jānāmi, naiva jānāmi pū janam | visarjanaṁ na jānāmi kṣamasva puruṣottama || 3 || I do not know the proper method of invoking or worshipping you, I also do not know the proper methodofvalediction,forgivemeOSupremeBeing.
mantra hīnaṃ kriyā hīnaṃ bhakti hīnaṃ vināyaka | yat kṛtaṃ tu mayā deva paripūrṇaṃ tad astu te || 4 || Thisceremonyislackingpropermantras,andmethodology,lackingalldevotion,whateverlittleI havedoneOGaneshamayitbeacceptedascompletebyyou.

viśvaksena sakala vibhuda prau ḍu-senādi nātham mudra cakra kara-kamala yuge śaṅkha-daṇḍau dadhānam | megha-śyāmaṁ sumaṇi mukuṭaṃ pīta-vastraṃ śubhāṅgam, dhyāyed devaṃ vijaya kāmaṁ sūtravatyai sametam || O Vishvaksena, Stalwart Commander in chief of the Spiritual Forces; with cautioning gesture, brandishingtheconch&discusinyourlotus-likehands;thecoloroftherain-cloud,withbejewelled diadem, garbedinyellowsilk, ofcomelylimbs,Imeditate uponyouwithyourconsort Sutravati,for theattainmentofvictory.

athātaḥ pravak ṣyāmi puṇyāhasya vidhi kramam | puk āraṃ pāpa nāśanaṃ syād ṇyak āraṃ deha śuddhidam || Now I shall declare the rite of sanctification (pu-nya-ha vacanam) 'Pu' indicates absolution of sins, 'nya' indicates physical purification
hak āraṃ sthāna-śuddhiḥ syāt puṇyāhaṃ tu vidh ī yate | sarva pāpaharaṃ caiva sarva siddhi pradāyakam || 'ha' indicates sanctification of space, this is the meaning of punyaha, It absolves one from all sins, and grants all success and prosperity.
nitye naimittike k āmye sthānabimbādi śuddhiṣu | athavā maṅgale k ārye puṇyāhaṃ tu samācaret || It should be performed at all obligatory, occasional and optional liturgies, Or else, on all auspicious occasions it should be properly done.

1. Sthaṇḍila Nirmāṇam. Where the fire is to be established an altar [stha ṇḍila] is to be prepared using rice flour. The dimensions should be one cubit square. If a ku ṇḍā is being used then rice flour is sprinkled on the bottom of the pit.
2. Parisamūham. The sthaṇḍila is to be smoothed down with the hand. (in a ku ṇḍa the debris is cleared from the mekhalas (steps). All acts are done from left to right in the case of the Devas, and right to left in the case of the manes.
3. Rekhā Kriya. Using the handle of the spoon draw three lines from West to East, and bisecting them from South to North. With the thumb and index finger of the right hand a pinch of earth is taken from the centre and cast towards the South-West.
4. Abhyuk ṣaṇam. The sthaṇḍila is sprinkled with water using a flower
5. Agni-sthāpanam. A few twigs are placed on the stha ṇḍile. The fire is kindled using a few camphor blocks in a copper dish, this is circled around the fire three times and then placed on top of the twigs on the sthaṇḍila.

6. Agnim Prajvalanam. The fire is fed with some more small twigs.
7. Paristaraṇam. Darbha grass in three or five layers is placed around the fire. In the East with the points to the North. In the South with the points to the East. In the West with the points to the North, and in the North with the points to the East.

8. Pātra Sādhanam. To the North of the fire on a layer of darbha grass arrange in pairs the vessels to be used. They are placed upside down; the spoons, ā jyasthāli, prok ṣaṇi pātra, praṇī tā patra and the bunch of fuel 12 sticks tied with a piece of string.
9. Brahma Varaṇam. On a seat to the South of the fire the Br āhmaṇa priest is asked to be seated.
asmin homa karmaṇi brahmāṇaṁ tvāṁ vṛṇe | If no brāhma±a priest is available then a kûrca (bunch of darbha) or a flower is placed on the seat and Brahma is invoked;

10. Prokṣaṇi pātra sādhanam The prok ṣaṇi pātra (vessel for sprinkling) is filled with water. Two pieces of darbha grass with their points in tact and about a span in length are used to purify the water. This water is then poured into the pra ṇī ta patra and then refilled.
11. Praṇītā patre Varuṇa āvāhaṇam. Ak ṣata and a flower is worshipped.

The ghee is purified in this manner. First check to see that there is no impure thing in the ghee. A pavitri made of two darbha blades is passed through it, the knot released and the pavitri is thrown into the fire. A few coals or burning sticks are removed from the fire and place to the South-east. The ā jyasthāli (ghee vessel) is placed thereupon and a burning blade of darbha grass (or a stick) is waved around it. The ā jya is then purified by showing the dhenu mudra. The coals are returned to the fire.
13. Sruk-sruvau Saṃskāra. The sacrificial ladles are taken and heated in the fire. They are wiped down with darbha grass, reheated and then sprinkled with water. They are placed to the right.
14. Paridhi Paridadh ānam. Four pieces of wood a cubit in length are placed around the fire.

Perform all the preliminary rites of the fire sacrifice. Perform the āghāra & ā jyabhāga. The Mānavaka takes a samit and places it on the fire saying adhehi after the Ācārya recites the following mantra;
ā̱yu ̱rdā deva ̍ ja ̱rasam gṛṇā̱no ghṛṯ a pra ̍tīko ghṛṯ a pṛ̍ṣṭho agne | ghṛṯ aṁ piba ̍nn amṛta ̱ṁ cāru ̱ gavya ̍ṁ pi ̱teva ̍ pu ̱traṁ ja ̱rase ̍ naye ̱mam || O Agni giver oflife glorious infront and above, doyou, accepting this our praise and drinking the nectarofimmortalityfromthecow,leadthisyouthtooldageasafathertheson.
Darbha grass is spread to the North of the fire and the M ānavaka stands upon it with the words;
ā̱g a ̱mantra sama ̍ganmahi ̱ pra su ̍ mṛṯ yum yu ̍yotana | ari ̍ṣṭā̱ḥ sañca ̍remahi sva ̱sti ca ̍ratād ̱iha sva ̱styā gṛẖ ebhyaḥ || Letusalljointhecomingyouthandmayweallbeliberatedfromthecycleofrepeateddeath.Maywe allgetonwelltogether,withoutincident;mayhappinessprevailhere!Mayhappinessbetousalltill wereturntoGodhead.
The ācārya's hands are then filled with water by another person.
The ācārya pours the water into the hands of the Mānavaka:—
sa ̱mu ̱drād ū̱ rmir madhu ̍mā̱guṁ udā̍rād upā̱guṁ śunā̱ sam a ̍mṛta ̱tvam a ̍śyām | ̱ime nu te ra ̱śmaya ̱s sūrya ̍sya ̱ yebhi ̍s sapi ̱tvaṁ pi ̱taro ̍ na ̱ āya ̍n || Alovely radiant wave ontheocean ofconsciousnessis coming upon us and itwillsurely give us immortality.Theseverilyareyourrays,OSurya—embodimentofcosmicwisdom,whichledour ancestorstoenlightenment. The Ācārya sprinkles water on the M ānavaka three times. Mānavaka three times. He takes his hand after reciting the following stanzas;

This is an offering to Intelligence.

Ācārya Sambhāvana
The Mānavaka offers the ācārya some dak ṣina with the following resolve;
aśeṣa he pariṣat bhavat pāda mūle mayā samarpitam imāṁ sauvarṇīṁ yat kiñcit dak ṣiṇām api yathokta dak ṣiṇām iva svikr ̥ tya || Oassemblyoflearnedbrahmins,maythisgratuitywhichisofferedatyourfeet,whateveritmaybe,be acceptabletoyou.
bho brahmaṇā ________ nak ṣatre ________ rāśau jāta ________ nāma aham, kumārasya [mama ] janma prabhṛti etat k ṣaṇa payantam apāṅkteya bhojana ucchiṣṭa bhojana aspṛśya sparśa tat tat k ālaśca abhavādibhiḥ saṁbhāvitānāṁ sarveṣāṁ pāpānāṁ apanodana dvāra gāyatr ī sv ī karaṇe mama gāyatryā upadeṣṭratve ca yogyata siddhim anugrahāṇa || ̍

The ācārya takes a kurca and sits upon it;
su-kūrcaḥ rā̱ṣṭrabhṛd a ̍si ācāryā sa ̱ndī mā tvad yo ̍ṣam || Youarethegiverofregaldominion,apreceptor'sseat,mayIneverfailthisoffice.
The Mānavaka touches his ears and then bows down and touches the teacher's feet while saying:—
Abhivādaye vaiś vamitra, aghamar ṣaṇa kauṣika traya rṣayaḥ pravarānvitasya kauś ika gotrasya āpastamba sūtra, yajuś śākha adhyāyi ś ambho ś iva nāma śarma aham asmi bho ! I salute your lotus feet. I belong to the clan of ............... scion of the Rishis ................., I follow the ................... [Apastamba] sûtra in performing the Vedic rites, I am a student of the ............. [Yajur] Veda and my name is .................. !

The ācārya and Mānavaka are covered with a new cloth. The mānavaka makes the brahm āñjali on his right thigh and the father transmits the gāyatrî mantra in the following sequence:—.

The Manavaka take the staff and says;

yad brā̎hma ̱ṇānā̱ṁ brahma ̍ṇi vra ̱tam | yad a ̱gne sendra ̍sya ̱ sapra j̍ āpatikasya ̱ sa-de ̍vasya ̱ sa-de ̍va-rā jasya ̱ sa-ma ̍nuṣasya ̱ sa-ma ̍nuṣya rā jasya ̱ sa-pi ̍tṛ rā jasya ̱ sa-pitṛkasya ̱ sa-ga ̍ndharvāpsara ̱skasya ̍ | yan ma ̍ ā̱tmana ̍ ā̱tmani ̍ vra ̱taṁ tenā̱haguṁ sarva ̍ vrato bhūyāsam || WhateverspiritualvowisoftheBrahmanas,ofAgniwithIndra,withPrajapati,withthedevasandthe Lord of the devas, with men and the lords of men, with Pitris and the lords of Pitris, with the Gandharvas and the Apsarases, whatever vow is cherished by the self towards the Self, may I be empoweredwithallthesevows.
The Ācārya causes the M ānavaka to rise while reciting the following prayer;
udāyu ̍ṣa svā̱yuṣā̎ udoṣa ̍dhīnāṁ rase ̍na ut-pa ̱rjanya ̍sya ̱ śuṣme ̱ṇa uda ̍sthāṁ a ̱mṛtā̱guṁ anu ̍ || Iriseupaftertheimmortalgods,bearinglonglifeandvitality,bearingtheessenceofhealth,bearing thevigourofParjanya.
The Mānavaka looks at the sun through the srivatsa-mudra and repeats the following:
tac-cakṣu ̍r de ̱va-hi ̍taṁ pu ̱rastā̎c-chu ̱kram-u ̱ccarat | paśye ̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍śśataṁ, jīve ̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, nandā̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, modā̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍śśataṁ, bhavā̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, śṛṇuyā̍ma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, prabra ̍vāma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, ajīt̍ ās-syāma ś a ̱rada ̍ś-śataṁ, jyok cā̱ sūrya ̍ṁ dṛś̱ e || May we continue to see for an hundred autumns, may we live together, may we rejoice together, may we enjoy together, may we radiate with glory together, may we listen to beneficial advice, may we communicate well, may we never be defeated for an hundred autumns, thus for a long time may we continue to pursue the path to enlightenment.
The Ācārya takes the Mānavaka by the hand and says;
yasmi ̍n bh ū̱ taṁ ca ̱ bhavya ̍ṁ ca ̱ sarve ̍ lo ̱kās sa ̱māhi ̍tāḥ | tena ̍ gṛhṇāmi tvāṁ a ̱haṁ mahya ̍ṁ gṛhṇāmi tvām a ̱haṁ pra ̱ jāpa ̍tinā tvā̱ mahya ̍ṁ gṛhṇāmi ________ śarman! || Inwhomthepastandthefutureandalltheworldsarecomprehended,byHimItakeyou;formeI takeyou;byPrajapatiItakeyouformeO................Sharman.

The Mānavaka now performs samidha-dānam.

The māṇavakaḥ cleans the area around the fire.
pari ̍ tvā'gne ̱ pari ̍ mṛ jā̱myāyu ̍ṣā ca ̱ dhanena ca | su ̱pra ̱ jāḥ pra ̱ jayā̍ bhūyāsaguṁ su ̱vīro ̍ vī̱rais su ̱varcā̱ varca ̍sā su ̱poṣ a ̱ḥ poṣai ̍ḥ sugṛẖ o ̍ gṛẖ aiḥ su ̱pati ̱ḥ patyā̍ sume ̱dhā me ̱dhayā̍ subrahmā̎ brahmacā̱ribhi ̍ḥ ||
All around you O Agni I clean the place, praying for life and wealth. May I be endowed with good progeny, endowed with good and virile sons, well endowed with energy, endowed with good articles for nourishment, endowed with fine houses, led by a good Spiritual Master, endowed with fine (Spiritual)intelligence,endowedwithSpiritualwealthandassociationwithspiritualdevotees.
He then places a stick on the fire with each of the following prayers.

The Māṇavaka takes a begging bowl and goes to his mother and other ladies and begs rice and money from them.
