Competence to develop:
The student recognizes the transmission characterizes in electromagnetic waves (transmitted power, losses and attenuation) and its importance at the time of modeling a communication system, under set parameters, aimed to guarantee efficient, avoiding over cost. Topics to develop: - Electromagnetic waves in perfect dielectrics. - Waves on good conductors. - Waves on good insulators. - Propagation on open mediums. Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop
Step 2 – recognize the electrodynamic and waves applications
The group will have to follow the next steps to accomplish the activity goals. Step 1: Make an academic research about the topics defined for this unit. Step 2: Answer the given questions using academic resources. Step 3: Each member of the group has to select and solve one problem; if all members don’t select the problem, the group has to ensure that all problems are solved and delivered in the forum. Step 4: Solve the practical exercises in group, taking into account that it is necessary to explain each value and step. Step 5: Compile the group contributions from the collaborative forum and ensure the accomplish of the rubric items. Step 6: Deliver the work in the monitoring and evaluation environment. Activities to develop Each student in the group has to answer the following questions using academic references to support the research:
1. Explain the practical application of the loss tangent with an example. 2. What kind of information give us the propagation velocity in electromagnetic waves propagation? 3. Explain how an electromagnetic wave behaves in free space, perfect dielectrics and good conductors. 4. Using the electromagnetic spectrum, explain the practical application of every type of radiation.
5. What is the refraction index and what kind of information give us about the electromagnetic waves behavior? 6. What is a plane wave and a non-plane wave and where are they used? What is a magnetic and a nonmagnetic medium and where are they used? Why do we use plane waves to explain practical models associated to electromagnetic phenomenon? Choose one of the following problems, solve it and share the solution in the forum. Perform a critical analysis on the group members’ contributions and reply this in the forum.
1. A dissipative medium has the following parameters: = 6, = 1.25 and = 1.5 / Fin the wavelength and the amount of wavelengths that will penetrate a 9.6MHz signal. 2. In a medium with the following characteristics, = 4, = 1.6 and = 2.310− / find these parameters for a 90MHz signal: a. Loss tangent. b. Propagation constant. c. Phase velocity. d. Wavelength. e. Index of refraction. Explain the meaning of each found value. 3. An open medium has the following electromagnetic characteristics = 9, = 1.6 and = 1.210− / Find the power transmitted by a 300MHz signal with a maximum electric field of 200V/m and find the skin depth of the signal.
4. For a medium with the same electromagnetic characteristics than the third problem, find the losses per length unit for a 500MHz signal. If the original signal has an electric field of 120Vrms/m. Find the losses in watts when the signal travels 10m in the medium. 5. For a 2.5GHz signal, traveling in seawater find the attenuation per length unit. How long does the signal have to travel, in order to have an attenuation greater than 3dB?
In group solve the following practical exercise
In an excel document make the following actions: 1. In a sheet put the following table, assigning an average frequency for every type of radiation. Acronym
Meaning
ELF SLF ULF VLF LF MF HF VHF UHF SHF EHF
Extra Low Frequency Super Low Frequency Ultra Low Frequency Very Low Frequency Low Frequency Medium Frequency High Frequency Very High Frequency Ultra High Frequency Super High Frequency Extra High Frequency
Selected frequency
In another sheet define 9 different mediums with their electromagnetic characteristics and let the user to select the medium and automatically graph the lost tangent for the selected medium. Collaborative learning environment: In this
environment, there is a forum where the student is going to share information with his/her fellow classmates in order to understand the conceptual bases in Electrodynamic and waves and to solve the proposed problems.
Environment for the Monitoring and evaluation environment: In this development
environment, the student will have to deliver the collaborative activity, according to the course agenda. Practical learning environment: In this
environment, the student will find information to develop the proposed practical activities. Individual:
The student will have to answer the conceptual questions using academic sources, to solve a chosen problem and to make a review in the forum about the delivered problems. Collaborative:
Products to deliver by student
The collaborative group will have to choose the best analyses about the given concepts and to consolidate each part of the proposed activity, including the practical exercises, where everyone has to participate. The deliver document should contain the following: - Cover page (It contains the title, authors’ name, course, university and date) - Introduction (The group will explain the practical application associate to the unit topics) - Developed activity (according to the activity guidelines) - Conclusions - References
General guidelines for the collaborative work
Planning of activities for the development of collaborative work Roles to perform by the student in the collaborative group
Each contribution has to be posted in the forum associated to this step, one important responsibility is to analyze and to discuss about his/her fellow’s
contributions. Before the three last days of the activity, the final document has to be consolidated according to the proposed activity and each student has to analyze it according to the rubric, looking for deliver an excellent activity. Choose the role to perform within the group. Taking into account, that no matter the role that the student chooses, it’s very important to evidence significant contributions.
In this activity, each student in the group will have to choose a role, but it is important to recognize each of the following, that will be assumed from the following step on. Roles Compiler
Roles and responsibilit y for the delivery of products by students

Alert
Use of references Plagiarism policy
Function
Consolidate the document, as the final product from the discussion, taking into account that it will include the contributions from all participants and that it will only include the members whom participate in the progress of the work. To inform the one who is in charge of the alerts in order to inform to the students whom did not make the contributions that they are not going to be include in the product that will be delivered. Ensure that the document accomplish the presentation required rules. Ensure that the document contains the established criteria in the rubric. To alert the one who is playing the reviewer role, to inform the others members when it is necessary to make some change. Alert about the time on the delivered products and to send the document in the defined time, using the resources for the delivery and to inform the other students when the deliver will be made. Inform the group members about the work news and to inform to the teacher using the forum course and the internal delivered message service about the final document deliver.
Always cite the references using APA style. Students must be aware of severe sanctions in the case of plagiarism.
In the agreement 029 of December 13, 2013, article 99, are considered as faults that violate the academic order, among others, the following: literal e) "Plagiarism, that means, to present as his own authorship all or Part of a work, work, document or invention made by another person. It also implies the use of wrong citations or references, or propose citations where there is no coincidence between it and the reference "and liberal f)" Reproducing, or copying for profit, educational materials or results of research products, which have Intellectual rights reserved for the University. The academic sanctions that the student will face are the following: A) In cases of academic fraud demonstrated in academic work or respective evaluation, the grade that will be imposed will be zero point zero (0.0) without prejudice to the corresponding disciplinary sanction. B) In cases related to plagiarism demonstrated in academic work of any nature, the grade that will be imposed will be zero point zero (0.0), without prejudice to the corresponding disciplinary sanction 4.
